Save As file locations.

Hello,
I'm using CS5 on a Windows XP system and when I go to File | Save As sometimes InDesign will bring up the folder I opened the file in or the My Documents folder (which I don't use). Preferably, I'd like Save As to open the folder where I opened the file from. I've searched the forums but didn't have any luck. So far I’ve tried creating a new Windows profile and deleting the preferences files. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
  Craig

When it doesn't go to the location you opened the file from it means that Indesign is automatically making a copy of the file you have opened.  This effectively makes the save as operation like an initial save of a new document.  It will be doing this either because the file you are opening is an older version or uses a plugin that you don't have.  In the case of an older version don't overwrite it with a CS5 file so you have a backup in case of future corruption.  In the case of a missing plugin an export to idml and resave of that file should fix it.
As to the annoyance of it there's not much you can do unfortunately.  Sometimes if I know it's going to happen I open up a CS5 file from the same location first and do a save as, this means the next save as goes to that location also.

  • Save in file location?

    Hey all. I'm really confident with actions, but new to scripting. I'm looking write something to 'save as' a file into the open file's location. So whatever file I'm working on, when I run the action or script it will save to the current folder. I haven't found a way to do this with actions so I want to know if I can with scripts.
    For example, on the desktop I have a test1 folder and test2 folder. I can record an action to save an open image from test1 to test1, but then open images from test2 go back into test1. My work around right now is another action (file/automate/batch) to run the saving action and open the dialog box where I can direct it where to save.
    I appreciate any help.

    Just remember if you do delete and replace files you could possible loose something you can not recovered except from backup which you may on may not have.  An other approach would be to rename the original file for possible deletion. Like rename original.ext to original.ext.4deletion. Neither way is ideal for both ways have a problem.
    Remember if in a folder there are different file type with like name for example original.jpg and original.PSD and a Image Processor Pro run was setup to save PSD files for image files in that folder.  When the jpeg file is processed the like named psd file would be deleted or renamed by the mod made.. Then a new originalname.PSD would be saved with the modifications made to the jpeg document.  Then that new originalname.PSD would then be processes by the script for that file would be in the list of files to process. So the new originalname.PSD would be opened and processed deleted or renamed and a new new originalname.pds with a different modification would be saved.
    What you wind up with using the delete mod is your original.jpg and an originalname.PSD That may be nothing like you wanted and your original layered PSD file was deleted never processed and lost. If you used the rename approach the script should fail during the second rename when it tries to rename the new originalname.PSD to originalname.PSD.4deletion for that file now exists.
    If the file list has a different sort order where the psd file is processed first the Layered PSD file still gets deleted and and replaced with the modifications made to the jpeg document a file you wanted and you still have your original jpg file and the original psd file is still lost.  The rename mod should still bomb on the second rename.
    There is no easy solution for often you save different file type for an image and you may have then a single folder. Paul's picture processor has a an source image file type filter you may be able to use his processor to filter a source file type extension and save the same file type. Maybe even replacing source files. I have not tested it.
    Picture Processor II dialog:
    I just did a quick test and Paul's Picture Processor can be used to filter file types and replace the filtered files.
    Source folder = target folder jpg to jpg test dialog settings

  • Save as file location settings

    Hi, so something changed in the new CC from CS6, where when you go to save as in acrobat, it directs you to the last location of the previous file that was saved, and not the last location of the current file.  So if I am working on a file in project folder A, and switch to a different file in project folder B, when I use the save as or save as other function I am directed to project folder A where the last file I was working on was saved, instead of B where the current file is saved.  That has not been the case in previous versions.  Is there anyway to fix this? some setting somewhere?
    Thanks.

    Posted this bug three seperate times to the link George posted... no response.  Crickets...
    Its really painful having to constantly work around this issue.  Again, Adobe, please fix, or at least respond that this was a tactical change in XI so we at least know to go back to the previous version.

  • How do I change the pre-filled file location when I choose Save As?

    16 September 2013
    Using Windows 7 Home Edition and Firefox 24.0
    I always want Firefox to offer a location when I download stuff. At the moment it fills the Save As file location with a location I never use and it is the same one every time, and I don't know how to stop this from happening. How can I teach Firefox to fill the Save As location with another file location, for example Desktop?
    NB This is absolutely not about setting the default under
    Tools/Options/General/Downloads/Save Files To...
    although everyone automatically assumes it is.
    Background: After using Firefox for a few months on my Windows 7 machine, I then imported old Firefox settings from a VISTA machine.

    You may want to reset the prefs file, it should show the last place you saved a page from.

  • How do I convert a file located in my e-mail from PDF to Word.  I can't seem to save it in my word files.

    How do I convert a file located in my e-mail (that is secured) from PDF to Word.  I can't seem to save the PDF file anywhere.

    Hi williamf,
    For starters, please try triple-clicking in the Word document where you want to edit the text (sometimes, that's what it takes to select text in Word). If that doesn't work, I'd be interested in hearing more about the PDF file that you converted and the method that you used to convert it. For example, how was the PDF created (and by what app)? Did you convert via Adobe Reader (what version) or via the ExportPDF website?
    If you can tell us more about the file, we should be able to get to the bottom of things.
    Best,
    Sara

  • Aim to process all files in folders on desktop to run through photoshop and save in multiple locations

    Aim to process all files in folders on desktop to run through photoshop and save in multiple locations
    Part one:-
    Gather information from desktop to get brand names and week numbers from the folders
    Excluding folders on desktop beginning with "2" or "Hot"
    Not sure about the list of folders
    but I have got this bit to work with
    set folderPath to "Hal 9000:Users:matthew:Desktop:DIVA_WK30_PSD" --<<this would be gained from the items on the desktop
    set {oldTID, my text item delimiters} to {my text item delimiters, ":"}
    set folderName to last text item of folderPath
    set my text item delimiters to "_WK"
    set FolderEndName to last text item of folderName
    set brandName to first text item of folderName
    set my text item delimiters to "_PSD"
    set weekNumber to first text item of FolderEndName
    set my text item delimiters to oldTID
    After running this I have enough information to create folders in multiple locations, (i need to know where they are so that photoshop can later save them in those multiple locations
    So I need the following folders created
    Locally
    Hal 9000:Users:matthew:Pictures:2011-2012:"WK" + weekNumber
    Hal 9000:Users:matthew:Pictures:2011-2012:"WK" + weekNumber: brandName
    Hal 9000:Users:matthew:Pictures:2011-2012:"WK" + weekNumber: brandName: brandName + "_WK" + weekNumber + "_LR" --(Set path for Later)PathA
    Hal 9000:Users:matthew:Pictures:2011-2012:"WK" + weekNumber: brandName: brandName + "_WK" + weekNumber + "_HR"--(Set path for Later)PathB
    Network
    Volumes:GEN:Brands:Zoom:Brands - Zoom:Upload Photos:2012:"Week" + weekNumber
    Volumes:GEN:Brands:Zoom:Brands - Zoom:Upload Photos:2012:"Week" + weekNumber:brandName + "_WK" + weekNumber + "_LR"  --(Set path for Later)PathC
    Volumes:GEN:Website_Images --(no need to create folder just set path)PathD
    FTP (Still as a normal Volume) So like another Network
    Volumes:impulse:"Week" + weekNumber
    Volumes:impulse:"Week" + weekNumber:Brand
    Volumes:impulse:"Week" + weekNumber:Brand:brandName + "_WK" + weekNumber + "_LR"  --(Set path for Later)PathE
    Volumes:impulse:"Week" + weekNumber:Brand:brandName + "_WK" + weekNumber + "_HR"  --(Set path for Later)PathF
    I like to think that is end of Part 1
    Part 2
    Take the images  (PSD's) from those folders relevant to the Brand then possibly run more applescript that opens flattens and then saves it in the locations above.
    For example….
    An image in folder DIVA_WK30_PSD will then run an applescript in Photoshop, lets call it DivaProcessImages within this we then save to PathA, PathB, PathC, PathD, PathE, PathF the folder path of C should therefore look like this
    Volumes:GEN:Brands:Zoom:Brands - Zoom:Upload Photos:2012:Week30:DIVA_WK30_LR and of course save the image as original filename.
    Then from the next folder
    An image in folder Free_WK30_PSD will then run an applescript in Photoshop, lets call it FreeProcessImages within this we then save to PathA, PathB, PathC, PathD, PathE, PathF the folder path of C should therefore look like this
    Volumes:GEN:Brands:Zoom:Brands - Zoom:Upload Photos:2012:Week30:Free_WK30_LR and of course save the image as original filename.
    The photoshop applescript i'm hoping will be easier as it should be a clearer step by step process without any if's and but's
    Now for the coffee!!

  • How do I NOT save a file every time I open a PDF file, open an attachment, etc.? I know how to set the option to change the save location, but in some cases I just want to VIEW not SAVE a file that I read while browsing

    I don't want Firefox to save a copy on my hard disk of every attachment, PDF, etc. that I open while browsing. How do I make this happen?

    Firefox needs to download and save a file before passing it to a plugin.
    You can set the Boolean pref <b>browser.helperApps.deleteTempFileOnExit</b> to <i>true</i> on the <b>about:config</b> page to remove such files.
    To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
    If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />
    *Use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a preference more easily.
    *Preferences that have been modified show as bold (user set).
    *Preferences can be reset to the default via the right-click context menu if they are user set
    *Preferences can be changed via the right-click context menu: Modify (String or Integer) or Toggle (Boolean)

  • Why can't FC save the folder locations set for render files?

    I wrongly assumed that when you go to system settings to select the scratch disks (root folder where all the audio and video render folders and files go, capture files, etc.) that Final Cut would save the folder locations within the FC project you are working in. Makes total sense, but for reasons I don't understand, FC does NOT save these folder locations and the result is that I have render files scattered all over the place on my hard drive and it is quite a mess! Fortunately, the project file remembers where it put the render files, so as long as you don't remove or rename any project folders, everything shows up rendered on the time line as it should. The problem is, if I'm working on several projects at once, I have to reset the scratch disks every time I reopen a project, otherwise the program will save it to the last scratch location selected and put all of the render files in another project's folder. I often forget to reset the scratch disks when I'm busy and now I have render files mixed up in various project folders.
    Why can't you just set the scratch disks one time when you first set up the project and have the project always remember that location, instead of always having to reset them every time you reopen a project. I love Final Cut, but this is a product defect that should be addressed and corrected. If the project file can remember where it is putting all the render files, it should also be capable of remembering the scratch disk locations you originally selected when you first set up the project or better yet, save it to the project's root folder by default. Am I missing something here?

    As MtD describes, FCP sets file locations for ALL projects at the system level.  It may help to organize things this way so your files don't end up scattered across multiple locations.
    Save the project files to your User folder on the boot drive.
    For all the other files FCP creates, set them on a non-boot drive similar to this:
    Media Drive
    ----->FCP Documents
    ---------->Autosave Vault
    ---------------->Acme Widgets Demo (sample project name)
    ---------------->Grass Valley Music Video (sample project name)
    ---------------->Jen's Wedding (sample project name)
    ---------->Audio Render Files
    ---------------->Acme Widgets Demo (sample project name)
    ---------------->Grass Valley Music Video (sample project name)
    ---------------->Jen's Wedding (sample project name)
    ---------->Capture Scratch
    ---------------->Acme Widgets Demo (sample project name)
    ---------------->Grass Valley Music Video (sample project name)
    ---------------->Jen's Wedding (sample project name)
    ----------->Render Files
    ---------------->Acme Widgets Demo (sample project name)
    ---------------->Grass Valley Music Video (sample project name)
    ---------------->Jen's Wedding (sample project name)
    ----------->Waveform Cache
    Of course, you can choose to keep renders or the Autosave Vault folder on other drives ... just keep them off your boot drive.  It may not be the way you're use to working, but it's worked well for me the past 14 years.  When you finish with a project and ready to delete the associate files, just go to your media drive and delete folders bearing the project's name.

    This may not help or may degrade any images in your document, but try this: Open the PDF file in the Preview application. Invoke File -> Save As, then set "Quartz Filter" to "Reduce File Size", give the file a different name, and save the file.

  • My Save As files are saving to different locations.

    Since moving from CS3 to CS5 my files don't save to the same location they were opened from. If I have a file open and I Save As or Export, it will save the file in the location of the last item saved.
    How do I change this so that no matter what is open that file's "Save As" or "Export" file will remain in the same location as the original file?
    Thanks in advance.

    If you're on a Mac, try out the great utility, "Default Folder" from St. Clair Software. It'll let you do all kinds of things with open/save dialogs, and I've used it for over a decade and don't know what I'd do without it. It's also VERY inexpensive, so well worth it.

  • Batch processing: save processed file with same name to different location without moving the original

    Hi, I would like to denoise Voice Over files with help of Auditions Batch Process. However, I have to save the files with the same name as the original, so that I can simply relink them in Premiere. Since I do want to keep the originals, I would like to save the processed files to a different location.
    Unfortunately, Batch Processor adds " Copy" to the processed files and moves the originals along with the processed files to the new folder (causing Premiere to loose the original files).
    Can I achieve my goal with Batch Processor, and how would I have to configure it?

    Which version of Audition are you using? The latest ones allow you to specify where the batched files are saved and also if any Prefix or Postfix are added to the file name. These are all under Export Settings in the Batch Process pane. However you must have the Export box ticked to give you access to the settings.
