"Save as..." hang on long PDF with annots.api plugin enabled

Hi,
I am not a regular Acrobat user but I have been attempting to use it recently to process some fairly long PDF files with up to 20K pages which weigh in at 50MB.  I thought I'd share something interesting I have discovered with the community.
What I found is that the larger the file (not sure whether it is the number of pages, number of bytes or something else) the longer it takes for the "Save as..." dialog box to appear.  Then, when the filename has been chosen (just saving as a normal PDF) the amount of time before the progress bar appears also seems to get longer for longer files.
In fact while the save as box is getting ready and while the progress bar is not yet showing, Adobe Acrobat seems to hang and stop responding.  We found that disabling plugins entirely (by shift clicking to open the document) eliminated entirely even for large documents.  We then narrowed it down to a specific plugin called annots.api.
My questions for the community are:
Is this a known issue with annots.api?
What does annots.api actually do?
This seems to be the same for Adobe Reader X (Windows 2012), Adobe Acrobat X (Windows XP), Adobe Reader 11 (Windows 7), Adobe Acrobat XI (Windows 8) and Adobe Acrobat (Windows XI).
Thanks,
James
P.S. If somebody from Adobe want help to recreate the issue, I can provide some sample PDF files that clearly illustrate the issue and snow a possible polynomial performance curve.

i do not have a .mac account. i checked my preferences on that point and confirmed there is no effort to sync with iDisk.
i am only user (account) on this eMac. So i do not have a basis for compaing other users. i may set up a dummy account (other dummy?) to test this theory.
i checked my energy saver prefs. i had computer and display set to Never sleep. i had the box checked to put disk to sleep when possible. i have now unchecked that box.
i also have just downloaded update to 10.4.4. so, i will try that.
any other ideas, most appreciated. i am especially interested to know if there is software to look for possible virus infection that might cause this. since it happens randomly, i suspect it might be some bug (not sure if that is logical analysis on my part)

The drivers are up to date.
I've just realised (doh!) that the printer isn't actually on the network, but has a direct USB connection to the w/station.
The problem is only with Adobe reader, just the first print of the day from Adobe. If the first print of the day is from Word that prints OK, but if the second is from Adobe it still hangs (becasue it's the first rpint from Reader). At first I thought Reader was trawling across the internet for some reason, maybe checking in with Adobe.
I'm baffled. I've tried uinstalling and reinstalling Reader as well!

  • Unable to save a copy of encrypted pdf with Acrobat Pro 10.0

I create an encrypted pdf using prince a tool to convert HTML documents to pdf. I am unable to save a copy of the pdf file when i use Acrobat Pro 10.0.
    It displays the following error
"The document could not be saved. There was a problem reading this document(21)."
However Acrobat Reader (basic) allows me to do so.
I am also able to save a copy of the document with Acrobat pro 7. I raised this issue with Prince and they told me that it could probably be a bug/unwanted behaviour with Acrobat Pro 10.0

  • Exporting to pdf with textboxes, having RTF enabled

I'm doing a lot of documents with editable text fields, but I can't seem to export to pdf, so that its possible to write in the fields with subscript and superscript in acrobat reader.
I need to export the fields with Rich Text Format enabled. Is that possible?
    regards
    Christian

Form features in ID are pretty limited and advanced text formatting would need to be added in Acrobat after export, but I'm not sure waht you want to do is supported even there.

  • Creating PDF with annotation possibility in Adobe reader

How can I create pdf's that have the possibility to create annotations (highlights and sticky notes) in Adobe Reader.
What has to be done at the creating moment of the PDF. Will Adobe Acrobat Standard be sufficient, or is an extended version necessary.
I will create about 1000 PDF's a day. Will one licence be enough?

One license of Acrobat Pro or Pro Extended would let someone "Extend Features in Adobe Reader".
This would have to been done on PDFs already created.
I would be done one PDF at a time.
The alternative is LiveCycle ES (an Adobe Server product) which would do much, if not all, the work programmatically.
    However, it is expensive.
    Be well...

  • How to read PDFs with annotations made by Preview on Mac?

I use Preview to make annotations on PDFs, but I found that those annotations couldn't be displayed in iBooks or Goodreader on my iPad.
    Any solution for this?

I use iAnnotate PDF; im not sure if it will read your preview annotations so you may need to do a little research.

  • Created a Form in Adobe Acrobat XI and save that form as "Standard" PDF

I created a Form with Adobe Acrobat XI and now I want to add a button for save that form as "Standard" PDF with Java Script or other suitable way. Please help me.
    Thank You.

Forms are entirely standard. What do you mean by "standard" in this case. Do you mean "not a form, so that the bits filled in are just permanent parts of the PDF like the other stuff"?

  • I have a form that i need to convert to a pdf with fields

i am working on a form that will be used for registration. I created it in Publisher then saved it as a jpeg.  In order to be more efficient with collecting information, i need to save this form as a pdf with fields so it can be filled out online and perhaps saved and emailed back to me. Please help!!

I am not sure Publisher was the best approach as there is no conversion from Publisher directly to the PDF format as there is with Word.
You will Acrobat Standard or Professional to create PDF forms. There is a 30 day free trial of Acrobat Professional and after that period you need to either buy a copy of Professional or subscribe tot he cloud product. You could also uninstall the Professional version and buy or subscribe to the Standard version.
Entire books have been written about creating forms with Acrobat.
Once you acquire Acrobat, I would print the Publisher document to the Adobe PDF printer and then use Acrobat to add the form fields.
You are also going to need to review how various computer systems work with PDF forms, which browsers work well with PDF forms, how the older versions or Acrobat/Reader work with forms, and email, and if any mobile device will be used how the different apps work or do not work with PDF forms.

  • Adober Reader 9.0: annots.api Crashes

I tried deploying Adobe Reader 9.0 to several campus computer labs I manage. I am using roaming user profiles, but I don't have AppData redirected - it stays on the local hard drive.
I discovered that while Reader 9 works OK for Administrators, it crashes at startup for people with just regular "User"-level privileges. This problem goes away if I remove the annots.api plugin file. Has anybody else seen this issue? I've gone back to Reader 8.1.2 in the meantime.
    Thanks for your help.

  • How do I save an 11x17 spread pdf with bleeds via print booklet (paginated) so I can send to FedEx to print?

I used to be able to Print Booklet and change the print setting to Save as postscript and Distill it but when I do that now the pages get cropped so they are no longer 12x18.

On the other hand ... the next time you do this, you might want to check out one of the imposition plug-ins for InDesign. I work for Sterling Computing, the maker of IDImposer, so that would be my choice, of course!
    Comparing the two alternatives:
    The PostScript-Distiller approach:
"I added a new Document Preset for oversize (File >Print Presets >Define...  make a new one this size:17.5833  11.5833)
Make sure your bleeds are already set (.125)
    File > Print Booklet
Select the Print Preset you just made
    click Print Settings...
Select the Print Preset you just made (yes, again)
    Printer: PostScript File
    PPD: Adobe PDF 9.0
    OK
    Print
    Save the .ps file
Open it with Distiller or Adobe Acrobat Pro
    Output to PDF"
Elapsed time: anywhere from 5 minutes to days or even weeks
    Chance of errors: moderate
    Ease of use: poor
Quality: flattened transparency, loss of managed color
    Vintage: late 1980's
    vs
    The IDImposer approach:
Verify that your Bleeds are set the way you want them, in File > Document Setup... > More Options
    Window > Extensions > IDImposer
    In IDImposer:
Set the imposition type (Saddle Stitch, probably) and desired Sheet size (18 x 12) in the IDImposer dialog
Click the "Impose" button, and watch the screen flash for a minute or so
Optional: Inspect the results in InDesign. Maybe do a quick proof print.
Export to PDF (from InDesign): File > Export... > Adobe PDF (print)
Elapsed time: typically under 2 minutes, for a 16 page booklet
    Quality: excellent

  • With Firefox 10.0.1 I could no longer pdf a web page. On preview, there is just a blank page.

I save some web pages as pdf files like the page showing which books and when due at my local library. After upgrading to Firefox 10.0.1 I could no longer do this. I can do it from my Safari browser. I use this feature a lot and really miss it. It's a deal breaker for me continuing to use Firefox vs Safari.

Thanks for the tip. Although margins weren't the problem, the page length was. I had occasion to use my 500" long page and failed to change it back to US Letter size. I wouldn't have thought to pursue that avenue if not for your tip. Thanks!

  • How can I resize a pdf page content with annotations and highlights in Acrobat Pro?

How can I resize a pdf page content with annotations and highlights in Acrobat Pro while maintaining page size and annotation/highlight interactivity? I've tried to use the crop tool in Acrobat Pro (9) and the page does resize, but the highlights and annotations go all over the place. I specifically need to scale the page content smaller (83%) but maintain page size and annotation/highlight to content connection and interactivity.

An old trick (not recommended) would be to print to a new PDF with the page size selected but a scaling of the content. Only print the document, not the markup, to a new PDF. Close that PDF when done and reopen the old one (or maybe a copy of the old one for safety) and use Document Replace pages and select the new document to replace your current pages. You will then have to go back through the markup to locate it all correctly. There may be a more elegant way, but this may be the fastest.
