Save as in TextEdit?

I'm in TextEdit and I want to do a Save As... command but there isn't a Save As.. command. I see Save a Version command but nothing happens when I select that.
Why is this so difficult?
Thank you

Apple's decisions are driven by consumers' demands? Ha! That was a good one. So consumers don't want to author DVD or Blu-ray, don't want RED camera support, want all their iPhone dock accessories to become obsolete when they buy an iPhone 5, don't want the latest GPU for the Mac Pro...??? I could go on and on.
Man, I've been using Macs since about 1987 and I have to laugh at the idea that Apple does things because the consumers demand it. Apple is notorious for forcing their vision on consumers, and dropping technology, or not adding new technology. Sometimes they do it because it's a better solution. Sometimes they do it because they practice planned obsolecense, like many companies. Sometimes they just make a mistake (putting out FCP X the way they did).
In any case, I'm in Windows Notepad and there is a Save As feature under File.
I'm in Word for Windows and there is a Save As command.
I don't really know what you are referring to when you blame Windows users for Apple's really dumb decision to drop Save As.
Apple made a dumb move here. They aren't perfect. It's silly that you would defend this and it makes you look like the Mac fanatics that they parody.
If the majority ruled, you'd see a lot more Flash web sites right now versus sites being designed to be iPad/iPhone compatible because Apple doesn't support Flash in iOS. The idea that Apple is being dictated to by Windows users is flawed, in my opinion.
Apple is making Macs more like the iOS, not Windows.

  • TextEdit.app won't save new files to sub-firs of my Documents dir

This just started happening recently. Right after I installed the last Pages update AAMOF.
I can successfully save a new document (.rtf) file to my Documents, but not to any sub-dir. The error dialog box says it can't save because file doesn't exists. And, this gets logged to the console:
TextEdit[283]: view service marshal for <NSRemoteView: 0x7fe8cb422cd0> failed to forget accessibility connection due to Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=4099 "Couldn’t communicate with a helper application."
It's just TextEdit that's doing this, no other apps seem too be affected.

    Thanks Griff W,
I ran disk utility, and although it reported lots of permissions issues with the iBooks app and some Printer stuff, nothing related to TextEdit.
I've done a little more investigating...
This is only happening on my i7 iMac at work. Everything is fine on my MacBook Pro and my i5 iMac at home. So, I guess we can discount the Pages update having anything to do with this.
Everything is up to date, updates wise, on all of my machines listed above.
I did enable FileVault encryption on my work i7 iMac around the 1st week of August. That could have possibly messed something up with TextEdit??
Again, this is just happening with TextEdit, when trying to save a new document to a sub-directory of my Documents dir. Similar saves to other directories and/or sub-dirs work just fine.
If I save a new TextEdit document to my Documents dir, that works. And, if I then move it to a sub-dir, I can successfully edit and save it again with TextEdit.
This is the message I get in the TextEdit dialog box when doing a failed new document save: The document “Untitled” could not be saved as “See.rtf”. The file doesn’t exist. What the heck does that mean anyway? The document/file "Untitled" doesn't exist.. well of course not, it's a new document!
I do have a bad habit of keeping unsaved "notes, reminders, todos, etc." as TextEdit documents laying around. And, doing logouts, reboots, etc. with these "unsaved" documents still laying around. Could that have contributed to this issue?
This isn't exactly a show stopper, I can work around it. It's more annoying then anything. Any ideas on how to fix things will be appreciated though.

  • How to save plain text attachments

I often get email with plain text attachments (e.g., source code).
Mail tries to be smart and displays the attachments in the body of the mail.
But I wold like to save them as usual. I can't even control-click on them
Does anyone have an idea what I can do?
    TIA,
    Gabriel.

I guess I should've said that up front:
Yes, I can highlight the text and save it in TextEdit, but that's way too tedious , because I get a lot of emails with several text attachments, and I have a hard time figuring out the boundaries between text attachments ...
    Best regards,
    Gabriel.

  • I updated to Lion. Now when I preview a document, there is no Save As button, it is either Save a version or duplicate. How do I get back my Save As button?

I updated to Lion. Now when I preview a document that I have in Downloads or Documents and I want to Save As, when I go to File, instead of Save As, I now have Save Version, then when I click on that it says the document is locked, do I want to unlock or duplicate? How do I get back to just plain ole Save As?
I have no idea why the document would be locked. Help, please.

Here is a normal Save menu in TextEdit, for example:
Now with that menu visible in TextEdit simply press down the OPTION key and a Save As option should appear just below the Save option in the menu.
Now, I may have forgotten since it's been a while, but that may not work in Lion. So either you upgrade, if possible, to Mountain Lion or Yosemite or:
Select the Duplicate option which will open a new copy of your document. You may then Save that copy. When you do you will be asked to provided a new document name. This would replace Save As.

  • TextEdit - Plain Text Files That Open In Windows?

Hi. Just got an iMac. I've been trying to make plain text files in TextEdit that show up correctly in Windows on a PC. I've tried saving the same document in 4 different formats:
    - Plan Text Unicode (UTF-8)
    - Plain Text Unicode (UTF-16)
    - Plain Text Western (Mac OS Roman)
    - Plain Text Western (Windows Latin 1)
But none of these look right on a PC. All of the line breaks I've entered show up replaced by black rectangles. Why is this?
What format should I save as in TextEdit, to create Plain Text files that are compatible with both PC and Macs?

First, note that TextEdit does not create plain text files, it creates rich text files (.rtf). If you truly want plain text, try the free TextWrangler:
    http://www.barebones.com/
As to the line break problem, Macs use just a carriage return as the end-of-line character, while Windows uses a carriage return followed by a line break character. At least, that's how I understand it. Most likely, whatever app you're using on Windows is dumb enough that it can't figure out what to do with the Mac line endings. TextWrangler will let you change the line breaks, so you could use it to create plain text files with Windows line breaks. Of course, that doesn't help if you didn't really want plain text (ie, absolutely no styling, just raw text).

  • Crashing at Save

My iMac is crashing in textedit, preview, ps when trying to save files. TextEdit crashes with a new doc and text when it comes to the Save window. Preview and PS crashes the same way with any type of image file format.
    10.6.8 Intel Core 2 Duo

    Thanks for your input!
I've got over 600GB available on my HD, and 4GB, 800 MHz DDR2, SDRAM
Rather than "crash" the program "unexpectedly quit" at open of the Save or Save As window in multiple programs. After running through the usual Disk Utility, cache clean up, deleting unnecessary fonts, and booting into Safe Mode, I finally located the answer in this post:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15458523#15458523
However, after moving all my folders/files from the desktop to the HD, now when opening the HD or folder, the system hesitates to open them and sometimes finally opens the window or does not open it at all then closes all windows that were already open. I then have to double click the HD again and it opens fine. I tried it in new user account and in "root" with the same behavior.
    Odd.
    Any suggestions welcome!

  • How does one save new files to an encrypted disk image?

I encrypted a particular folder, and used a sparse image to leave plenty of room, as well as using read/write permissions, but I don't see how to save new files to the encrypted folder.

So, I guess you have to save the file to the desktop and then drag it to the mounted disk?
No, you should be able to save directly to a mounted disk image via a dialogue box. There is no need for an intermediate step. As long as the encrypted disk image is mounted, it is open and appears to be just another folder.
As an experiment, open a Textedit document and save it to the mounted (open) disk image via Save As in Textedit. It should be able to do that.

  • Document Save

The default save location for TextEdit (and other apps that can store documents on iCloud) is iCloud. It takes a few clicks if you want to expand the save dialog and save a file locally. There is no way to change this in the GUI, but if you run the following command in Terminal, this will set the default save location to On My Mac for all iCloud-compatible apps:
defaults write NSGlobalDomain NSDocumentSaveNewDocumentsToCloud -bool false
To change this back to the default, run this command:
defaults write NSGlobalDomain NSDocumentSaveNewDocumentsToCloud -bool true
I was under the impression that if in System Preference, iCloud, Documents and Data was NOT checked that the documents were save to my local computer and NOT sent to the Cloud. Is that correct? If so then I do not need to do what is mentioned above.
In case I do have to do what is above how do I do that? What steps to I take in order to have that command activated.
    All comments/help are welcome.

    The  icon properties are :
                   Function code     = SAVE
                   Functional type   = (Blank)
    How to check the functionality.
    Kindly guide me.

  • I get the message "The application "Finder" cannot be launched. -600  Read

For the last couple of days my G5 was not shutting down, so had to hold in front power button, manual sleep sometimes refused to wake and applications failed to quit. and yesterday i got the following error.
I get the message "The application "Finder" cannot be launched. -600
A reboot got things working for a bit, but on opening 'TextEdit' a document that had locked up before the reboot was displayed, on trying to save the file 'TextEdit' locked up again, trying to do a 'Preview' 'Grab' of the screen worked but then locked up 'Preview'.
So i booted into 'Safe Boot' logged in, did a virus scan using ClamXav just for piece of mind.
I opened 'TextEdit' and the same document opened as before yet i still could not save it. So i rebooted.
After reboot i opened 'TextEdit' and again the previous document appeared and this time i was able to save it. And so far no apps have failed to open or quit.
My question is, i know prior to booting into 'Safe Boot' the system fixes somethings, what does it 'fix'?
I did run the ASD (not the AHT) disk and all was ok, so thought it should be a software issue, on running TechTool Pro4 i did notice 'Finder' errors which i set to fix (just opened TechTool Pro4 and it has locked up but did 'Force Quit' unlike 'TextEdit' which has just failed to even 'Force Quit')
On looking in on the 'Console Messages' i have seen as below:

I have an image on a firewire caddy (which has 10.5.8 bootable on it) so i can easily erase the boot drive and image back but i want to understand what is actually happening.
Is it worth running AppleJack 1.5 or similar?
    You advice is appreciated.

    Hi there,
My question is, i know prior to booting into 'Safe Boot' the system fixes somethings, what does it 'fix'?
In Tiger/10.4.x it disables Startup/Login Items, clears Font Caches, tries to repair the HD. loads Safe Drives, disables Airport & Quartz.
In Leo/10.5 it does more, but doesn't disable Airport, which now has a Sfe Driver I presume.
I suspect From the Console post that perhaps SAfe Boot repaired the HD, but of course that doesn't take care of any corruption done while it was muxed.
Run Disk Utility & Verify the HD, it at least will tell us something.
Is it worth running AppleJack 1.5 or similar?
Assuredly, AppleJack is great & won't hurt, & will eliminate a lot of questions if not the problem.

  • Can't eject network volume after extensive browsing

    Hi!
I have a problem that seem to be related to Mac OS X itself.
After browsing an AFP network volume for an extended time theres a quite big chance that the volume won't eject properly.
What happens is that the volume icon vanishes from the desktop but it stays in the side bar of a Finder window.
Even if one waits for hours it still won't go away and upon clicking on the volume in the sidebar a dialog comes up saying it can't be found.
I've tried doing "sudo -f umount /Volumes/volumename" but it doesn't do anything.
If one tries to do a restart the system gets stuck because it can't properly unmount the volume.
If one force a relaunch of the Finder via the "Force Quit..." menu option in the Apple menu, what happens is that the AFP Client process stalls. It shows up red in Activity Monitor.
I can reproduce this behavior on several different computers and on G5's browsing the volume sometimes leads to a Kernel Panic involving "vnode_put".
All machines are running Mac OS X 10.4.8.
The AFP volume I'm browsing when this happens consists of several folders that contains several .eps images. The file-structure looks like in this screen shot: http://home.mac.se/star-affinity/filestructure.png
    Anyone else recognize this?
    G4 Quicksilver 867 MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

The volumes are mounted via the Finder.
Ok, I'll try remove all the "dot" files I can find, but I can guarantee you it has got nothing to do with the volume not unmounting properly. :P
No, but seriously, I have made a clean install of the system on both machines and upgraded it to 10.4.8. I then duplicate 4 different .eps files that I copy from a third machine and I duplicate them and make a file structure somewhat like in the screen shot I link to above.
I then start file sharing on the machine with all the files and use the other to browse this machine. I browse from within the open/save dial of TextEdit.
I must say I wonder how any hidden files would cause a problem in this case.
I also wouldn't say that there are many issues with Tiger. It is this thing with network browsing and perhaps some kind of video driver issue that I've posted about here: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=3302238#3302238
Otherwise I think it runs great!
    Can't understand why you're still at 10.3.9.
Anyway, thanks for trying to help!

  • How to Hide main user's files in useraccount's finder navigation?

Ok So you're the main user of the computer.
YOu make an account for someone to use.
    I made it simple finder.
with access to Safari and Text edit.
In my account i have files and folders all around the computer in the MAC HD folder and stuff, in the DOcuments folder etc.
I know i can make a Locked folder and put all those folders and files and that will hide them.
However i dont want to do that. I want to leave my files and folders where they are.
So the solution would be that Whenever the user does an OPEN or SAVE file using Text Edit or Safari, that he only gets access to the SHARED folder.
    How do i do this?
How do i make it so that the user can't navigate and search around through all the finder folders when using the OPEN or SAVE features of TextEdit or Safari?

Your account has a home folder with a desktop, Documents, Library, etc. Other users cannot access those folders. This is true whether accessed through the Finder, TextEdit, Safari, whatever and also true for simple or full Finder. Anything you want to keep private should be kept within your home tree. When you create a new account, it creates a unique, separate set of folders for that user.

  • ARDAgent

Whenever repairing disk permissions, this irritates me:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
    Found this from 2009
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
    Now is 2011, ahem...
    Found this scaring:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=375608&page=4:
IMHO, there should be a way to get a verified good copy of this package directly from Apple, have it installed with the correct permissions that will pass Repair Disk Permissions with flying colors. Ignoring these kinds of messages is leading us down the path to MicroS**t levels of insecurity! Crying "paranoia" to those who show concern is compounding the potential for insecurity. Apple has a responsibility to resolve this.
Here's an example of how this could be VERY bad: You accidentally visit some nefarious web site by clicking on the wrong place in a google page with "ads" (probably you were clicking Save in a TextEdit document and Apple changed focus to S*fari which caused you to click on IloveRussianPorno - please Apple STOP changing focus on us!). The nefarious web site uses Javascript to install a new ARDA package which includes a trojan horse, giving all of Russia and China FULL REMOTE ACCESS to your computer. Some Bad Guy then watches your computer remotely, and when he notices some idle time he takes full control of your Mac, downloads your personal data (which, of course, you haven't encrypted and closed down because this is your "secure Macintosh"). Then he goes on a spending spree with your credit cards and checking accounts, and then he reformats your hard drive... or worse, leaves no trace and comes back occasionally to get more of your personal data.
    Whats up, Apple?

You are worrying over nothing. The claim that a JavaScript could blindly install a new package is totally bogus, and the person who posted that on the MacRumors forum was completely wrong (this is the danger of reading something posted on the Internet without verifying before you fly off the handle). The ARD agent is located in the core library which only the system root or an authorized administrator can alter.
It was dimly possible that someone could write a malicious AppleScript that could use the root access privileges (which is what the SUID change is about) to give a "bad guy" elevated permissions, but even if Apple has not fixed that possibility (which I believe they have) that cannot be done without a user with administrator privileges running the script. So unless you are in the habit of providing your administrator credentials to any web site that asks, or in downloading and running an application from any old site without knowing where the app came from, there's no way a "bad guy" could alter the ARD agent package in any way or use it to exploit your system.
    Regards.

  • Removing Attachments in iChat Transcripts

I am using iChat to save transcripts of my conversations. I got a 150MB file transfer from a friend today, and I would like to keep the conversation without the file attachment. I don't mind hand editing the file if it comes to that, but I want to get rid of the attachment.
    Any thoughts?
edit: That's why I should proofread.

    HI Jason,
The file itself should be dragable to the Desktop as a first stage.
You should then be able to extract the rest of the text and save to a TextEdit doc.
This will make it a smaller file to save.

  • Laptop shut off unexpectedly

HELP! I normally keep my laptop on sleep mode. Recently my computer has been shutting off on me after a few minutes that i turn it on.
At first i thought it was just the screen that would go black, perhaps the light needed to be adjusted. I tried adjusting it and it was still black.
Then i noticed that my computer had shut off on me. I close it and it turns on again like if i put it on sleep mode.  So i begin to use it
again, and it turns off after a few minutes! I tried shutting it off completely and turning it on, same thing happens.  I don't know what to do
I'm trying to avoid taking it to Apple genius because i know its quite expensive. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Word processor you were using? Word? TextEdit?
Word may have it's own save feature.
    TextEdit
TextEdit > File > Revert To > Browse All Versions
Use the Restore button at the bottom bar, then Done.
    Open the "Trash" and check.
    Best.

  • 2 questions about blog section

    Hi,
On my blog section, there are 2 strange things going on. First, the text color on my main blog page is red, and I cannot edit it there, it says I have to edit it on my entries page. I do this, and the red still stays there...any ideas why?
Also, I have 3 blog entries, and on the most recent for some reason it put a thumbnail to the left of the text entry on the main blog page. It didn't do that for the other 2, and I cannot get the thumbnail out of there. If you have any help, I would appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    Steve

The appearance of your main blog page is controlled by BlogName.css which you'll find at iDisk/Web/Sites/iWeb/SiteName/BlogName/BlogName_files. You'll need to open BlogName.css in a text editor (TextEdit is OK provided you have it set to 'Ignore rich text commands in HTML files' on the Open and Save pane in TextEdit Preferences, or you can use TextWrangler, available free from Bare Bones Software).
Search through the file until you find the section which begins
    .Summary_Title {
The first line here defines the colour of the Title text in the list of entries on your main blog page. Change the value there to whatever you prefer, save the file back to your iDisk and sync it with .Mac to upload the change there. Open your site in your browser and the Title colour should have changed. You may need to refresh the page (possibly several times) or empty the browser's cache before you see the change.
One caveat: Be sure to save your edited version of BlogName.css on your computer as a backup. Publishing to .Mac will generally leave your edited version untouched, but there's always a risk that the file could be overwritten. You'll know if this has happened when you see the entry titles revert to red. Just copy your backup version of BlogName.css to your iDisk and sync with .Mac again.
You may want to perform a similar edit with Archives.css, which you'll find at iDisk/Web/Sites/iWeb/SiteName/BlogName.
