Save As .doc in Pages?

I started to use Pages (comming from Word for Mac) but am annoyed with this "Export for Word" issue. I understood that everytime I need to send a document to a Windows user, I have to export it to Word. That's ok. But my files are stored in a network drive so everybody can access them. And obviously they can't read .pages files, only Word's .doc files. I can't predict wich files other people in the network will may need to open so I must save them PLUS export all of them to .doc. This doubles the effort and the disk space the document uses.
I know I can just export them to Word (not saving it as .pages files) but the dialog box is accessible via 2 clicks and a return (File | Export | Next...) and to properly "save" the file (as a .pages file) I just need to hit comm+s.
So I ask if is there a solution to:
1) save files as .doc directly through Pages as the default format, instead of .pages?
2) batch convert .pages files into .doc files?
3) assign a shortcut key to the File | Export menu option?
Thanks in advance,
edgarcn

I have a the exact same problem due to a different situation. I really want to be able to make the switch to PAGES from MS OFFICE, but this export issue is enough to stop me, at least for now. Maybe someone can help me out:
1) I work in a absolute cross-platform environment (hence, no one but me can read pages docs.)
2) I need to constantly send my files to other users in my office.
3) I have a bunch of documents that are already in .doc format.
What option does pages offer to get past this. If I have to export every time its a bit of a hassle.
Isn't there an option to shortcut the export, so it exports over the .doc file you are working on?
It seems this would pretty much solve the issue.
I just thought of something else, maybe an applescript that fixes the issue with an export shortcut? I don't really know how to write apple scripts.

You can manually add the files to your iTunes library...on Apple's support pages:

Also want to convert all Apple works docs to pages docs on my IMac. Is there and app available to do the former. many thanks. b

The iPad and related software is designed to sync with only one computer. I suggest transferring the photos from one of your iMacs to the other so that all photos are on one Mac. Same for all other files you want to sync over.
To get those AppleWorks files to the iPad you'll have to determine if Pages will open them. If it will then use the file sharing feature of iTunes to copy them to Pages on your pad.
If Pages will not open the AppleWorks files directly you'll have to save them in some format that Pages will read. These include but may not be limited to Pages and Word formats.

How may I open Pages '08 docs in Pages for Mac?  Requires saving to Pages '09 which I don't have.

If you still have a working copy of Pages ’08, then save the Pages documents out as .doc Word files and open those in Pages v5.5.2. If you do not have a machine to run Pages '08 on, but still have the iWork '08 DVD, you can install that on Yosemite, and then update Pages '08 to version 3.0.3. Then export the Pages documents to Word. Or you can simply avoid using Pages v5.5.2 altogether, as it has a fraction of the capability found in Pages '08.

How do I edit and save a document in Pages with MacBook Air

    1) Do you want to edit a .doc(x) and then save it as a .doc(x) again? You'll need to be a bit more specific
    2) Pages is an analogy to MS Word, so editing would be just as simple as typing. Go to 'Help' in the menu bar in Pages and then select 'Pages Help' to enter How-to's and Tutorials from Apple on using Pages.

  • Convert Microsoft Word docs to Pages?

I love Pages and want to convert a bunch of Microsoft Word docs into Pages documents. The action would open the .doc file in Pages, then save it as a Pages document with the same title.
Is there anything that would let me do this? Thanks.

I've tried that myself, to no avail.
Here's what I've tried - if anyone can twiddle with this to make it actually work, I too would be grateful!
    1 find finder items
    2 get specified finder items
3 copy finder items (to save originals)
    4 launch app (pages)
but then there's no action for creating a new file or saving-as or anything...

  • How to save to .doc or .rtf without loosing formatting

Hi, I have to submit academic assignments with either .doc or .rtf file extensions. However, in the University there is a protocol for headers and footers so that the assignment is anonymous and when quoting from reference documents we have to indent paragraphs. When writing this is pages and exporting to .doc or .rtf all of the formatting gets lost. If I submit these without the right formatting, I will get marked down. They will not accept .pdf, which works OK - how can I save in .doc or .rtf without loosing the formatting?

Hi Peter Breis, you have suggested soemthing that works which is the first line and left paragraph indents but this still does not work with tabs. The .rtf is not a solution becaue of the need for headers and footers (with pages numbers). In the .rtf file they just appear at the end of the text rather than a header and footer.
Anyway, in summary, thank you Peter, you have given me a solution that works which is to indent using first line and left paragraph indents and to export into a .doc document. The headers and footers export without a problem using this method. I will nominate all the extra marks that I will get from following the University's protocol to you!, Thanks!

  • Set Appleworks to save as .doc by default?

Hi, is there a way to set Appleworks word processing to save as .doc format and spreadsheets to save as .xls by default? (without having to set the save-as file type manually) Is it illegal for MS Office competing products to do this (ex. Mellel, Appleworks, etc)? I feel like if you're going to compete with MS Office on an enterprise level, you need to adapt your product to save as MS Office file types by default... product dominance.

    Hello Nova.
    I understand your wishes.
BUT Apple made different choices and AppleWorks will not evolve so what are you hoping ?
I can't tell you: me a simple user like you will add the required feature to at our old AppleWorks.
Restoring Neutra's buildings cost much more than the original construction did.
    It's the same for applications.
A serious revamping of AppleWorks would have required a lot of bucks resulting in a probably "not really up to date" product.
Apple choose to leave it and enter a new era with iWork.
At this time, if I remember well, we are not allowed to set Pages's default save format to .doc but as the app is young, you may send a request about this feature to Apple. They are listening and I will not post to them telling: don't do that

  • Unable to open Pages docs in Pages 5.5

I cannot believe that I'm having this extreme an issue but not finding anyone else with the same problem thus far.
I am unable to open any Pages docs in Page 5.5. Actually though, the issue began right BEFORE I upgraded to Yosemite and then upgraded Pages.
I partly did the whole upgrade to see if it would fix the issue, and it has not.
I have tried everything, every way there is to open a file, I've tried it. I'm talking about Pages docs I created originally in Pages, that will not open.
When I give the open command, it acts like it's opening the doc, and there are no error messages but the doc simply doesn't open.
HELP!!! I can't do my work!

    Hi all,
I hav been having a similar problem. In the end I re formatted my hard drive (which I had been thinking of doing anyway) re installed Yosemite and pages 5.5 anew. I did the same with my iPad Air V1.
However, files are not syncing across the cloud to the iPad or the other way round. I create a file on Page son the Mac and save to iCloud. Wont show there or on the iPad. File on iPad won't show in Pages on the Mac. It's impacting my business greatly as I create case reports in Police Stations (lawyer) and finish off on the Mac but unless i use iCloud I can't. Driving me mad and cannot think of a solution.

  • Opening AppleWorks Drawing docs in Pages

One of the frustrations some Pages users have expressed is not being able to open AppleWorks drawing docs. I've discovered a way to open AppleWorks drawings in Pages and keep the drawings editable. (The document has to be from a recent enough version of AppleWorks, 6.2.4 or 6.2.9.) It is basically just a matter of copying and pasting the drawing objects into an AW word processing document in the proper way, saving, then opening the doc in Pages.
To do this use the following procedure: Open the drawing document in AppleWorks, use "Select all" and then copy the selection. Now open a new Word Processor document in AppleWorks. If you don't have the tools palette visible, select Show Tools from the Window menu. Now click on the arrow pointer toward the top of the tool palette. (This deactivates the insert text cursor from the WP doc you just created. If you don't do this step your drawing objects will be pasted as a single uneditable graphic.)
Now do the Paste command and everything from your Drawing document is pasted into the WP doc, but still as a collection of individual drawing objects. Now save this document with whatever name you want. Then open the resulting document in Pages. It WILL open and all the drawing objects are still editable. I even found that you can still ungroup objects that were grouped in AW.
I doubt this is a perfect solution, but I was pleasantly surprised to see it work as well as it did in my limited testing.

Unfortunately, this is the only way to get those AppleWorks draw documents into Pages. I believe I described much the same process three years ago when Pages 1/iWork '05 was released. Back then, I don't think text boxes remained editable, but they do in Pages 2 & 3. Links between text boxes may be lost, but they are easily recreated in Pages.
I think that page layout mode in Pages 3 is very similar to AppleWorks draw & am surprised that this function doesn't exist. It's something I've left feedback for the Pages team about more than once.

And if you are looking for a "Save As" feature after you have already saved your document (to save it as a different name), then try one of the following.
    Option 1 - File > Duplicate > File > Save > (New Name)
Option 2 - (Find the Doc) Hit Command + Spacebar, then type the name of the document in the search bar
When you see the document for which you are looking below the searchbar, Command + Click it
A new window will open. Find the document in this window. Option + Click it.
The name of the document will highlight. Start typing the new name. When done. Hit enter.

  • HT4647 Saving docs from Pages to DropBox

    Hi,
Need advice.  DropBox allowed me to import a doc to Pages on iPad (actually offered the option), but I see no way to save it back to DropBox.  Anyone have any suggestions?  Help appreciated.
    daminer

Maybe this is late, and you already solved your problem.
I am a student as well, and the app I use every single day is iAnnotate (the best spent $10 ever - if my ipad could manage only 1 app, this one would be enough for me to say that the ipad was worth $500). The blackboard version we use in school does not allow me to download stuff directly in my iPad (even though I can see them), so I use my laptop to download anything and everything and save it on my Dropbox account. iAnnotate gets everything from dropbox. Slides and textbooks I save them in PDF format. (If you want a good torrent site to download books write me back.)
All my pages documents actually sync via iCloud, and I do my typing from the ipad (with a Zagg Flex bluetooth keyboard) or from my laptop at home.
Does it suck that pages can not save directly to dropbox? No doubt about it, but getting so upset about to the fact that the ipad is not a good companion is because you haven't mastered the tools.
If you really want to use your dropbox account for word documents, then quickoffice pro HD is definitely what you need (office suit that syncs with dropbox and other for $15).
I have the 3 apps, but I chose to go the "hard way" and use pages because when I change applications the formatting slightly changes, and don't feel like fixing it all the time. I don't have office in my mac, but I would guess that the formatting between office and quickoffice will work, but don't really know.
    But trust me on iAnnotate.

I am trying to save a doc. to a external hard drive and it wont allow me. I says its read only, any ideas on how to correct it?

Save it on the internal HD then copy it from this safe location to the external device.
iWork applications can't apply their save process on devices which aren't formatted as HFS+.
But it may also be that for some reason, an external device formatted as HFS+ is set to Read Only.
If it's this case, you will have to change de setting before moving the file on it.

I can't open a doc in Pages, msg says I need "newer version of Pages" but it's already downloaded and updated. Help plse

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5.2 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.2 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Older versions of Pages 5 can not open files from later versions of Pages 5.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud and opened in a newer version of Pages is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed almost 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:
