Saturation Differences in LR

I just discovered yesterday that the adjustment brush in 100% saturation mode affects an image differently than using the saturation control alone:
Case 1: All adjustments default, Adjustment brush, custom mode, saturation 100, everything else 0
Case 2: All adjustments default, Saturation slider 100
The two result in different looking images. Could anyone explain why this is the case? With the specified adjustment brush settings, I would have expected it to behave just as the adjustment slider.
Thanks!

Well, the flow and density are both 100%. I just thought it was interesting, and wondered if any wizards knew what was going on behind the scenes. I typically never use the brush at 100% saturation (I rarely use it in color mode in general), so that is why I just discovered this yesterday (been using LR since 1.0).

  • Apples to apples - how can I make sense of DNGPE's color readouts?

The simple version of this question is "how do I convert a DNG file such that Photoshop's HSV (and CIELAB) readouts agree with DNGPE's?"  Put another way, I want to have the same DNG image open in Photoshop and DNGPE, and have both applications agree on the color numbers for a particular chart patch.
It seems like using ACR to convert an image into ProPhotoRGB would get me close, at least in the hue and sat dimensions, but that isn't the case in practice.
Worse yet, the L*a*b* numbers disagree, and as far as I understand, they shouldn't.  The closest I've been able to get is using dcraw on the command line to spit out linear 16-bit TIFFs in ProPhotoRGB, but it's still not exact, and it strikes me as weird that I'd get closer with an open-source tool than Camera Raw.
I'd like to just derive my list of HSV vectors from Photoshop and plug that list into a DNGPE recipe (rather than hand-tweaking color patches using the DNGPE GUI), but if I can't get Photoshop and DNGPE to agree on the source color, this becomes impossible, as I'd be comparing apples to oranges.
Also, it's my understanding that the DNG Profile HueSatMaps are based on HSV, but DNGPE seems to specify its list of corrections as HSL... is that correct?  Any particular reason that the corrections are a list of HSL vectors that are later translated into HSV for the profile?
    Thanks in advance!

Following up to myself here - I was able to get Camera Raw to convert an image such that the L*a*b* numbers matched DNGPE, but Hue and Sat are still off.  What I WAS doing previously, to no avail, was converting in Camera Raw using the same BASE profile I had selected in DNGPE.  I thought that since I hadn't made any corrections or changes in DNGPE, it would only be applying the base profile, and the images should match.
To fix that, I used DNGPE to export a new profile (again, with no actual edits made), and converted using the exported profile.  Now Photoshop and DNGPE agree about the L*a*b* figures at least, though they still disagree about hue / sat.  DNGPE consistently reports hue numbers about 6º-10º higher than Photoshop, and saturation numbers that are 50-100% higher.  Saturation difference, I suspect, are from comparing HSB in Photoshop to HSL in DNGPE.  Not sure what would be causing the hue inaccuracy.  The RGB numbers differ wildly, too, so this is probably a color management issue.
Duplicating DNGPE's color management to obtain identical Hue and Sat figures in another application is now the problem.  Put as simply as possible - "Where does DNGPE get it's hue / sat figures?"

  • Color Profile issues / Colors darken when saving as png/jpg

    Hello Adobe Community!
I got a problem with the color settings / profiles in Photoshop and I hope someone can help me.
For the record: I Am working an a PC (Windows 7) with Photoshop CS4.
I work on a digital painting in Photoshop and to keep track of my progression I save frequently as pngs.
I noticed that the colors don't match and are much darker as you can see in the picture below:
I tried the things suggested in many forums, checking and converting my color profiles. For many that seemed to fix it, but not for me.
In the source space you can see the Profile I am using.
Many suggested when saving for web and devices one should untick the "convert to sRGB" checkbox, but for me, that didn't change anything and the colors were still messed up.
I hope someone has a solution for this problem. After trying so many things I'm getting quite desperate!

always CONVERT to sRGB (if not already there) when saving for the web and unmanages apps
there are both pros and cons for tagging/untagging images for the web
the slight darkening and saturation difference i see in in your posted image is expected between managed and unmanaged apps, but you didn't embed a profile so it is my guess what you are seeing there
to duplicate the phenomenon, in Photoshop, open your tagged sRGB image, then
View> Proof Setup: Monitor RGB (be sure to turn it back off)
the shift you see there is the difference between sRGB and your monitor profile (Photoshop is in essence stripping the sRGB profile and sending the RGB numbers straight through to the monitor with no changes)
as you probably know, Photoshop normally transforms (changes) the source colors to the monitor profile...

  • Ramon or Chris Cox or G Ballard - CM ?

A few days ago I posted about something strange happening when posting images online. Let me clarify some things and the problem and see if anyone has some opinions as to what is going on.
I have a Macbook Pro 17" first gen. I am using CS4 and Bridge 3.0.0.464. I am using an Apple Cinema Display 23" matte.
I have my CS4 Color Settings to North American PrePress 2 and have those synced with Bridge.
I am using FireFox with CM and found out that Safari 4 has CM. (I don't use Safari too often and the other day didn't realize that it was CM capable).
If I open an image in PS or Bridge, either one I have taken or created or even really good test images downloaded from the net, the problem is the same, and as follows:
The images will look exactly alike in FF or Safari but they will be more saturated than PS or Bridge. So all the edits on thousands of photos are now questionable depending on what's right, Safari and FF or PS and Bridge. The latter showing less saturation which is what I am correcting all my images on. So I do not know if FF and Safari are just showing more saturation, of if Bridge and PS4 are showing less and that my images are now more saturated when viewing somewhere else.
I can even view jpgs or pngs or anything and see the saturation difference.
I use a Mocaco XR Optix Pro with the latest version of ColorEyes. I can calibrate and recalibrate and nothing changes. The images will look slightly more saturated in FF and Safari over Bridge and PS4.
I have been in Alaska and not online so have been editing all these images then decided to upload a few the other day, and now I find they are not matching what I view in PS. Hum.
Any ideas or where to start looking for the problem and solution?
    Thank you.
    Randal
    ps-
By the way, yes, these are tagged images that I am viewing. Either created by me or downloaded on the net with ICC profiles.

    UPDATE:
Well, when using this Macbook Pro, I have noticed that my ACD will look slightly washed out after using it for a few hours or sometimes after ten minutes or sometimes after just starting it up. But re-calibrating didn't seem to help. So I tried everything till I finally found something that seems to work when this happens...
I hot unplug the monitor from the notebook and then plug it back in and low and behold, the images in Photoshop and Bridge now look exactly like the images in FF and Safari look.
I kept thinking the ICC profiles were corrupting but couldn't rebuild them. I have had both the LCD screen and the main board on this notebook replaced after buying it new. Not a refurbished but brand new unit.
So I am updating this question here in case anyone else has similar problems. I set up a wallpaper that I can see and tell when the ACD starts to look slightly washed. I cannot explain why when this happens that FF and Safari are not affected by this but PS and Bridge are. But when I get the desktop image to look correct again, then also the images in PS and Bridge will match the images in Safari and FF.
Talk about frustrating. Nothing made sense. Nor did I think there was a fix. But there is, to unhook the monitor and reconnect it. Which still makes no sense. But hey, it works.
On a further note, I also notice I cannot find the place to disable the side buttons for the ACD right now. So it almost makes me wonder if there is a problem with the OS knowing what monitor (and maybe ICC profile) it is using. I have searched Google and found others could no longer find where to disable the side buttons of the ACD but could not find an answer as to what to do when that option is gone from Display Prefs. I have no idea.
But it goes to show that it is a hardware or APPLE issue yet again.

  • How should I make sense of ExportPDF data?

I'm using Adobe Livecycle GeneratePDFService and calling the ExportPDF method. I'm sending the method a system generated PDF and looking to retrieve the data in a way that I can progammatically parse out specific pieces of information and use them in a C# WCF Service. I can successfully hit the Adobe service and return various formats. So far I've analyzed the HTML32 and XML10 formats. Unfortunately, I can't make much sense of the data because there doesn't seem to be many indicators of placement on the page or within tables / line items. Here is an example of a challenge that I'm looking to overcome.
Here is an image from the income section of an IRS Form 1040.
The ExportPDF exports the below as format HTML32. As you can see there is no way to relate a row of the table with any of the dollar values. XML10 isn't much better.

  • Is there a difference between vibrance and saturation mask? how can i create it?

    Hi
browsing the forum and the net , i found only 2 ways to create a saturation mask
    1) using an adjustament layer , selective color
    2) using the photoshop plugin
but i have never achieved good results
now reading and browsing the net i found the vibrance mask ->http://goodlight.us/writing/saturationmasks/using-the-photoshop-actions.html
now is there a difference between vibrance mask and saturation mask?
and may i know how do you create a saturation mask or vibrance mask?
    thanks
    happy new year

    hi
i tried to reproduce your skill
    1) duplicate my image and coverted in lab
    2) back to my original image in RGB
    3) i create 4 layer 18% gray , blend mode normal
    now on layer 1 apply
    second layer
    3 layer
    4 layer
    now my laywer are so...->
    4) add a curve clippet on each layer ,input set 127
    and
and set all the 4 to screen
    5) a level adjusament set to auto
but my image is in color not like yours
    what wrong?
    whad do i miss?

  • Difference Between Chroma and Saturation?

Can anyone explain the difference between chroma and saturation?
Also, how could I change the chroma of a color in Photoshop?
    Thanks!

    c,
You may have a look here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colorfulness
A search in the Photoshop Helpfile will show whether there is a real distinction (in later versions) between the two, and whether it is possible to work with chroma as opposed to saturation.

  • Saturation and contrast differences

I need to understand this...someone help please! How come I have to stretch my adjustments to ridiculous amounts (I do mean to the max) in Aperture in order for them to show up (sometimes barely show up at all!!) in the browsers? I can't even judge their appearance properly while looking at the photographs in Aperture. I am exporting "versions" and have selected the version itself to be exported. It seems almost not worth the while to do any adjustments in Aperture and to simply throw all pics in PS.
    Is this normal?
    MBP   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    hello, marie in china
quote: "I can see the changes/adjustments perfectly in Aperture and usually tweak the images to my taste rather quickly, but the adjustments seem to go out the window when the version is exported and put into a browser."
so, if I understand you correctly, the photos you are seeing in a browser like Safari or Omniweb or Firefox etc look different than what you see in Aperture?
this is ok. to fix this set your export Image Quality higher and to the correct ColorSync Profile. do a few exports to your desktop until the photograph is the way you want it and then upload the jpeg to the site.
File>Export>Export version or shift apple e
Export preset: select JPEG and Edit...select appropriate settings
    OR,
do you mean that the Aperture browser photographs look different than what you see in the Viewer?

  • Data come from difference data source

In my saturation, my program's data are come from difference data source. For example, the program will retrieve PO balance, material consumption, future consumption and so on. In my program logic, i retrieve all of the material number, the retrieve the PO balance, material consumption... into internal table, then loop the internal table of material number and update this table from internal table of po balance, material consumption..., but i found that the program's running time is long. How to improve the performance or any suggestion for the program logic. Thanks.

    Hi,
    Few Guildlines:
    1. program is slow mainly because Database load is too high,  try to reduce it and that load can be shared by ABAP. gotrhough SE30-perfromance tuning.
Also, in Se30 u will get all most important Tips and tricks, follow it,...
    2. Try to find out summary table and dont try always to get data from basic tables.
    3. Try to use perfect SELECT statemetn with porper joins, which is most important in reduction of load on DB.
    4. you can make ABAP part faster, following coding standard like use of Binary search.
    5. Use SLIN to find out which part of program is taking too much time, try to reduce it.
    Hope this will guide u.

  • JPEG Export Looks Saturated in Internet Explorer

I see this question in many forums and online but without a solution.
JPEG exports (sRBG) look overly saturated when viewed in Internet Explorer browser, including when uploading/viewing in Facebook, etc, etc.  In other words, the colors looks different between Lightroom and Internet Explorer.  (Colors looks the same between Lightroom and Photoshop though.)
As point of reference, when you download a sample JPEG image from Canon EOS's website (used to show sample images from their cameras) you see that those images also use sRGB profile.  They also look exactly the same no matter how you view them (Lightroom, Photoshop, Internet Explorer, Safari, etc.).
What is Lightroom doing to photos upon export to JPEG and you need Lightroom or Photoshop to see the same colors?
I saw some talk about it had to do with Lightroom presets and that you had to zero those out?  Any ideas from Windows users?

Have you got Firefox or Safari on your machine?  In which case, how do the images look in either of those browsers?  Or, if you're using Windows 7, how do the images look in Windows photo viewer?
Also, can you say what monitor you are using please?
I think it might be a colour management issue.  Internet Explorer is not colour managed (not even IE9), Lightroom and Photoshop are colour managed, so is Windows 7 photo viewer (but not the XP equivalent), so are Firefox and Safari (but not Chrome).  When there's a difference between how something looks in an non-colour-managed program and colour-manged programs then it's worth checking for colour management issues.
If your monitor has a wider gamut than sRGB, then you would expect IE9 and other non-managed programs to look over-saturated.

  • PS CS6 - How do I get colour picker to show the colour difference between new & current in the colour preview box?

In previous versions, I would click the on the colour selection boxes (tool bar) and the colour difference would show in the Colour Picker box. The selected colour (new or current) would show. The target circle would physically move around.  Now all the colour number change, but the colour target doesn't move.  I used to colour correct items by checking how close using the colour picker and rapidly switching back & forth.  Now I can't do that. Help!

In a nutshell, you have to simplify the frame layer and erase the interior.
    Here are the steps:
    Create your background.
    Add a new layer:
Drag the frame you want to use onto the editing surface.  The frame will come in on its own layer:
    Simplify that frame layer:
Choose the Magic Wand Tool and give it these settings:
Click on the interior gray area of the frame with the Magic Wand to select it, and hit your Delete key:
Switch to the Eraser Tool and erase the stuff that's left in the middle:
Select the empty layer (Layer 1 in this example) and use File...Place to place your image on it.  The layer name will change to the name of the image.  Adjust the size and placement of the image.  Your layers will now look like this:
With the frame layer selected, add a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer, making sure to "clip" it to the frame layer.  Adjust the sliders to suit:
    The final result:

  • Colour- strange difference between Lightroom and all other programs/windows

    Hello everyone,
I have a strange problem with the colours in Lr. In the program everything looks good, the colours are the ones that i want to achieve, but when i export the pictures as jpeg (srgb), the tumbnails of these pictures seem to be fine (same colours as in Lr). However, when i open the jpeg (eg in picture viewer or in photoshop) all of the colours are different than the ones in Lr or the tumbnails. On a different computer, the jpegs have the same problem.
Any idea how to resolve this problem? Can I change the colour management of Lr itself (not the external editors)?
    Thanx@

    OK.
From LR in Develop module I press cmd e to create a TIFF to edit in PS CS3. Edit with LR adjustments is selected. After a while the TIFF appears beside the CR2 Canon 5d raw file.
Still in LR flick between the two and the difference is readily apparent. I notice that all the tiff presets are at 0 i.e. in the develop module as I would expect them to be. But the TIFF image looks sharper and in areas of detail less saturated. I think the decrease in saturation is more a side effect of sharpening.
The new TIFF opened in PS looks exactly the same as the TIFF in LR. But both are different from the raw file they were created from as seen from the LR develop module.
In LR I have applied some masking and a moderate amount of sharpening to the CR2 raw file. I do note that applying sharpening in LR does not seem to change anything except the 1:1 and higher mags unless the sharpening is extreme. In other words I think the imnage as displayed at lower magnifications e.g. Fit to screen is not a realistic representation of the overall effect of sharpening, even when rendered on a large monitor (30") wide gamut monitor. If I am right this is a significant problem. I note that BibblePro perviews reflect the effect of sharpening on the overall image more accurately. (So it is possible.)
(FWIW: My preview settings in LR are quality high, 2048 pixels.)
EDIT: Yes I am correct, the images look the same at 1:1 but not at lower magnification. So guess the LR preview rendering machine does not quite match the preview rendered from the newly created TIFF.
Still knowing this does not help, it just means what I see on the screen in LR at lower magnification than 1:1 is not accurate.

  • Classic tween saturation property not animating like in total training video

John Ulliman uses actionScript3 with Flash CS3 and I have Flash CS5 which is the main difference. It appears he uses a classic tween (from CS4 and CS5's perspective).
I have a thumbnail which is created as a movie symbol and when I double click on the timeline I have a tween of zero saturation (frame 1) to 100% saturation (frame 10) back to zero saturation frame 20. When I scrub the timeline the classic tween fades up and down correctly. But when I trigger the rollover (and rollout) event from the main timeline which should goto the movie instance called mThumb0.gotoAndPlay(2) starting at frame 2 for ROLL_OVER and Thumb0.gotoAndPlay(11) for the ROLL_OUT event it seems to only change the saturation a little but not touch the saturation filter.
I don't know if there is something about the different tweens (Classic and Motion) that I need to know. I don't know what the sync checkmark does but I tried it on and off with no help. I put trace statements that indicate the ROLL_OVER and ROLL_OUT events are being triggered and the functions the events trigger are being called correctly but I don't know how to debug what is happening with the timeline after the mThumb0.gotoAndPlay occurs.
Thanks for any help on this.
       Dave V.

Correction - I meant it only changes the CONTRAST a little but NOT the SATURATION. When I double click the thumbnail to reveal the movie clip symbol timeline I can scrub the playhead in the timeline and it functions correctly but when I trigger playing of that timeline with actionscript 3 it only changes the CONTRAST property but not the SATURATION property.

  • Process version 2010 to 2012 update differences...why?

I am a retired computer professional and I have used LR since V3 first came out and have recently updated my photos from process version 2010 to PV2012.  I used the batch process as I have ~200 GB of photos. My batch process is as follows:
In the Library module, I clicked on > Library> select Show Photos in Subfolders. I then selected the Develop module, opened a folder and selected the first photo and manually clicked on the ! icon to Update to Current Process (2012).  I then added all the photos in the filmstrip to my selection.  I then clicked on Sync button to open the Synchronize Settings dialog and clicked on Check None and then check marked only Process Version and clicked on Synchronize.
I noticed that the batch process zeroed out all my settings in the Develop module Basic dialog.  I no longer have my previous 2010 settings listed for the photo and in some cases it looks like some of the images have defaulted to an unprocessed state (under or overexposed, lack of color saturation).  If  I select a photo in the Develop module and go History and select the setting just prior to the "Synchronize Settings"  to render it back to PV2010 and click on the image ! icon to update just that one photo, I get a totally different result.  I retain the previous settings in the Basic tab and only the new LR4 tool settings are changed.and the History then states "Update to Current Process (2012)".
    1.  Why the different labeled result in History for the two processes?
    2.  Why are completely different results achieved in Develop module between the batch vs the manual update processes?
    3.  Have the photos really been updated from process version 2010 to PV2012 using the batch process listed above?  As far as I know, I did the batch process correctly, as I even double checked online prior to processing in batch.
    4.  Can the images be "batched" back to PV2010?   Would they change the photos that have been added since acquiring LR4 that are in PV2012?  I can load last weeks backup PV2010 LR4 catalog, but I have added new photos since then and it would be a hassle to process them over again.
I am NOT happy with the results of my process update due to the loss of  Develop Module Basic settings and in the completely different results achieved between the batch vs the manual update processes.  I would like to keep my old settings that are not impacted by the PV2012 change and now they are gone in my current catalog.
Adobe, is this a BUG or a FEATURE?

In my opinion: not a good idea to convert old photos en-batch.
Recommend: convert (hand-selected photos) one at a time, or just use PV2012 on new photos.
There are more than one reason:
    * As you know, process conversion yields very different results (if photo has been substantially edited).
    * It takes some time to polish your PV2012 editing skills.
    * Often when you are comparing PV2012 results to previous PV2010 results (which you've become familiar with, and like...), you may interpret differences in a more negative light, than if you were using PV2012 without comparing to a previous PV2010 version.
This last one can not be over-stated. Numerous times I have converted and been disappointed, at least initially. Recovered highlights can seem like loss of contrast. Detail in shadows can be distracting after initial conversion, until you step back for a while, then re-look at it...
Also, the process version itself (results I mean) takes some getting used to (even when not comparing to a previous legacy-pv edit). e.g. if you've become attached to the over-saturated shadows in previous process version, the shadows seem under-saturated in PV2012, etc...

  • Over saturated Images in Safari

I'm experiencing an issue where Safari shows images optimised for the web in a very over saturated form.
It is really driving me mad!
My MackBook Pro and 23" apple LCD are both colour calibrated using the Spyder2Pro colouromitor. I use those profiles for the screens and the colours are great.
    Here's my workflow:
    - My camera is set to use Adobe RGB 1998 icc profile
    - I take images in RAW format and import them into Aperture (ver 1.5).
    - When I have made any adjustments I export them from Apertue into jpeg format
    - I have set-up Aperture to use the sRGB colour space when exporting images into jpeg format from Aperture (the images will mainly be used for the web which is why I use sRGB)
    - I open the images using Photoshop and use the 'optimise for web' feature to keep the file size low
    - I select the option that says 'embed icc profile'
    - Photoshop then embeds the sRGB icc profile in the image
If I look at the image, it looks just fine in Photoshop or any other image viewing program. If I then open it in Safari it looks way over sturated.
I have tried everything and I just can't work it out.
I've even tried setting my monitor colour space to that of sRGB to see if it makes any difference, and it doesn't.
However, if I choose NOT to embedd the icc profile in the image, then Safari opens the image and it looks just like the jpeg when I view it within Photohop or any other image veiwer.
I can view the images using Internet Explorer on a Windows PC and they appear to be fine. I guess thats because IE ignores colour profiles where Safari will use them if they exist.
It seems Safari is reading the colour profile incorrectly in the image.
Can anyone tell me whats going on?

    Hi
I can sympathise with how annoying this must be - and although I haven't looked into it myself, I do recall several other posts over the last 18months or so, with the same issue.
I can't dig out the exact posts now, but maybe the following might lead somewhere?
    http://webkit.org/blog/73/color-spaces/
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302827
    http://www.gballard.net/psd/golive_pageprofile/embeddedJPEGprofiles.html
sorry I can't locate the threads I remember- I found one or two, but they were un-answered.
