Save as PDF (compatibility option)

Still a bloody newby at Illustrator...
I often need to save an AI document as PDF to send it on to someone.  There is always that panel that asks for Compatibility level and Options.
The Compatibility default is always 'Acrobat 6 (PDF 1.5)'.  I have no need for backwards compatibility, so I always change it to 'Acrobat 8 (PDF 1.7)'.
Question: is there a way to make PDF 1.7 the default in Illustrator?  I have checked all the Preferences, but cannot find such an option.
As always - thank you in advance for your kind advice!

Of course!  I knew it must be something simple...
Thank you very much

I get this message when I am trying to save a file that was done in CS4, now using  CS6 "Cannot save the file as the font "ArmenianLSU-italic" could not be embedded because of licensing restrictions. Turn off the pdf compatibility option and try again." Even if I start a new file I unable to save it with this font. I need to use this font.

Then you need to outline all text before savng the PDF.
Make sure you do this on a copy of the file.

  • Can I change the Default Save as PDF compatibility?

The default for the save as pdf is Acrobat 6. Problem just started of my artboards not translating correctly in the PDF. Preview of the document is also very strange. Saved PDF will open correctly in Ai, but not in anything else including Acrobat and Apple Preview. Changing the compatibility to 8 fixes problem.
I get that I can make a custom preset, action or script, but I really would like to just keep it simple if possible.

Ok. I might have been a bit too sure the Illustrator Default existed. It might be inside the application. But it is possible that the Standard.joboption is the one that appears as Illustrator Default. If you save a new one try to replace that one. Standard is the only one that does not appear in the drop down menu under its name.
The pdf job settings that have brackets around them are kept on the mac at: /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe PDF/Settings/Standard.joboptions That is in the Library on your hard disk, not the ~/Library inside your Home area.
The Illustrator Default job setting has settings like in the Compression area to use no downsampling. That means that if you place a 200 MB file into Illustrator it will be 200MB in the pdf. Downsampling takes any resolution above the inserted setting down to reduce the size of the pdf. Just to warn you.
    Hope this helps you some.
(At my work I have to constantly use different pdf settings so I make custom settings to prevent mistakes when changing the settings every time. So I have one that has bleeding and trim and high resolution, one that is for low resolution and no bleeding or trim marks some for rgb workflow and others for cmyk workflow. )

  • V31 save as pdf tools option disappeared

got upgraded to ff android 31 and saw that tools menu item 'save as pdf' had disappeared. manually downgraded to vn 30 and option was there. Therefore I presume disappearance was related to version upgrade - however I see no mention of this specific issue in firefox buglist or elsewhere

    thanks for your feedback, rob.
imyself am just a normal user like you, so i cannot influence the process by which the release notes or other version specific documentation is created, but i will escalate your reply so that an employee from mozilla will take a look at it.

  • Root Account - No 'save as pdf' print option

The root account doesn't have the print option to 'save as PDF'. My other user accounts do have that option.
Any suggestions on how to enable the 'save as PDF' option for an account or if something special is needed for the root account?
    -tjw

I log in as root because I don't like having to fiddle with permissions. For example I installed wireshark and it wasn't allowed to capture packets from the network interface because it needed special permissions. Even though the account I was using was a sys admin account I still needed log in as root; change permissions somewhere.
I decided that I would just log in as root. Yeah yeah its so very dangerous...no its not.
But; now that there are these little goofy things like so 'save as pdf' button forcing me to click 5 times to to the save as a pdf option under the preview button I may go back to a vanilla sys admin account.

  • PDF compatibility options

Anybody know how to adjust the settings used when creating a PDF compatible .ai file? Is it even possible?
I'm thinking that the resolutions could be adjusted to lower the file size. There is information in the PDF compatible format that we need, but decent resolution isn't one of them.
Thanks for saving me "gobs" of saving time.

Connect to the internet, start your Illustrator, press F1 and read a help file. You also can open it as a pdf and save or find in your computer by it's name: illustrator_cs4_help.pdf

    Customize PDF presets
1Choose Edit > Adobe PDF Presets.
    2Do one of the following:
•To create a new preset, click New. If you want to base the new preset on an existing preset, select the preset first.
•To edit an existing custom preset, select the preset and click Edit. (You cannot edit the default presets.)
•To delete a preset, select it and click Delete.
•To save a preset in a location other than the default Settings folder in the Adobe PDF folder, select it and click Save As. Specify a location and click Save.
3Set the PDF options, and click OK.
Alternatively, you can create a custom preset when you save a PDF file by clicking Save Preset at the bottom of the Save Adobe PDF dialog box.
If you want to share your presets with a colleague, select one or more presets and click Export. The presets are saved to a separate .joboptions file, which you can then transfer to your colleague via e-mail or over your computer network.

  • Word 2007 - Save as Pdf gives error - This file is in use by another application or user

I have MS Office 2007 Small Business.
For months I have been using the "Save as PDF/XPS" option to save my word documents as PDF files.
All of a sudden, when I click on the publish button within the "save as PDF dialog", I get the error:
"This file is in use by another application or user."
    - I have tried creating a new word document and I still get this error when I try to save-as pdf.
    - I have tried opening a document that previously was able to be saved-as-a-pdf, and it no longer works either.
    - I have tried saving from other office applications (excel, powerpoint) that also get errors now.
I have not personally installed any new software that I recall between when this worked and stopped working for me.
As far as I can tell there have been no updates explicitly for save-as-pdf in office.
Is anyone else seeing this problem all-of-a-sudden?
    Thanks.
    jlk

I just encountered this problem while trying to save a pdf from Excel 2007.  I had recently updated to Adobe Reader 9.1.
I received the same error message you're reporting here when I went to Word 2007 and tried to save a pdf file from it as well.
    I uninstalled Adobe Reader 9.1.
Reinstalled the Office 2007 pdf plug-in
Successfully created pdf files from word and from Excel (which is what I needed to do in the first place).
I then reinstalled Adobe Reader 9.1 so I could read the PDF files I had just created in Excel and word.
I then tried to create pdf files from word and excel.  Error messages are back and I'm unable to create pdf's from word or excel.
So.. why does Office 2007 pdf plugin not work when Adobe Reader 9.1 is installed?
Frankly I'm getting tired of uninstalling Adobe Reader 9.1 every time I need to create a pdf file in Word or Excel.

  • Save as PDF option in MS Word 2007 does not create TOC links

    Hello All,
i am using Microsoft Office Word 2007 to create How to Guides, Installation Manuals, and other technical documents. I send these documents to customer in PDF format.
When i use "Save as PDF" option of MS Word 2007 to generate PDF file, it creates the PDF but without TOC links. TOC entries are there but hyperlinks are missing.
Can anyone please provide me a solution to work around this issue.

    Hi,
It seems that you are trying to insert a Hyperlink in you document which you want to save as a PDF file from Word 2007,
but when you open the PDF file there is no such a Hyperlink but only the website address.
If there is anything misunderstanding, please feel free to let me know.
    Try this:
When you have inputted the website address, enter an “Space” or “Enter” behind it to make it
turn into a Hyperlink before you save the document into PDF file.
    Sincerely,
    Fangfang

  • Save as PDF and Save PDF as PostScript options in the Printer dialog are not supported.

I downloaded Indesign CS3 trial and liked everything about it until I attempted to print to postscript and got that message. Nothing I have tried has helped. I have seen in various forums that others are having the same problem, but haven't found any solution offered. I am running Tiger 10.4.10 on a new Intel Imac with 3G ram. This is a procedure I use very often in my workflow, and have never had this problem with CS2 on my PC or other Macs. Is there a solution? I downloaded the .1 update and installed that and it didn't change anything.

    PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME.
Its the first time Im using print booklet option to save my file. I have the same problem when trying to save as pdf and get the
"The Save as PDF and Save PDF as PostScript options in the Printer dialog are not supported."
I'm trying to save a .pdf of a booklet of a facing pages document of A4 size each facing page for a whole size A3, then hope to let the pages be correctly arranged by inDesing, then print and staple.
Meaning pages will be like this - Page #60 left side [of the A3] - page #1 right side [of the A3] , page # 2 right side[of the A3] - page #59 left side[of the A3] etc...
I CANT DO IT. I tried to follow Melvin Thompson , but when I choose save .ps and open it in preview all I see is independent a4 pages and just the left ones , .. How can I save my file as .pdf ready to be printed in a3 ?
    I really appreciate any help.

  • The Save as PDF option in the Printer dialog is not supported.

My client is asking me to save a separations PDF file. But whenever I save it to PDF, a this message pops out: The Save as PDF option in the Printer dialog is not supported. I'm using InDesign cs5 and Adobe PDF 9.0. I'm on Mac OS X 10.6.6.

I adobe acrobat 7.0 professional. When I open or save a PDF it reverts to Adobe Reader XI. How can I change that to the pro as it has far more editing options.

You may want to keep Reader. You may want to select Acrobat as your default, but be able to click on a PDF (or PDF link) to open in Reader when needed. There are likely some PDFs that will not open correctly in AA 7 because of new features folks add. Just because it opens in Reader XI does not mean it is in the new format, but just that is the default opening you have. To tell the type of file, you have to open the PDF and check the properties (ctrl-D) and check Description>PDF version.

  • Save a pdf to iPhoto option gone for good?

You used to be able to save a pdf file to iphoto when you would print a document and in the left hand corner where there is a pdf option box, you could save your document as a pdf into iphoto, making it a .jpg file automatically.
This feature is not available in OS X Lion anymore that I can tell.
DO NOT BUY OS X LION!  It's a joke.

Like they said thanks rbii, I've never used Automator and never used the slideshow from a Book.  Great
It would be nice to copy out the photos I've used to create the book into an album so one can use them for the full slideshow or into iMovie - I think one use to be able to do that pre-Lion.
But this was great to know - making slideshows can just absorb so much of your life !
    Thanks JJ

  • Save as pdf option doesn't work

I'm running OS X 10.3.9 and MS Word 2004. Whenever I try to use the new option in the Print dialog "Save as pdf" the button is always greyed out. I've gone through all of my on-line help options and can't find any help with how to make this work. Do any of you know why my "Save as pdf" option isn't available?
    Thanks!
    Peg

    Peg,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Make sure that you have a PDF Services folder in both of these locations:
    1. Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/PDF Services
    2. Macintosh HD/Library/PDF Services
If the PDF Services folder is missing from either of these locations, create a new folder, name it PDF Services, and place it in the missing location.

  • Can't access "Overprint & Transparency Flattening" Options in Save As PDF Dialogue.

    I really need help here.
Because of printer driver issues, I've lately been forced to outline/flatten all of my text in my PDFs so that we can print them in the office. Since installing the latest update however, I'm now unable to access the "custom" settings for doing so in the Save As PDF dialogue. Specifically AFTER choosing a 1.3 PDF in which said custom menu should become available. (see attached image).
The .ai's save fine, but I need to be able to send this out to coworkers as 1.3 PDFs so that they can properly print them, and again, this inability to access the custom Overprint & Transparency options has never been an issue. The files vary in complexity, but are all relatively tame on elements.
I'm using Mac OSX 10.9.5, Illustrator CC.
I can provide whatever other information might be needed to solve this problem, but can provide sample files (this is happening with all files now).
Thank you so much for your help.

If your document does not have any overprints or transparency the options will be greyed out.  Try adding a drop shadow effect, or turning an time to over in the attributes panel as a test.
