Hi
I run a website that runs a stats package that only shows up as a webpage and I want save the results as a pdf for distribution.
Has anyone a solution to the problem of saving a webpage as a PDF from Safari.??
Did a quick Google search but no definitive solutions found.
Running OSx 10.10.1, Safari 8.0.2
Newbie to Mac and my first question hope someone can help.

File>Print. At the bottom of the Print dialog box, pull down the dropdown labeled "PDF". Save it as a PDF file.

Currently FormsCentral does not support to View/Save/Print Embedded Form from the Webpage to PDF. If you are the form author, you can save/print the form to PDF in FormsCentral, and the PDF forms can be viewed in Acrobat or Reader.Or if you like, you can save/print the entire web page to PDF using the browser, but the form could not be submitted then. Look for these two files.
AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin
AdobePDFViewer.plugin
Right click those and select “Move To Trash’.

This is the title of an apple forum question, and it is a bug in both Safari 5.1.3 and under, and I find it to also occur in Firefox browser (at least 9.* 10.*, 11.0), running on Lion OS (10.7.2, 10.7.3). See:

Under the newer Mac OS mentioned, and Firefox 10.2, 11.0, 9.*, if I select:
File -> Print -> PDF -> Open PDF in Preview"
(and view / save the PDF in Preview, you will see none of the links in the original web page are active
or using
File -> Print -> PDF -> Save as PDF...
same problem. Try this using any Wikipedia page, for example.
When this problem was posed in Apple forums, by a user of the Safari browser, it was found to be a bug (since Aug 2011) fixed in a Safari browser build 5.1.4 circa Jan 2012. I tried the newer Safari browser and sure enough the problem went away (except that links embedded in the PDF no longer appeared as blue text - ARGH - but "hover over" with the cursor showed the link and clicking the link in Preview viewer activated the link in a browser window).
So I post this to the Mozilla community, please fix this 'cause I don't want to have to switch over to Safari browser every time I want to archive a PDF with active links!!!!
P.S. I did a spot-check and with the newer add-on Enjoy Reading 1.0.1 and FF11.0. When the Enjoy reading formatted version appears in the browser window, all URLs/links are preserved and highlighted in blue, but when I print that browser window as PDF, the links are dead (don't work) even though they appear in blue in the PDF.
So, what's going on, can the Safari fix be researched and applied to FF?
Also, on some forums, people are responding, Well, try installing Acrobat reader. Well, I don't want to, Preview reader has worked fine for me for years.

I cannot say I agree. I could email you a PDF clipping or two (generated from Safari on Mac OS, in its native capability with no add-ons) that shows you otherwise. When I used PC platforms I did have to install PDF converters (tried both free and expensive ones) that did what I describe.
I cannot try the add-on you mention, '''Print Pages to Pdf.''' in Firefox. It shows in my browser and Mac OS platform "Not available for your platform." So I am guessing it was written for the PC version of Firefox.
The Mac OS has had a native PDF-creation functionality for as many years as I have been using it; I used PC prior to that, Win3.1 through XP and NT. And on my PC, I bought (and at work, my employer bought $$$, I had to justify three levels up to management the ability to create PDFs on my work PC) some Adobe functionality to CREATE pdf's (readin's free and easy, makin' em's costly on the PC).
I've gone and dug through some of my (Mac) doc and clipping archives, and I find that stuff I created after about Dec 2008 or so seems to eliminate all link functionality. When viewed in the Apple native "Preview" application (sort of Apple's equivalent to Adobe Acrobat reader, ships with the OS): link tags are highlighted/tinted, clicking a link opens a (default) browser and takes you there; hover-over the tag text shows the actual link. (Of course, not all old links are still VALID or point to the desired source.)
I could, in Safari or FF browser window and with no add-ons or Adobe paid products whatsoever, use the native OS method to create PDF's from any application (word processor, spreadsheet, browser, etc) via the menu File -> Print -> Save as PDF menu and create a PDF that had active hyperlinks. In Apple OS Lion 10.7.3, I still can't when it uses this broken WebKit interface, links are "dead" as a doornail until a fix is distributed in WebKit for a future Lion release. It seems this functionality died at least as far back as Leopard OS 10.6.8, but don't quote me on that. Also, my version of Pages 2009 version 4.1(923) (sorta like Word) STILL creates a PDF document that preserves (1) text hyper-links within the document, and (2) web links (in the PDF) that open the browser. I just made a test document.
When all you can see in the PDF is the tag text, there is nothing to copy-paste to follow any link. Also, hypertext links are often used by authors to create links to other points in a document: now even *that* is broken in the PDF version of the documents I retrieve from the web and print from FireFox (Broken in Safari 5.1.3 and earlier but fixed in 5.1.4).
Try this on the PC, in your browser and print a news clipping as PDF, do the links in the PDF work? What products do this, and what don't? I would bet the machine with a full Adobe suite this will work flawlessly. (Why should a PC user have to pay hundreds of $ to create this functionality in what I thought was an open standard (PDF)? But that's talkin' religion, let's not start that.)
Some folks might say,
go online and find the original source doc in your browser. Or,
go and add those links manually using the Preview edit add-link capability (hunh? no thanks) , or
save each item worth saving as an HTML archive instead of a PDF (argh, creating a whole directory in the process, I might add, including ads). Or,
who needs PDFs, everything is online.
Or, buy some Adobe product.
I think they miss my point. This is a real strange dumbing-down of archival PDF documents, or at least a destruction of the ability to use PDF as an archive that retains its links and references.
C.F. the guy who has archives of scientific papers, and the old material all cross-references nicely but after date X there are no working links.

I tried your suggestion, not knowing that the direct pdf printer would also "save as" PDF, but when I try your suggestion and use the Adobe PDF printer that is a direct creation of the PDF from the browser (IE9), instead of the "black out" areas I get when I use the "Convert to" button, I get missing blocks of the resulting PDF, and only get the first 1/4 to 1/3 of the webpage.
Just to clarify, when I said I print the webpage and then scan, that is a work around I have to do if I need a scanned version of the way a webpage appears on a particular date and time, instead of the one step process I used to be able to do when Adobe Acrobat would actually convert the webpage to a pdf without blackout areas or, if I try your suggestion, blank spots with a partial webpage. But the idea was one I had not thought of and I appreciated the thought.

is there any way to save webpages as pdf in firefox without using addon because no addon creates pdf in good quality(even print pages to pdf).

I am not aware of any way to do that natively (without an addon) in Firefox.
Although I do not do it very often, [https://addons.mozilla.org/En-us/firefox/addon/print-pages-to-pdf/ Print pages to Pdf] is a useful addon, if you want to capture important details from a page and store it as a *.pdf file (as a booking receipt for example).
I appreciate that on some occasions, some display elements may not port across, but please appreciate that many web pages are not designed to be printed out on paper, let alone a *.pdf file.

Disabling Safari 2.0 PDF viewing PLEASE!!

Hi everyone. I'm running Safari 2.0 under Tiger. Often, I access documents as PDF files. I need these to be accessible and saved on my desktop, as Acrobat (not Preview) files. Safari opens these automatically. I used to be able to save them by printing the page to a PDF file, but now when Safari opens a PDF file, the "print to PDF" option is greyed out.
I like Safari, but this feature is driving me bonkers and unless I can disable it and have the PDF file downloaded to my desktop for use by the application of my choice, I shall have no alternative but to change my default browser (to Camino most likely).

I used to be able to save them by printing the page to a PDF file, but now when Safari opens a PDF file, the "print to PDF" option is greyed out.
Have you tried pressing command+s instead?

I tried the two responses that said to delete some plugins to get Safari to let PDFs go to Finder so they could be downloaded. Didn't work for me. I'm guessing I accidentally changed something in Safari (Security?) that prevents the switchover; I don't get the four icons at the bottom of the screen for certain documents (Including the one inviting a download PDF to Finder), while it works for others. So I have to request paper copies of some forms to be snailmailed to me, rather than emailed. Any suggestions?

The four buttons only appear if you are viewing a PDF file in Safari (the page URL in the toolbar at the top of the Safari window must end in ".pdf"). If you see a URL link in a browser page, you can right or control click on it & select one of the "Save linked file …" items from the popup menu instead of opening it in Safari.
If your problem is that some plugin is opening PDF links in something other than Safari, check your installed plugins. You can do that by clicking on the "Help" item in Safari's menu & choosing "Installed Plug-ins." Use Safari's Find feature to look for "pdf" in the list. If you see something besides for the "WebKit Built-in PDF" you may have to launch the associated application & change its preferences for opening PDF's.

I had been saving as a PDF and then reducing the size of the PDF by printing it as a PDF with a degree of image compression. I write manuals with a LOT of screen captures and line art that needs to be clear. So it is a balancing act between image clarity and PDF size. The PDFs on the web need to be smaller - sure you can undertsand.
Anyway, when I print the PDF again, I lose both my destinations and bookmarks.
Anyone know of any way to avoid that?

Control the images by creating a custom PDF Job Options and then selecting it in the PDF Job Options drop-down of the PDF setup dialog box (File > Save as PDF...)
Create the custom PDF Job Options file with Distiller. If you do not have Distiller, open the Printing Preferences of the Adobe PDF printer. Start with the Smallest File Size Job Options settings and Edit.

How to permanently stop Safari Webpage Preview Fetcher process?

Since the Safari Webpage Preview Fetcher process takes up to 10% of my CPU on occasion and and it uses bandwidth and it's just dumping loads of images into ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.safari/Webpage Previews is there a way to permanently stop this process from ever starting up again?
I've blocked it with Little Snitch to see if it that stops it but I don't think it has. Has anyone successfully stopped this process for the long term?

The scanner scans the document without a problem but when I select 'SAVE' and
specify a location and file name, a system error 'The HP scan application was
unable to save the file to the specified location'. It will save a regular PDF file
or a JPG file with no problem, but trying to save an searchable PDF or .rtf file
results in the above mentioned system error.
This problem occurs either from HP SCAN or from the 8600 scan panel.
The computer is running Windows XP and the I.R.I.S. OCR software is
loaded.

I understand you're receiving an error message "The HP scan application was unable to save the file to the specified location". I will do my best to assist you!
First, I would recommend downloading this tool called the Print and Scan Doctor. This tool diagnoses and helps resolve common printing, scanning, and connectivity problems, including: (This information is stated here.)
USB: Verifies that the USB connection from your computer to the HP product is working correctly.
Network: Verifies that the network connection between your computer and your network is working correctly.
Device Status Test : Checks for device errors such as out of paper, paper jams, carriage stalls, and paper feed issues, and then provides instructions for fixing the error.
Driver Check : Checks for missing or corrupt driver files.
Device Manager : Checks for problems in Device Manager that would prevent printing.
Device Online : Checks if the product has been paused or set to offline, and then sets the status back to online if necessary.
Print Queue : Checks for and clears pending print jobs in the print queue (a log of print jobs waiting to print).
Port Match : Checks the port settings for the HP product.
Device Conflicts : Checks for conflicts with other drivers, such as other printer brands.
Ink Issues : Checks the cartridges and ink levels for issues that affect print quality.
Print Settings : Checks and adjusts the print quality settings.
Test Print : Prints a test page for print quality evaluation, and provides options for cleaning and aligning the printhead if necessary.
Scan Tests : Checks the scan mechanism, drivers, and registry entries.
Let me know if this tool fixes a scanning problem on this post. If this doesn't resolve your issue, then I am going to recommend uninstalling the software. Please follow this HP document on Uninstalling the Printer Software.

Acrobat 9 Shared Review error "Could not save the shared review-enabled pdf file. .

I attempted to start a Shared Review of a PDF file. I have been unable to initiate the review. Upon completion of the setup routine (i.e., filed idenitified, server location identified, participant's email entered, send selected, I get the error message - Status" Could not save the shared review-enabled PDF file.

As a workaround, don't put the source PDF at the network folder location which you have specified in Shared Review wizard. Eg. if you are initiating a review at the network location \\servername\xyz, ensure that your source PDF is not placed at \\servername\xyz.
I have not understood your second question. Do you mean to say that Acrobat.com option is disabled for you?

File Save As Other Reader Extended PDF Enable Commenting & Measuring GRAYED OUT

I have an PDF form created in Adobe LiveCycle Designer ES 10.0.
When I open in Reader, All the "Sign" options are grayed out.
Under "Properties" Signing is allowed but Commenting is not.
From all I have seen, I hope that allowing Commenting will allow me to use the sign features.
The only solution I'm finding on the internet is below:
File > Save As Other > Reader Extended PDF > Enable Commenting & Measuring
It is grayed out in my (latest version of) Acrobat pro.

**Will this even solve my problem?**
**Is it possible that it is impossible to use these features on this document?**
At this point, I've spent about two and a half hours on this issue and haven't been able to find a solution. Very frustrated.

Thanks. I'm not an IT person and needed that lead.
In the end, I just printed to Adobe PDF and then was able to use the commenting options (once I had flattened it). For those who might come across this - this is one of the only ways to flatten a XFA PDF.
