Satellite X500-165 - Limitation of SSD life

Having just purchased a new X500-165 direct from Toshiba;
I have a question about the Solid State Disk Drive which is the main drive in this model laptop.
I understand these can have a limited read/write life.
I am using a software application that is directly connected to a stock exchange feed.
As a result is constantly being updated with live data of thousands of shareprice and news items.
So my question is do I need to worry that this will kill the SSD?
Would I be better of installing and running the application in the slower conventional backup drive instead?

Hello
Dont worry about this and just have fun with your notebook. Nobody can say how long a SSD or HDD will life but the same could happen with HDD too.
Thats also the reason why a backup should be done from time to time.
So I dont see a reason to install this software on another drive because SSD is much faster.

  • Satellite A100-165; while typing cursor jumps to other location

    Hi,
When i write with the keyboard sometimes the cursor jumps to another location,
Just right now it jumped to the "subject" input of the thread.
    It's pretty random where it jumps but very annoying, i am running a Toshiba satellite a100 165;
Anyone got any ideas what this could be?

    Hi
    I had the same issue
I didnt notice that I touched the touchpad surface accidently while typing.
This was the reason why the cursor jumped.
You can disable the touchpad using the key combination FN+F9
Furthermore the BIOS update would be advisable too.

  • Satellite M100-165 cannot shutdown - turns itself on after a few seconds

    Hello!
I have the same or very similar problem to those described in threads:
    Link: [http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=15325]
    Link: [http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=109125]
When I try to turn off my Satellite M100-165 ("Turn Off" in Windows or even by pressing the power button while I'm in BIOS) it turns on after a few seconds. It doesn't turn on when it works on batteries. It also doesn't turn on when I press the power button for 4 seconds.
I tried to recover system with recovery CD (Windows XP Home). I also tried it with Windows Vista. Still the same.
Actually I have BIOS version 2.90 (upgraded from version 1.90 as far as i can remember) but with earlier version the problem also existed.
I think that when I had BIOS version prior to 1.90 this problem didn't existed (but I can't remember number of that version).
    Thank's for all suggestions.

    Hello
It is very unusual issue and, for me, there is no some simply explanation. It will be interesting to know what Toshiba experts say about this. Make a call and let us know what they say.
The strange is that the same happen with two different operating systems. I cannot say for sure why this happen but your notebook is somehow confused and obviously change shutdown with restart. If this is result of BIOS update service people should know about this.

  • Satellite L870-165 does not work after being repaired by their service

Laptop Toshiba warranty does not work after being repaired by their service twice.
    Model: Satellite L870-165
Computer will not boot, stays with black screen stating: No bootable device-Please restart your system
After reboot still happening the same.
I called Toshiba phone incident and after trying several options I said take him to repair the service.
They first told me it was the hard drive, then phoned me to indicate that reinstalling and finally it was the motherboard, which supposedly changed. The day after being picked computer repair returned to give exactly the same error, only malfunctioned one evening.
After another call to 902 the Toshiba warranty service, I went back to take the service, this time I changed the hard drive. When I got home the computer did not start even once, again gives the same error.
I believe that this team comes with a factory default so that its solution is not easy because even the technical service told me that I did not know what else to do with it.

    >Computer will not boot, stays with black screen stating: No bootable device-Please restart your system
This message pops up because the notebook cannot find the Windows system.
There could be either an problem with the HDD or maybe the HDD is OK but the Windows system isnt preinstalled properly.
You said that the service agent changed the HDD. But did someone install the Windows system?
You can try to do it yourself take your recovery disk (hopefully you created such disk in the past) and boot from the recovery disk in order to install the system.
In case booting from the Disk would not be possible, go to BIOS (F2) and disable the secure boot and change from UEFI to CSM mode

  • Re: Instructions for opening a Satellite Z930 and upgrading the SSD

    Hi guys,
Just wondering if there is a service manual that would show me, or if anyone knows from experience, how to open a Satellite Z930 and upgrade the SSD. I know this will void my warranty but I don't care; Toshiba MobileCare won't have anything to do with it and I don't want to pay an arm and a leg for something I could do myself if I just knew how to remove the back cover!
I've removed all the bottom screws but the cover still won't come off...it seems to be stuck at the back-left corner. I'm guessing there's another screw under the keyboard or something...any help would be very much appreciated! :)

    > {quote:title=Macius wrote:}{quote}
    > Have you removed all 14 screws at the bottom cover?
Ah-hah! Now we're finally getting somewhere! All I can see is 13 screws...so where the heck is the 14th?! Please see [this photo|http://dl.dropbox.com/u/64884336/screws.jpg] to see what I mean :-)
    > {quote:title=Macius wrote:}{quote}
    > Be gently with the cover. Small mistake and some plastic holder can be broken.
That's why I'm asking you guys for a service manual or instructions LOL...I've modded many laptops before without really knowing anything about them, but just following instructions from those that do. It's not really rocket science; you just need to know where the screws are and in which order to take things apart!
However, when I removed the 13 screws that I could see on the bottom of my Z930, the cover came off easily in all areas except the back-left corner, so that's why I came on here as I know how delicate these things are and don't want to wreck it, especially since I'll have a voided warranty afterwards LOL! :P

  • Satellite L50-B-2C8 - new SSD is not recognized in BIOS settings

    Hello,
I just bought a new notebook Toshiba Satellite L50-B-2C8 and I also bought Samsung SSD 850 evo 250GB.
When I try to install the SSD drive instead my HDD the BIOS show "none" in Category SSD/HDD (BIOS not recognize the SSD).
    Please help me.
My bios version is : 2.00v
*** someone told me that I need to downgrade my BIOS version to 1.2v, and then the BIOS recognize the SSD drive, so maybe someone here can send me a download link to the 1.2 version of my model L50-B-2C8 .
    Thanks

From my point of few there is no reason why early BIOS version should recognize the SSD drive and the newest BIOS version doesnt
But BIOS v1.2 for Satellite L50-B-2C8 PSKTQE series does not exists the v2.0 (at this time) is the latest version and older BIOS versions are not available for this series.
Furthermore I guess you will need slimply check different SSD drive it could be possible that other SSD drive would be recongized properly.
By the way: Im owner of Evo 850 SSD drive and as far as I can remember I had to update the SSD drive firmware to use it properly in connection with my other notebook (not Toshiba unit)
    problem solved tnx

  • Satellite P855-S5312 - limiter effect on speakers?

There seems to be some sort of limiter effect with audio coming from speakers. In other words, if volume is at say 100,  quiet audio will be amplified but if a loud sound comes, it seems to be compressed compared to the other audio. Its a bit like a compressor used in music production. This doesn't affect audio output from headphones just the laptop speakers. It's not an intense change, but a noticibly annoying one i'd like to remove.

Hi! I doubt if this is what your looking for, but is all I can come up with for now. Better replies may come latter.

  • Re: Want to get rid of Toshiba Softwares pre-installed on Satellite L650-165

    Hi,
i just bought my Satellite Pro L650-165 and there are a number of softwares that come pre-installed with it.
Such as Toshiba Tempro, Eco Mode, Bulliten Board etc etc.
Considering the fact that i will be using this for my university i will be running numerous ram intensive programs on it.
So i want to free up all the ram i can by uninstalling all these utlities.
I know what you are thinkin... yes just because they are installed doesnt mean they are running. But is it safe to?
I know it should be but still asking. i just want to be left with plain ol windows7 minus all the 'cool softwares'. any precautions?
oh and although i have created the recovery discs using the builtin utility to do so.. i was thinking of ordering one from toshiba too. where to go for that?

    >So i want to free up all the ram i can by uninstalling all these utlities.
I know what you are thinkin... yes just because they are installed doesnt mean they are running. But is it safe to?
Even if such tools are installed, this does not mean that they would run in the background and would waste a part of the RAM.
I would not recommend uninstalling such tools but to disable it from automatic startup.
    How to do that? Esay
You can do this in msconfig.
Start msconfig and go to start up tab.
There you can just uncheck the tools which you dont need at the beginning.
Save the changes and reboot the unit.
If you would need one of the disabled tools again in startup tab, then you could enable this
Note; disabling the process in msconfig does not mean that you could not start these tools manually
Disabling the tools (processes) in msconfig means ONLY that these tool would not be started automatically when the windows boots up.

  • Re: Satellite L650 PSK1JA: cannot play 2nd Life due to old GPU driver

    Hi,
i have a windows 7, Toshiba Satellite L650 PSK1JA-0K4017, video card is ATI mobility Radeon HD5650 and Im unable to use second life ( everything in the worlds is a pink colour) and its unusable because i need an updated display driver
I have tried the AMD website and am unable to install their drivers as they say they are not compatible and i need to obtain my driver from the manufacturer (toshiba)
Trouble is that Toshiba display driver is very outdated 15/03/2010
When are they ever going to update this particular driver and if not does anyone know of a workaround for this issue.
Why is the driver so old.?? If i cant fix this issue i'll be purchasing a new laptop and it definitely wont be a Toshiba again. Useless if they never update their drivers.

I think you have to understand that the L650 is a 2010 / early 2011 model - support would have been offered through the product life cycle and for some time afterwards. Most vendors will issue updated drivers where it solves a problem NOT just because to component manufacturer has "tweaked" it and made it version 2.1.1.1.1 rather than 2.1.1.1.0 ie "why fix something that isnt broken" which can make new issues
In saying that i have updated AMD drivers using the AMD reference drivers many times on Toshiba's where the Official Toshiba driver is outdated and have not had an issue, even if there was one you just boot into safe made and reinstall teh original driver - either the one the one the unit shipped with in the TOSAPINS folder or download the last Official update from Toshiba prior to trying the AMD sources driver.
Or sometimes you can download the latest AMD Catalyst Control software from Toshiba - just choose a newer model ie L50D - this gives you the option of either unpacking the driver to a Temp location where you can manually install OR automatic install - automatic install may check the model and fail so you may need to manually install as per previous post.
just bear in mind Toshiba has one of the best reliability scores in the industry - choosing another brand due to 3+ year old unit not having Official current drivers is totally your decision, and buying a brand that is more likely to have a major fault within 3 years is a choice you are welcome to make - from my eperience the choice is easy :)

  • Z930 SSD Life.. Less than year and a half!

    Dear Forum members,
I confess that yesterday I was so shocked I couldn't even think of a way to drain the stress!!!.. I'm glad today I found this forum to seek help!.
In July 2012 I dediced to splurge 3 grand with super high expectations for my Portege Z930 PT235U-02201T
    (i7, 8Gigs, 128GB SSD, WIN 7 Ultimate)
To be honest, I was glad I made the investment because it was the lightest, fastest and more stable laptop I ever owned!
Well, that was until yesterday.. When I got a BSD, then a reboot, an then she tried to boot from Network (I was immediately shocked because I knew Network boot was the last in the BIOS boot order).
My worries were confirmed when I entered BIOS and couldn't find the SSD!!
Now the part to blame myself, I had TWO FULL MONTHS without a backup! (Yeah I know, shame on me).. But I know it was partially due to the added sense of security of this being my first SSD and you know.. No moving parts and so on..
The point is I am completely dissapointed for the little more than a year life of the SSD.. Is that what I should expect?? (**bleep**! my family have 8 yrs old laptops still running the original HDD's)
Let alone the fact that I am still in state of denial of the invaluable information I've probably lost! (Ok, I know that I have a big chunk of Responsibility for that part. But I'm quite sure you understand me).
The BIOS was up to date (I'm always careful with that).
I really appreciate your guidance on this... I am currently living outside the U.S., but this stuff happening is enough to justify going there to send the machine to the official service ( I did not purchase extended warranty, and I don't trust the service in the country I'm right now, you can trust me on that).
Do you thing in your experience that there's at least a little possibilty that the SSD could be "debricked" ? (by he official service) or should I save the big bucks of travelling back to the U.S. and stop the state of Denial an accept my information is already lost?.. And just get a new SSD and move on.
Or should before all try to remove-reinsert the SSD (I have enough experience to do the task).
    Thank You!

If the data are valuable enough, you might want to contact a rescue company like these. I'd guess the chances are good, but they are expensive.

  • SSD Life Span

Are the SSD's supplied in Apple iMacs produced in early 2012 expected to have a shorter life span than standard mechanical HD's?  If so, can anything be done to extend their effective lives?

No one knows at this point. SSDs have come a long way and I personally expect them to last longer then the mechanical spinning HDDs.
I guess the only way to tell is to setup 10+ SSDs and 10+ Spinning HDD and then Read and Write data from/to them over and over for days, years until they start to fail. Then do a statistical analysis of the time it took all drives to fail.

    Hi
I hope that your unit has factory settings and the LAN card is installed and listed properly in device manager. Please check as first if the card is also enabled and configured properly.
Try also to talk with network administrator in your company. He can check all settings and be sure that everything is ok.

  • Satellite Pro 4360 - Booting from SSD via Cardbus (PCMCIA) possible?

    Hi all,
I have an old SP 4360.
Does anyone know if a BIOS upgrade to 2.70 will allow me booting off a SSD inserted into the Cardbus pc card slot?
Right know the Bios only recognizes DVD, HDD and FLOPPY as boot devices.
    Second issue:
I have confllicting info about max. RAM size. Some sources say 320mb max while the (online) manual states 576mb max. Someone know if 576mb is really supported?

    Hi
    Please check this threads:
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=82016
Please note that memory upgrade depends on the notebooks chipset.
You can check the chipset of the Sat Pro 4360 notebook and could search for details on the Intel page (I assume its Intel chipset).
    Regarding booting from SSD;
I doubt a BIOS update would allows booting from external SSD usually such old notebook were able to boot from CD, HDD or FDD only
