Satellite U500-186 - slow start-up
Hi All
My wife's Satellite U500-186 is so slow to start up and load anything. It runs on Win 7 Home and is standard as bought spec.
It takes about 2-3 minutes just to start up and load Live Mail.
Running AVG anti virus and not a lot else. Only used for surfing and email.
Also loses WiFi if it goes to sleep which I get but when you start it again you have to disable and re-enable the WiFI adaptor to connect again.
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks
Hi
Many processes which are running or start in the background would slow down the system.
You can disable some, not very important processes from automatic startup.
In search type: MSCONFIG.
Now new window would open and there you should choose the tab called Start up.
Now you would see all processes which would be loaded at the beginning.
You can uncheck the single processes in order to disable it from startup.
But be careful! Dont disable processes which are important for system.
If you dont know the meaning of each process use google to get more info!

Satellite L300 - Very slow start up and freezes
Hi all,
I have a Satellite L300 which has treated me well - however over the past 2 months it has got really slow and freezes quite often. I have run through anti virus, spybot etc and come up with nothing.
Last night I tried to reformat the system by pressing and holding 0 which did not work then tried with F8 which let me do a further scan but no reformat. I am now quite pleased that I failed to do the reformat as I purchased windows 7 after the original purchase of the laptop.
Any ideas anyone - or anyone with the same/simular problems?Hey,
That means you have Windows 7 installed at the moment and not preinstalled Windows version?!
Well, in this case the HDD recovery option is not available anymore. You can do this on preinstalled Windows only.
To format your notebook you need Toshiba recovery disk.
Did you create it? -
Re: Satellite A300D-15B - slow start up
Hi,
1) I recently bought the current laptop and it takes a really long time to start up and be able to work with. After that it works perfectly fine. Actualy the time it needs to start up is exactly 3 minutes. Any recommendations? I really need help.
2) Is there any chance that I can install a copy of windows XP on this machine?
Thanks in advance
NicosHello Nicos
Yesterday I have made start up test with my brand new Satellite A300-1IA (PSAGCE). The result is very interesting. I have checked the time from pressing power button to the point where all stuff are load and desktop ready for use.
So there is the whole story:
I have installed factory image to get Factory settings again. When the configuration was finished notebook needs 2 minutes and 40 seconds for start.
So the next step was update check. Microsoft offers 22 updates and 108 MB data that can be installed. Ok I have installed all this and restarted notebook several times. After update installation notebook needs 3 minutes and 12 seconds for boot up.
What a difference. What you think?
The last step was my own Vista configuration:
-removing all useless software from the system
-removing preinstalled antivir application and installation of Avira Antivir software (for me definitely the best one because it doesnt need so many resources)
-disabling start up for all processes that I dont need (MSCONFIG)
-disabling all hardware components I dont need in device manager (modem, multicard reader, PCMCIA slot, firewire)
After doing all this Satellite A300-1IA needs for start up 1 minute and 15 seconds only.
I think it is good time for Vista. What do you think about this start up time?
BTW: my brother has NOD32 but I dont like it. -
Satellite 2450-201: slow start up and shutdown
I HAVE A SATTELITE 2450-201 AND I RUN ON WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION I HAVE DONE A REGISTRY CLEANER ON EVERYBODYS USER NAME USING REGISTRY FIX 5.5
I HAVE DEFRAGED MA PC AND ALSO OPTIMIZED MY MSCONFIG START UP OBJECTS AND EVEN UPDATED BIOS.
THE RESULT IS EXTREMLY FASTER WHEN I LOGON AND ACTUALLY ON WINDOWS BUT THE SAME OLD VERY SLOW SHUTDOWN AND BOOT UP SO WHAT DO I DO.
THE WINDOWS BAR GOES ALONG AT LEAST 15 - 20 TIMES ON BOOT UP HELP!There is no much to explain.
Its possible that this happens because of any 3rd connected devices
The fact is also that after a long time of Windows usage the OS doesnt run fast like at the beginning of the OS installation.
During the notebooks usage and installation and reinstallation of many applications the OS goes slower and slower. This is a usually process and from time to time a new OS installation does wonders.
This is all what I can suggest. -
Satellite Pro - Slow start up and sound is messed up
I have had my *Toshiba Satellite Pro* with *Windows XP* for a good few years now. She has always worked like a gem and has given me no problems until a few weeks ago.
A few weeks ago I was downloading a program and with it came the very unwanted and unliked "Antivir Solutions" virus. I did everything I could to get rid of this disaster (thanks to the help of support forums) and I think I managed to get rid of it, but ever since then my computer has not been the same.
I was having trouble downloading a PDF document a few days ago and it froze so I tried to restart which caused the computer to have a hissy fit, deleting my user account which meant I had to set all that up again from scratch. And, now, the computer takes a good 45 minutes from the time you press the "ON" button to when it is ready to start working. Not to mention, it takes a good 10 minutes each time you click an icon for the program to actually start..
I have tried defragmenting the system and have tried uninstalling unused programs to speed the computer up, but it hasn't worked.
I have also run several antivirus programs (such as Norton, AVG and Microsoft Security Essentials) to make sure I have no nasties messing me up, but they come up clean.
May I also add- The sound is messed up also. Whether I use the inbuilt speakers or external speakers the sound is disjointed and broken. As is any Video I play.
I just don't know what to do.
I cannot really afford a new computer, but I need my computer to be reliable. I use my computer for 12 out of the 24 hours in each day...
*What can I do?*Hi nicoletrist,
I dont know what notebook you have exactly but I think the slow Windows start is caused due the viruses that you have or had.
Few years ago I had also a virus and it was causing a very slow start up, it did take up to 10 minutes until Windows was loaded and the only solution to get rid of this was using Toshiba recovery disk.
I would recommend the same to you. Use the Toshiba recovery disk to restore factory settings and backup your data because everything on HDD will be deleted.
Im sure after using recovery disk your notebook will run like a charm again! :) -
Satellite E105: Slow Start Up
Whenever my satellite E105 is completely shut down it seems to take a very long time to start up and beginning running normally. Is this normal or is there something I should be doing about this?

Satellite U500 - Copy process is very slow
Hi friends,
I'm using Satellite U500-1f5, for last 2 months. It is core i5 with Windows 7. Still the copying process is very slow and some times booting is little bit slower.
Can anyone post a valid answer to resolve this problem?Hey mate,
Sounds like that you have installed a lot of software that slows down the performance of your notebook.
So which programs you have installed?
Theoretically it could also be caused due a virus or trojan. You should check your notebook for viruses using a good antivirus program like AntiVir.
Try also to defragment the HDD. If you install/uninstall many programs, you should defragment the HDD from time to time. You can use the integrated Windows defragmentation tool. -
Satellite U500-11C fan sometimes doesn't start running Win 7 64bit
Hello,
I have two Toshiba Satellite U500-11C under Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bits. Sometimes, after a new Windows start, fans don't start and just run a few seconds sometimes. When this happens, the CPU temperature gets very hot (don't know exactly how much). I've found a way to get back to a normal behavious by just unplugging the AC cable and replug it just one second or two after.
Must two laptops have the latest Bios and drivers from Toshiba. In some way, it is the same behavious as under Linux.
With those experiences, I come to think that Toshiba Laptop are not well managing correctly ACPI Fans and tempartures. Is it really a fatality ??
Hope this feedback can help...Hello Tonny,
Yes, I think like you that when I have this fan issue, it means that BIOS feature doesn't work correclty on regulating temperature with variable fan speeds, and finally, it is the overheating security which makes the job. When using Linux, I've seen that ACPI temperature levels are not correctly defined or published by the BIOS : Fans are not expected to be launched before the CPU burns at more than 108C !
What surprises me is that this is a bug in the BIOS that has been living here since the first BIOS versions, and that my researches on various forums show that this Satellite U500-11C is not the only one to have fan issues from Toshiba Laptops on both Linux and Windows.
That said, I don't understand what Toshiba tries to do when making special BIOS versions, instead of using more standard ones with correct ACPI functions programmed inside. Other laptop manufacturers are more "standard" in their approach, and give users more satisfaction on everyday use.
In the same idea, I've finally removed most of Toshiba applications on one of my two Satellite U500-11C and it runs much better : lower power consumption, less heating, more responsiveness, ...
Hope this helps... -
Slow start up and Shut Down since upgrading to Mountain Lion - Etrecheck Result query
Hello, I have recently upgraded my operating system from Snow Leopard to the latest Mountain Lion from the app store. My Macbook Pro (early 2010) is now experiencing slow start up times (more than 1 minute) and slow shut down (more than 45 seconds). Programs such as iPhoto and Firefox are now taking a long time to start up too and the multicoloured wheel is appearing a lot.It was always snappy and very quick with Snow Leopard. I have seen that quite a lot of people seem to have had similar issues too.
I have Verified and Repaied my disk, reset SMC, and PRAM numerous times and cleared the system caches, as well as making a new user account and opened in Safe Mode. "Searchlight" has finished indexing. Nothing I've done so far has helped the issue. I have run an Etrecheck and note that a few things have "failed", the results are below. Does anyone know what these items do or how to correct them? These could be the cause of the issue as they are Apple items - e.g. account, ID and @me.com processes.
I did not do a clean/fresh installation of Mountain Lion, but I did verify the Snow Leopard disk before I installed it. I'm thinking perhaps to do a clean install but I'm not sure if this will resolve the "failed" Etrecheck issues or not?
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks in advance.

Satellite U500 - Bluetooth issues BT Monitor vs. Bt Stack
Hello everyone,
My wife's machine is a Satellite U500-10L PSU5EE-002003AR, now with Windows 7 Professional 64-bit (originally with Vista pre-installed, later with W7Pro 32-bit.)
Now, I've always had various issues with Bluetooth on this machine, and it's the only machine I've ever had Bluetooth issues with, mostly having to do with internet connectivity via mobile phones.
Most usually, I connect to the internet using Sony Ericsson PC Suite and a Bluetooth-controlled Sony Ericsson mobile phone (currently and Elm, and occasionally a Hazel or a C702.) This setup has always worked flawlessly on every other machine I've used, such as my Getac B300, the old HP Compaq 6710b given to me by my previous employer for a couple of years, and even my untrustworthy old Thinkpad T42 (now deceased), and my mother's ancient Macbook. With those machines, I've never had any trouble connecting to any of the phones or to the internet, with no drops, connection issues or any other issues.
Not so with this U500. I'm writing this while connected through PC Suite, with Bluetooth Monitor 4 as the hardware controller. The connection is intermittent at best, usually unreliable, and sometimes downright impossible. Sometimes it works flawlessly for days on end, and sometimes it just refuses to work. Generally, though, I get a connection more often than not, but the issue is annoying nevertheless.
Now, I tried a different approach: I uninstalled Bluetooth Monitor and SE PC Suite, installed the Toshiba Bluetooth Stack and tried to connect to the internet directly through the BT Stack. I paired the Elm to the U500 successfully from the BT Stack control panel and managed to dial the connection, so far so good. But I had no internet access whatsoever. Now, the phone shows that it's actually connected, and so does the BT Stack control panel and the Windows 7 connectivity monitor in the system tray, but there's no actual access to the internet (I only get the little yellow triangle with the +no internet access+ message, but the phone is dialed in.)
So, I tried reinstalling PC Suite (with BT Stack present), and things got even worse: now the BT connection itself between PC Suite and the phone is only sporadic and intermittent, but sometimes it just works well enough to actually get a connection (albeit an unreliable one.)
So now I've uninstalled the BT Stack, reinstalled BT Monitor and went back to using PC Suite for dialing, and the same issues I mentioned earlier still persist.
Now, my two questions are these: a. why didn't I get any internet access with BT Stack, even though the phone was actually dialed in to the connection? and b. assuming the internet access issue is resolved, would I possibly get a more reliable connection (i.e. one that doesn't suddenly decide to drop every so often) with BT Stack instead of the PC Suite/BT Monitor setup?
Thanks in advance.Just an update: I've found that as long as there is a direct line of sight between the phone and the U500, there would be no issues. The Bluetooth connectivity issue only starts to appear whenever there's something - anything - in the way between the two.
Let me clarify. Now I'm sitting at my desk, with the U500 right in front of me, while the mobile phone is hanging from a nail in the wall above me and to the left. Now that there's a direct line of sight between the phone and the U500, I have no issues at all.
Now, let's say I take the U500 off the desk, put in on my lap, and turn my back to the phone. In this case, my head and torso would be in the way of a direct line of sight between the two, and the stability of the connection begins to deteriorate, and it becomes very unreliable - sometimes even dropping the Bluetooth connection altogether (Sony Ericsson PC Suites goes all gray on me!)
Here's another example: there's a printer sitting on the desk right to my left. Now, if I stack up a bunch of magazines on top of the printer, high enough to be within the line of sight, I will start having issues!
So, I'm pretty sure it's a Bluetooth connectivity issue, and has nothing to do with the internet connection or firewall. It's clearly a hardware quality issue.
By contrast, I never experienced any such issue with my B300, the HP Compaq 6710b I had earlier, or even with my now-deceased ThinkPad T42. Hell, I might as well have gone into a different room entirely and still maintained a Bluetooth connection with those three machines! With the Toshiba, though, as soon as I carry the thing out the door - which is about four feet from the phone - the connection is gone! -
Satellite U500-1F5: eco and FN buttons don't work after BIOS update
Hi everyone,
I hope i can find a solution for my problems in here.
I bought a new Toshiba Satellite U500 (PSU9ME),
I am updating my laptop regularly whenever i receive alert through TEMPRO or Toshiba service center.
Last week I received an alert to updat the BIOS and i did it. since then i noticed the following problems:
1. eco utility is not working, and when i tried to uninstall it it says (BIOS unsupported)
2. the on screen funtion buttons that appear on the top of the screen when you press the Fn button does not apear anymore
3. the touchpad lock and unlock button does not work and even pressing Fn+F9 doesnot lock it
I hope u can give me an answer regarding my problems,
I already downloaded the latest updates for the eco and value added packege from toshiba site and installed them,
BUT
didnt solve any of my prob
still eco utility is not working. The msg (unsupported BIOS), appear when i run the update.
The function buttons bar on the top of the screen not working ( even after i uninstall the toshiba value package and re-install the latest one) and the touch back lock/unlock button also is not working.
I hope Toshiba can find me a solution, coz I dont have the time to go the service center
Model U500-1F5 PSU9ME00D00XAR
Windows 7 (64)
Thanx in advanceHello
At first just one comment:
*I am updating my laptop regularly whenever i receive alert through TEMPRO or Toshiba service center.*
Thats nice but definitely not necessary. When the system runs well, don't touch or change anything. Maybe sounds stupid now but I recommend you to remove TEMPRO from the system. Believe me you don't need it. I have 2 years old Satellite A300 and still original BIOS. It runs perfectly and I don't want to make risk and change anything. Since last month I have Satellite U500-1EX and will do the same. Tempro is already removed and I am happy with factory settings.
All you have done is OK but at least you can try to reinstall whole OS now using HDD recovery option (F8 at start-up) to see if everything will works well again. sorry but if this will not help I think you need BIOS downgrade to old version. -
Satellite U500 - Black edges on external monitor
Hello,
I have problems with HDMI connection to TV.
At FULL HD resolution is in 42" FULL HD TV about 4 cm black edges all around display.
I tried with 3 different HDMI cables, 2 different FULL HD TV and one LCD screen, but everywhere were black edges. Black edges appears when you start computer (at first Toshiba screen and BIOS too).
With same cables and monitors but other laptop is picture without edges.
When I was tryed with HDMI cable (stl.U500) which have got on the other side DVI output (LCD FULL HD screen) was picture without black edges. With normal VGA - VGA cable is FULL HD picture also without edges.
Where could be a problem?
System is Windows 7 64bit with latest ATI display driver and latest BIOS (2.20).
GreetingsHi Mathew,
Im not a Satellite U500 owner but I assume there must be something wrong with the settings. I never had any problem with the HDMI connection to my external monitor or TV. Its always working fine.
Anyway, what screen resolution you are using on external monitor? You should use the native screen resolution on external monitor. Then you should be able to use fullscreen mode there.

Satellite U500/01C N-Trig DuoSense
Hi,
I recently purchased a brand new U500/01C ([PSU9BA-01C002|http://www.mytoshiba.com.au/products/notebooks/satellite/u500/psu9ba-01c002]) notebook computer with a N-Trig DuoSense digitizer (multitouch display) device built in. The device and software were working _perfectly_ up until about a week ago, when the software started displaying a notification window when opened "No devices found." The touch still works, however the functionality is limited (no multitouch or advanced gestures, etc.) and I can no longer calibrate the screen.
Despite the software reported no devices found, the hardware still shows up as installed and working properly in Device Manager; I have three entries under Digitizers: HID-compliant device x2 and N-Trig_DIGITIZER.
I have been troubleshooting and trying to solve the problem for the past week to no avail. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software, uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, removing the devices from Device Manager (including deleting drivers) and reinstalling, System Restore to multiple different restore points, reinstalling a fresh copy of Windows 7 from a retail disc and restoring the factory defaults from the TOSHIBA partition.
I have also searched everywhere I can think of for updated or even previous drivers but neither the [TOSHIBA website|http://www.mytoshiba.com.au/support/notebooks/satellite/u500/psu9ba-01c002/download] nor the [N-trig website|http://www.n-trig.com/CONTENT.ASPX?Page=Multi_touch] appear to have drivers for this model. The software/drivers I have been using are found in Start > All Programs > TOSHIBA > Applications and Utilities. They are version 2.224.
I have only tried 64-bit operating systems as I want to utilize all 4GB of memory. I have not yet tried a 32-bit installation.
Where should I go from here? I have contacted N-Trig but have not yet got a response. Is there a TOSHIBA support email I can write to? Should I try a 32-bit installation? Are there alternative drivers available anywhere? Have I got a faulty product?
Thanks in advance!Hi Jim,
Thanks for the suggestion, I can't believe I missed it (I was only searching TOSHIBA Australia I think)
I have tried these drivers but there is no difference. Also, these drivers were apparently older than those that came prebundled with the computer (2.181 vs. 2.224).
I am surprised than not even a fresh install of Windows (retail) nor restoring the computer to the out of box state have made any difference.
I still only have one touch point and still cannot calibrate or activate multitouch under the software (still get the "No devices found" window).
Hopefully there is a solution out there.
Thanks, Tim. -
Satellite U500 - High pitched noise
Hi,
I have a Toshiba Satellite U500 and the system itself seems to be working perfectly well. About a month ago, my laptop began to make a noise, an unbearable constant high pitched noise. The only time that the noise stops is when the laptop is off and for a very brief period when windows starts up.
The noise seems to come from the speakers, but it continues whether I mute the speakers or not*.Hi
> How to disconnect HDD to check what you suggest.
You can only remove it from the HDD bay the HDD bay is placed at the bottom of the unit and you have to remove the screw which secures the HDD bay cover.
Then you could remove the HDD carefully
But without HDD you are not able to boot into windows and as you already said you have discovered the issue. It seems to come from the speakers and its related to sound card.
Maybe you should update the sound card driver and BIOS
Otherwisce try to get in contact with an local ASP!!! -
Satellite A300-1MV slow boot up and slow running
I have recently bought an Satellite A300-1MV it runs vista,
I have the trial Mcafee running and the other pre-installed software that came on the laptop. My problem is that on boot up the computer seems to take a ridiculous amount of time to boot up, once past the vista orb it says please wait which lasts about a minute untill the password request appears.
I had a look in the problemreports in control panel and found that the toshiba tempro program was hanging on boot up so disabled it but didn't seem to have any effect, I also find that when for example you double click on a photo thumbnail to view it, it takes about 30 seconds to appear on the full screen allthough the window is shown on the start menu bar at the bottom allmost straight away.
I have defragged the hard drive, scandisk, memory checked, virus checked etc.. I compared it to a friends laptop dell that has less memory but same spec processor and vista and that appears to work 10 times faster.. any ideas?, I do wonder if its a toshiba program causing the problem.
I do though have a problem with acrobat reader opening of its own accord and telling me it can't read the file ( don't know what file)
I have uninstalled this and reinstalled but still have the same issue!...HELP!!!
CheersHello
Very nice thread about slow start up you can find under http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=134947
To be honest I don't like McAfee and I have installed other antivirus application that needs much more resources. Please read this interesting thread and let me know what do you think about it.
