Save as PDF in Print / Fax / 10.3.9 Panther

Hi all,
I am stuck on a problem. I can't get my emac to show "save as PDF" in anything but Grey on my print window. I trashed com.apple.print.custompresets.plist from a forum I found, nice group by the way.I have also ran repair disc permissions in my disc utility several times. I ran a search to make sure I did not have com.apple.print.custompresets.plist anywhere else. Any help would be wonderful. Maybe it means nothing , but I can't burn CD's either.
Thanks
Macintex

Hi Macintex
Thanks for posting a new topic.
Trashing the com.apple.print.custompresets.plist is the only trick I know.
Is the inability to Save as PDF universal or just affects one application like Word or Appleworks?
Is it when using Safari when you trying to Save as Pdf ?
your write
Maybe it means nothing , but I can't burn CD's either
I don't see Print related to that no, except print problems and optical burner problems are most fickle, almost idiosyncratic.
Back to Print: merely to extend the *plist idea, have you tried trashing the other com.apple.print...(various) plist files?

  • TURBOTAX 2014 CD DOES NOT PERMIT OFFLINE PRINT OR SAVE TO PDF.  YOU CAN ONLY SAVE TO PDF OR PRINT IF ONLINE.  BIG SECURITY ISSUE.  INTUIT IN WSJ ARTICLE BLAMES APPLE, SAYING APP STORE SOFTWARE RESULTED IN THIS.  TRUE?

    Starting this year, Turbotax CD/download versions will not permit people to print tax forms when offline. If you try to print while not connected to the Internet, you receive the warning “There was a problem connecting to Intuit’s Secure Print Service.  Please check your Internet connection or try again later.”  Indeed, Paragraph 9 of the Intuit Software End User License Agreement states:  "You may save your return as a PDF file and understand it may be processed on Intuit servers, not as part of the Software."
    Even if you wish to protect your data by not exposing it to the Internet, Turbotax will not let you without sharing your entire return first with them.  They prohibit you from only printing locally on home, cable-connected printers.
    The result of this is that people who tried to be safe by never going online with tax data, are this year being forced by Intuit software to expose all their sensitive tax information files to the Internet and Intuit print server, even though they do not wish to. Turbotax is putting you at risk.
    On Feb 19 the Wall Street Journal quoted an Intuit spokesperson blaming Apple:  According to Julie Miller, an Intuit spokeswoman, TurboTax made the change “because the Mac product requires a special, third-party code library to support offline printing.” And she says, “based on Apple App Store guidelines, we could no longer distribute the third-party library with our software.”   She said the change in the TurboTax Mac software was first made for 2013 tax returns, but last year customers had the option of printing returns without being connected to the Internet.
    So is Apple to blame that I now have to expose my sensitive tax data to Intuit just to be allowed to save to PDF on my hard disk?  And it's all Apple's fault?
    Can anyone clarify this?

    Thank you for this an the other posts.  Particularly for Barney,
    I have just discovered that Turbotax actually permits you to print (and save to PDF) documents from the Help
    Center built into the program, even when you are OFFLINE.  Works just like normal printing is supposed to.  It just won't let you print actual tax forms. So I guess they were willing to violate Apple’s rules when you print information from their help center offline, but you just can't do the same with your own tax forms.  Clearly this shows that what Intuit told Forbes was a fabrication.
    They do in fact have the proper code in the program for printing and saving to PDF.  They just deny you usage of that code for printing your tax returns, which they want to copy.  I don’t think there can be any doubt about what they are doing.  Surely they are not deceiving apple by allowing the limited print function?
    We can only hope that a brave journalist will challenge them on this, since Intuit will not respond to customers.
    Thank you for any views on this points.

  • Can I save as pdf when printing from a Java applet on a webpage in Safari?

    I am trying to use a webpage that is running a Java applet. A dialog comes up that asks me, "Do you want to run this application?" The dialog also says, "This application will run with limited access that is intended to protect your computer and personal information." I select "Run". The applet generates an image I want to print.  There is a "Print" button on the applet.  I select "Print". A Security Warning dialog comes up that says, "The applet has requested access to the printer. Do you want to allow this action?" I select "OK".  The Print dialog comes up.  I choose the PDF button in the lower left corner. I choose "Save as PDF...". A second Print dialog comes up.  I input a title in the Save As box.  I choose Desktop in the Where box.  I do not change anything else and select the "Save" button. A dialog appears that says, "Print Error while printing." There is an icon with paper, a pencil, a ruler and a paintbrush on the dialog.
    Is this an issue with Apple and Java security?  Does "run with limited access" mean I can't print and save as PDF? Should I upgrade to Mavericks?  It seems like others have not been happy with Mavericks and have had problems saving as PDF with Mavericks. How do I let Apple know about this error?  The error dialog is useless.
    I am on a Mac running OS X 10.8.5 and Safari 6.1.2.  My Java version is 7 update 51.
    What other information can I provide to help solve the problem (if it can be solved)?
    Thank you for your help!

  • Saving iCal as PDF...don't have Save As PDF in Print drop down

    Can someone help me figure out how to save iCal as PDF?  I read the thread about saving as PDF in the print drop down however I don't have "save as PDF" anywhere in the iCal print drop down.  Am I just blind ?:)
    thanks

    You should find Export... in both the File menu and the Share menu.
    For PDF, you may find it simpler to go through the Print dialogue:
    Press command-P to open the dialogue,
    Choose one of the options in the menu of the PDF button at lower left of the dialogue,

  • JasperReports - how to save as PDF from Print Preview page?

    Hi all!
    How can I save reports created with JasperReperts (with iReport tool) as PDF?
    On print preview, when I select it is as PDF, and click on "save", nothing is saved. Also, I get NoClassDefFoundError despite I included all nessesry classes (did I?). Here are list of included classes
    jasperreports-1.2.7.jar;
    jasperreports-1.2.7-javaflow.jar;
    commons-beanutils-1.5.jar;
    commons-collections-2.1.jar;
    commons-logging-1.0.2.jar;
    commons-digester-1.7.jar;Here is my code:
    void printWithPreview() {
        try {
          JasperPrint print = JasperFillManager.fillReport(report, reportParam, conn);
          JasperViewer.viewReport(print, false);
          //byte[] pdfasbytes = JasperExportManager.exportReportToPdf(print); // can I use it somehow?
          JasperExportManager.exportReportToPdf(print);
        } catch (JRException e) {
          e.printStackTrace();
      }Can you help me with this?
    Also, I need to know, how to limit options "save as" only to PFD (on same Print Preview page)?
    Thank you in advance!

    Right!
    I was missing iText.jar.
    So, you need only this code to get report preview and feature to export to pdf, html and other formats:
    void printWithPreview() {
        try {
          JasperPrint print = JasperFillManager.fillReport(report, reportParam, conn);
          JasperViewer.viewReport(print, false);
          JasperExportManager.exportReportToPdf(print);
        } catch (JRException e) {
          e.printStackTrace();
      }You do not need to save it specificly to c: or other "hard coded" directory.
    Thanx 1000 times!!!

  • Framemaker 12, Save as PDF and Print PDF Not working...

    We are using Framemaker 12 version 12.0.3.424, it tells me it is the latest patch level, and the issue we are having is that it won't either save as or print to PDF, both options are failing, they start up and then go to a certain point and come up as "not responding" and then just stops. I have managed to get a postscript file on two occasions that got 141 pages out of 1400+. I have gone through a bunch of the threads here and made sure that I have changed Adobe PDF printer to the default and deselected the box about using the specific fonts, still nothing. We are also using Adobe Acrobat XI Standard, and that is now up to the latest patch level as well. I am running out of things to try in order to get this full book put together and ready for delivery. If anyone has any additional things to try that would be great. One thing I feel might be an issue is that some of the files seem to be using a different font, "Times" vs. "Times New Roman", Frame automatically substitutes it, so was wondering if that is the issue.
    Any and all assistance will be great on this.

    > .ps file was running about 57,000kb
    Then you aren't anywhere near a 32-bit file size constraint.
    > We are running 64 bit machines here, though the program I think is the 32 bit version.
    Pretty much all CPUs are 64-bit now. What matters is the OS version, and Win7 and 8 installs are commonly 64-bit these days. FM may not even have specific 32- or 64-bit installs. I've tested FM9 on Win7/64 for file size limits, and it sails past 4GB with no problems.
    > ... stops everytime on one particular page, that has was is an OLE linked .vsd file in it.
    As if the world needed another reason to never ever use OLE for anything anywhere, esp. in Framemaker. Export that object in a stable graphical file format (PDF should work). Import that.

  • PDFs created from Save As PDF when Printing?

    I a m working in QuarkXPress 6.5, creating a business card using PMS colors and CMYK tifs. When I "Save As a PDF…" from the Print dialog box, I think everything is okay. Then I send it to a printing company and they double-check the image and say it is a RGB, not CMYK, And also, the fonts print as outlines, causing the characters to spread. They are using a PC & Adobe Acrobat to check the files. I need help — fast!!
    Mac Intel Duo Core Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   printers are Epson CX4200 & HP 5000

    Hi JackieDesigns2,
    I always tell people to make the PDF with the end result in mind. If you're wanting to "print" the PDF, then make the PDF CMYK and not RGB. This goes for sending the resulting PDF to another printer or whatever.
    Here's a link to help you with the settings:
    http://www.aapg.org/advertise/AAPGPDFSettings.pdf
    The PDF X-1a specification forces all fonts to embedd, CMYK color space, no ICC profiles, no transparency and some other little goodies made for printing everyone can go by.
    I will say that while many applications have their own why to "make" a PDF, the best, most consistant method is to make a postscript file and distill the postscript file.
    Keep in mind that programs that write postscript, write (or speak) postscript with different dialect's so-to-speak. Some interpeters can understand the common dialect where it cannot understand others. This is why some app's are more problematic than others in making good postscript.
    Quark writes fairly clean postscript (or used to), distilling your files from Quark should work well.

  • Save as PDF from Print - corrupted file ?

    I have been saving to PDF copies of the same web page since 2010.  I've only just realised that all the files saved since December 2012 have been corrupted in some way.  They are all viewable and will print normally but, the Find function in Preview cannot find any text within those files (not even a single letter).  Similarly, Spotlight cannot find any text in those files.
    If I double-click on a word in one of those files, only the nearest letter is selected.  I can copy text from these files but, when I paste that text into another application, I get unprintable characters.  They are all ASCII 252.  If I copy and paste from the web page (instead of the saved PDF), I get normal text.
    It looks to me that the Quartz renderer is corrupting all text in the print to PDF function.  The change occurred between 22/12/12 and 5/1/13 when I upgraded from OS X 10.6.8 to 10.8.2.  So, I think the bug was introduced in either 10.7, 10.8.1 or 10.8.2.  I'm now using 10.10.1.
    Has anyone encountered this issue ?
    Thanks.

    YES!!!!!!!
    I was pulling my hair out last night over this. I noticed the Find function was not working properly. I KNEW there was something in the PDF and Preview was not showing it. I spent 2 hours trying to find someone with a similar Find function problem, but could not find much. Also, it could not copy and paste text. I KNOW it worked before because I had taken notes on this particular PDF and had copy and pasted whole paragraphs for myself into Pages. Which is what got me searching online tonight.
    I re-downloaded the same PDF. When first opened in Preview, the Find and copy/paste functions worked. Same thing in Acrobat reader and Acrobat Pro. After confirming this, I re-opened it in Preview, highlighted some text and closed. It asked to Save Changes and I did. I immediately re-opened it, and guess what? Find no longer works and neither does copy/paste. Just to be sure, I tried re-opening in Acrobat reader and Pro; same thing. No copy/paste, corrupted Find feature. Well, copy/paste sort of functions, its just that it pastes a square with an alien head in it that says "Private Use 100000 Plane 16".
    And finally, on some PDFs that have not even been saved in Preview, the Find function is not working properly also. It happened on the re-downloaded PDF I just talked about. It finds many instances of the word, bit the left and right arrows next to "Found on X# Pages are greyed out and do not move through the document. Once I go to the left pane that displays page thumbnails and click on a few different ones, THEN it starts working.
    So yes, Apple, Preview is corrupting PDF files upon save, AND it is not working properly on other files. Please fix this. PLEASE.
    And my specs are the same as Gary; iMac 27 inch Late 2009, Yosemite 10.10.1. Is ANYONE else having this issue with a different Mac?

  • Save as PDF from printer dialog requires two tries

    When trying to save a file as a PDF from the printer dialog it takes two tries. When the save dialog appears I hit return and it immediately returns with nothing saved. The second time the file is saved normally. According to Adobe this is being caused by Apple PDF Creator; however my selected printer is Adobe PDF 9.0. I have retried resetting the printer using the System Preferences panel with no change. This is really annoying, any suggestions?

    Thank you. I would go back to Adobe and reiterate that this doesn't happen when a non-Adobe printer is active. They are probably not setting something up correctly the first time through. Also, unless AdobePDF offers something crucial when creating PDFs, you could switch the printer as a workaround.

  • Stupid PDF Question:  What's the difference between "Save As PDF" and Printing to a PDF "printer"?

    Is there a quality difference?
    The "Save As" seems to run Distiller, but if I select "Print Document" and select "Adobe PDF" as the printer, it also seems to work OK, although I sometimes get a "Times" font not available, will be replaced by "Times New Roman", even though I can't find any reference to "times" in my book.
    Is there an advantage to running Distiller?
    Thanks!
    John
    www.controlgeek.net

    > Is there a quality difference?
    I'd expect them (as well as print-to-Ps & Distill) to be the same for the same settings.
    We print to Ps & Distill, for several reasons, not all of which may apply to you:
    More control. Distilling provides menus for everything Adobe lets you control in PDF gen. Print/SaveAs may not (and don't in our environment).
    Faster printing (Frame doesn't have to wait for the tps to pdf gen). You can get back to work while a long job renders.
    Unequal versions/different platforms. We author on FM8/Unix and Distill on Acro9/PC.
    > ... although I sometimes get a "Times" font not available, will be replaced by "Times New Roman", even though I can't find any reference to "times" in my book.
    Save the component files to MIF and examine with a plaintext editor. If not found, the font invocation is probably coming in with a text inset, or a graphic of type DWG, DXF, EPS, PDF or possibly SVG.

  • Samsung 1630w won't save as pdf

    After all the hassles with 10.5 and an hp1012, I just got a Samsung ML1630W. It is wireless, set up with airport (11g) no problems. But it won't save as pdf (in print). It says go to file>save. I hate to jinks a new printer that works, but it seems apple released samsung drivers when leopard came out. I was wondering if this might work. I think this printer is a newer model, though. Any ideas or work arounds.

    Oh, probably just a distiller hiccup. Glad to hear it works now. I have had my share of Adobe background processes problems, too, and I wouldn't have thought to reboot right away either. Make sure to mark this question 'answered' when you get a chance.

  • Save as pdf deleted bookmarks when combining pdf-files

    Hello,
    when I save several books each to a pdf-file with save as pdf (or printing to .ps and converting afterwards), the bookmarks are deleted when I combine the pdf-files with Acrobat. Only one bookmark for the 1st. file exists in the new pdf-file.
    The reference of the bookmarks in the original generated file is e.g. "g3.619626".
    These references are not anymore available in the combined files.
    I've tried several settings before saving as pdf but nothing helped.
    Ther are no problems of combining ordinary pdf-files with bookmarks if they are generated by other programs then Framemaker.
    I need to combine files as well within a book, as "save to pdf" is not able, to generate one file with different pages sizes. I then need to generate a separate pdf-file of the pages with the for e.g. bigger page size and combine it afterwards.
    In that project I'm working there will over all something between 1000 and 1500 pages from maybe 10 books with hunderts of bookmarks plus additionally separete pfd files to combine. So it's not an option to treat every bookmark before combining the pdf-files.
    My system is FM11.02.384 / Acrobat Pro 11.0.3 / Windows 7 64 Bit

    Never having had a need to do it, and Adobe documentation for Acrobat being what it is, I can't tell if AcroPro is supposed to be able to merge bookmarks when merging PDFs. It would be an unsurprising feature, and you do say it works on PDFs generated by means other than FM.
    Here's a hack that might work, if the variable-page-size rendering turns out to be out of reach. You can batch* this.
    Open each component PDF and re-save it with some otherwise harmless optimization (or even none). This will probably cause AcroPro to re-write the internal structures of each PDF, which might then be amenable to merged bookmarks when you re-open them for merging.
    * We do a similar thing for a slightly different problem. We have a software-in-a-box XML publishing app that, at just some seats, is generating PDFs that are tagged for byte serving (fast web view), but are not in fact encoded for it. This causes AcroReader plugin and entire browser crashes for web end users. The s/w vendor can't even tell us where the option is for controlling that feature, because they get the PDF gen code from some other 3rd party. So we routinely batch process all generated PDFs, with, oddly enough, NO "commands" selected. The re-save alone fixes it.

  • FM 10: FM crashes when I try to Save as PDF

    I have TCS 3.0 installed on Windows 7, and have been trying to gen a PDF. In FM 7 and 8, I would always do a "Print Setup", followed by a Print Book (both in the File menu). However, in FM 10, I have tried to gen a PDF using the "Save as PDF" option, and Frame crashes every time. But when I try the Print Setup and then Print Book method, I have no problem gen'ing a PDF. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is there a solution, or is this a bug in Frame 10 or Acrobat X?
    Thanks for any enlightenment.

    When I try to gen a PDF from a single chapter file, FM crashes. What is interesting is that I get slightly different dialog boxes when I use Save as PDF vs Print Book.
    Save as PDF gives me this dialog, which has the options for "Generate PDF for review only" and "Convert CMYK Colors to RGB".
    However, when I click File > Print Book > PDF Setup..., the dialog looks like this (see below). It does not have the 2 options that the prior dialog does.

    Browse to a photo in the gallery, select print and the print setting dialog appears, but no option to print.  only save to PDF.  When I try to go ahead and let it save, to see if it will let me print after, it fails.  What am I missing here?

    Hi,
    The HP Laserjet Pro M127 is not supported by the HP All-In-One Remote app, therefore it won't allow printing to the printer, as you may find listed within the HP Consumer LaserJet printers section:

    Here is an article from Adobe:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/exporting-publishing-pdf.html
    Export an open document to PDF for printing
    Choose File > Export.
    Specify a name and location for the file.
    For Save As Type (Windows) or Format (Mac OS), choose Adobe PDF (Print), and then click Save.
    When you select the Adobe PDF (Print) option, you cannot include interactive elements in the PDF. To export an interactive document to PDF, see Create interactive documents for PDF.
    Do one of the following:
    To use a predefined set of job options, choose a preset from the Adobe PDF Preset menu.To create a PDF/X file, either choose a PDF/X preset from the Adobe PDF Preset menu, or choose a predefined PDF/X format from the Standard menu.To customize options, select a category from the list on the left and then set the options.
    For Compatibility, choose the lowest PDF version necessary to open the files you create.
    Click Export (Windows) or Save (Mac OS).
    To reset options to the default, in the Export Adobe PDF dialog box, hold down Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) and click Reset. (The Cancel button changes to Reset.)
