Save as PDF produces blank file

In Firefox, when I select "Save as PDF" from the Print options, all I get s a blank pdf file. This just started happening for no apparent reason. Any suggestions?
Here's what happens: I chose a webpage to Print, the Print dialog appears and I select "Save as PDF". The pdf file is then created with the title I select and placed in the folder I select, but the actual pdf created is a blank page. If I selected A4 or US Letter or landscape or portrait, all those are reflected in the blank page (i.e. it is an A4 landscape format pdf, but blank!).
Any help much appreciated!

Thanks for quick responses. Found my answer. If Firefox Page Setup is not set correctly to a proper page type (like A4), then when you select Print it simply won't work. The paper and orientation selections in Print are ignored. Only those in Page Setup are used and if they are bogus somehow (mine said "unknown"), then you get a blank document. So all working now! Thanks!

  • When I try to save on some websites I will try to save a pdf or mp3 file. Down below it will list the file and in the 'save as type' box it will not list as save as '.pdf or .mp3' but instead always says 'all files' which will not save it in a way it can

Why won't the 'save as type' section list .pdf or MP3 to save a PDF or MP3 file but instead always says 'save as type' -- 'all files "."'. How can I get rid of the 'all files'.?

Sorry, I have no idea what you are doing; can you give us some details?

  • Why Does Save As-PDF/A reduce file size when I don't want it to?

I scanned a 4-paged printed card with my Epson Perfection 4490 scanner in order to digitally archive it. Each page is about 5x7 inches, and I scanned at 100 percent. I scanned each page as an individual TIFF image file, at 600 samples per inch.
I brought each TIFF image file into Photoshop one at a time. I saved each TIFF as a JPEG, at Quality: 8, Baseline ("Standard").
Then, I brought the JPEG's into Adobe Acrobat Pro to create a 4-paged PDF. Initially, the file size of the saved 4-paged PDF was 5 MB. (Later, I determined the individual JPEG's add up to 5.2 MB.) When saving as PDF/A, the final format that I want to use, the file size was unexpectedly reduced from 5 MB to 2.5 MB.
What is the reason for the file size being reduced to 2.5 MB? I had already done the compression that I wanted in Photoshop. The PDF was not downsampled. I purposely did not use Optimizer.
I did a test. This time, in Photoshop, I compressed each TIFF to JPEG, at Quality: 5, Baseline ("Standard"), the Medium setting instead of the High setting. After bringing these JPEG's into Adobe Acrobat Pro, the saved 4-paged PDF was 2.8 MB in size, an expected smaller size. Saving as PDF/A produced a file of 2.6 MB in size, very close to the same size this time, possibly indicating it accepting the Medium quality level.
Apparently, saving as PDF/A reduces the quality level of JPEG's to Medium quality, when they are of higher quality to begin with. It seems to be designed to optimize even when I don't want it to.

Here's the Audit Space Usage for the original 5 MB file. It shows the images taking up the majority of the space, as expected:

  • PS elements saves pic as a blank file and I cannot open it

Hey guys, I'm hoping you can help me.
I am using Photoshop Elements 8 and I'm not sure what happened (or what I did), but suddenly the files I save (save-as, i rename retouched files) started saving as blank thumbnails. I cannot open them, and the properties list the type of file as "File" (although I was saving them .jpeg).
Also, the size of the blank thumbnails is about the same as the original picture (a little larger cause it's retouched; which is normal).
The file still saves as a blank if I change the name and if I try changing the format (.bmp, .jpeg., etc)
I'm using Windows Vista, if it matters.
I'm attaching a screencap of what it looks like in the folder and the file properties that come up
Let me know if I should provide any other information and I'd appreciate any and all help. This is the only PS I have access to right now and it's painful to have folders of pics and not be able to do anything with them.
    Thanks in advance =)

It looks like like windows got confused because you have periods in the file names.
If you take one of your saved files and add a .jpg at the end elements should open the file.
It's probably a good idea not to use periods in file names except for the file extension.
Using an underscore instead of periods is a better way to go.
It also seems that in later versions of elements and photoshop one has to be careful about using periods in the file names or the program won't save the files right
which was not the case in old versions of elements and photoshop.
The trick to saving a remamed file with periods is to reselect jpg from the dropdown after renaming the file so the proper extension is added.
That being said i've avoided using periods in file names for many years just to avoid any possible problems.

  • MS Word 2004 print/save as pdf - mysterious blank page

    Hi,
I'm using Microsoft Word 2004 with OS 10.4.6. When I use the Save as pdf feature under the Print dialog, I keep getting blank pages in the pdf that don't appear in the Word Doc itself.
The Word document contains 30 pages. The first page is a jpeg graphic. I managed to get it to print fine the other day, but after my wife fixed a few spelling errors, I got a blank page as the second page in the pdf. Strangely enough, there is no blank page there in Word. I turned on invisible characters in Word and couldn't find any stray characters. The first page is a jpeg graphic that takes up 75% of the page.
All of the pages are formatted the same, portrait 8 1/2 x 11 with standard margins. Anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
I tried pulling out the margins all the way the the edge, but I'm still experiencing the problem. I also tried reducing the image size significantly with no success. Any suggestions?
I also tried deleting the image. With the image gone, the extra page goes, too. The page with the section break is still there but mysterious page #2 is gone. When I import the image again, though, I re-create the problem.
I just realized I didn't try the 'Use Printer metrics to layout document' that Paul suggested and might look into that.
Any other suggestions? I hesitate to do it because the document is somewhat elabourate, but I might try rebuilding the first few pages in a new document to see if I add the image first and then add the text if it will solve the problem.
One other question. When I reveal invisible formatting, it does show two paragraph marks in the footer. This is the same for all footers on every page in the entire document. Could that be causing the problem? If so, do you know if it is possible to delete only the footer on the first page?
One other clue: I used to have a graphic on the back page and now that I think of it, there was a blank page after it, too. It sure sounds like your tiling description...
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Save as PDF and AI file at the same time?

    Hey everyone,
I was wondering if it's possible to save an AI file as both an AI file & PDF file at the same time??
Where i work, we always need to save an AI file and a PDF file. So is there a way I can set up my Illustrator so everytime i save something, it'll  save the AI file and automatically create the PDF too? ..
Or is there no way around .... Save as: Illustrator file.  /   Save as: PDF file in two separate actions?...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

No, it is not possible in the base product.
(I guess it is probably doable with scripting, I'll defer to others on that.)
But can you stop and tell us why you want to do this?
AI files with "Preserve PDF Compatibility" and PDF files with "Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities" are functionally equivalent. Both of which are the default. In both cases, the file contains a PDF portion that is visible to PDF viewers, and an Illustrator private data section that is used by Illustrator. Two entirely complete versions of the information that can stand on their own appear in both file types.
While I realize the requirement may be beyond your control, it would still be good to understand it's origin.

  • When I save a PDF report the file name is xdo instead of "report name.pdf"

    Hi,
I started a new project with BI Publisher integrated with OBIEE, I builded a set of reports that are working properly (these are the first reports on this OBIEE/BIP server)
Accessing Oracle BI Cataloge I can run the reports and change the output format to pdf.
when I press the right mouse button and select "save as" a dialog box appears.
On the "File name" field, the default name that BIP writes is "xdo" I would like it to be the "name of the report.pdf".
It seems that if I create a new report the file name is correct but if I change the name of the report then BIP always selects XDO as the default file name.
Is there any place where I can configure the default name.

Thanks for the quick reply.  I figured out how to get the desired results by using tagging.  For anyone who may reference this post in the future, I went to "Customize" in the top right corner of Adobe, then selected "Create new tool set...", looked under "accessiblity and found the "tag" option.  Hit ok, tag is added to the toolbar.  Then I highlighted the dataset in the PDF that was relevant to the output format, then clicked "tag", saved as spreadsheet.  Sorry I can't provide more details on how tagging works or if there's a more elegant solution available, but I'm sure one's out there.

  • No option to "save as" PDF to reduce file size in Preview

There is no Save As option. I have tried exporting my pdf, there is no file size option when I do this. I have tried to duplicate the pdf as suggested in another topic on this forum, which also then didn't have the Save As option and also didn't have any file size options when trying to save in all the many ways which I had already tried. I also tried to print and save from there, which was another option suggested on this forum. That also didn't offer me any options to reduce the file size despite it being a "save as" window. I'm lost. Send Help.

The screen capture won't let me snag the dropdown selection (attached) but the only options available to me are...
    Photoshop (*.PSD;*.PDD)
    Large Document Format (*.PSB)
    OpenEXR (*.EXR)
    Photoshop Raw (*.RAW)
    Portable Bit Map (*.PBM;*.PGM;*.PPM;*.PNM;*.PFM;*.PAM)
    Radiance (*.HDR;*.RGBE;*.XYZE)
    TIFF (*.TIF;*.TIFF)

  • Can you change X Pro default settings to save all PDFs using "smallest file size" job option?

Is there a way to change Acrobat X Pro's default PDF Save settings to use the settings in Distiller's "smallest file size" job options, or adjust Acrobat's default save settings to a close match?

In Windows you select the printer in the Start>Printers menu and right click to get the properites. You can then go to the settings tab and select the smallest file size job options. When you do it in the printer settings, you have set the default. Be very careful with this choice. It typically reduces the image resolution and embeds no fonts. If you are not distributing the file, then probably not an issue. However, with distribution you risk many folks not being able to read the PDF because of strange characters and low-res image.

And exactly what is it that you are trying to save? What PDF settings? You need to be more specific. Provide an exact description and possibly screenshots.

  • Save as PDF results in blank image

I have some Illustrator files that, when I save as PDFs, the resulting file is blank.  Other files have segments missing; some are just fine.   What am I doing wrong?

I didn't use any spot colors.  All there is are line and arc segments.  When saving the PDF I tried all different combinations of parameters.  I did AI because that's what the first shop we talked to wanted.  I'd hate to have to start all over again...
Anyway, I think there must be some difference between segments, since from the same AI file some of them are OK in the PDF and some aren't.  Can you think of anything it could be in that arena?
    I really appreciate your help!

  • Save As PDF file size issues

I am currently using Word 2008 to produce a club newsletter for email distribution. The Word (.docx) file can be up to 2.4MB in size. When I use Print > Save to PDF the resulting file can be as large as 12MB! I tried using the CUPS-PDF virtual printer option and got a file 26MB is size!!
A friend used his Windoze machine to print to PDF and got the file size I was after at just over 1MB. I also tried the Adobe Online "convert to PDF service" and got file sizes lower than 1MB.
What is going on with the Mac OSX conversion? How can I get smaller PDF's without having to shell out for Adobe Acrobat Pro?

    Peter Ongley wrote:

This may not help or may degrade any images in your document, but try this: Open the PDF file in the Preview application. Invoke File -> Save As, then set "Quartz Filter" to "Reduce File Size", give the file a different name, and save the file.

  • Officejet 6600 produces blank pdf scans

I have a officejet 6600 all in one printer.I have had no troubles until today.I regularly use the device to scan and produce a pdf of my scan. Today the pdf files of the scan are showing only blank pages even though the image on my pc in the HP scan tool shows the correct image of the scan. So, the PDF file generation is producing blank files. All help is appreciated.

Hi Keith! I'd start by running the following two uninstall processes: Fix problems that programs cannot be installed or uninstalled Uninstalling the Printer Software Once it is uninstalled, I would suggest putting your system into clean boot mode within the Microsoft configuration.  You can do so by following this document: How to perform a clean boot in Windows. Once the computer is in clean boot mode, I would suggest reinstalling the HP Printer Install Wizard for Windows. Please let me know how it goes!

  • Save as PDF not working suddenly

As of yesterday, unable to use the *'Save as PDF'* feature in the print dialogue.
Clicking on Save as PDF produces no result window (file name as save location). In fact, none of the options under PDF button works, neither does the Preview button.
Happening with all applications. No font conflicts. Permissions repaired.
Only way to make this feature work now is by
    1. manually deselecting the default printer (Epson)
    2. manually selecting Adobe PDF 9
    3. clicking on the PDF button
    4. selecting Save as PDF select +(not Print: no file is pdf-ed or saved anywhere)+
~ and the original workflow is back (save dialogue box pops up, etc.)
All of this should happen almost automatically, as before. Assume something is broken / corrupted.
Any help would be appreciated, as I use this feature a lot.

Reinstalled SL over current installation and updated to 10.6.1.
'Save as PDF" still doesn't work.
If 'Save as PDF' is an Automator workflow, here's a clue perhaps...
In user>library>pdf services, found a workflow reading 'Save As PDF-X.workflow'. When clicked, opened up the Automator library with the following message:
"The behavior of this workflow may have changed because of the reasons listed below.
The workflow was saved with an older version of the action "Apply Quartz Filter to PDF Documents. Some behavior may have changed."
    Anyone?
