Satellite U400-15B screen isn't bright as it used to be

Good morning everyone
I have had my U400-15B nearly a year now and I've noticed the screen isn't as bright as it used to be.
The brightness level is on maximum but it just seem a little dull.
Has anyone else noticed this or is it just the LCD panel not being very good?

Hi
> The brightness level is on maximum but it just seems a little dull.
So you are saying that you have already checked the FN + F7 key combination which increases the display brightness?
Well, maybe there is an FL inverter issue?
The FL inverter is a small part which controls the display brightness.
If this part starts to malfunction then you will see everything on the display like behind a thick fog.
If this is a case then you should get in contact with an local service technician whu could replace this.
PS; if you are running Win 7 then you should go to the Win 7 power management and should check if the Win 7 didnt set the display brightness to the lower level in order to save the battery power. The Win 7 supports an economy mode which tries to save the power

  • Slow boot on Vista Home Premium - Satellite U400-15b

    Hi,
I have just bought Satellite U400-15b and am finding it takes a very long time for Vista to boot up, I have gone into msconfig and disabled the things that I am not using and stuff I think that is not necessary, but still having to wait ages before I can use the laptop. I have enough RAM and processor speed so I dont think the specs of the laptop are a problem
Is there anything that can be done about this slow boot, any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hello
In my opinion slow boot-up or slow notebook operations depends on right OS configuration. I played with this last months and I am now satisfied how Vista boots and runs on my notebook.
I wrote about it in one another thread and if you have some time have a look under http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=134947
Please let me know what do you think about all this.

  • Satellite U400-15B hangs on Internet and Touch media keys issue

    Hi All,
Had two issues with my U400-15B which I am hoping to resolve.
    1) The first issue is that I have noticed that my internet occasionally seems to hang on Internet Explorer when using website's which have a couple of images e.t.c.
It will freeze but the rest of the laptop works fine - I mean you can go into the start menu and open other programs fine. However, if you open Microsoft Word while this is happening, it will take slightly longer to load up than normal. Does anyone know what this could be or how I can resolve this?
I am using Vista Home Premium 32 bit and the laptop has 4GB of RAM / P7350 Intel Centrino 2 - so is pretty powerful.
    2) The second issue is that when I press the 'sound' touch key, the white lights and the white bar above the touchpad become unlit. When I press this again the lights come back on but it doesn't mute the sound. Only when the the laptop is put to sleep mode and then woken up again, does the key work correctly. All others work fine. Does anyone know whats causing this?
I have exchanged this laptop 3 times now and all of them have done issue (2) this but surely this isn't normal.
Any help or advice to rectify these issues is very much appreciated.
    Thanks

    > but the problem of when you press the sound mute touch key still turns the white lights off and the white bar on top of the mouse off - instead of muting the sound.
Ive got U400 too and installed Win XP. When I press the first button near the power button then I can enable and disable the LEDs.
To be honest this is not a problem!
You can configure the Toshiba Control buttons.
This can be done in the Toshiba Button Support Utility. And this tool can be found in Toshiba Assist -> Optimize -> Toshiba Button Support
There you can chose the button (button name) and can assign the certain function.
I think the mute.exe could be fund in Toshiba folder.

  • C Drive Full on my Satellite U400 -15B

    Hi All
I am not very clever when it comes to PC's so need a little help, I keep getting a message to warn me that my C drive is reaching capacity, even when I have not uploaded anything for a long while.
I have explored the drive and each folder therein and there is nothing evident to say why I have used 147GB of my 149GB capacity,
Its a 320GB laptop with 2 drives and the E drive is ok?
I have done the usual, deleted temp files, emptied recycle bin etc to no avail
Its a Toshiba U400-15B Satellite if that's any help
Any ideas and help anyone, it would be most appreciated

    Hi
I can also recommend the CCleaner. Its freeware tool which helps you to remove the temporal stored files and helps you to clean and repair the registry very useful tool definitely..

  • Satellite P300-P19: screen is too bright

    Hi all
I have a P300-P19, the screen is so bright, its set at LEVEL 17.
I have to use FN + F6 to drop it to LEVEL 1 constantly.
Does anyone know how to set it so it stays at the LEVEL you want ?
And is there any other options for contract etc etc
Its even to bright at LEVEL 1 but i do hate bright lights... :-)
    Thanks in advance..
    Rob

LOL :D if you hate true bright screens so why you buy devices which support such True Bright screen technology?
I love such screens I like it in the LCD TV, external PC LCD and in notebooks...
However, if you want to use constantly low screen brightness then I recommend changing the screen brightness option in the Vista Power settings.
    Check the forums HowTo area.
There you can find nice document called How to handle the power managment features of Windows Vista?

  • Satellite A660-18N - Screen it too bright so how to update the BIOS?

Hi guys, I need your help with this laptop because it is giving me a lot of problems.
I have changed the screen of this Satellite A660-18N because the one that was fitted in was damaged. I have installed it and is working fine but I'm having problems with the brightness. When I click - on the brightness it goes up and when I click + it goes down. It's way too bright and want to do something to fix it.
Does the bios help to fix this problem and how do I flash the BIOS on these laptops? I did flash BIOS on desktop pc but on this I can't see any way of doing it. Is there any way of fixing the screen without changing the BIOS? Some people said that I have to flash the BIOS because new screens wont work 100% with old BIOS.
    Please help
    Thank you

Thank you very much Xardas for your reply.
It is 3rd party screen. I bought it from ebay. They said that it's original. It says made from Samsung. The original one was also made from samsung. The guys from Toshiba said that you might have to update bios so that it will accept other screens. I told them which one I bought and they did confirm that it should work fine.
I wanted to flash the bios with the latest bios and maybe it could work fine. I just don't know how to do it? I did create a bootable usb and placed the bios in it but don't know the command to flash it. I did go in bios but did not find anything that would be helpful to flash.
I also was thinking to use some kind of software that makes it little bit darker. It's way too bright. My eyes hurt to use it. I always have to use sunglasses.
If you know anything it really would be helpful.
    Thank you

  • Satellite A300D-15B - Screen turns between on and off

Hi, I've been having some problems with my laptop's screen; it's an on-off thing, however during these past few days it has become worse.
Whenever I tilt my laptop screen past a certain point, it turns black. However if you shine a bright lamp at the screen, you can still see and tell that the screen is still on, just very very very dark. However if you tilt the screen forward again, it comes back on / light backs up.
Sometimes, it's more troublesome and it requires me to repeatedly and simultaneously tilt the screen forwards and backwards before the screen comes back on.
As mentioned, it's worse now as the tilt angle of the screen has to be low for it to stay on (as opposed to before where the angle of the screen for it to stay lit was okay as it didn't require me to kind of bend over), tilt it any further back and it turns black again. Any ideas for a self fix? I called up Comet (the store where I bought this laptop from) regarding a repair and was quoted a waiting time of 21 days maximum; I would gladly send it in as it saves the self hassle but I need my laptop for these next 2 months for work and studying.
    Thanks

    Hi buddy,
I agree with the user above. Theoretically the internal LCD cable could be the reason only for this issue. If it works only on a certain point, it seems to be a loose connection of this cable.
You should ask an authorized service provider. The guys can order a new cable and exchange it.
I believe such a cable isnt so expensive
By the way: Here you can search for nearest authorized service provider:

  • Satellite U400 - Recovery disk is maybe corrupted

    Hi all,
I have my Satellite U400, I created the recovery DVD and I used two or three times to restore my system. But now I tried but always failed during the installation, I think some of the restore files are corrupted and can't be coppied to the computer.
So, now am stuck without my orginal operating system.
Any one can advise what shall I do?
    BR

It is really stupid situation now.
Do you use this recovery DVD for the first time?
I mean you have done this recovery media following Toshiba reminder and advice to create one.
If your recovery DVD is useless not I see two options for you:
    - Contact nearest Toshiba authorized service provider and explain the situation. Maybe you will get new and original Toshiba recovery DVD for free. At the end it is not your fault when recovery cannot be read properly.
    - Buy new recovery media. You can order it under https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx

  • Wireless connection is not working on my Satellite U400/03S

    Hi Guys,
I have Toshiba Satellite U400/03S laptop and I have a very strange problem that I can't seem to get around.
I signed up new ADSL2+ connection and yesterday when was I trying to setup it up I found the I can connect to internet through wired but not wireless.
The laptop shows the network in the list with full signal strength. I have configured the connection properties identical to my laptops including the WEP key and such. When I go to connect to the network, it just sits and says "Waiting for network" for approximately 5 mins, then that dialog dissapears and never connects to the network, just goes back to the network selection screen.
Has anyone had this problem? If so how did you go about fixing it? This is very frustrating and have been playing with router options and computer options for hours now trying to get it to work properly with no luck.
Just to let you know guys that I am using Billion BiPAC 5200G RC wireless router and windows XP pro on my laptop.
Help please! Thanks in advance to all that reply.

    Hi buddy,
I agree with Macius. You should contact your internet provider because I think its a problem with your Internet connection or router that you get from them. So you can check with the guys step by step if everything is configured properly.
For creating a WLAN connection you have to configure the settings in router like encryption, MAC address filter, etc.
For testing I would disable all these security features.
Last but not least you should check the TCP/IP configuration of your WLAN card. Maybe you need a static IP address or DHCP Depending on your router ;)

  • Satellite U400 - the webcam does not work anymore

Hello guys here is my sudden probloema!
About a year ago I purchased a laptop
    TOSHIBA - Satellite U400
with s.o. WinVista 32bit and with integrated webcam chicony etc. ....
For a year, everything worked correctly, but for some days now, the webcam does not work anymore.
As soon as I try to open it, a message of management software cam that says "Webcam driver open fail, please restart or computer room"
I tried to do it all: aggioronato and downloaded the drivers from toshiba, uninstalled the program and re installed the webcam ....! updated bios notebook ....! useless!
the strange thing .. well that going into device manager ... the webcam is not there ....! but if the launch seems to open just then check quell caz ... Warning!!
    Gan you help me?
    Graziee

Are you familiar and comfortable with LINUX LIVE bootable discs to load an alternative operating system with unobtrusive but extensive Toshiba device support so you can determine if your webcam hardware is ruined or if the problem is software and possibly solved reinstalling Windows ?
At this point, you're pondering less time consuming but more expensive choices such as buying another web cam, or another computer and you might be temporarily borrowing someone else's web cam / using a non preferred spare web cam that isn't optimal for your needs.
Continuously downloading software, registry cleaners, and repeatedly reinstalling drivers will eventually ruin your Windows installation and consume more time than you've wasted so far and still doesn't guarantee to fix your malfunction.

  • Satellite U400 (PSU44E) randomely rebooting

    Hi Everybody,
I have a strange problem on my Satellite U400.
For a couple of days it was starting sending blue screens and rebooting.
I used the Vista memory check tool and identified one faulty RAM.
I changed both with OCZ 2*2Go PC6400, and no more problems according to the vista memory check tool.
But now, sometimes it works fine, sometimes I have blue screens and even sometimes it is rebooting wothout bluescreen just like that...pshh...
The other thing I noticed is that I have some times some strange lines appearing randomely on the screen like a bad contact....
I have updated the drivers of the motherboard, the diplay, and the BIOS...
    I have no more clues....
    Has someone an idea?
    Thanks,
    Furby

    Hi
First of all the links to the images dont work.
Secondly it would be interesting to know if your warranty is valid.
If yes, then you should contact the ASP in your country before you would replace any RAM and other hardware parts. Usually the warranty should cover such replacements.
Ive got a U400 too and my notebook is running fine. I upgraded the RAM too but I used the DDR2 667MHz (PC2-5300) 200-PIN SODIMM modules.
I dont know why you used the PC6400 (800Mhz) but maybe this issue is really related to the RAM issue.
Possibly the higher temperature could affect the functionality of the modules which would lead to the BSOD.
Did you notice an higher temperature inside the notebook?
    How about fan cleaning?
You could remove the dust from cooling grilles using the compressed air spray
I think its worth a try

  • Satellite U400 will not usually boot up

    Hi all,
    I have a Toshiba Satellite U400-217 (PSU44E) running Windows 8.
Worked fine until a week ago. Now, when I switch it on, the indicator lights light up, there is a brief hard drive spin (1 second) - and then nothing. The lights above the keyboard stay lit, but the screen stays black.
I read a reset remedy where you take the battery and power cable out and hold the power button for 30 seconds, then plug the power cable back in, boot up, shut down, reinsert battery and boot up again.
However, the machine will still not boot up after the 30-second button hold. I still just get the lights and nothing else.
However, the machine will generally boot up fine on one attempt out of every 30 or so.
It's annoying - any ideas or suggestions very gratefully received.
    Many thanks,
    KaiBosh

    > However, the machine will generally boot up fine on one attempt out of every 30 or so.
In my opinion you should firstly check the HDD
A friend of mine installed Win 8 on new notebook from another manufacturer
After some time the notebook could not boot up I thought its something wrong with motherboard but finally it was just an HDD malfunction
To be honest I dont know if its only HDD issue but in my opinion the HDD is one of the first parts which should be checked
Ok, in worst case it could be possible that mobo malfunctions.

  • Satellite U400 wont turn on & when on wont come back from sleep mode

I have a Satellite U400 and its a year and a few months old.
In the last little bit it has been acting up, and it started with when the computer goes to sleep and goes to the black blank screen it will not come back from that.
The only way to do anything is hold in the power key till it turns off and then turning it back on. This brings me to the warning screen I have turned my computer off incorrectly. It has been doings this for a few weeks and started randomly out of the blue.
Then just today it wouldnt turn on at all, I was pressing the power key and the key itself would light up, and on the bottom right hand side the little lights would light up but wouldnt turn on, I kept pressing it over and over and over again and finally it did turn on. Once on I only used it for a few mins before turning off again and then would do the same thing, I kept pressing the bottom till it turned on. Its been on now and hasnt turned off again.
Not to log ago I had to reformat my computer due to me forgeting my password and had locked myself out of the computer. About a week after that is when the issues started. I am not all that computer smart, to be honest, I do understand something things, I can follow step by step to do something.
I really dont want to pay to have it fix I want to just do it myself and soon as its in great shape and never had any issues before.
Does anyone have any idea what this could be, or why it could be?
I am thinking about reformatting again as I am worried that didnt work out right the 1st time or something.
Or if this is something that needs to be repaired does anyone have a clue on the cost of it?
    Thanks ^_^

    hi aev270,
sounds like a serious problem to me.
try the following: take out battery, cd-rom, hdd and try again.
if it starts up without this components - you got lucky!
this means it probably a software issue (but i dont think so - sorry)
do you see the toshiba logo / bios messages? no - the you are in trouble.
this strange behaviour could depend on many things: defektive components like ram or grafics... or (badest thing) the mainboard...
if you have still warranty on it you should go to a servicepartner having the system checked.

  • Satellite U400-135 overheats

    Hi,
Few weeks back I bought new Toshiba Satellite U400-138 and now I feel it is an inferior design due to many complains I found either here in the support forum or from the people who tried to deal with this series .
Fist of all the overheat issue becomes not affordable as I all about to loose my fingers due to extreme heat comes from the touch pad bottom level !! moreover it usually takes more than 7 minutes to get the windows logon screen while starting up the windows and when you access the windows it keeps showing CPU usage almost 100% for long time just by clicking the internet explorer so i can not do any thing except waiting (it is killing slow) and when i compare it with my old P4 desktop i feel how much i was wrong when i decided to go for the U-400 !
Today I am decided to take the laptop back to local Toshiba dealer and when I was there I tried to touch the lower part of the similar model availbel in the show room and it was extremely hot and when I asked the sales man there he informed me that there are many customers reported the same complain then I have been referred to their service center for inspection and I am so boring now because my new laptop will be serviced after just two weeks only and , I think this model is an inferior design and the only way to get rid of this problem to get the same replaced by something else?!!!!!
your valuable feedback is highly apprciated.

    Hi Will
Ive got a U400 too. Its a U400 which belongs to the PSU40E series.
I use both OS; Vista and XP.
At the beginning the Vista started slowly it was not too slow but slower as the Win XP.
    I investigated a little bit and found a solution;
Firstly I found out that many background processes and applications have been loaded at the beginning of the booting procedure In MSCONFIG you can find these applications.
I have disabled some not necessary (for me) programs and the notebook booted much faster.
Furthermore I have noticed that Tempro tool update helped a lot.
So please check these both proposals.
I'm sure it would help you...
    Regarding the higher touchpad temperature;
Well, my touchpad is also warmer as the rest of the notebook cover but this is nothing unusual because the cooling modules are placed below this touchpad and the left hand side is always warmer due to the heat dissipation on this notebook side
So you shouldnt be worried; this is nothing unusual
Bye & have a nice day
