Satellite U400 - Display flickers when idle

As mentioned, I've this problem of flickering whenever I don't run the screensaver! My machine is still under warranty and this problem has been persisting 3 months from now. Please tell me if any configuration or any measures to be taken...
Thanks in advance and regards,
Sanjeev Gopinath V

Hi
Can you please test an external monitor on your notebook? So you can determine if the problem persists only on the internal monitor or external monitor too.
But before you go to an ASP you should make sure that you are using the newest display driver from the Toshiba website. Check this:
http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com => Support & Downloads => Download Drivers
If you have the flickering on the internal monitor I think you will need professional help from an authorized service provider. The technicians can check your notebook and if your notebook is under warranty the repair should be for free.

  • New 27" Thunderbolt Display Flickers when attached to new 27" iMac

I'm using a new 27" iMac. I require a dual-monitor configuration so yesterday I purchased a new 27" Thunderbolt display and plugged its built-in Thunderbolt cable into the Thunderbolt port of the iMac. I now have a huge desktop space that spans two monitors. With that in mind…
At least once every few minutes the new Thunderbolt display blacks out (i.e. flickers) for approximately one second. The symptom is very similar to what a Windows-attached display does when the screen resolution is changed. A quick Google search indicates others are experiencing the same problem although most complainants are using a MacBook or Mini, not an iMac.
Apple posted a firmware update for the Thunderbolt display a few days ago. I installed it successfully but the problem remains. Any advice?

    UPDATE:
I received a call back from a senior tech at Apple. The salient points are as follows:
    (1) Apple engineers are well aware of the problem.
    (2) They plan to release a firmware update for the display at some indeterminate time.
    (3) The fix for this problem will not be bundled into the forthcoming 10.7.2 Lion update.
Given that the flickering problem renders the Thunderbolt monitor virtually unusable as a desktop extension for a 27" iMac, combined with the fact that Apple has no idea when a fix for the problem will be available, my decision to return the monitor for a full refund is a virtual certainty.
AppleCare objected to my conclusion that the Thunderbolt monitor is "incompatible" with the iMac. Perhaps they're right. I'm not super technical so it's possible that I used the wrong term. It's a semantic distinction though. The bottom line is that Thunderbolt displays flicker when attached to a brand new 27" iMac and my personal opinion is that one is better off not purchasing this device until Apple fixes this major flaw.
Apple asked me to make a video of the Thunderbolt display manifesting the problem. Here it is.

Hopefully this information will be of value to someone.

  • My Macbook Pro display flickers when using power adapter

I purchased a new power adapter for my Macbook Pro (late 2011 17 inch) from Other World Computing and now the display flickers intermittently when attached to the new power adapter. There is no flickering when not attached to the power adapter or when attached to the old power adapter.
Any ideas on fixing the new power adapter? I would rather fix the problem if it is simple.
    Thanks for the help.
    Roy Patience

It doesn't affect the battery. You can use your MacBook Pro plugged in all the time without damaging the battery. You only have to be sure that you unplug it and run a battery cycle (drain the battery without letting the Mac turn off and charge it fully) at least once a month to keep the battery life.

  • 27'' LED Cinema Display flickers when powering MBP and dimmed down

The 27'' LED Cinema Display flickers (backlight flickers) in the following situation:
    * The display powers an MacBook Pro (e.g. later 2010).
    * The MacBook Pro is fully charged (i.e. power is not used for charging).
    * The MacBook Pro performs some GPU intense task (moving the mouse over the dock with magnification enabled).
    * The brightness of the display is dimmed down to one of the lower settings (one or two "bars").
The problem disappears if the MBP is powered by an independent charger.
We reproduced the problem with two different MBPs (13'' and 15'') and two different displays.

Same problem here! I bought two brand new 27 inch Cinema Displays, one for work and one for my home office. Both showed the problem. I returned both, go replacement displays and both show the same problem. I am using them with a 13 inch MacBook Air late 2010. I use them with the MacBook's display lid closed and powered by the Cinema Display. The problem only occurs when the display brightness is at 1 to 5 bars. From 6 bars on everything is fine. I also noticed that the flickering is stronger when I USE the computer, i.e. dragging around windows, typing, etc. When I just look at the screen, the flickering occurs more sporadically. The flickering looks like a short switching off of the display light (a few milliseconds).
I just tried the hint suggested in this thread and indeed, when I open the lid and have the MacBook running on batteries (not powered by the Cinema Display), the flickering is gone! So it really seems to be dependent on that.
Please fix it, Apple! This is not acceptable for a premium-quality display! We have already done a good job narrowing down the conditions under which the problem occurs. You should easily be able to reproduce the issue like this:
    - use a MacBook (e.g. new MacBook Air) and turn it on
    - plug in all three cables provided by the 27" Cinema Display (power, DisplayPort, USB)
    - close the lid of the MacBook and re-awake it with an external keyboard so the Cinema Display will be the only display in use
    - wait a few hours for the Cinema Display to become warm (not sure if this is a necessary condition but it could be)
    - then, use the computer under low-light conditions and ensure the brightness is at 5 bars or less
--> You will see the problem.
By the way, the recent Cinema Display firmware update (to address the audio issue) did NOT solve this problem.

  • 27" Cinema display flickers when woken from sleep

I've noticed that my 27" Apple Cinema display flickers briefly when woken from sleep.
I have had the display for 8 months, and haven't noticed this before.
It flickers (or flashes), just once when the display wakes when the computer is woken from sleep. It only affects the bottom third of the display.
Once it has properly woken, and flickered once, it then works o.k.
    Has anyone else had this?
    Thanks.
    Bob.

Yeah - I'm trying to verify that 100% right now. I know that I won't get full functionality from the TB dispaly (no TB, FW or ethernet on the back of the monitor) but if I can get video and USB between the Mac and the displays, that would be enough. I haven't seen any docuemtnation anywhere deatailing wether or not that TB displays will work with existing video cards / Mac Pro's, or if I'll have to do a full round of upgrades including my Mac Pro and the ATI 5770. And as you know, there are no TB video cards on the market at this time. My timing basically *****...
My plan was to return the Cinema Displays while I still can, fall back to a spare Dell 21" that I have lying around the house for a few weeks (yukkkk..), and then figure out what to do with the TB diplsay as they get closer to release. I'm contempling upgrading my Mac Pro, but if I can stick with what I have, it would save me some cash.I woudln't even mind upgrading my video card, but I just dropped $2000 on these 2 Cinema Display's last week, and I feel like they are already outdated.
PS - I am constantly selling gear, so resale value and having the "latest and greatest" are pretty important to me, hence the interest in the TB displays.

  • TS3274 my display flickers when i send an email or message on my ipad

My iPad started flickering when I send emails or messages. Has anyone had this issue and resolved it?

  • External Cinema Display flickers when attached to MacBook

This usually shows up with an iPhoto image on the desktop. Pixels in dark areas turn green and dance around. The pattern resembles dithering artifacts, and the affected pixels move when a browser window is moved around the screen.
The flicker often devolves into flashing pink pixels and pink lines, eventually making the display unusable. Powering off/on or changing resolution has no effect, nor does "detect displays" from the Display preferences.

Took it to the local Apple Store (remember to make a reservation next time!). After about 30 minutes, the display started its flicker (hooked up to a different machine, while the MacBook was hooked up to a different display).
So it was the display that was faulty. The Apple Store promptly replaced it with a new one.

  • 27 Cinema Display flickers on cursor change

    Hello,
I've recently purchased a 27" Cinema Display and hooked it up to my mid 2010 13" MBP. Everything works fine except for one really annoying thing: The Cinema Display flickers when the mouse cursor changes. I've done a thorough search through the community threads and haven't found anybody who's experiencing the same problem. Could anyone please tell me if they've run into this issue, and if so if there's any way of fixing it.
    Thanks!

Might be related to the thread below.
To give you a quick summary, try either of the following:
    - use your macbook's charger rather than the cinema display magsafe connector
    - increase the brightness to 7 bars or more
    - simply unplug the magsafe used by the cinema display

  • Satellite U400-11U - no sound when using headphone

    Hi everybody .
i has get a Toshiba Satellite U400 (u400-11u) with Vista installed and at the first use all work nice and i have never tried the headphone, but after sometimes, when I put on the connecteur on the jack of headphone there is no sound, only when I put off the connecteur out of jack, the speaker work.
I has learn that I must update my BIOS and I doing it : no solution, there is no sound, so I have change to XP SP3 the some problem and now I'm with Windows 7 with the some problem.
So if you have any information about this problem, please give'it to me !!
I have tried all solution in FAQ, but no way !!
PS : sorry for language mistakes !!

Unfortunately I cannot offer you 100% working solution because I don't have exact the same notebook model but what I can say is that I think BIOS has nothing to with this issue.
It is very interesting that you have tested it with different operating systems and different headphones but the situation is always the same. What can be the problem?
At the end I believe this port is somehow defective. I have three different laptops here on the desk and hear internet radio almost all day. When I use my headset with all three laptops the reaction is always the same. Internal speakers will be disabled and I can hear music on my headset.
Maybe you should contact nearest authorized service provider and ask for help. Let them check the port.
One more thing: when you start notebook for the first time (factory settings) everything must works properly. If you have noticed this issue from that moment I really think there is a hardware problem.

  • Satellite U400 wont turn on & when on wont come back from sleep mode

I have a Satellite U400 and its a year and a few months old.
In the last little bit it has been acting up, and it started with when the computer goes to sleep and goes to the black blank screen it will not come back from that.
The only way to do anything is hold in the power key till it turns off and then turning it back on. This brings me to the warning screen I have turned my computer off incorrectly. It has been doings this for a few weeks and started randomly out of the blue.
Then just today it wouldnt turn on at all, I was pressing the power key and the key itself would light up, and on the bottom right hand side the little lights would light up but wouldnt turn on, I kept pressing it over and over and over again and finally it did turn on. Once on I only used it for a few mins before turning off again and then would do the same thing, I kept pressing the bottom till it turned on. Its been on now and hasnt turned off again.
Not to log ago I had to reformat my computer due to me forgeting my password and had locked myself out of the computer. About a week after that is when the issues started. I am not all that computer smart, to be honest, I do understand something things, I can follow step by step to do something.
I really dont want to pay to have it fix I want to just do it myself and soon as its in great shape and never had any issues before.
Does anyone have any idea what this could be, or why it could be?
I am thinking about reformatting again as I am worried that didnt work out right the 1st time or something.
Or if this is something that needs to be repaired does anyone have a clue on the cost of it?
    Thanks ^_^

    hi aev270,
sounds like a serious problem to me.
try the following: take out battery, cd-rom, hdd and try again.
if it starts up without this components - you got lucky!
this means it probably a software issue (but i dont think so - sorry)
do you see the toshiba logo / bios messages? no - the you are in trouble.
this strange behaviour could depend on many things: defektive components like ram or grafics... or (badest thing) the mainboard...
if you have still warranty on it you should go to a servicepartner having the system checked.

  • My macbook air (version 10.9.4) display flickers, has random tabs and windows opening, and there are random ads almost everywhere. All this happens when I am using safari. What can I do?

My macbook air (version 10.9.4) display flickers, has random tabs and windows opening, and there are random ads almost everywhere. All this happens when I am using safari. What can I do?

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Satellite U400-10J - power is on but NO LCD dsiplay

    Good day.
    I have a new Toshiba Satellite U400-10J.
I did not turn it off after i use it and then when i get back it was hanged up so i decided to turn it off by pressing the power button in few seconds.
The next day when i decided to use my laptop again something occured that i don't understand.
    My problem is;
When i turned ON the power button, the laptop runs but there was no display, i checked the fan and it runs for a while then stops after a few seconds. All other button has lights and the CD drive is running too.
What wonders me is that the hard disk led is not blinking or there's no light in it and why there was no LCD display?
Please, anyone can help me on this matter. I would really appreciate if you can give me your answer now.
    Thank you very much.

To be honest I dont understand why this happened. Im owner of Satellite U400-10N and something like that never happened to me.
However, I read about some useful workarounds which could help you.
First of all remove the battery and disconnect the AC adaptor.
Then you have to wait Im not quite sure how long but I would recommend waiting for about 30-60min.
Then connect both devices and try to power up the notebook.
    Check if this helps.
    Bye and good luck

  • Portege M800 now is Satellite U400

After Motherboard Replacement everest for windows reports my M800 as a Satellite U400. Can I modify this ? or i return my laptop to the service center.
    Thanks

I think the DMI information needs updating. The service center should have done this when the mainboard was replaced, so take it back to them and ask them to update it.

  • Wireless issue with Satellite U400

    Hello guys,
my laptop is Satellite U400-10n. (OS Vista)
It was running perfectly. But now I cannot connect to a wireless network. When I search for a wireless network, sometimes nothing comes up. I'm using cisco network magic program but it didn't help. I tried everything. I disabled the Bluetooth devise. I turned off all the Bluetooth devices around (cell phones). I have a cordless phone; I turned it off as well.
I tried to update the wireless network device, but didn't help either.
Please guys I need your help.

For WLAN configuration you don't need to use additional applications and you can configure it using Windows settings.
Anyway, check all WLAN settings. Be sure the WLAN card and your router uses the same WLAN standard, try to restart your router.
Have you tried to connect your notebook to some other WLAN?
Can your notebook detect other WLANs?

  • Bluetooth on Satellite U400

    Hi
I recently bought a new Satellite U400-15e and assumed it had bluetooth installed. After switching on the communication switch I set my phone
to search for devices but it found nothing. I tried searching a few times with the same result. So I now assume that bluetooth is not installed
    on my U400
Can some one tell me how I go about getting and installing bluetooth on my laptop.
    Many thanks.....Bill
ps. Is switching on the communication swith all I need to do to activate bluetooth?

Is switching on the communication switch all I need to do to activate Bluetooth?
No. when the WLAN switch is set to ON you must enable BT using FN+F8 key combination.
After doing this for the first time BT software will be installed and T module will be configured.
When finished you must start BT software end configure it with your external device.
