Save_As, and Color picker suggestions

Hello again-
In using custom themes, I see two features that really do
need to be added, at some point:
1. 'Save As' capability. I know this has been mentioned
before, but this is definitely necessary to develop new themes from
prior ones. Right now, to use a prior theme nondestructively, I
must enter the RGB values for each of the source theme colors in my
new 'unnamed' theme. Ai, caramba! The completely natural workflow,
as with most applications of all sorts, is the ever popular 'Save
As', and one can simply and safely develop a new theme. Please
consider making this a priority- it is sorely needed.
2. I have had many occasions to modify a color which I like,
but which I wish to 'gray down'- not changing value, but rather
trying to add some of its complement. This is essentially moving
toward the 'center', ie, moving 'inward' (away from the edge of
'pure color', toward the center of 'grayed color').
OK: Now, perhaps I am missing something, but I don't see a
way to 'keep on the line' when moving toward the center- I can't do
it by 'touch', and I know that I am moving both inward and 'off the
line' to wind up with a color that is different as well as
'grayed'.
So I'd suggest: How about adding something like the Ai 'Live
Paint' palette: In Ai, if you hold down the Shift key while moving
the color indicator, you are restricted to moving ONLY in-out,
along the 'line' of the color. An excellent key addition, allowing
me to confidently 'gray' or 'ungray' a color.
Thanks. --Bill

Sami-
Thanks for the response. My art-graphics background (apart
from any tech/applications) is originally watercolor painting- been
doing that for 20 years, primarily en plein air (smart aleck art
community way of saying 'I paint outdoors'). So I am very much a
colorist- my palette in WC and oils has no earth colors, for
example (burnt seinna, raw sienna, umber, blacks of any kind)-
everything is mixed 'by eye' from primaries (and from a 'base'
blue-green, Thalo green).
So- Kuler is great fun for me. I use it in two ways:
1. As an idea generator: I will occasionally troll the Themes
based on a keyword (coral), and will refine based on the metawords
I see in interesting Themes (ex: I might be led to 'tropical'). I
will save anything of interest as a Favorite, which I will later
prune down to the few I'd like to keep.
I often will refine a Theme- the most frequent thing I find
is that most Themes are so STRONG (!)- that is, the colors tend to
be at full saturation, un'grayed' with their complement, and at
full brightness. I have made several very successful palettes from
existing Themes by 'graying down' selected colors from the Theme,
and often muting their brightness a bit.
2. I also use Kuler in a back-and-forth way with Ai's Color
Guide. I think the Color Guide is a tremendous resource- I
regularly use it for Shades of a color, and for the array of
choices in Triads, etc. I may download a Kuler Theme (my own or a
found one), and work the colors in the Color Guide. Once I have my
particular color(s), I may go back to Kuler and fiddle some more.
When I work with a project (whether in Ai, Ps, or on
paper/canvas), I try to stay within 5-6 principal colors. But I
also want variants that are within similar color families. So on an
Ai project, I may have 1 to 5 or 6 Kuler Themes available- but they
are all 'within the family' of one another, and in the end I only
wind up using a subset from across the Themes.
Whew! (I think I will relax now by watching a black-and-white
'noir' movie...)

  • The color picker needs some serious love

    Please just make it function exactly like photoshop.....
    Things I cannot do but want to:
    When I have a gradient on an object - and i click on one of the little things to select a different color in the gradient(object A) and get the eyedrop tool and select an color from another object(object B) - give us the option somewhere...a setting or something to NOT replace the gradient (object A) with whatever the eyedropper took. So if i have an object with a gradient(object B) and color pick a color on it - I don't want object B's gradient to completely replace Object A's gradient. I just want it to take the color of that specific part of the object and apply it to the tick in the gradient on object A....just like in photoshop.
    Let us paste hex codes into them in one shot....i dont want to type in the hex code in 3 different fields, just give me one darn field!

    Oh well I didn't know about the shift clicking....live and learn.
    Still...adding in hex codes in one line would make my life so much easier.
    Also, right now when you double click on a swatch from a gradient you can pick a color via clicking the default selected color icon or swatches...adding a color wheel icon under those two icons would be really nice...just like in photoshop.

  • Color picker not working in CC and Elements 12

    My Color picker keeps picking gray instead of any other color i chose. its the same in CC and Elements 12. I'm on an iMac running Yosemite.
    the color picker works ok when no document is open but reverts back to gray once i open one.

    Cheers thats worked. don't know how grayscale got selected.

  • Photoshop CS5 Color Picker and Gradient Maps

    I painted a black & white image and put a gradiant map adjustment layer on top to test some colors for the final image.
    I set the color picker to "current layer" to keep painting on the black & white Background Layer to get the levels right without actually using color.
    But as soon as I open the gradiant map again, the colorpicker picks ONLY the colors from the gradiant map adjustment layer.
    Even if I switch off or DELETE the gradiant map, the color picker keeps picking the colors from the gradiant map, that is without ANY color in the whole document.
    This seems to be a bug. Can anyone confirm this behaviour?

    Thanx for checking. Resetting the preferences seemed to have done the trick. But after I opened the Gradiant Map, it happened again. Fiddling with my settings i finally found the clue. This strange behaviour only happenens, when the Panelwindow of "adjustments" is minimized and docked. As long as the window is fully opened and visible, everything is ok.
    Strange though, but glad i found a workaround.
    Thanks again.

  • Color Picker and ProPhotoRGB - false calculation

    This is sort of academic question. When using ProPhotoRGB as working space, Photoshop´s color picker calculates R=0, G=0, B=255 (pure, unprintable blue) and the Lab colorspace is corresponding with L=0,a=90, b=-128. Most confusing is the L-value "0". Zero L(uminance) means black, absolutly black.
    I checked other working spaces and none of them behaves like ProPhotoRGB.
    Could someone clarify this?

    I think I see when it happens:
    If I open a new file in ANY other color space (apart from Prophoto RGB) and then Convert to Prophoto before filling with Blue,
    the L* channel does NOT register zero.
    I opened a new AdobeRGB file and immediately converted to Prophoto RGB / CMYK web coated SWOP 2
    Typed 00; 00; 255 in RGB in Picker which then showed L*=30; a=69; b=-114
    Did an Edit menu/Convert to L*ab; and Lab Colors are still reading L=30; a=69; b=-114 in the info Palette while the L* Channel alone shows a mid-gray.
    Tried it again with Image/Mode change to L*ab with the same results.
    And it is the same in both 8- and 16- bits per Channel.
    BUT then I tried opening a new file in Prophoto RGB / CMYK web coated SWOP 2:
    Did the same as above and THEN I got the strange L*= 0 reading;
    I also got it if I converted that file directly to L*ab.
    But if I convert directly from Prophoto to CMYK:
    I get 100C; 80M; 1Y; 1K and a L*ab reading of L*=33; a=7; b=-51
    So it seems to be a bug that you only see if you actually open the original file in ProPhoto. You probably should file a Bug Report if you haven't already done so?
    Using CS4 on a G5 with OSX 10.4.11.

    What operating and version of photoshop are you using?
    It sounds like the color picker dialog is opening off screen and that's why photoshop seems to lock up.
    (you should be able to press the Esc key to dismiss the the hidden color picker dialog)
    Do you have or had dual monitors?
    Have you changed the screen resolution recently?
    Anyway, resetting the photoshop preferences will probably gets things working again:

  • Problem with adjusting both transparency and color of an object

    I am writing a program where when an object is picked, both it's transparency and color will be altered (the object will become opaque, and its color will turn to a predefined "selected" color), while the previously selected object will return to its original transparency and color. I am able to get this to work, except that objects that were picked two or more picks ago will remain in the selected color, albeit in their original transparency. This problem only seems to occur when transparency is factored in. The picking/color & transparency altering code is as follows.
    public class PickingListener extends MouseAdapter {
         private PickCanvas pickCanvas;
         private TextDisplay overlay;
         private Primitive p;
         private Primitive lastP;

              overlay = overlayArg;
         public void mouseClicked(MouseEvent e) {
              pickCanvas.setShapeLocation(e);
              PickResult result = pickCanvas.pickClosest();
              if (result == null) {
                   System.out.println("Nothing picked");
              } else {
                   p = (Primitive) result.getNode(PickResult.PRIMITIVE);
                   if (p != null) {
                        setSelectedColor();
                        overlay.setPickedBarInfo((BarInformation) p.getUserData());
                   else
                        System.out.println("null");
         private void setSelectedColor() {
              ColoringAttributes barCA = new ColoringAttributes();
              TransparencyAttributes barTransp = new TransparencyAttributes(TransparencyAttributes.NICEST, 0.0f);
              barCA.setColor(ColorConstants.SELECTED);
              if (lastP != null) {
                   lastP.getAppearance().setColoringAttributes(origColor);
                   lastP.getAppearance().setTransparencyAttributes(origTransparency);
              origColor = p.getAppearance().getColoringAttributes();
              origTransparency = p.getAppearance().getTransparencyAttributes();
              p.getAppearance().setColoringAttributes(barCA);
              p.getAppearance().setTransparencyAttributes(barTransp);
              lastP = p;
    }Capabilities to alter the primitive's color and transparency are all set.
         barAppearance.setCapability(Appearance.ALLOW_COLORING_ATTRIBUTES_READ);
              barAppearance.setCapability(Appearance.ALLOW_COLORING_ATTRIBUTES_WRITE);

  • Book Module Lightroom 4 -- can I use a color picker to pick a color from a photo to use as the backg

    I am trying to match a background color for a page in a Blurb book using the Lightroom 4 Book Module.  Is there any way I can use the color picker to pick a color from the photo to use as the color for the background and as the type color?  I see the color box for these situations, but the color picker only seems to work with the color array that pops up and doesn't go to the photo.  Any suggestions?  Am I overlooking something very obvious?

    It works for me.
    The usual Lightroom way: click the eyedropper onto the color palette first, then hold and drag to your photo to sample color.

  • Am I just crazy? Didn't there used to be a color picker?

    So, as far as I can remember, there was a tool in Leopard that let you hover over any color in any application and find it's code to replicate it... I thought it was called Color Picker and looked like a little eyedropper with a color wheel behind it.
    Now, I can't find it. I'm wracking my brain to locate it, but I can't.
    My main objective is to get a color I saw on a website into Photoshop, but since I can't find OS X's built-in color utility to get the hex code, I can't get it right in my graphic.
    Any suggestions on locating the Color Picker? Or on how to import colors from websites to my Photoshop swatches?

    Sed --
    I hope I wasn't one of the smarmy ones . . .
    I really thought you just weren't seeing it.
    When a user moves an app out of the place the system
    expects to see it, it will ignore it.
    In the past, a lot of users wanted to group all their browsers into one
    folder they made themselves, called, "Internet apps." So Safari, Camino, FF, etc.
    all went in that folder. When doing updates, the apps were not found free standing in the application folder, and they were ignored, i.e., never updated.
    So the explanation you got makes sense to me.
    EDIT: Maybe if you use it a lot, make an alias for it in the Dock where you can easily access it.

  • Color Picker Doesn't Work

    I'm using PSE8 on a PC with Windows7 and something seems to be wrong with my color picker in the Editor.  I click on the Foreground icon (lower left of the screen), choose a color, click OK, and it doesn't change the color on the icon.  The default colors seem to be only black, white or gray.  I am in RGB color mode (under Image) and I have clicked Convert Color Profile to "Convert to Adobe RGB Profile" which is now grayed out.  Under Edit>Preferences>General, I have selected Adobe as the Color Picker.  Can anyone figure out why I am not getting the color I select for the Foreground color?   Thanks for any suggestions at all!

    Does your image have an adjustment layer or a layer mask
    on the layer that is active when using the color picker?
    If you have an adjustment layer, make another layer active
    and see what happens.
    If the layer that is active has a layer mask, click on image
    thumbnail to the left of the layer mask and try the color
    picker.

  • In Apple Color Picker, need to sort custom list

    I just created a custom color list in Apple's Color Picker which is not sorted and I want it to be.
    FYI: the Apple Color Picker opens in many applications for choosing what color something should be. For example, in TextEdit use menu Format > Font > Show Colors.
    On the Color Picker, the 3rd tab by default has pre-defined lists of colors, including "Apple", "Developer", and "Web Safe Colors". I created a custom color list, which is out of order alphabetically (or any other way). I would like to sort that list alphabetically (or by color, I guess) without deleting and recreating every color. Can this be done?

    Hi, whytwolf.
    I thought your question was interesting, so I spent some time experimenting.
    The Colors Palette doesn't permit re-ordering the items in the list, such as by dragging or Command-dragging them.
    Unfortunately, the color list one creates using the Colors Palette — e.g. the file colorlistname.clr in your Home > Library > Colors directory — is an NSDictionary object. It's saved in binary format and it appears virtually impossible to edit reliably with a text editor. These objects are usually created and read using Cocoa programming. I know of no editor specifically designed to permit one to change these objects directly, and a variety of Web searches for such an editor failed to find a tool.
    It appears there was once a utility called Color List Editor that seemed tailor-made for your purpose, but it appears to have vanished without a trace. While the VersionTracker listing remains, all of the links to the download are broken. I was able to track down the author's Web site but the download isn't available there. I've e-mailed him in case it's still available, though it may not work with Tiger given its age. If I hear back anything from the author, I'll let you know.
    What I recommend you do is recreate the list, first focusing on the order of items by name you want to include in such. Then, once that's sorted, assign the swatches. You should probably do a trial run on paper or using a spreadsheet to get the names and sequence correct before you undertake the actual list-creation process again using the Color Palette. Then work carefully, since correcting errors in mid-list means deleting the error and all entries thereafter. Most tedious!
    It might also be worthwhile to submit a Mac OS X Feedback, suggesting Apple enhance the Color Palette so that one can reorder colors by dragging them in the list, at least for color lists the user has created, i.e. those on which the user has Access permissions of Read & Write.
    Good luck!

  • Flags and colors

    This is contains both questions and suggestions to Adobe.
    1. FLAGS: in Lightroom 3, I found it so useful to have flags disappear in collections.  This meant that I could flag my picks, create a collection with those picks, and then start again to create a smaller collection, and so on.  Now that the flags are global, I feel lost.  QUESTION: How can I create a sublist of picks from a set of picks (when I'm already using stars and colors in other ways, and both are limited in number any way).  SUGGESTION TO ADOBE: i) At least allow the option of having global or local flags; ii) I agree with another suggestion I read that Lightroom have both local and global flags to use separately.
    2. QUESTION: Is there any way to use more than one color identifier on a photo?  This would be so useful.  For example, I may want to use a color to indicate that my husband likes a certain photo, and I may want to also use a color to indicate that I'd like to print that photo.  QUESTION: How can I do this?  SUGGESTION TO ADOBE: find a way to allow more than one color identifier per photo.  Multiple indicators could be so useful: eg. to indicate things like: I've used this photo in a presentation, I would like to print this photo, someone else likes this photo, etc.

    Ad 1: local flags are gone from LR, sad as it is. No ideas if feature requests to set it optional in catalog settings will be implemented...
    Ad 2: I would use keywords for that, which I would set to "not export". Yes, I know, keywords ar not so visually easy as colour labels, you would need to either filter for them. Or, if so regularly used as your example, create smart collections: "to be printed", "liked by husband", and maybe even one with both.
    A work-around rarely is so nice as the intended route would have been... but then - it works.
