Save as IDML

Would anyone be willing to save my InDesign file as an IDML so I can open it on CS5?
Would really appreciate it and I'd be forever in your debt.

I have seen something similar, and in that case I was able to isolate the problem in pretty much the same way you were. I also found exporting the text to InDesign Tagged Text , placing that into a new file, copying to the clipboard, and pasting to replace the bad text.

  • Large document causes InDesign to hang - Save as IDML etc. not possible

    I recently had what I can only call an InDesign nightmare. An important 150 page document I had been working on for months suddenly turned “self-destructive”. I could still open this document and even create PDFs from it, but almost every other action (for example, opening the find dialog or the spell checker) would result in InDesign not responding anymore. Upon restart, the document would be recovered - only to choke InDesign again whenever I tried editing it.
    I tried saving my work using the tricks that are often suggested in this situation: “Package”, “Save as” or “Save a copy” (in IDML format) to create a clean copy of the document without any digital cruft. Unfortunately, all of these commands would result in InDesign crashing or hanging as well.
    At this point, I tried to copy all (threaded) text from the document to a text-only document in BBEdit, a popular text/code editor. But even a simple “Copy” command would crash InDesign. An when I managed to copy a section of text from the InDesign document to BBEdit without InDesign going down immediately, BBEdit would hang, too - something that almost never happens; this is an incredibly robust editor.
    As a last resort, I created an empty InDesign document and moved chunks of content from the defect document there piece by piece. Whenever InDesign crashed, I realized I had come closer to the “land mine” in that doc.
    After several hours, it came down to one paragraph of text that could neither be edited or copied without InDesign hanging, so I simply rewrote that. Switching on invisible characters showed nothing except letters and spaces for this paragraph.
    So now I have saved my formatted content, but lost all master pages and other settings. And of course, I still don't know what happened in the first place...
    Has anyone ever experienced something similar? Is there another way out of this situation (where even exporting to IDML or using “Save as” isn't possible anymore)?
    It is only this one document that caused trouble, so I doubt trashing Preferences would help.
    Thanks!

  • InDesign CC impossible to save in IDML ?

    Hi,
    Sorry for my poor english (I'm French).
    When I want to save, I can't use the scrolling menus wich are on the window  :
    -> the first is for choosing a location for saving
    -> the second to select the format :  Indesign CC or compatibility mode IDML
    Both are not activables and the software usually crash after this tentative
    I can't work in the CC version because it's not stable and I can't use in the CS6, because I can't export in IDML.
    I had try to make "cut &paste" between the 2 version but it's don't work (?)
    Am I the only one with this trouble ?
    Is someone could help me ?
    Thank to everybody
    Denis

    Thank's for your help.
    I had reset the preferences many many times, before asking for help.
    But the trouble is still here....
    On the copy screen (just before the crash), the 2 menus with the red frame are not active

  • Can I back-save (via .idml) from InDesign5 to InDesign2?

    I have InDesign 5, but my church has InDesign 2?  Is there any hope?  Thanks.

    Well, the church has the Bridge (which I have no idea how to use), but they didn't have Illustrator or Photoshop.  They have some other Adobe apps, so I'm thinking they bought all of them separately.
    I on the other hand have CS5.
    Well, I didn't think it was going to work, and it sounds like it won't.  Not surprised by the answer, but at least it saves us trying to go backwards three versions.
    Thanks, Peter.

  • Can't save IDML format automaticly

    Each time I save as IDML in INDesign CC, I have to manually re-choose the IDM file format in the file dropdown in Windows 7. It doesn't just save my open document as it would in any other case. Why do I always have to re enter and choose this file format each and every time although its the same document? It's open and I'm always forced to do the same procedure of manually picking the IDML format every time I hit CTRL+S and that is getting on my nerves. It really shouldn't be like that? The document is open and it should be enough to choose the IDML format the first time I save the document - right? Can't InDesign remember this? Very annoying.

    You have serious workflow issues.
    The main one being that all your colleagues should be working in the same version of InDesign as you.
    Saving back to IDML so someone with CS6 can open it is not a good workflow. Mostly, any new things that InDesign CC14 can do cannot be translated back to CS6, not to mention any new features that CC15 or CC16 may bring to the table.
    Just because your agency/company employs a flawed workflow doesn't mean you guys are doing it correctly!
    Just so you know - your workflow is not the norm.
    However, I have given you the alternate method of using File>Export and choosing IDML from there will retain it as a sticky.

  • InDesign infinite loop when exporting INDD as IDML - one specific document

    Hi,
    I have several thousand INDD files that are generated using CS4. We are migrating to CC server so need to be able to run scripts against these files. One of the scripts performs some (simple) manipulations and then saves as IDML...
    Except...
    With a percentage of our files (I've found two out of less than a hundred files that I've tested) the export to IDML task never completes. InDesign server simply hangs, permenantly. The only way to get our server back is to manually terminate the process using Task Manager and then restart. I have looked at the INDD files using InDesign client and can see nothing whatsoever the matter with them. However, even in client, even after deleting _ALL_ content, when I try to save as IDML, I get the export process hanging (see screenshot below).
    So, I guess I have two questions;
    1. How can I modify InDesign server to detect and recover from this form of infinite loop?
    2. Does anybody have any idea what could be causing the infinite loop? (And how to resolve it?)
    Thanks,
    Gaius

    You should try a divide and conquer for the InDesign file.
    That is split it in two and then try export to IDML
    Whichever sides hangs is where the problem lies. You can keep halving this document until you find the problematic page/pages.

  • Can't open .idml file in cs5

    My client created .idml file in CS5.5. I cannot open it in CS5 or CS4. I open the application, click open, select the document and NOTHING happens... no error message, no document, nothing. Help?
    Here's the file if someone wants to give it a go: http://pdgrafiks.com/fileCopy.idml.zip
    It's a small file.

    I'm having the same issue, however my file size is 2.5 MB, so it shouldn't be empty. File was 5.5, had them save as .idml file, and when I try to open I get the following message:
    Cannot open "filename here" Please upgrade your plug-ins to their latest versions or upgrade to the latest version of InDesign.
    Everything seems to be up-to-date, is there something I'm missing to be able to open this file?

  • CS6 document save as CS3 document

    I want to export a CS6 document for editing in CS3. How does it work?

    First save as IDML, then open on indesing cs4 and export to INX.

  • IDML opens as "untitled" document

    Hi,
    When I open .idml file in InDesign, it opens as Untitled-# document. Is it possible that when I open .idml it opens as the filename instead of "Untitled-#"?
    What I have is bunch of .idml files, everyday I have to open them one by one, change a few things and then save it as a new file, with the same filename, in a different folder. Of course this task cannot be automated since the changes are extremely random.
    Regards

    Well...no, no you can't. That is how it works.
    Is there a reason you're asking in the scripting forum?
    IDML is not really intended as an editing format. Since "Save" or "Save As" won't save an IDML-format file, it would be nearly meaningless to have the filename be related to the IDML filename.
    You could write a script that automatically opens an IDML file and stores the original filename, and then a companion script that exports the currently opened file to that saved filename.
    What are you trying to optimize for, though? Remembering the filename when it comes time to save?
    I suppose you could (or have a script which does) automatically save to filename.indd after you open filename.idml. Then you might have a more sensible default for exporting.
    But that seems cumbersome.
    Perhaps you could tell us more about why you work in IDML as a format rather than INDD.

  • Indesign CC export to .idml not reliable

    I just sent a large financial document to print. Its 132 pages.
    The printer (like every printer I work with) has not purchased CC yet and apparently refuses to.
    No prob - Ill just save as an .idml so they can open it in CS6, right?
    WRONG!     DEAD WRONG!
    Turns out that when I save as .idml and its opened in CS6, random acts of weirdness occur.
    Namely, lines applied to Indesign Table Cells can disappear. That's right. In a 132 page FINANCIAL document, the client is looking at a proof and asking why the lines are not in some places. Im lucky it was caught (by the client) before going to print.
    I had no idea what the problem was because my files were fine. But I exported as .idml and opened it up in CS6 and... Lo and Behold, the lines were missing again in the exact same areas.
    In the past I have just exported to .idml and sent to print, but I cannot have any faith in that process anymore. I encourage any and all to export to .idml, then open it up in CS6 and review every last line, break, color, etc. THEN send the CS6 file to the printer.
    Or better yet, maybe dont use CC at all, which is what Im contemplating.

    I must thank you Bobby. Friday is our donut and pastry morning and when I came in and saw your ridiculous post, I brought the entire team in to get a good laugh.
    Im not sure if you use Indesign in a professional capacity, or even work with printers or not, (from your comments and assumptions I would say no), but ever since there has been a way to backsave, it is exactly what has been done when sending files to print. Printers are notorious late adopters of new versions (for good reason). For years and years EVERY SINGLE printer we work with - whether its hear in San Diego, printers in New York, the Mid-West or even in China - every time we get a new version of the software and send it to print we have been asked to backsave the file. Hell, some print shops are TWO versions back! This is standard procedure and has been for over a decade. Sorry if you dont know this, but that is reality.
    Also, your assumptions show a lack of understanding of a modern design studio. See, when you have governmental agencies, multi-national energy company's, Casinos with over 240 locations world wide, Hospitals, biotech companies, etc etc as clients, it is 8 times out of 10 the CLIENT who choses the printer - like I mentioned above. Additionally, (since apparently you are not aware of this), the client often does not make their final decision  on which printer to select until WELL AFTER the project is underway. In this particular case we found out 3 days before it was supposed to go to print what printer it was. So your naive "the first thing you do when working with a new printer is pick up the phone" comment is truly uneducated and is very telling about your experience in the field.
    Futhermore, anytime I come across a printer that requests PDFs (its extremely rare - we usually work with professional high-end printers with actual pre-press departments, not Mickey Mouse outfits that want me to do their prepress for them) - The first thing I do is call my client and ask them "you got a good price on printing didnt you." Of course they did because their printer wants ME to prep their files for them - so I need to go back to the client and raise my rates. Heck, I can do pre-press, I used to use a stat camera creating chokes and traps back in the day - then did the same with Illustrator - but that is not the role of the modern design studio, its the PRINTES responsibility. All respectable professional print shop wants to have control of the files so they can make adjustments for their presses and even humidity - i.e. Native Files.
    Now, I originally made this post so that other professionals would be aware of the flaw in backsaving - a flaw that DID NOT EXIST BEFORE. I know this from years of experience. You comment that you dont care if I have been doing this for 240 years... but im still wrong,  is the height of arrogance. I mean, do you even hear yoursel?
    I was under the impression that this was the place that real design professionals discussed Indesign. Apparently its the place for people to rack up 28 thousand comments posting uneducated drivel.

  • InDesign CC Auto / Simultaneous IDML capability?

    I own CS5 Design Premium, and I also subscribe to Creative Cloud. I avoid using the CC version of InDesign, because of concern about opening new files if I stop subscribing to CC. I'm wondering if there's a way to set up my InDesign CC preferences so that when I save a file, it automatically and simultaneously saves a IDML version as well

    In InDesign CC 2014.1 v.10.1.0 you can package your documents with the option to add IDML to the package.
    Saving and exporting to IDML is also possible, but this requires a startup script (ExtendScript-Script).
    Search for "Martin Fischer", "saveVersions.jsx" and "hilfdirselbst.ch" on the web.
    Martin once wrote such a script that would work for you even when on CC…
    It's in German, but should work for you as well.

  • Conditional Text, IDML, how?

    Hello,
    I have setup a ConditionalText in IDML like this:
    designmap.xml:
    <Condition IndicatorMethod="UseUnderline" Name="STD" Self="Condition/STD" UnderlineIndicatorAppearance="Wavy" Visible="true">
        <Properties>
          <IndicatorColor type="enumeration">Green</IndicatorColor>
        </Properties>
      </Condition>
    <ConditionalTextPreference ActiveConditionSet="n" ShowConditionIndicators="ShowIndicators"/>
    story:
    <CharacterStyleRange AppliedCharacterStyle="CharacterStyle/$ID/[No character style]" AppliedConditions="Condition/STD">
    </CharacterStyleRange>
    When I open the idml in InDesign I can see the condition in the list but the text I conditioned is NOT conditioned.
    If I export the idml the CharacterStyleRange has disappeared.. What goes wrong here? IDML specification didn't help...

    Hi Joni,
    how did you do the IDML manipulation ?
    It could be that the serialized Story file is not the way InDesign expects it, read : Attributes or/and elements are in the wrong order.
    We had similiar problems when we used a standard XML serializer in the IDMLlib to save modified IDML XML files.
    We ended up writing our own XML serializer to do it the way InDesign likes it.
    From the IDML specification:
    4 INX, IDML, and InDesign Scripting
    IDML requires that some elements and attributes appear in certain order, while scripting DOM can be viewed as random access.
    Best,
    Andreas

  • I can open my new InDesign files by going up through the menu and opening that way, but when I try to just double click on an InDesign file I get error messages telling me that certain plugins aren't available.

    I upgraded my Mac a few weeks ago to 10.10.2 Yosemite, and I joined the Adobe cloud so I could get access to all the new apps. I read a blurb somewhere about converting older InDesign files to the new CC version I'd have to open the old files in my old InDesign CS3, export to an ins file, then open that file in the new InDesign CC, then export it again to an idml file, then open that file and you shouldn't have any of the usual conversion problems. For the first few files I had to convert, it worked just fine. Now for some reason, whenever I try to open one of these converted files just by double-clicking on the file itself, I get an error message that says, "The document ____ uses one or more plug-ins which are currently not available on your system. Do you want to open anyway?" When I click OK, then I get another error message that says, "Cannot open ____. Please upgrade your plug-ins to their latest versions, or upgrade to the latest version of Adobe InDesign." I thought this CC version of InDesign was the newest. Can somebody please tell me what gives with this? Any help will be very much appreciated.

    Did you reinstall CS3 after CC?
    For that matter, doing an in-place upgrade on the OS is always a gamble with Adobe programs. Reinstalling all the versions you need, in order, would probably solve your problem.
    And you shouldn't need to save as IDML after opening the .inx in CC.
