"Save As" locks system

Whenever I attempt a "Save As" the spinning disk comes up and the system locks. I must do a Force Quit.
Anyone know how to solve this?
Bob

Wow, this is very strange, Bob. iMovie should be able to do a Save As with no problem at all. Something is preventing iMovie from duplicating the project, which is basically a file-copy routine.
Since you've ruled out problematic third-party plugins, the two remaining causes are: 1) a disk problem of some kind; and 2) some kind of project corruption, perhaps a corrupt video file inside the project. Something that causes iMovie to get stuck while duplicating.
Use another door. Try using the Finder to duplicate the project. Click on the project icon and choose File > Duplicate. Except for some minor cleanup iMovie does inside the Saved As project, duplicating with the Finder has exactly the same result as iMovie's Save As command.
If that fails too, then there's a problem with the disk. Use Disk Utility to Verify the disk. It will diagnose the problem. If it finds problems you must boot up your Mac with the DVD that came with your Mac to Repair the problems. (Disk Utility can't fix a startup disk.)
You said earlier:
The file comes from a clip I captured using Quick Time. ...
I wanted to cut part of it out and do a Save As to a smaller file, and that's
when I encountered the problem.
If I understand correctly, doing a Save As may not accomplish your goal here. The Save As routine duplicates the project exactly as it is now, with no reduction in size. The new project is the same as the old, its clips inheriting all the features they had in the old. These include the ability to be restored to their original state — iMovie's non-destructive editing feature.
To do that, the source video of clips is never shortened by iMovie, never removed from the project. That's true for both the old project and the new.
So if a reduction in size is the goal, doing a Save As may not work. A better solution may be to export the project back to the camera, then re-import that tape to a new iMovie project. That discards video not included in the timeline. Clips such as titles and transitions will no longer be editable, of course, but that may not matter to you.
Karl
P.S.: I still have this nagging suspicion some niggling problem is causing this. Something like trying to save the Saved As project in a folder it shouldn't go. Or not enough free disk space.

  • Why can I not save a locked Numbers document?

    My Numbers is weird, slow and almost impossible to get used to. That's why I now
    I still use Appleworks Spreadsheets on my Powermac for doing daily accounting updates, and
    only then import a copy to Numbers for keeping copies on my MacBookAir.
    I created a template in Numbers, open it for every import, then copy the content of the import
    to the template.  The template is named Copy 0.
    To do that I will import say "12Dec01", then need to open "Copy 0" and duplicate it (so I will not lose this template) then rename the duplicate to "12Dec01".  I
    then open the imported "12Dec01" and copy its content, then paste it into the renamed duplicate, then "lock" that document.
    I now want to save it, but Numbers will not let me save an open document that has been locked.!!!
    Why lock it if a locked document cannot be saved?  Besides this issue of locking, I now have 4 open documents on the desktop:  The import, Copy 0, the Duplicate of it, and the Renamed copy of it.
    You know what? In Appleworks you would only have 1 document open which you "save as" with what ever name (in whatever condition of progress you want to save it), wherever to.
    Accidentally, I found I can save a locked document but only after doing all these extra steps:  In order to lock the document it has to be closed and saved unlocked  to a folder first, then opened up again, and only then it can be locked!
    This process reminds me of the old DOS systems, which questiioned everything you wanted to do with "do you really want to do that?"
    I wonder whether my Numbers is damaged, or whether it has a good reason to be that way?
    Or maybe I missed some instructions?

    Thanks Jeff, I was not aware that a template could be multi-page.  (All the existing templates were 1 page)
    But it worked, saving me some steps.  When I was finished I renamed the document, and locked it.
    Then tried to save it but  could not because it was locked.  I closed it, went to my Spread Sheet Folder ,
    to find it, it was not there.  The Finder could not find it either.
    So I start over again.
    I opened up Numbers and it showed my personal Numbers template folder, it contained both my new
    original 4 page template and the vanished saved document!
    I tried to delete the template containing these document data and could not - I had to go to the Library/Application Support/Numbers to physically remove it from this folder. Then I started over again.  I Finally found out how to make it work: I can now "save as", and then lock, and it will go to place where I want it to be saved and locked.
    The secret is: Click on the document title in the menu bar, and it opens up  "Save as...", which works the same as in OS 10.4.11, and you can pick the place you want for saving.  Once done that, you can then lock the document in the same pull down menu, and then close it.
    I also found later that I can delete a template from its folder, by letting Numbers open the templates,
    clicking on the one I want to remove, then go to the "Numbers Menu/File/Move to...", select "Desktop"
    and from there the selected template can then be thrown into the Trash from there.
    It appears now that the real fault of the Numbers software is that the "Save as" command is not available in the "Edit" or "File" pull-down menus, but hidden behind the title of the document.

  • Password prompt after screen saver or lock screen

    I am running Yosemite on two Macs – an early-2008 MBP 15" and a mid-2010 MBP 13". Both are configured for password after screen saver or when waking up. I have hot corners configured to enable screen saver (lower left), lock screen (upper right), disable screen saver (lower right). On awakening from either screen saver or lock screen, the 15" requests the password in a screen similar to the login after boot or switch user screen – the fullscreen, blurry background, prompt in the center. The 13" prompts for a password in an ordinary modal dialogue window that includes a lock icon and displays on a black background. The 13" has an external monitor attached, but the behavior is the same if it's disconnected. Both systems have one user, and identical settings in Users and Groups. The behavior is the same whether the Guest user is enabled or disabled.
    I can't find any settings to account for the difference, even obscure ones shown in Onyx. Any ideas as to why the password prompt is handled differently in these two cases? Thanks in advance...

  • Syncing locked system preferences

    I have 3 computers that sync everything (including perferences) via MobileMe. That works fine except that I'd like the energy saver and security settings to be different. If I make those two system preferences different for each computer, and LOCK them, will they keep their independent preferences upon syncing?
    I could experiment but computers are at different sites right now.
    thanks
    roger

    the answer is yes i figured it out myself, locking system preferences prevents them from being synced.

  • Cant LOCK system preferences

    Cant LOCK system preferences: File Sharing, Network, startup disk, date&time, time machine, energy saver, print&fax
    I can LOCK : security, accounts login, parental control
    no rhyme or reason. any help would be appreciated.

    If you are using an Admin account for your daily-Use account, that is a problem.
    The Admin can unlock and bypass nearly everything, so these things will not stay locked for your Admin account.
    To protect these items from others, you need to create a new Admin account that you will use ONLY for Administration (such as installing software) and use it to demote your daily-use account to a non-Admin account. then things that are locked will stay locked, and others who wander by your computer will not be able to unlock them.
    PS. Others in your household should each have their own "User" (not Admin) account. Then you can add additional restrictions with Parental Controls.

  • How do I SAVE or LOCK a specific backup in TimeMachine--

    I have a specific backup on my timemachine that I want to protect from being erased or copied over. I've looked in the "genius" book and SL for Idiiots and all Mac documentation but nothing gives me a clue that it is even do-able, let alone how to do it! Thanx

    Thanks for replying. The backup I want to save has my system in "pristene" condition. So when I screw it all up later, I won't have to try to recreate it later. Don't all of the backups get recycled?
    Yes, TM will, eventually, delete it's copies of things that are *no longer on your system.* Depending on how long they were there, and how often you've backed-up, they may be kept for as little as 24 hours or as long as there's room on your system. If they were there for at least a week, and you were doing regular backups during that time, they'll be kept as long as there's room.
    So if there's room, TM will keep things for months or longer. If you screw something up and don't realize it for several months, you probably won't ever notice it!
    How large is your TM drive vs. the size of what it's backing-up? If it's 2-3 times, there's probably plenty of room.

  • Changing desktop pictures locks system preferences

    Re MacBook Pro laptop (OS 10.7.5)
    Problem: Changing desktop pictures locks System Preferences
    If I try to open System Preferences, I get windows for the Change Desktop/Background and the whirling beach ball begins until I go to Activities Monitor to Force Quit System Preferences, which informs me that my "System Preferences is no longer responding."
    I have no trouble booting my Mac,
    checked my Disk Utility informing me that there are no errors,
    checked Permissions without errors,
    went to Users>"my name">Preferences>found the plist for com.apple.systempreferences, moved it to my desktop, tried the Apple System Preferences option with same result. Returned plist .  Hmm, just noticed that I have com.apple.systempreferences with one directly after Library ( i.e., not in any folder), and the other in the Library>Preferences folder. Could that be the foul up?  Perhaps one of these plists is misplaced.
    Any suggestions?

    First follow the instructions in this support article.
    If an iPhoto or Aperture library is the source of your desktop pictures, it may need to be rebuilt, or you may need to update the application to the latest version.
    Otherwise, continue as below.
    Back up all data.
    In the Finder, hold down the option key and select
              Go ▹ Library
    from the menu bar. From the Library folder, delete the following item, if it exists:
              Caches/com.apple.systempreferences
    and move the following items to the Desktop, if they exist:
              Application Support/Dock/desktoppicture.db
              Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    Launch System Preferences and test. If you still have the issue, put the items you moved to the Desktop back where they came from and post again. Otherwise, delete the items.

  • Hide "Save and Lock Button" Button in the HTML Editor

    hi,
    I have created a doc file and saved it as a webpage. Then i have uploaded the file to the KM Content. Now this file can be edited online. When i choose the Html Editor, i get 3 buttons. Out of this, i have to disable "Save and Lock Button" button. Can anyone please help me reganing this. This is urgent
    regards,
    pinki

    hi,
    Thanks a lot for your reply.
    In the renderbutton() button, the new buttons are being created. But if we comment that part of the code, i guess the new button will not be created. I am very new to all this. Please explain . i am talikng about the following code:
    if(lockResource.canExecute() && lockResource.isResourceLockedByMe())
                        //save = new Button(WdfEventDispatcher.dispatchableControlID(this, "onSaveAndUnlock", url));
                        //save.setDesign(ButtonDesign.STANDARD);
                        //save.setText(getBaseBundleString("com.sapportals.wcm.control.edit.ResourceEditControl", "btnSaveAndUnlock"));
                        save.setOnClick("onWdfEvent");
                        //buttonGrid.addComponent(buttonGrid.getCurrentRowIndex(), buttonGrid.getCurrentColumnIndex(), save);
                        //buttonGrid.setCurrentColumnIndex(buttonGrid.getCurrentColumnIndex() + 1);
    Actually, the problem is "Save and Unlock " button is behaving weirdly, even though, user is clicking in it , it is remaining locked. At first, we thought the user was clicking "Save and Hold Lock" by mistake. So we wanted to disable it.But now the problem is somewhere else. Can you please help
