Satellite U400 - restore to default settings

Q1. I want to restore my laptop to factory settings. I have a corrupted security suite and the provider cannot fix it, so now my only choice is to wipe all data and programs off the laptop and restore to factory settings. How do I do this?
Q2. The laptop was sold with Vista installed, but I want to install XP from the disks provided after I have restored to factory settings. How do I replace Vista with XP once I have restored the laptop to factory settings?
Thanks for your help.

A1
If you have HDD recovery image install operating system using HDD recovery option as described under http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD9102IR0000R01.htm
A2
I didn't understand you. Do you have Toshiba installations disc for WXP or you want to install own WXP version?
Factory settings you can have if you install operating system using original Toshiba installations disc. so if you have WXP installations disc you will have WXP factory settings (recovery image designed by Toshiba).

Pictures are designed to be copied off the device regularly as would be done with any digital camera.  There is no logical reason why anyone would fail to do this with supposedly important pictures.
If a recent backup exists, it is also possible to restore the device from the most recent backup, this may restore pictures to the device.  If it does, COPY THEM OFF THE DEVICE IMMEDIATELY for safekeeping.

  • Restoring the default settings for Audition CS6

Fortunately you don't have to uninstall and reinstall Audition to do this - although that's certainly an option. Bear in mind that doing this will only work if you choose to delete your preferences as part of the process.
There are several other options though, and I suggest reading through all of them before deciding which to use. We'll start, though, with the other simple one. If you start Audition with the 'shift' key held down, this will achieve the same result - the preference files won't be read, and the default (aka 'vanilla') ones will be reinstated. Certainly with a Mac (and probably a PC as well) you have to hold the 'shift' key down at least until the splash screen appears, otherwise it might not work.
From here on, it gets a little more complicated, but you get more options. The reason for this is that in order to get at the individual preference files, we have to consider three different operating systems, XP, Windows 7, and OS X. By default, in all of them, the location of these files is hidden, and you have to reveal it. When you have done this, the path and files will be revealed.
    Revealing hidden folders:
XP: In a folder, go to Tools>Folder Options>View and scroll down to the hidden folders entry. Select the 'Show' option. The path to the Preferences folder is C:\Documents and Settings\[user_name]\Application Data\Adobe\Audition\5.0
Windows 7: In a folder, go to Organise>Folders and Search Options>View, and then it's the same as XP. The path to the Preferences folder is c:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Audition\5.0
Mac OX: The Preferences are in a library folder, and are apparently stored twice. The locations of them are:
    /Users/[User_Name]/Library/Preferences/Adobe/Audition/5.0/
    /Users/[User_Name]/Library/Preferences/com.Adobe.Audition.5.0.plist
There is a note about this at the end of this FAQ*.
Anyway, there are, apparently, several ways to unhide them:
    1. The easiest way to get there without opening Terminal is to open Finder or click on your desktop, click Go in the menu bar, then hold down the OPTION/ALT key.  You should see Library appear in the menu as long as your holding that key and clicking the menu item will bring it up in Finder.
    2. Use Command+Shift+G from the Mac desktop (or Finder>Go>Go to Folder) and type in ~/Library to temporarily access the Library directory. When you have finished manipulating the relevant parts of it, close this window and the folder will no longer be visible.
    3. To make the Library folder visible permanently (like in OS 10.6 and earlier), open the Terminal application and use the following command: chflags nohidden ~/Library/
What do you have to do when you've revealed the folder?
The basic idea is that if Audition opens, and it doesn't find a particular file in the preferences folder, it recreates it. So, you can either delete all the files in it (the same as Shift+open), or you can be more selective. Primarily there are three .xml files that you are interested in, and if you are only having a problem with one of them, then that's the only one you need to delete.
Application Settings - deleting this will restore most of the settings in the program itself back to defaults
Effect Presets - deleting this will restore default settings, but if you have made any of your own presets, you will lose these too.
Favorites - the same as Effect Presets, only for the Favorites list.
There is also an .xml file for Machine-specific settings, but this only affects your sound device, and generally would be rewritten anyway if anything changed, so generally doesn't need to be touched. Mainly it's the three I mention above that are the ones you will be interested in.
    * A note from Durin about the Mac preferences files:
"The directory path, ~/Library/Preferences/Adobe/Audition/5.0/ is where we store all the preferences, presets, workspaces, log files, etc.  Anything and everything a user may need access to.  The .plist file is more of an application/OS level preferences - similar to an ini or registry entry in that it's less user-facing and more preferences for how the application works with the OS.  In Audition's case, this stores information such as the last directory accessed, File Open/Save dialog dimensions, and other mysterious prefs that are just random GUIDs that Audition and OS X understand.
In either case, if the directory or .plist is missing, it will be rebuilt on launch to the first-launch defaults."

The success of setting the correct cassette will depend on the applications you use. If the apps are set to use any cassette, rather than call a particular cassette, then making cassette 2 the default will succeed. But if the app calls cassette 1, then no amount of driver default settings will help. So in this case, you will have more success if you create another preset for printing to cassette 2, then you can ensure you select this preset when you want to print on plain paper. And of course you can select the envelope preset when you want to do this.
If you do want to look at modifying the printer defaults, this can be done via the CUPS web page.
To access CUPS, open Safari and type
    http://127.0.0.1:631/printers
This will open the CUPS Printer administration page and will show all the printers currently configured on the Mac. For the printer that you wish to change the defaults for, click its name in the Queue Name column.
Clicking the printer name will open the printer administration page for that printer. Here you need to click on the Administration drop menu and then select Set Default Options.
This will show a new page with four menu headings (links); Options Installed, General, Banners and Policies. Select General. Scroll down the list until you find an entry like "Paper Source" or something similar that shows the cassettes and select Cassette 2.
With the option selected you then need to scroll down the list to the bottom of the page where you will see the ‘Set Default Options’ button. Click this button and you will then be presented with an authentication window. Enter the account name and password that has been set as the admin for this Mac. And then press the Log In button. You will then see another page stating that the information change is completed.
Now you can open an application and select to print and then check the appropriate paper source menu to see if cassette 2 is the default.

  • Firefox will not open up after i restored to default settings

i recently restored firefox to default settings on my profile on windows xp computer now firefox will not load on my profile but does on my fathers profile.whats up???????????

    Hi jonbeme,
Thank you for your question. I understand after you reset Firefox, that Firefox will not open up on one of the accounts on this computer.
This is what happens when Firefox is Reset [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/reset-firefox-easily-fix-most-problems].
To test to see if the problem is the profile, use the Profile Manager to create a new profile. [[Use the Profile Manager to create and remove Firefox profiles]] If the problem goes away, you can then move your bookmarks and other important settings into the new profile.

  • Restoring orignal/default settings

Hi folks, OK, so I get my new mac Book Pro (she's a beauty) and I plug in my external hard drive, select the folders containing my pictures, and 'click'.......presto, it seems my pictures (about 10,000 of them) are being imported nicely!
Then, disaster, the pooch decides it time to move, gets caught up in the hard drive power cable and unplugs it! I leap to help her, knock my coffee all over the place which panics her more and she runs off dragging the drive with her and sittin g in the corner shaking! Bless her!
I saved the dog, she's fine, so don't panic.....BUT, having deleted all those pictures imported to that point to try and do the process again, I find that each time I click the i-Photo icon, a message comes up telling me that some photo's have been found 'in the library' which have not been imported. These folders are saved in Users, but the folders are empty????
I've dragged them to trash, I've double click deleted them but each time, the same?
Does anyone know how I can reset the i-Photo to it's original settings please? I can't find 'Restore Factory settings' in help?
    Thanks for listening!!
    KP

Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a Folder called 'Import' or 'Importing'.
Drag it to the Desktop. *Make no other changes*.
    Start iPhoto. Does that help?
If it does then look inside that folder on your desktop. Does it contain anything you want? If not you can trash the folder.
    Regards

  • [SOLVED] Can't restore Gnome default settings

    Hi,
I just wanted to try out the new Gnome 2.20, however when I try to start it up, I get a very very very messed up Desktop. I can't do almost anything. No icons (well, only stupid generic file icons for everything), no menus, can't open files. I have tried to remove all the gnome related and gnome apps related hidden folders in my home directory (I also ended up deleting my whole .config folder, just to be sure), but for the love of me, it doesn't affect my current *configuration*. I have never had such an odd problem, I'm posting a screenshot.
Could anybody give me any hint since I am quite confused?
    Thanks a lot!

I just found out, reading this thread, that I need to reinstall libx11, but I have libx11-xcb installed, for some reason, which conflicts with it. If I try to uninstall it, it obviously brings down quite a few apps... But the main thing is that uninstalling libx11-xcb hangs:
    $ sudo pacman -Rcs libx11-xcb
    checking dependencies...
error: could not find xfce-utils in database -- skipping
error: could not find xfce-utils in database -- skipping
    <and so on endlessly>

  • My Time Capsule has stopped working.  Restoring default settings does not work.

I have a 2TB Time Capsule (Model No. A1409).  I think that it is approximately 20 months old.  It has been working very well until around two months ago, when it began to display the flashing amber light.  At that time I performed a hard reset, restoring the default settings.  This worked and the capsule continued backing up perfectly for a further three weeks.  However, about three weeks back the flashing amber light returned.  As I have been busy elsewhere I was not able to attend to this untl recently.  It does not seem to matter how many times I reset the device, I cannot return it to a working state.
The capsule has previously been set up to connect to the internet through my existing broadband service.  As such, it was initially set up and subsequently restored wirelessly.  I no longer seem to be able to achieve this.  Has anybody else experienced similar difficulties and if so, were you able to remedy it.
Grateful for any advice.  I feel another trip to the Genius Bar coming on.

    Yeah absolutely - no problem.
I had the same thing happen where I did a restore on my personal TimeCapsule (TC),
and when I updated the device after installing it, it for some reason set the TC into bridged mode shutting off DHCP/NAT service.
Which means, that it doesn't reserve an IP for any client trying to attach. This is what it sounds like yours is doing.
So if you see that it says bridged, and that box with dhcp reservation is greyed out, change it from bridged to DHCP/NAT.
This will allow any client (computer/device) to attach and reserve an IP address for access to the internet.
Once that is set, and you update, hopefully the light should go green.
I would also recommend checking the "internet" tab, and making sure that your IP address is assigned using DHCP. (It probably is - but that part is essential for communication with your Internet Service Provider (ISP)...
SO - if the device goes green after the update:
If it does, then go back into the router and click on the wireless tab and confirm your wireless settings are correct, if any changes are made, update.
At that point, you should be able unplug your laptop to wirelessly connect to the router.

  • Restore default settings

What happens when you restore factory default settings, do you lose all calender and contact info ??, does doing a restore re-install missing software??
    regards
    paulanthony

    Hi there,
Restoring factory settings does not wipe out any user data BUT, you should always (I mean always) do a backup if you can't afford to lose any of your user data. Restoring factory settings will erase all Access Points and customised settings to the phone, amongst other things.
A hard reset will return your phone to the factory condition, erasing ALL user data/settings, and any applications added to the device not included as part of the original firmware.
    Hope this helps.

  • How can I restore default settings in Firefox?

You won't believe this... the cat jumped on the desk and flopped down on the keyboard when in Firefox. True. Now the images in some websites are to big for the screen and I have to scroll or pan to see the whole page whereas before I could view the whole page. Also, when I click on home, instead of opening only one tab Firefox opens two extra tabs and fills one with Gmail and the other with Facebook. I tried going back to the Firefox version before version 4 but still the same. I think I need to restore my default settings but I can't find anywhere to do this.

    hi Ben,
I found two files called AdobeDreamweaverSettingsPrefs  (.xml and.tmp)
I removed them , emptied trash and restarted dreamweaver but the font stacks are sill missing.

  • Can someone tell me where to go to reset all default settings?

Hello.  When printing pictures from the program the colors are coming out terribly wrong.  It is NOT the printer as I can print just fine from other programs.  Do I need to restore the default settings?

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1.3. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
Tip 2 - If you're updating via wifi, place your iPad close to your router to preclude getting a corrupted download.

  • Vista will not boot/install after performing a restore to factory settings on satellite l305

I have a satellite l305 that i bought new thru walmart.com about a year & a half ago, and for the past few months it seems like there are more & more issues with this pc that are causing it not to work properly-everything from drivers failing-or even disappearing, in some cases-to  crashing into a blue screen everytime i insert a micro sd card into the slot.. My sound drivers are gone & even after i THOUGHT i downloaded them again, they still won't install or even recognize that they are there and then yesterday it suddenly stopped being able to fully load some of my fave games  that i play daily.. I have tried EVERY SINGLE SUGGESTION in EVERY  article, forum, help site, etc.,that i could find & even tried to get help over the phone from a pc tech here locally, and nothing has been able to fix my issues. I have done so many system restores from so many different restore points, installed updates, uninstalled updates, tried to install new drivers, rolled back drivers, started in safe mode to do diagnostics checks, entered BIOS & checked EVERY setting, reset all settings to default, checked error logs, etc., etc., etc...I have even completely disassembled my entire laptop & checked all wiring, fuses, etc., made sure everything was working, etc., So, finally yesterday I decided that it's gotta be something to do with a tech issue-probably with my vista home premium OS that came pre-installed at purchase, so i thought it best to just go ahead & go into the back up & restore & back up all my files onto an external hd using the file transfer wizard option inside the restore center, and then proceed into restoring the pc to it's factory, or "out of box", state. And i assumed i covered my bases by saving the back up-just in case...ohhh no-not the case at all!
It did't even occur tp me to that i might need an actual BOOT disk for vista after the fact. I just assumed that "out of box" meant just how it originally came-WITH vista pre-installed & ready to set up-like it did the day i bought it! i also was under the assumption that, isnce it never asked for a product key or anyting to activate vista then, that it wouldn't need one now either. But anyway, so this is where i'm at now-after i did the factory restore & turned it back on, it said to wait while windows finishes installing-but it never finished, then finally about an hour later, it said that windows was unexpectedly interrupted during installation & did not complete, and for me to restart pc to try install again. But after i did that, it was the same thing over & over. it NEVER installs!
So then i decided to go ahead & "restore windows using back up image" that i created on my external hd prior to  the factory restore, thinking that  it would just kinda pu **bleep** all back, but thats not working either. it recognizes the drive, and takes me to a menu where i can actually even view all the files on the drive and even tho they are known by my pc to be back up files, it still won't associate them to being back up files to MY PC!! I even got desperate enough to find a site that claimed to offer a free vista boot disk in the form of an iso image that i burned onto cd & tried to boot from as well. That actually took me to an install screen for windows & all the way to where it asks for product key-which DID NOT come locatedon any sticker anywhere on my laptop, and because they DID NOT include any OS utility, install, or boot disks with the purchase of my laptop, i don't know what the product key is OR where else i might be able to find that info, and i WILL NOT pay for ANOTHER ONE,  just because they were too lazy or cheap to send  the disks with the pc! so i tried to skip this step till later, but when i skip it, it shows anpther error saying that install was terminated & could not finish install & if i wish to continue, for me to restart my pc & re-attempt install..WHAT IS GOING NE WITH THIS AND WHAT CAN I POSSIBLY DO TO JUST BE ABLE TO USE MY LAPTOP AGAIN?? HELP ME PLEASE SOMEONE!!

    Hi,
I do not really understand... Did you made a backup before restore to factory settings? And did you copy all backup files to an external device? If not, the data is gone!
Why? Restoryng to factory does not mean a reinstallation. It means to fill the whole harddisk with an image of the first (factory) installation. All other data will be destroyd! Other partitions are deleted and normally you find only one big partition - the whole hdd.
If you have a complete backup on external drive and it is corrupted during restore, try to open the files manually. Maybe you can restore some single files.
    Good luck
    kind regards
    Stefan
