Save as -- now 2 levels of file-naming for pdfs?

In OSX 10.4 when you want to create a pdf of a document or webpage, you hit Print, then Save as PDF, and then either you accept the file's original name or you change the name, hit Save, and voila, your have your PDF just the way you want it.
In OSX 10.5.8, when you want to create a pdf, you go through the same process BUT: instead of hitting Save and voila once you've nailed the filename, a 2nd dialog box opens up, and if you've changed the name of the file in the 1st dialog box, you discover that the filename did NOT change at all, and that you have to enter it all over again in the 2nd dialog box.
What on earth is going on here? Why the 2 dialog boxes? What are they for? Is there a way to set the program so that it behaves as it used to? I desperately need access to the latter option.
I would greatly appreciate help in sorting this out.
Thanks!

  • File Naming for Image Sequence to work properly?

    Hi,
I shot about a 226 shot time lapse this weekend and so far having a severe pain getting it to be a time lapse movie in photoshop.
    Shots were 3 minutes apart.
Originally I tried using the RAW images, then exported them to full size jpeg, then finally exported them to HD video resolution jpegs thinking format might be part of my issue. But it seems to be more of a naming convention problem.
    Originally tried :
AAA-XXX-<4 digit shot #>-20100508.<ext> & AAA-XXX-<4 digit shot #>-20100509.<ext>  as it spanned over night. Once sequence was loaded I then saved as PSD before trying to export.
That would only load the very first image, even though it would come up with the frame rate question.
Then I shorted it to 0508-HHMMSS.jpg & 0509-HHMMSS.jpg and set the frame rate to 10 frames per second. It warned "This sequence has gaps". Once sequence was loaded I then saved as PSD before trying to export.
This created a 36 minute timeline in CS5 but the opening image was the one I selected, and then about 36 minutes of blank, with a random image from somewhere in the middle of the scene being the last frame.
I tried this in both CS5 and CS4 thinking it may be a bug just in CS5.. but I get the exact same results.
What naming convention is the Image Sequencing 'open' really looking for to work properly. I would have thought that either of the above would have worked.. but so far they are not.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Using Adobe Photoshop CS5 & CS4.
    Christopher

I did just do a generic 1.2.3.4.5.6. export up to 226 and that seems to have worked. But I don't think I should have to do that and the image sequence function should be able to handle more agile file naming sequences.

  • Reducing AI file sizes for PDF distribution

    Greetings all,
Using CS2 Illustrator, I have a file that is approximately 14.5M large. It's completely black and white, with a b/w photo. I was thinking that when I saved it as a pdf file, the size of the pdf document would be considerably smaller so people could send it by email. It came down to 1.9, but I'd like to get it smaller than that. I'm guessing I have to reduce the size of the embedded photo?
I also have a version of the file with a color photo. It's AI size is 34.1M, it's converted pdf file size is 32.5. I'm desparate for a method that will get these two documents down below 1M size so that members of my Barbershop Chorus can send the pdf files out announcing our upcoming show.
    Any help GREATLY appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Bond

When you save the PDF, Illustrator will downsample images according to the settings you chose. Downsampling the source images won't help for file size. Usually the biggest source of bloat is leaving "Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities" on. This adds the entire Illustrator file to the PDF.
I suggest you start with Smallest File Size and adjust the downsample options under Compression. Reduce image resolution if sizes are still too big or increase resolution or image quality if sizes can be increased and quality is unacceptable.

  • No file association for PDF files

I have installed Adobe Reader on my Nokia E70 (Series 60 3rd edition). I am able to open PDF files, provided they are very small ;-) directly from within Adobe Reader, but not via File Manager. Does anyone know how to set the file association of .PDF extension to open with Adobe Reader?
    Cheers
    -- Mike --

    >It worked for me but the solution was not an intuitive one. Seems like Adobe should work out this kink for future customers.
The fact that you had a problem suggests that it's your system, not Adobe that is the root cause. A successful and undamaged installation WILL create the proper file associations, and will even use the correct version icon for older files (in Windows, though, only one version of the application -- the last one installed -- will be associated with the open command from Explorer or Bridge).

  • Update File Naming For Better Support of Unique File Names

The below feature requests are designed to allow lightroom to generate unique filenames for images from any number of cameras that all conform to the same naming convention and can be sorted chronologically by name both inside and outside of lightroom.
The specific feature requests to allow this to happen are:
    1) Add a "centiseconds" field to the time strings that either uses those values from cameras that support it (like the Canon 5Dii). If a camera doesn't support this value, then lightroom should just pad the string with "00".
    2) Add an always on "conflict" counter that defaults to "1" for every image, but would increment as much as necessary to deal with sets of files that would otherwise have conflicting names. This would use the same logic as the conflict number that currently exists and adds "-2", for filenames that would otherwise be duplicates. The difference is that the new one would be applied 100% of the time instead of just when a duplicate is detected. It should also be possible to setup this number to have one or more leading zeros.
To give an example of how this would work, I'll start with a set of example file names and demonstrate how lightroom currently handles them and then show a comparison of how they would work with the enhancements listed above.
Say you are shooting an event with two different camera and have synced up the clocks on each so their timestamps match up. In the current (3.2) version of lightroom, you could use the pattern:
    img-{DateYYYYMMDD}-{Hour}{Minute}{Second}
and end up with something like this
    img-20101207-201101.jpg
    img-20101207-202213.jpg
    img-20101207-202213-2.jpg
    img-20101207-202213-3.jpg
    img-20101207-203324.jpg
    img-20101207-203324-2.jpg
Just adding the ability to have centi-seconds in cameras that support them (like the 5DmkII), you can eliminate a lot of the redundancy, but there will still be times when conflicts occur. Especially if you are using cameras that don't support that level of detail in the timestamp. So, if we add both the centi-seconds and the always on conflict number we can create this pattern:
    img-{DateYYYYMMDD}-{Hour}{Minute}{Second}{SubSec}-{0Conflict#}
and we would end up with something more like this:
    img-20101207-20110143-01.jpg
    img-20101207-20221300-01.jpg
    img-20101207-20221300-02.jpg
    img-20101207-20221323-01.jpg
    img-20101207-20332426-01.jpg
    img-20101207-20332452-01.jpg
Most of the duplicate names have been eliminated by the subsecond part of the tiem stamp, but all filenames have the exact same pattern, regardless. This makes scanning images by name much simpler. Especially if you need to run an external process that looks at file names over them.
(Note: I'm use a number with a single leading zero padding in this case for the conflict number. It seems unlikely that a single digit would ever cease to be enough, but just in case having a zero padded version would be a nice option.)

I would like to be able to rename a virtual copy and simultaneously make it be a true disk copy, and auto add to library.
We have the virtual copy thing covered and it is one of the great  things that makes Lightroom a great application which
has brought us new and amazing workflows.

  • Data Merge naming for PDF files

I have an Indesign document with data merge information on it.
I can successfully get it to create either a multipage document or multipage PDF.
I now want to name each PDF page with one of my field names and create single named PDF files from the original multipage PDF.
I am using a mac, but unfortunately know nothing about scripting.
I have searched the forums for a script but can't seem to find what I may need.
    Could anyone possibly help please.
    Many Thanks.

    Hi Pete,
Unfortunately it is not possible to stop these quotes coming out, unless you remove the DataFile object (but if you do that you will also lose the SIZE, REUSE and AUTOEXTEND clauses).
I have logged a bug on this. Thanks for letting us know about this problem.

  • Sequential file naming for repeating action on same file

I need to export all the hands of a clock to animate the individual hour and minute hands in the software I'm using. So, I'm trying to set up an automated process to save 60 clock hands so that I don't have to do this manually for all future clock designs by doing rotate, save, rotate, save....
I have an action to rotate 6 degrees, and save. This works. I don't know how to automate this to repeat 60 times, other than nesting it in a folder. Problem is, that each time the first action to Rotate and Save plays, it saves over the last file with the same filename I used when recording the action.
OR, if I use the Export function (to save a PNG, which is ultimately what I need, and not an AI), it doesn't work at all (nothing gets saved) unless I turn on the Dialogue option for the export step, and click through the screen manually to OK the filename and settings. Surely there's a way to just make it save with the default and work?
    Thanks in advance.

Hi PrePressPro, thanks for taking the time to outline that for me. But, when I duplicate the arrow through Effects, I can't separate the arrows. It's like one big 60-arrowed shape that I can't ungroup, and I need to be able to export each arrow individually. Though I don't know why I need to focus on drawing all 60 arrows, I already have an action to rotate my one arrow into every position it needs to be and then Export. Either way, my action needs to Export, and it's not working.
I don't know why the Export doesn't work, I'm even prepared to set up 60 actions so that I can custom change the name of each export to 1, 2, 3, etc... and then I Play the folder. I've set up the first 10 steps. But as you can see below, though everything is set up, it won't Export unless I turn on the Dialogue option next to Export. Which shows me first the Export screen asking me to confirm the filename, and then it shows me the PNG options screen. It should work without Dialogue turned on!

  • Dynamic file naming for 820 outbound transaction

    Hi All,
We have a requirement to set the file name of outbound 820 based on few fields of xml payload from the backend BPEL process. We are currently implementing batching by sending the action name in (jca.jms.JMSProperty.ACTION_NAME) property. We are using SFTP and B2b 11.1.1.6. I've referenced the following http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/b2b-integrations/learnmore/tnb2b11g002-326857.pdf
    . Please share your thoughts.
    Thanks in advance!!

For batching scenario's filename passed from back-end is not considered. For batching scenarios, you have to provide the "Filename Format" in your partner channel configuration and at runtime B2B will automatically generate the filename accordingly. If you are working with AS2 then you may find "Filename Format" setting under "Exchange Protocol Parameters" of your AS2 channel (starting from 11.1.1.6.0). Filename format can be specifid using any one or all of below parameters -
    %FROM_PARTY%
    %TO_PARTY%
    %DOCTYPE_NAME%
    %DOCTYPE_REVISION%
    %MSG_ID%
    %TIMESTAMP%
    %MSG_TYPE%
    %INREPLYTO_MSG_ID%
If you are working with 11.1.1.5.0 or lower versions of 11g then please raise a SR with Oracle Support to get an appropriate patch for providing filename format in AS2 channel configuration.
For FILE/FTP/SFTP protocols, filename format setting is available in all 11g versions.

  • Maximum Number of Pages and File Size for PDFs

Assuming that your computer has ample CPU, memory, and storage, how many pages and what file size does Adobe recommend that you limit a single PDF to using Acrobat Pro XI in order to avoid any issues.

I don't know whether there's a limit on number of pictures you can add to a book
as long as they are contained in 100 pages, which is the maximum photo pages on a book.

  • Photoshop (all versions): Inconsistency/Bug in automatic File Naming algorithm

    Hello,
I discovered this problem in PS CS3 and CS5 (don't have CS4) after a student of mine found it in PS Elements 8. Here's one way to replicate the issue:
    1) Open any image in Camera Raw. Let's call that file FILENAME.dng
    2) Click "Save Image" button on the left
    3) "Save Options" window opens
    4) Under "File Naming" there are several drop-down boxes. The first box is filled in with "Document Name" as the variable. Leave that alone and move to next box to the right.
    5) In this box, select the variable named "2 Digit Serial Number."
    6) Now, in that SAME box right after the word "Number," click after the "r" (at the end) and enter a hyphen "-"
    7) Look above the boxes and it shows you are about to rename the file "FILENAME2 Digit Serial Number-.dng"
    8) The term "2 Digit Serial Number" is now part of the file name (with a hypen at the end).
This should never happen because it's mixing variables and constants. Plus, most importantly, nobody would EVER type ANY of the drop-down values as a file name. And, if someone did type in the hyphen at the end (like my student did), she obviously intended it to be a 2 digit number followed by a hypen and not the term "2 Digital Serial Number-."
There may be other places in the software that use this file naming algorithm, too. For instance, in PS Elements 8, it cn be found also found under File>Process Multiple Files.
This isn't a big issue, I know, but it should be fixed.
I am primarily looking for a response from Adobe personnel.
    Thanks,
        Mike

I did some tests and was unable to get it to work even with RAW. (perhaps it was just me) I did get it to work with multiple images being sent to "Merge to Panorama in Photoshop CS4" In all other cases, LR wants to control the naming. You end up with a file sent to PS with a LR controlled name added automatically to the LR catalog. (this is a duplicate of the orig LR file as no edits are made with this name) The file you create with your own name (when you save as from PS) needs to be imported back into the LR catalog manually later.
This is not the kind of integration we need.
We need to be able from LR to have jpg edits done in PS and named according to our needs, and re-added to the LR catalog automatically when we exit PS.
    For example the following scenario:
IMG_1234.jpg is processed, cropped and tweaked in LR, then sent to PS for detailed enhancement.
Coming out of PS might be:
    IMG_1234_Lucis90%
    IMG_1234_Lucis50%
    etc....
We need to make this work somehow....

  • PSE 8 - Inconsistency/Bug in automatic File Naming algorithm

    Hello,
I teach PSE 8 and a student found something that is confusing and should be fixed in Camera Raw and Process Multiple Files. Here's one way to replicate the issue:
    1) Open any image in Camera Raw. Let's call that file FILENAME.dng
    2) Click "Save Image..." button on the left
    3) "Save Options" window opens
    4) Under "File Naming" it has 4 drop-down boxes. The first is filled in with "Document Name." Leave that alone and move to next box to the right.
    5) In this box, select "2 Digit Serial Number."
    6) Now, in that SAME box right after the word "Number," click after the "r" (at the end) and enter a hyphen "-"
    7) Look above the boxes and it shows you are about to rename the file "FILENAME2 Digit Serial Number-.dng"
    8) The term "2 Digit Serial Number" is part of the file name. That should not happen.
This same problem appears in  FILE>Process Multiple Files. And, I just checked in Photoshop CS3 and it happens there, too. I havent' checked CS5 yet.
My student was saying to me, "Why is my file name being called Whatever2 Digit Serial Number"?
The reason this is not a good thing is because this is a beginning program and it's confusing for new users. Plus, nobody would EVER name the file with using any of the weird terms in the drop-down box.
Note: If you highlight the entire term "2 Digit Serial Number" and then enter a hyphen, it works as it should. But, you shouldn't be able to add onto the end of the term.
I am looking for a response from Adobe personnel.
    Thanks,
        Mike

Are you on Win 7? If the files in the Get Photos dialog disappear after you select them, confirm if the names of selected files/folders is shown under the File name . If yes, you can import these files by clicking Open. You should find the issue addressed in E9.

  • PE7: Problem with auto file naming of scanned photos

I began scanning photos using PE7. PE stored the files in my designated folder. It named the first scan "Image1.jpg." Thereafter, files were named "Image1-nn.jpg." I would finish for the day, and PE would pick up where in left off in file naming for the next batch.
All was well until I got the bright idea to rename the first photo to "Image1-0.jpg," so it would sort properly. Worse, perhaps, I renamed it outside of PE, in Windows Explorer. Unfortunately, this confused PE completely. Now, it wants to restart the file naming with "Image1.jpg," and scans terminate with a message that the scan was unsuccessful because there is already a file with that name in the catalog.
How do I go about resetting things back, so that subsequent scans resume at the next available file name+number?
Second, is there a way to control what prefix ("Image1") gets inserted in scanned file names?
    Thanks.

By renaming the file outside of PSE, it's now "missing" in your PSE catalog and PSE doesn't know how to find it -- its thumbnail should have a yellow question mark on it.   Do File > Reconnect > All Missing to reconnect any missing files with their new locations, and going forward, only rename and move files in the catalog using PSE.
Once you've reconnected the missing files, the scanning should no longer be confused about file names.
I don't think you can control the filenames used by the scanning.  You can set the folder used via Edit > Preferences > Scanning.   For a number of reasons, I do scanning in two steps -- first, I use the scanner's utility to scan to a file, then I drag the file into the Organizer.  This gives me fine control over the file's name and folder location.

  • ACS4 file naming

Well all is working well with the latest ACS4 install. My question is file naming for packaged books.
I have ebook ISBNxxxxxxx.pdf and after I package the book ACS changes the file name to 2357347534090480686-089.pdf (a real long different name)
Support mentioned there is a way using the packaging xml for each to specify the file name, but they didnt supply a how to. Does any one know how I can package a book and continue to use the same file name?
    Info:
my source is a pdf named ISBN.pdf
I use the -xml -jpg batch packaging command
Just want the name to remain the same after packaging,
    thanks in advance

    Hi,
You need to add a ISBNxxxxxx.pdf tag at the level below the package tag in you packaging xml file.

  • Different filesize for PDF files created in background vs. foreground?

When I create a PDF file in a background job the filezise is more than 2 times bigger than created with same selection in the foreground?? Why is that? Any suggestions?

    Hi Sachin,
Thanks for the thread. But it does not help us.
We should explain the issue of these sizes in little more detail.
We have a program created for PDF outputs. The PDF form is created in SFP transaction like smartform.
As you might know that a fucntion module gets created internally for the PDF form similar to a smartform.
Now during execution, the function modules(for PDF form) returns an parameter called /1bcdwb/formoutput, which has field called pdf. This field holds the entire PDF output in binery format. We use this to create a file on the appliction server. I hope you can guess why the size of the file is bigger to the file that I save the PDF output on desktop from print preview.
We are looking for a solution on how to reduce this file that gets stored on the application server using the binery data of PDF form.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Kiran Chevuru
