Save As PDF bugs

Hi All,
In the past, I've always printed to PS via the Distiller instance, but now we have new branding with spot colors used in the FM templates, so now Save As PDF is a must.
I am finding what I think to be a bug, because it is consistently reproducible. When I Save As PDF choosing Page Range: All, I can get all of the pages printed with spot colors and working hyperlinks, BUT the leftmost cell of the first row of every single table is empty, even though the FM screen itself displays the row's contents.
Here's the PDF outcome — please note the first body cell of the table is empty:
All tables in the document have the same issue. I tried opening other documents, they all have the same behavior. I tried importing formats from other tables, creating new table formats, etc., and the same issue persists, even when I copy-special the char formatting of a cell that does print and paste it to the non-printing cell.
Here's what the same section looks like in the FM window:
However, when I Save As PDF choosing Page Range: 1 to [last number], the contents of the first cell in the first column of the first body row of the table displays perfectly fine, but of course none of the hyperlinks work. Here's that outcome:
If that cell didn't print in any table of any output, it would likely be some kind of formatting issue, but that's not what's happening. The cell prints anytime that I do NOT Save As PDF for ALL pages (which leaves the less-than-satisfactory options of either no working hyperlinks, or pgf/char/tbl format colors generating RGB while the imported graphics on the ref pages retain a different color output that's nearer the spot color).
It's annoying to have to choose pages 1 through (whatever is last) to get all of the rows of all of the tables to properly display, but I would do that as a work around if the hyperlinks worked. However, having to choose between either getting all the tables' body rows complete, or having all the hyperlinks working, or getting both of those but no spot color (which is what happens when I print to PS, yielding inconsistent color issues) is making me choose between lose, lose, or lose.
Is there a patch or work around for this issue, or am I going to need to either convince Marketing that branding guidelines for color in their tech doc suite doesn't matter, or pay USD$2000 to get a PDF processor that links everything on the backend just to get all the content and colors right, and add the links post-PDF creation...? Perilous choices. (You can choose to lose your eye, lose your ear, or lose your arm, but you cannot keep all three. Choose. 'Tis but a flesh wound. Monty Python must have written the script.)  I'm sorry, I don't mean to sound exasperated (or exaggerated, as you wish); I have never had this kind of issue with FrameMaker before, and I did a lot of talking around here to convince them to buy the new TCS5 as the best solution for their PDF and online help deliverable needs.
Maybe I'm idealistic, but it doesn't seem too much to expect a program as mature as FM to create PDF output that supports hyperlinks, retains spot color, and actually displays all the text relatively WYSIWIG to the FM interface... Surely I'm missing something, or this is a bug with a work-around, right...?
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Rene

Thanks for chiming in.
We've got Pantone 307 CVC as the spot color on H2 text and table header backgrounds, as well as several character formats (bullets, hyperlinks, etc.).
In FM, Help > About shows version as 12.0.1.331. Is there a newer patch?
The PDFs are multi-use, because some customers use them as print material, while others use the PDF directly in electronic format. (Audience is international: UK, EU, all over the Americas, as well as some in east Asia and Russia. Yes we have more issues to address than this, but that's another topic for another post at another forum.)
Marketing doesn't like how green the Pantone 307 CVC renders in the PDF when we use the PS>PDF option, so that's why we started using CMYK output = Save As PDF. ("Whether it's in the PDF or printed, it's supposed to be consistent with the blue in the logo, not a teal color.")
I wonder if the better solution might be to find an RGB visual equivalent...
Row background colors alternate 3% and 10% every other row. I have the same results whether I use the standard Dark Gray from the FM color catalog, or Pantone 444 CVC. The only font in play is Calibri. Heading row background is Pantone 307 CVC with 10pt Calibri 100% White text for headings. Cellbody text is 9pt Calibri 100% Black text (colors from FM stock color definitions).
I was going to upload a sample FM file, but I don't see a way to do so...?

  • Excel Print preview stopped working and when save as pdf, pdf is blank

    mac 10.5.8
    excel home and student 2011
i was working on 2 documents for our accountant.
created one in excel, converted to pdf
created second one in excel, converted to pdf
there was maybe a 30 minute time lapse between these 2 files...tops
the first file does in fact have a print preview, and the pdf opens and is viewable.
HOWEVER, on the second file, there is no print preview, and pdf is blank.
(although the printer does in fact print the file with all the words and whatnot on it...)
    blank pdf prints blank.
i tried xlsx, and xls to pdf, and nothing works.
it seems that all of the files created before this troublesome one can be converted and seen in print preview....even if i add a new sheet to the workbook, that works just fine...can print preview and convert pdf no problems.
now, when i try to do that with the second file, or any new excel doc, i canNOT convert or print preview....everything is blank.
one minute it was working, the next it's not.
it works for some excel files while not working for newer ones.
nothing was changed in preferences for excel, preview, or the printer, unless i accidentally typed a keyboard command that would allow this to happen.
i REALLY need to be able to convert excel to pdf!  and i really don't want to have to print them out just to scan them in and save the scans as pdf...not fun.
i have been researching, or trying to research this here, and it seems that there is a known bug for office 2008, or for a different OS, but none of the work arounds for those issues are helping me here!
someone, please help me get my save as pdf back!!!!

Try different page setups and layouts.  Reinstall the Office fonts, or check for new patches from Microsoft.     Check in Microsoft Office forums.   Mind you PDF from preview and print are not as complete as Adobe Acrobat Pro, and are based on open source PDF standards.  I don't know how well the standards were at the time your Office application was written, or if 10.5's PDF standard was up to Office's snuff, or if you updating to the latest available Adobe Acrobat Reader  and Plugin will help, but between Office's and Adobe's forum you may be abl eto find an answer.

  • Save as PDF or Save Book As (pdf format) Causes Frame 8 to try to quit after creating PDF

I have Framemaker 8p273 and Acrobat distiller 8.1.3.
When trying to creating PDFs from books using either Save as PDF OR Save Books As (PDF) file, the PDF creates FINE but the program then attempts to quit by throwing up weird dialog boxes.
    Steps to reproduce bug:
    1.Open any book
2.Use File-->Save as PDF or File-->Save Books As and then choose type PDF
3.PDF created fine - no errors reported in Distiller window
    4. Framemaker then throws up a small dialog box that says "cannot quit." You cannot close this box, only click OKAY.
The only other issue that arises might be a "cannot print some graphics - will print as gray boxes"
    5. Clicking okay brings up sequence of 5 total of the same boxes (the book file has 7 files in it including the TOC).
    6. After last of 5 "cannot quit" boxes, a new Framemaker one appears, that says "Unsaved Changes in file (book name) Save before closing?" Options are Yes, No and Cancel. Yes saves file and quite Frame. No quits Frame. Cancel leaves file open.
I have reproduced this error multiple times with different books, using both the Save as PDF and Save Book As (PDF) commands.
File--Print Book using Acrobat printer works fine (making sure to enable the acrobat setting so bookmarks are properly generated).
Just frustrated that the first two options cause such an annoying error. Reported as a bug.

    Jaclyn,
I've seen this happen when an API client attempts to close a document that doesn't exist, which defaults to closing the FrameMaker session, but the session cannot close because it's in the middle of some operation. It's normally the result of sloppy code. Do you have any third-party API plugin software running? For that matter, does anyone know if the "Save as PDF" uses an API client? If so, might be a bug in that software, although it seems that there must be something unique going on here to invoke this behavior in your case.

  • Save as PDF file path dialog

Again, another odd operation that Adobe has added to Acrobat Professional DC for Mac. When I Save, or Save As in Acrobat DC, the next window is an Adobe Save As PDF  window with several, helpful options. There is a list of five or so Recently Visited folder, options in the sidebar to send this to a Cloud and a giant button "Choose a Different Folder". This button is so large, I actually, have trouble locating it.
Usually, I'm working in a current document and the folder I wish to save that document to, percolates to the top of the Recent Folders. That's handy. However, when you click that selection, actually any selection, even Choose a Different Folder, the OS X Finder window always opens up to the same folder. The folder is named, simply "T" for temporary. If you save anything there, and close Acrobat, you have lost your work my friend. I have figured that out, now. But my question is, why ask where my destination folder of choice, if you never locate it anyway? That window is a waste of space.
This is obviously a bug between the new DC version and the Mac Finder system. The action in the Save As PDF window need to have the file paths updated.

    Hi
I accessed to a website from my uni library computer using my student account and download a pdf file in there. However, that pdf file contains a line of words saying "Accessed by ... University Library on 30 Mar 2007". This line is printed vertically and on the left side of the page.
Do you know how to remove that line? I think the website just embedded that line into the file.
    Please help.
    Thank you very much.

  • "Save as PDF" - pages truncated - whole right side missing

When using "Save as PDF", the resulting image has the right margins truncated.
The right margins are cropped off so document is displayed in very large characters (although I'm in 80 %) and the whole right side of the page is non-existent.
Problem occurs with Firefox 3.6.14 in my main account.
When creating a test account, problem disappear.
I tried to ditch all Adobe Acrobat preferences and Firefox Profiles.
    No avail.
Problem never occur in Safari 5.03
In my second machine (Mac Book Pro), the problem does not occur.

Yes, Acrobat is my default viewer so far.
Until a few days ago, when I "Save as Pdf" from the printing menu,
I had a regular PDF created from the web page I was in.
Since a few days, I have that clipped unusable page.
When doing the same in Safaru, no problem at all.
That bug has several occurrences from other users in Mozilla forums.
There is also one instance in this Apple Discussions forum.
    No reply though.
In Preferences, I only found Page Display and don't see nothing related
to Page Setup. I only find Page Layout which is set on Automatic. Any other setup don't change anything.
When using the same feature ion my Mac Book Pro, same Firefox, same everything, no proiblem at all. So it's related to pref in my iMac and I don't know what because I didn't change anything recently. Really annoying because I need that feature very often.

  • Save As PDF causing browsers crash

I've used Safari, Firefox (1.0.7 and 1.5), Internet Explorer, and Mozilla and every time I select "save as PDF" a webpage in the Print feature, it resulted in a browser crash. Every time.
Have Apple addressed this persistently annoying bug already?
    Thanks.

Is there anything helpful in the Console's crash logs? Are you able to print to a printer from any of these browsers? Please provide as much detail as possible.

  • Unable to "save as pdf" using Excel

    Hi,
    This problem concerns SharePoint 2010
We have an issue with "save as PDF" option to the library on one particular site, it appears to work but the .PDF file never appears in the library.
We can save as PDF to the desktop then upload to the library.
Word will save as PDF to the same library without issue.
Would very much appreciate any ideas you might have or help you can give,
    Thanks,

If you are able to save as PDF from Word, but not from Excel, it could be a bug in Excel.
Have you checked to see if there are any Excel updates/patches that you do NOT have installed?  This kind of thing is usually fixed through a patch.
I trust that answers your question...
    Thanks
    C

  • Custom "Save as PDF" directly to a destination folder overwrites previously saved PDF files

Custom "Save as PDF" directly to a destination folder overwrites previously saved PDF files
As many of you will know, within Mac OSX it is possible to "print" any document off as a PDF.  You simply prepare your document then invoke the "Print" command and in the resulting print dialog box, click the "PDF" button in the bottom left corner which spills out a menu with various options including "Save as PDF..." as shown in the image below:
Selecting the last option "Edit Menu" permits users to add specific folders to which a PDF of the document will be saved.  As you will note from the image above, I have created a number of destinations such as "Bank Transfers" (for anything on screen in Safari I wish to preserve when using my on-line banking facility); "Bind" (which I use with an Automator workflow to consolidate many PDFs into one long document); "Officeworks" (for stuff I need to copy to a USB stick and have printed on on large plotters); "iPad" (for anything I need to put on my iPad through "iAnnotate" or "Documents") etc
The problem I have discovered is that with the introduction of Mountain Lion, PDFs that get saved directly to a destination folder get overwritten by later versions of PDFs that are produced from the same document.  This is fine when working on a single document that you may want to have the latest print of a document but not so when you produce many different PDFs from the same browser window in Safari as you surf through a number of websites etc.
Prior to Mountain Lion, pervious versions were never over-written but rather preserved them with new versions having version number suffixes added e.g., untitled.pdf, followed by untitled1.pdf, untitled2.pdf, untitled3.pdf etc.
Does anyone else have this problem?
Does anyone have a solution to this problem? (other than a workaround like switching to Finder to rename or move files around)

The "Save to Web Receipts" bug existed for a long time - here's a MacOSXHints article offering a workaround in 2007.  Here's another reference to it in 2009.  Your contention that:
Prior to Mountain Lion, pervious [sic] versions were never over-written.
    is, I'm afraid, wrong.
Apple fixed (worked around) that bug by using a .pdfworkflow, as I indicated.  As I also indicated, this file can't be opened with Automator (or I just don't know how, which is no great surprise ).  But it's the answer to your problems.
You can either wait for Apple to fix what is, admittedly, a huge bug in their PDF Services feature, or you can find a way of implementing the same fix they did for your own folders.
I should be doing the same, as I use PDF Services regularly, but I'm too lazy and have had too little success with Automator in general to give it a shot.  You may have more success than I did.
    Good luck

  • Save As PDF saves a blank pdf file

    Hi,
The save as pdf function used to save the the main part of a web page.
After the current update now the files created still have several pages, but they are all blank. No text visible.
Is this a bug or is something wrong with my setup?
This is on a Droid X with 2.3.3 (Gingerbread), FireFox 27.0
I love this function. I hope it can be fixed.
I wish this function was in the Desktop Browser too.

    Hi,
I've tried it on a couple of sites, both didn't work.
I've tried opening the pdf with qPDF Viewer, and Kindle, and on my desktop with Foxit Phantom.
Perhaps I didn't make this clear. I'm using the Menu/More/Save as PDF browser function. The browser is creating the PDF, it's not downloading the PDF from the website.
I've reverted back to the 23.0 version and it's all good again.
So even if the PDF is being created via a cloud service the problem is in the FireFox app.
If you want I can setup or find a test case for you.
    Update.
I got a few samples for you.
Apparently it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. This is with version 27.0. Version 23 always worked.
I supplied a screen-shot of https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/home and the resultant pdf; Products.pdf. Notice that is omits all styles.
Also, WordPress.com - Get a Free Blog Here.pdf is the home page of wordpress.com. Notice it's blank.
Also, The Mystic Sage Musings.pdf is missing styling. url: http://mystic-sage.com/blog/; also missing the heading picture, but it has the text.
However, the site I was originally having problems with; http://isiopolis.com/about/; comes out correct now. The pdf is: About Isiopolis _ Isiopolis.pdf
I tried to upload a zip files with the samples, but it won't let me.
You can get the zip file from here: http://gwsystemsdns.net/files/Samples.zip

  • Save a pdf?

I just started playing D&D with some friends. Instead of printing out our updated charactor sheets we have one friend (with a mac and adobe pro) save them as a pdf and email them to us.  I have the free adobe reader and when i try to save those sheets to file as a pdf, i can't and it bugs me.  I am using Window 7 OS. Is the save as pdf only a feature of the pro version?

How are you opening the PDF's?
If you are opening them in Reader (and they aren't opening in a browser) you should have File>Save As PDF.
If you are doing something else, tell us exactly what steps you are taking, what version on Reader and what exactly happens.

    Hi,
when i try to "save as pdf" an album i can't click to "Security Options..." button.  I think it is a Bug.

Marco, I tried on three different Macs - 2 MBPs, one iMac, this button "Security options" simply will not work with Aperture 3.4.5 and MacOS X 10.8.5.  The complete lower part of the !save! panel is unresponsive and trying to edit any of these entries causes beeping:

  • FM 10 and save as PDF/Distiller issue

OS: XP Pro sp3 and completely up to date.
Acrobat 9 Pro and up to date
Just installed FM10 (+ updated) and I also uninstalled Acrobat 5.
When users go to Save As PDF it tells them they must have Distiller v5.0 or later, it fails to recognise or utilize Distiller 9..
Trying to figure out a way to get it to work w/o reinstalling Acrobat.
    TIA!

If you take a look at the forum threads, you'll pick up pretty quickly that SaveAs PDF isn't really a recommended way to create a PDF because it has a long history of bugs.
To debug your current situation though, have you installed the Microsoft HotFix for all PostScript printers, including Distiller? This is the baseline for any PDF work on XP systems...
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=952909  (Gives details on the Hotfix)
    http://support.microsoft.com/Hotfix/KBHotfix.aspx?kbnum=952909&kbln=en-us  (Direct Download Link)
After that, can you Print to the Adobe PDF printer on your system? Both from other applications and from Frame (in Frame's Print box, check Generate Acrobat Data and uncheck Print To File)?

  • FM 10: FM crashes when I try to Save as PDF

I have TCS 3.0 installed on Windows 7, and have been trying to gen a PDF. In FM 7 and 8, I would always do a "Print Setup", followed by a Print Book (both in the File menu). However, in FM 10, I have tried to gen a PDF using the "Save as PDF" option, and Frame crashes every time. But when I try the Print Setup and then Print Book method, I have no problem gen'ing a PDF. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is there a solution, or is this a bug in Frame 10 or Acrobat X?
    Thanks for any enlightenment.

When I try to gen a PDF from a single chapter file, FM crashes. What is interesting is that I get slightly different dialog boxes when I use Save as PDF vs Print Book.
Save as PDF gives me this dialog, which has the options for "Generate PDF for review only" and "Convert CMYK Colors to RGB".
However, when I click File > Print Book > PDF Setup..., the dialog looks like this (see below). It does not have the 2 options that the prior dialog does.

  • Save as pdf does not include images on my kindle fire

am i missing some obvious way to access a setting?

I created a sample PDF and viewed it in Adobe Reader on a phone. 5 of the images display normally, while 4 show as black boxes. Are you seeing something similar?
Investigating further, the 5 that converted as expected were .png images, and the 4 that failed were .jpg images. Hmmm...
Edit: On a page with a JPEG background image, the entire page is black except for the form controls (search box and search button). Not useful.
Edit #2: I posted a bug with my examples: [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=758893 Bug 758893 – Save As PDF renders JPEGs as black rectangles (Android 2.3.4 / HTC)].
