Save as PDF "Printing"

It seems that the native "Save as PDF" function under printing defaults to saving my documents in the application folder. I would like to set a specific folder in my documents as the target folder for all of these PDFs to be saved. I cannot seem to find how to set the default target for the Save PDF function. Can someone point me to where this is in the system? Thanks in advance

Make an alias to the folder where you want to save inside of your PDF Services folder (either your user or in the main Library folder). Name the alias whatever you want, like "Save PDF to this Folder."
You can quickly create an alias by dragging the folder to the PDF Services folder while holding down both command and option keys.

  • Root Account - No 'save as pdf' print option

The root account doesn't have the print option to 'save as PDF'. My other user accounts do have that option.
Any suggestions on how to enable the 'save as PDF' option for an account or if something special is needed for the root account?
    -tjw

I log in as root because I don't like having to fiddle with permissions. For example I installed wireshark and it wasn't allowed to capture packets from the network interface because it needed special permissions. Even though the account I was using was a sys admin account I still needed log in as root; change permissions somewhere.
I decided that I would just log in as root. Yeah yeah its so very dangerous...no its not.
But; now that there are these little goofy things like so 'save as pdf' button forcing me to click 5 times to to the save as a pdf option under the preview button I may go back to a vanilla sys admin account.

  • Aio remote only allows save to pdf when trying to print picture

brand new HPm MFP M127 fw.  have web services enabled and all the other stuff noted in the printer installation.  Installed aio remote on galaxy s3 with droid 4.4.2.  went ahead and installed HP print services from GP as well.
Browse to a photo in the gallery, select print and the print setting dialog appears, but no option to print.  only save to PDF.  When I try to go ahead and let it save, to see if it will let me print after, it fails.  What am I missing here?

    Hi,
The HP Laserjet Pro M127 is not supported by the HP All-In-One Remote app, therefore it won't allow printing to the printer, as you may find listed within the HP Consumer LaserJet printers section:

  • Save As Dialog not responding - PDF Printer

Whenever I try and print to the PDF printer, (If preferences are set to prompt for file name) the "Save As " dialog locks up. The only way to clear this is to stop the Acrotray.exe. process.
I have tried changing the printer preferences, but the only options that I can get to work are:
    Prompt for Adobe PDF filename
    Documents\*.pdf
I I use the browse to point to a different location, when I save the setting, exit and then go back to check it, it has reset to Prompt.

to make things clearer a screenshot of the dialog I'm talking about. this happens everywhere such a generic save file dialog appears.

  • TURBOTAX 2014 CD DOES NOT PERMIT OFFLINE PRINT OR SAVE TO PDF.  YOU CAN ONLY SAVE TO PDF OR PRINT IF ONLINE.  BIG SECURITY ISSUE.  INTUIT IN WSJ ARTICLE BLAMES APPLE, SAYING APP STORE SOFTWARE RESULTED IN THIS.  TRUE?

Starting this year, Turbotax CD/download versions will not permit people to print tax forms when offline. If you try to print while not connected to the Internet, you receive the warning “There was a problem connecting to Intuit’s Secure Print Service.  Please check your Internet connection or try again later.”  Indeed, Paragraph 9 of the Intuit Software End User License Agreement states:  "You may save your return as a PDF file and understand it may be processed on Intuit servers, not as part of the Software."
Even if you wish to protect your data by not exposing it to the Internet, Turbotax will not let you without sharing your entire return first with them.  They prohibit you from only printing locally on home, cable-connected printers.
The result of this is that people who tried to be safe by never going online with tax data, are this year being forced by Intuit software to expose all their sensitive tax information files to the Internet and Intuit print server, even though they do not wish to. Turbotax is putting you at risk.
On Feb 19 the Wall Street Journal quoted an Intuit spokesperson blaming Apple:  According to Julie Miller, an Intuit spokeswoman, TurboTax made the change “because the Mac product requires a special, third-party code library to support offline printing.” And she says, “based on Apple App Store guidelines, we could no longer distribute the third-party library with our software.”   She said the change in the TurboTax Mac software was first made for 2013 tax returns, but last year customers had the option of printing returns without being connected to the Internet.
So is Apple to blame that I now have to expose my sensitive tax data to Intuit just to be allowed to save to PDF on my hard disk?  And it's all Apple's fault?
    Can anyone clarify this?

Thank you for this an the other posts.  Particularly for Barney,
I have just discovered that Turbotax actually permits you to print (and save to PDF) documents from the Help
Center built into the program, even when you are OFFLINE.  Works just like normal printing is supposed to.  It just won't let you print actual tax forms. So I guess they were willing to violate Apple’s rules when you print information from their help center offline, but you just can't do the same with your own tax forms.  Clearly this shows that what Intuit told Forbes was a fabrication.
They do in fact have the proper code in the program for printing and saving to PDF.  They just deny you usage of that code for printing your tax returns, which they want to copy.  I don’t think there can be any doubt about what they are doing.  Surely they are not deceiving apple by allowing the limited print function?
We can only hope that a brave journalist will challenge them on this, since Intuit will not respond to customers.
Thank you for any views on this points.

  • Can I save as pdf when printing from a Java applet on a webpage in Safari?

I am trying to use a webpage that is running a Java applet. A dialog comes up that asks me, "Do you want to run this application?" The dialog also says, "This application will run with limited access that is intended to protect your computer and personal information." I select "Run". The applet generates an image I want to print.  There is a "Print" button on the applet.  I select "Print". A Security Warning dialog comes up that says, "The applet has requested access to the printer. Do you want to allow this action?" I select "OK".  The Print dialog comes up.  I choose the PDF button in the lower left corner. I choose "Save as PDF...". A second Print dialog comes up.  I input a title in the Save As box.  I choose Desktop in the Where box.  I do not change anything else and select the "Save" button. A dialog appears that says, "Print Error while printing." There is an icon with paper, a pencil, a ruler and a paintbrush on the dialog.
Is this an issue with Apple and Java security?  Does "run with limited access" mean I can't print and save as PDF? Should I upgrade to Mavericks?  It seems like others have not been happy with Mavericks and have had problems saving as PDF with Mavericks. How do I let Apple know about this error?  The error dialog is useless.
I am on a Mac running OS X 10.8.5 and Safari 6.1.2.  My Java version is 7 update 51.
What other information can I provide to help solve the problem (if it can be solved)?
    Thank you for your help!

You cna do this with the security options in the PDF file itself, which you can set with Adobe Acrobat, assuming you have access to the security options in the first place.

  • Framemaker 12, Save as PDF and Print PDF Not working...

We are using Framemaker 12 version 12.0.3.424, it tells me it is the latest patch level, and the issue we are having is that it won't either save as or print to PDF, both options are failing, they start up and then go to a certain point and come up as "not responding" and then just stops. I have managed to get a postscript file on two occasions that got 141 pages out of 1400+. I have gone through a bunch of the threads here and made sure that I have changed Adobe PDF printer to the default and deselected the box about using the specific fonts, still nothing. We are also using Adobe Acrobat XI Standard, and that is now up to the latest patch level as well. I am running out of things to try in order to get this full book put together and ready for delivery. If anyone has any additional things to try that would be great. One thing I feel might be an issue is that some of the files seem to be using a different font, "Times" vs. "Times New Roman", Frame automatically substitutes it, so was wondering if that is the issue.
Any and all assistance will be great on this.

    > .ps file was running about 57,000kb
Then you aren't anywhere near a 32-bit file size constraint.
    > We are running 64 bit machines here, though the program I think is the 32 bit version.
Pretty much all CPUs are 64-bit now. What matters is the OS version, and Win7 and 8 installs are commonly 64-bit these days. FM may not even have specific 32- or 64-bit installs. I've tested FM9 on Win7/64 for file size limits, and it sails past 4GB with no problems.
    > ... stops everytime on one particular page, that has was is an OLE linked .vsd file in it.
As if the world needed another reason to never ever use OLE for anything anywhere, esp. in Framemaker. Export that object in a stable graphical file format (PDF should work). Import that.

Here is an article from Adobe:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/exporting-publishing-pdf.html
Export an open document to PDF for printing
    Choose File > Export.
Specify a name and location for the file.
For Save As Type (Windows) or Format (Mac OS), choose Adobe PDF (Print), and then click Save.
When you select the Adobe PDF (Print) option, you cannot include interactive elements in the PDF. To export an interactive document to PDF, see Create interactive documents for PDF.
    Do one of the following:
To use a predefined set of job options, choose a preset from the Adobe PDF Preset menu.To create a PDF/X file, either choose a PDF/X preset from the Adobe PDF Preset menu, or choose a predefined PDF/X format from the Standard menu.To customize options, select a category from the list on the left and then set the options.
For Compatibility, choose the lowest PDF version necessary to open the files you create.
Click Export (Windows) or Save (Mac OS).
To reset options to the default, in the Export Adobe PDF dialog box, hold down Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) and click Reset. (The Cancel button changes to Reset.)

    *What I've Tried*
I haven't had any luck with the solutions others have posted online (like Little Snitch being a culprit) when I've searched for either the "Save As PDF", "Error While Printing", or the console log error. I've run the printer reset function in system preferences and I've never had any printer installed on the system.
I should note that prior to any of these problems with Safari, I installed the Firefox 3 RC1. I've since uninstalled it, because I was suspicious of it having an effect (being a little buggy as an RC). Removing it with AppCleaner hasn't changed the problem.
    Thanks all,

I could print/save as .pdf until I did my latest software upgrade. Now I get "error while printing", and have been unable to find a solution. this is quite a problem for me, because I do a lot of research on the Web and have saved my results for years in pdf. Have you found a solution?

  • Acrobat PDF Printer STILL freezes when pasting filename into Save dialog

Ref: Acrobat Printer Freezes on Save when CTL+V is used
No change in Acrobat X.  Printing system still freezes up entirely when pasting a filename into the Save dialog, when printing to Adobe PDF printer.  Most often from Firefix (all versions through 28.0) but from other programs as well (also happens from MS Outlook 2010 32 bit).
Any chance of an update from Adobe?
Acrobat Pro X on Win 7 64 bit.  Multiple systems exhibit same behavior.
Same issue occurs in Acrobat XI Standard.
Workaround is possible by manually typing in filename, or renaming, but clearly this should not be happening.  If you forget, it requires a lot of steps (or a reboot) to try again.

If you copy text directly from FireFox (or Word, or pretty much any program, other than Notepad), and try to paste into the Save Dialog to save your PDF, guaranteed crash.
HOWEVER, if you paste the text into Notepad first, and then copy it again, you can then paste into the Save dialog no problem.  This is why the "test" that the Adobe rep did to recreate the problem was pointless: He managed to re-create the one workaround method that DOES work, instead of actually trying to do things the way that were causing the issue to show up.
The problem appears to be related to any sort of "rich" text.  Windows ignores the "rich" information and only keeps the text if you paste into a filename in the system.  So Windows handles it just fine, it's Adobe's save dialog that can't handle it.  Copied text from Firefox is usually pretty clean (IE is worse), but there must be some formatting remnants in there that are giving Adobe fits (instead of properly ignoring them).  It may have something to do with 64-bit Windows and 32-bit Firefox and 64-bit Acrobat all coming together?  Copying and pasting between 64-bit and 32-bit programs usually has no issues, but in this case, it does (although the 64/32 bit relation is pure speculation on my end).
But by "washing" your text through Notepad first, it completely strips it down to truly pure plain text, which can then be pasted into Adobe's Save dialog without a crash.  This adds an extra step, and should be entirely unnecessary, but it does work.  At least until Adobe fixes their program.

  • Save as PDF and Save PDF as PostScript options in the Printer dialog are not supported.

I downloaded Indesign CS3 trial and liked everything about it until I attempted to print to postscript and got that message. Nothing I have tried has helped. I have seen in various forums that others are having the same problem, but haven't found any solution offered. I am running Tiger 10.4.10 on a new Intel Imac with 3G ram. This is a procedure I use very often in my workflow, and have never had this problem with CS2 on my PC or other Macs. Is there a solution? I downloaded the .1 update and installed that and it didn't change anything.

    PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME.
Its the first time Im using print booklet option to save my file. I have the same problem when trying to save as pdf and get the
"The Save as PDF and Save PDF as PostScript options in the Printer dialog are not supported."
I'm trying to save a .pdf of a booklet of a facing pages document of A4 size each facing page for a whole size A3, then hope to let the pages be correctly arranged by inDesing, then print and staple.
Meaning pages will be like this - Page #60 left side [of the A3] - page #1 right side [of the A3] , page # 2 right side[of the A3] - page #59 left side[of the A3] etc...
I CANT DO IT. I tried to follow Melvin Thompson , but when I choose save .ps and open it in preview all I see is independent a4 pages and just the left ones , .. How can I save my file as .pdf ready to be printed in a3 ?
    I really appreciate any help.

  • The Save as PDF option in the Printer dialog is not supported.

My client is asking me to save a separations PDF file. But whenever I save it to PDF, a this message pops out: The Save as PDF option in the Printer dialog is not supported. I'm using InDesign cs5 and Adobe PDF 9.0. I'm on Mac OS X 10.6.6.

  • I have a problem using the "save as pdf..." command of the print panel of MS Word (lower L corner).  When file has a few photos in it, the pdf file becomes huge; 7 mb Word file becomes 31 mb., on MacBook Pro with Intel Core 2 Duo processor , OS X 10.5.8

How can converting a MS Word file to a pdf make the file 5x bigger?  Can someone tell me how to update the "save as pdf..." feature when "printing" a file in MS Word (Word:mac 2008, ver. 12.2.5).  The problem is that using this to create pdf files gives huge files when the Word file has graphics pasted as pictures from Powerpoint, even for simple graphics and when first exported at low resolution (180 dpi) as jpg files from Powerpoint and inserted into Word.

Here's a little more info on the save_as_pdf issue.  It is Word files in 97–2004 format (doc) that get 5x bigger.  The conversion works fine and file size is normal if the Word file is saved in most recent Word format (docx rather than doc).  Somehow MS Word can't save its own files properly in pdf format.  Thanks Bill for all the frustration.

  • Printing to a PDF when Adobe Reader disables "Save as PDF"

I have searched far and wide on the web and cannot figure this out.
I have an Adobe PDF. When I try to open it with Preview, I get the following message:
    Please wait...
If this message is not eventually replaced by the proper contents of the document, your PDF viewer may not be able to display this type of document.
You can upgrade to the latest version of Adobe Reader for Windows®, Mac, or Linux® by visiting http://www.adobe.com/go/reader_download.
For more assistance with Adobe Reader visit http://www.adobe.com/go/acrreader.

Mac is a trademark of Apple Inc., registered in the United States and other countries. Linux is the registered trademark of Linus Torvalds in the U.S. and other countries.
From what I have read, Adobe has imbeded some commands into the PDFs created by certain software which only allows the PDFs to be opened by Adobe products (Reader, Acrobat, etc.). I can easily open it with Adobe Reader and fill the document in. However, it is a job application, and I would like to be able to email it back to somebody, but I wish to make it so that it is not editable.
Normally, this would be easy, simply use Preview's "Save as PDF" function. Unfortunately, "Save as PDF" does not work from Adobe Reader, I am not sure why although I am sure both Apple and Adobe will point fingers at the other when asked.
Thus, I am looking for a program that will effectively clone a printer, but print to a PDF instead of a actual printer. I have used PDFwriter in the past, and tried CUSP-PDF, but neither seems to work in Mountain Lion. I am running Mountain Lion 10.8.3 and the most current version of both of these  PDF print clone programs appears to be several years old, Snow Leopard era.
Any input on how I can convert the PDFs that are only openable in Adobe Reader to a non-editable format would be greatly appreciated. I can easily print them and then scan them back in, but the end result does not look professional and I would prefer to not have to do this.
    Thank you,
    Willis
