Satellite U940 - SSD drive shows only 11.22GB

Hi,
I got a brand new Satellite U940-B484 Ultrabook.
The first thing I did was finishing the wizard, then I created the recovery media (using external DVD drive) on three 4.7GB DVD discs
We have Windows 8 Pro license, so my friend formatted the system and installed new Windows 8 Pro, he seems to be missed up with the drivers, so we decided to back to factory status to find and download the correct device drivers.
Even after we got the recovery completed we still have two issues:
Major issue: SSD drive shows only 11.22GB capacity!!
Minor issue: a device in the device manager isn't working correctly!!
Is there any logical explanation for the SSD size to go down from 32 GB to 11 GB????
The only think came across my mind was the possibility to have 2x16GB and the RAID (for some reason) changed from RAID 0 to RAID 1. But even if that is true, where on earth can I change that from?

> Major issue: SSD drive shows only 11.22GB capacity!!
On my clean preinstalled Satellite U940 SSD is listed as unallocated drive with 11.19GB capacity. As far as I know this small SSD is not there for data saving but as small drive that helps and allows fast start-up.
Fast start-up is a setting that helps your PC start up faster after shutdown. Windows does this by saving system info to a file upon shutdown. When you start your PC again, Windows uses that system info to resume your PC instead of restarting it.

Which device? USB host controller maybe?

  • LENOVO U310, windows 7, SSD drive showing in bios but not in the disk management

    Hi,
    I recently installed windows 7.
But after installing I found out the the computer is not waking from sleep. When I enter the password and press enter the screen becomes blank. I have to again restart the system.
Doing some googling I found out that SSD drive does the caching when iRST is used.
So I tried to look for SSD in the Disk management, But I can see only 1 500 GB HHD. It doesn't show the SSD drive.
Even the Intel Rapid Storage technology is not detecting. It shows internal empty port 0.
But when I checked in the BIOS, in the system information i can see the SSD mentioned.
If any one of you have faced the same problem and/or know some work around then please help.
    Thanks,
    Sumit

Sounds one of the following problems:
1.) The drive is formatted MBR w/ win 8 features enabled / legacy disabled.
2.) A "dynamic" drive is present.

  • Satellite U500-1E0 - Webcam shows only black screen

    Hi everyone,
I have this problem, my webcam doesnt work. It has a blue light on which indicates that it is running but it only displays black screen. I've tried updating software, uninstalling it, reintstalling again but nothing helped. I even downloaded a new driver from Toshiba website but nothing.
Please, does anyone have any kind of solution to this problem?
    My laptop is Satellite U500-1E0

    Hey,
If the webcam shows just a blank screen I could imagine its just a wrong webcam setting.
On Toshiba website I did found a useful article I think:

  • Configuring D20 with 2 SSD drives in Raid 0, only a single drive shows up

I had this machine for several years configured with a single 128gb SSD and I decided to put in a pair of Samsung 256GB SSD drives that I had around and I planned on configuring them as Raid 0.  I have plugged them into the blue sata ports on the motherboard and no matter what combination I use it only ever sees one of the drives.  The other device doesn't show up in the Marvell raid utility or in the Bios.  I have updated the bios to the latest and still am not having any luck.  Any feedback is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance
    Matt

I saw this issue also come across my email this week.  We're looking into it here.  It would be helpful to know what specific SSDs you're trying to user (i.e. the model numbers of the samsung 256GB drives) as well as what level FW your Marvell controller is at.  You should see the firmware listed as the system boots and loads the Marvell OPROM during POST.
We've seen situations in the past where you plug two drives in the system, but it only recognizes one (but you can plug each drive in individually and it will be recognized correctly).  Generally this had to do with information in the ID string for the drive.  Either the drive wasn't programmed with unique IDs, or the Marvell FW isn't reading the string correctly and is missing the unique part of the string.  The controller uses that string to uniquely identify each drive.
I'll update this later once we make some progress on it.

  • Optical drive not showing up on satellite L75-b after ssd drive install

I just installed an ssd drive in my satilite L75-B7150. I had to unscrew the locking screw on the opticol drive and slide it out. Now it wont show up in this PC windows 8.1. it does have power and the light led comes on a while with a disk in it but then goes out. It seems to be plugged in ok but im hessitant to take the back all off again.Could it be a driver problem? there doesnt seem to be any spacific drivers for it.

    Richard,
You do have a failure of the backside L2 cache, a common problem on the Lombard. This memory is soldered to the microprocessor card and the only fix is a replacement card.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=51159
I don't know if the failed L2 cache memory would cause a problem with the HD on the internal IDE bus controller; it apparently does not via the USB bus.
Generally, users who have the failed L2 cache do not have a successful startup unless they reset the power manager. Try this: With the Lombard turned off, reset the power manager and see if it will start up to the internal HD. If no success, shut down, insert your OS 9.2 CD, reset the power manager, and see if the HD appears on the desktop after booting to the CD.

How to install PC companion on other drive??  (My SSD on C: only have 5gb)
PC companion v2.1 dont ask to install the soft on a drive! lol!
Its standard any application setup, in the world, offer you a path or drive to choose to install.  Why Sony not add this in the setup?

Not true - If a program needs to download files to perform certain tasks then it will only install to the C: drive so as in this case when you perform system updates or system repairs the firmware files are downloaded to the root ie: C: drive

  • My 4GB USB drive is only showing 217.2MB available, any ideas how to fix this?

My 4GB USB drive is showing only 217.2MB available but there isn't anything displayed in the Finder window that I can delete.  Any ideas?

    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

  • SSD Internal Drive Showing Up As External Drive!

    Hello,
My Internal SSD is showing up as an external drive.  I did a backup of all the data to another drive, erased it and re-partitioned it but it is still showing as a removable external drive.  I don't know what to do as it "was" my startup drive so in the meantime I installed OSX on another drive for now.  Would there possibly be a terminal command to change the drive to internal or something else I can do?
    I appreciate the help.
Here are some pics to help hopefully.

As LexSchellings said, anything not on the built-in internal bus is considered external by the OS.
By the way, don't look at your device using System Information because that will really set your head spinning:

  • My windows volume alias now shows only total drive size, not available?

Recently I wanted to take my FAT32 windows partition and convert it to NTFS. I also wanted to expand the space allocated to that partition. I didn't want to lose certain programs that I had on the windows drive.
Someone on these boards recommended a particular command line that is used to convert the FAT32 to NTFS. Then, from there I could use WinClone to clone the drive, expand it, and then put this image back on.
That all worked fine but now on my Mac desktop, I see the icon/alias for my mac drive and the windows drive. But windows shows only the total allocated hard drive space, not the available space. Is there a way I can have this show available like it used to do?
    Thanks.

I wonder how you did that. AFAIK, this is completely impossible from OS X and can only be done from windows. or do you mean a command line in windows?

AFAIK, OS X always showed just total capacity for bootcamp partition formatted NTFS when you view it on the desktop. I don't know why that is but I've never seen it different. just a hunch but maybe if you make the NTFS partition writable by using NTFS-3g or NTFS for Mac by Paragon it will show used space too. I suspect Finder might be reading that info from some metadata it stores on the drive itself.
    Thanks.

  • Satellite P205D-S7802 - DVD drive shows as D: and the CD shows as C

I have a Satellite P205D-S7802. The DVD drive shows as D: and the CD shows as C: Should both be D?
Neither works but the DVD was the last to do so.
If they should both be D: how do I change it?
My system is Vista 32 bit.
    Any help is appreciated.

    Hi mate
In my Computer you should see the HDD and CD /DVD drive.
Usually the HDD or the partition of the HDD is listed as C and the CD/DVD drive should be listed as D or other letter.
Everything depends on partition created on the HDD because every partition is assigned to an certain letter.
However, the letters can be changed in disk management of Windows OS.
Right click on My Computer -> manage -> disk management
Here you can change the letters.
    Regarding the CD/DVD drive:
I recommend removing the CD/DVD drive from the device manager list.
Simple delete it and reboot the unit.
After new reboot, then OS should recognize the ODD again

  • Dual boot Linux - Windows on Satellite U940

    Hello to everyone.
I'm quite new on this forum and I have a brand new Toshiba Satellite U940-10N? Using Linux for 2 years, I'd like to install a debian wheezy distribution on it.
On my former computer, only Debian was installed so I'm net really comfortable with dual boot especially with the ssd.
I don't really like windows but I keep it to work sometimes on it.
Do you think it would be better to install the linux system on the system like I've seen it on most of threads, with only the /home on the HDD ? Or do you think it would be interesting to build another raid like it is now for windows ? Would I have better perfomances and speed that way ?
Another question : is it possible to have an ext4 data partition and make windows to see it or do I have to write it in ntfs ? I have noticed that fat32 and ntfs written on linux with gparted are not reconized by windows 8.
Those are my questions for now.
    Thank you for your help.

    Hi there
First let's look at your situation - the U940-10N will most likely be a Win8 unit, right?
If YES - then the BIOS has to be set up to boot UEFI.
    Secure Boot can be disabled.
It seems Debian is not so far in supporting UEFI / EFI boot modes.
Look at this announcement from back in October:
    http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/News/2012/20121018
So, you will need to make sure your debian flavor can boot in UEFI boot mode.
If not, You will have issues getting both OS'es (Debian and Win8) to live side by side and boot without issues.
Next, You'll need to make sure Debian is able to install a boot loader that takes Windows 8 into account and is able to start that OS.
Looking at storage, I tried to install Fedora on a dual-storage system (SSD + HDD).
I installed the OS on the SSD and my Home structure was placed on the HDD.
    This worked very very well.
I think this also provides the best performance, however I have no real statistics to back it up.
Ext4 is not supported by Windows out of the box, but there is a driver existing which implements ext2,3,4 support for Windows: http://www.ext2fsd.com/
If You ask me, I would rather have Linux accessing an NTFS partition than have Windows trying to write to an Ext2/3/4 partition. I am fully confident in the NTFS support from Linux but not the other way around.
If the Fat and NTFS partitions are not recognised by Windows, please check that the partitions are Fat32 or NTFS.
It may be that the file systems are NTFS / Fat but the partitions have Linux signatures.
    Hope this helps
    BR Tom

  • Macbook Pro Retina doesn't see internal SSD drive

    Hi Guys,
I have a problem with my Macbook Pro Retina 13(late 2012). Yesterday I've done clean install of Yosemite. Everything worked fine, and I wanted to restore my files using Time Machine. So I restarted it (command +R), plugged in my extertal hard drive, turned on TM restore option and chose my SSD drive as a place to install. Mac asked me to enter password for the SSD (default filevault2 in yosemite), I entered the password, system accepted it and then something went wrong. System told me to restart mac and try again. I restarted it, and did like previous but this time, my mac stopped to see his internal SSD drive. System was asking where to install yosemite form Time Machine and there were no drive to choose. I turned on disc utility, and I see my SSD drive there but I can't erase it, or unlock (picture in appendage). I can only verify disc and it shows that drive is fine. I've tried to install Yosemite on my external drive and boot from there,to unlock SSD in settings(I've chose my Ex. drive as a place to install Yosemite) but it didn't work. I even tried internet recovery (command+option+R) but I didn't help, SSD drive was still useless.
I think my SSD is still locked, but I don't know how to unlock it now. I don't need to use Time Machine anymore(I have my files in other drive too). It can be clean install but please, can somebody tell me what to do? I have exams this week and really need a computer :<

Start your mac up by holding the alt key. That is boot from function.
If its empty then you might have a hard drive issue. Due to your hard drive being picked up but not the partition on the drive. This will most probably be a OS X reinstall.
Erase the drive and reinstall the OS X or run a recovery mode.
    Good luck

  • My hard drive is fried.  I need to reinstall moutain lion to a new SSD drive.  How do I install without media?

My hard drive fried.  I can't reinstall from the OSX utilities because it only shows the recovery partition.  I was thinking about adding an SSD drive.  But I dont know how to install OSX mountain lion without any media.  What are my choices?  What should I do?

First, the recovery option is built in to OS X - not the disk. If you install the new drive without formatting it first or without having an OS on it, it will not work (at least as far as I know). Most drives need to be formatted and it needs to be Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and use the GUID Partition Scheme.
You said that your hard drive is fried but that you can access the recovery? The Command + Option + R is the internet recovery which means it accesses Apple's servers and a limited number of things including disk utility. I've not dealt with this type of problems, so I'm not sure, but If you can access that and you have your new drive in an external enclosure and attached, then you may be able to use Disk Utility on the recovery to format your new drive and then choose to install the OS directly on it.
The second possibility - and, according to the following article, this should work directly (I've not tried it, so I can't guarantee it will):
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
The easiest way would be to attach the new drive in an enclosure and use your internal's disk utility to format and then clone the entire thing to it, but that does not appear to be an option. Unless...... do you have a bootable clone backup or a Time Machine backup?

  • Satellite A200 - Need driver for CD/DVD drive

    Hey folks.
Recently installed WXP Pro on my A200 PSAEC laptop, so I'm now dual booting XP and Vista on my laptop.
Problem is, I've got all the drivers working on XP and everything's running perfect, but when I tried to burn a DVD, Nero says the recorder can't burn DVDs. In "My Computer" the drive shows as a DVD-RW drive, but when I insert a blank DVD, it says CD Drive. The drive shows up as "TCSDcor' CD/DVDW TC-L6#2D" in device manager. I've searched around for a driver, but can't find an exact match for that drive and there's no optical drive drivers on this Toshiba site driver section. The only thing I've found is an executable file for upgrading the firmware, but it throws an error saying it's the wrong drive.
    Anyone got any ideas?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi
Toshiba European driver page provides three different firmware updates for Satellite A200 PSAEC series:
    TO02 for CD/DVD drive TS-L632
    TO02 - for CD/DVD drive TS-L632P
(This firmware solves some problems of the optical disc drive.)
    TO03 - for CD/DVD drive TS-L632H
(This firmware solves some problems of the optical disc drive.)
Im not quite sure what TO0$ means but I think the sign $ is only a free variable parameter (place marker).
If you want to check your current firmware then you could check it using the Nero Info Tool

  • Upgraded my 2009 iMac with ssd drive

    Hello
I wanted to share my experience with upgrading my late 2009 iMac replacing the DVD drive with a 240GB SSD drive and upgrading the hard drive to a 3TB hard drive. Back a year ago I upgraded the factory 1TB with a seagate 2TB which was the main internal drive holding the osx. With needing more room I discovered the seagate 3TB also had the necessary heat sensor connector, so I knew that 3TB drive would work. Adding the 240GB SSD was a last minute decision. Plus, I seldom use the factory standard DVD drive and discovered that my LG brand USB dvd drive actually works when attached to the iMac. Operates just like the factory DVD drive.
So having done an upgrade before on this machine, I was not too concerned, but have to add that all did not go well this time.
Alter removing the screen and all the screws, then while carefully unplugging all the wires attached to the monitor, that one plug labeled LCD TEMP, that tiny little plug, broke at the circuit board. I was not using too much pressure and suspect the stress on these delicate connections had reached the limit. Both from the previous upgrade, and now another. The plug was simply stressed and ready to give way.
Maybe this plug was defective, I don't know, but the snap-in plug pulled the top of the black plastic circuit board connector off, exposing the two copper connector prongs. Not only that, but the two copper prongs that were now exposed were curled upward. Making re-attachment of the plug near impossible. So I figured maybe i could re-attach the tiny LCD TEMP plug back onto the exposed prongs and then electrical tape over to hold in-place. But first I had to somehow get the curl out of the two copper connector prongs for the plug to connect.
Well, while using a small screw driver to try to flatten out the curled copper prongs, one copper prong exceeded its stress level and broke off. Could not take the stress of being bent and messed with. Everything inside these machines are extremely delicate, as everyone knows only too well that has ever opened up their imac.
And now, a broken LCD TEMP circuit board connector. What to do, what to do?
Kill two birds with one stone.....
But first I wondered if this LCD TEMP sensor would keep the system from operating, so I put the machine back together, half way together, and powered it up.
The machine came to life, however, the CPU fan was running crazy fast 3800 and noisy as ****.
Googling this, I came across another person that had the same LCD TEMP cable break, and saying their CPU fan went crazy in the same way.
So I realized somehow the system needed this LCD TEMP connector, connected.
What to do, what to do?
I ran over to radio shack and bought the lowest wattage soldering iron they sold.
Now, this killing two birds with one stone part...
I had to somehow solder two new wires onto the spot where this LCD TEMP board connector attached to the circut board.
No easy task since there was only a hair-lines space between the two circuit board connectors. I had to somehow achieve the impossible.
And while at it, killing off the second bird, I could replace this LCD TEMP wire itself with new much longer wire set, making this disassemble - reassemble thing much easier.
    Well I pulled it off.
I was able to solder two new wires to the spots on the circuit board where this LCD TEMP connector sits.
Without bleeding solder onto the partner connector just a hairs-line spaced between.
Then I patched in this new and longer pair of wires from the circuit board LCD TEMP to the monitor LCD TEMP sensor.
And finally, replaced the DVD drive with the new 240GB SSD drive, slapped the machine back together half way just enough to power it up, cloned the osx hard drive to the SSD drive, "option-restart" the machine and booted from the new SSD drive, everything working as it should.
I even dismounted the orginal internal hard drive holding the osx, and ran the system to ensure everything worked, which it did.
Next, tore the iMac back down, replaced the 2TB hard drive with a new 3TB hard drive, and for a final time slapped the system back together.
    Everything is operating perfect,
Naturally, had to format the new 3TB hard drive, and will move all my iTunes media back to that new drive I had temporally stored on an external USB drive.
Fans are all running at normal speeds.
System is once again silent when running.
And this is the last and final time I will ever upgrade this particular machine sober.
Just some advice, this is some of the unforeseen mishaps that can occur when upgrading any iMac.
And this could have ended in disaster.
Luckily however, I had just enough luck and experience to get thru the hurdles, now I have a better, bigger, faster iMac.
Like they say, this self upgrading is not for the faint of heart.
For awhile I seen myself listing this on eBay as a dead 27" late 2009 iMac for sale for parts.
Not the case, well at least not the case this time....

Congratulations on not panicing and stating it like it is. Clearly upgrading the internals of an iMac is not for the faint of heart, I plan on keeping your post if for no other reason to show others why a do-it-yourself on an iMac is a pretty foolish thing to undertake.
