Save as PDF without Bookmarks

Hello,
I have a one page Webi report in BO XI 3.0 SP2 that I want to save as a PDF file ready for distribution.  The save to PDF works fine but the PDF document automatically opens with the Bookmarks pane displayed on the left hand side of the screen.  This takes about 40% of the screen width.  It is quite annoying to have to close the bookmarks section before reading the report.
There is no need to show bookmarks for this document as it is one page without any sections in the report body.
Can the PDF output be configured to not automatically show the Bookmarks pane when opening the final PDF?
Best regards,
Chris

Hi Chris,
Following solution will help you resolve your query.
Here are the steps to follow:
1. Open a new document in Notepad and copy the following code into it:
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\5.0\AdobeViewer]
"TrustedMode"=dword:00000001
"EULA"=dword:00000001
"AntialiasThreshold"=dword:00000011
"DefaultSplitterPos"="0"
2. Save the file as "RemoveBookmark.reg". Make sure that you include the double-quotation marks (") in the "Save As" dialog box so that a *.reg format file is created instead of a standard *.txt format file.
3. Distribute this file to your end user(s) so that they can double-click it to set the bookmark panel so that it is not visible.
Note: Future PDF documents will now be viewed without displaying the bookmark panel. If this setting is later overridden (for example, a user manually moving the bookmark panel splitter and then closes Adobe Acrobat Reader), then users can double-click the "Removebookmark.reg" file again to reset the bookmark panel.

    Dave,
    Thanks for the reply. Of all the suggestions I've received this seemed to
    be most promising. I gave it a try and the problem is that when I attempt
    to save as optimized a message box pops up and says I have to save my
    document first. Low and behold when I save it, compression occurs. Even
    when I select the options you suggest I'm left with a compressed document.

    You don't want the UncompressPDF plugin - that's designed to split out the
    COS objects but doesn't remove the Flate encoding (plus if you've never
    compiled a plugin before, it's not really the time to learn).
    Instead, simply save your PDF file using the PDF (Optimized) file type,
    click the Settings button and under "Clean Up" - "Object compression
    options", choose "Remove compression". Turn everything else off if you
    want to retain the PDF content exactly as it was before.
    Your document-level scripts will then be in the file as plain text.

  • Save as pdf deleted bookmarks when combining pdf-files

    Hello,
    when I save several books each to a pdf-file with save as pdf (or printing to .ps and converting afterwards), the bookmarks are deleted when I combine the pdf-files with Acrobat. Only one bookmark for the 1st. file exists in the new pdf-file.
    The reference of the bookmarks in the original generated file is e.g. "g3.619626".
    These references are not anymore available in the combined files.
    I've tried several settings before saving as pdf but nothing helped.
    Ther are no problems of combining ordinary pdf-files with bookmarks if they are generated by other programs then Framemaker.
    I need to combine files as well within a book, as "save to pdf" is not able, to generate one file with different pages sizes. I then need to generate a separate pdf-file of the pages with the for e.g. bigger page size and combine it afterwards.
    In that project I'm working there will over all something between 1000 and 1500 pages from maybe 10 books with hunderts of bookmarks plus additionally separete pfd files to combine. So it's not an option to treat every bookmark before combining the pdf-files.
    My system is FM11.02.384 / Acrobat Pro 11.0.3 / Windows 7 64 Bit

    Never having had a need to do it, and Adobe documentation for Acrobat being what it is, I can't tell if AcroPro is supposed to be able to merge bookmarks when merging PDFs. It would be an unsurprising feature, and you do say it works on PDFs generated by means other than FM.
    Here's a hack that might work, if the variable-page-size rendering turns out to be out of reach. You can batch* this.
    Open each component PDF and re-save it with some otherwise harmless optimization (or even none). This will probably cause AcroPro to re-write the internal structures of each PDF, which might then be amenable to merged bookmarks when you re-open them for merging.
    * We do a similar thing for a slightly different problem. We have a software-in-a-box XML publishing app that, at just some seats, is generating PDFs that are tagged for byte serving (fast web view), but are not in fact encoded for it. This causes AcroReader plugin and entire browser crashes for web end users. The s/w vendor can't even tell us where the option is for controlling that feature, because they get the PDF gen code from some other 3rd party. So we routinely batch process all generated PDFs, with, oddly enough, NO "commands" selected. The re-save alone fixes it.

  • How can I save a PDF without specifying the directory?

    When I try to save changes I made to a PDF (highlighting and/or commenting), I'm prompted to specify which directory I'd like to save to, and I have to verify that "yes, I want to overwrite the existing file that has the same name". I just want to save the changes I made to the file I made the changes in. Is there a setting I can change to skip all the hassle?
    I'm using Adobe Reader XI and windows 8.1.
    Thank you,
    Ted

    I don't think it is a good idea to put it in /usr/bin at all but if you must, isn't it safer to move it there, as Trilby suggested? And change the permissions appropriately? That doesn't strike me as especially wise but it seems better than symlinking to an executable in your home directory from /usr/bin.
    One way to mitigate security threats is to limit the PATH root uses. So for an ordinary user, you might include /usr/local/bin or ~/bin. But for root, you wouldn't include these. This makes it a little bit harder to run something malicious as root inadvertently. If you start symlinking to executables in your home directory from /usr/bin, you defeat this. For example, I use this PATH for root:
    /usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin/vendor_perl:/usr/bin/core_perl
    So root can't even run stuff under /usr/local on my machine without explicitly giving the path. But if I symlinked from /usr/bin to stuff under ~/, there would be no point in the restriction.
    EDIT: but I just realised sudo can... damn!

  • Is there any way I can save a PDF without XFA technology?

    i need to open and be able to fill out fields in the PDF in a third-party viewer.  I am not able to due to the XFA technology which isn's supported by the program that I need to use

    There is no way to go back from an XFA form to an Acroform even with Acrobat Pro, still less with Acrobat. You either need to remake the form, or change your plans to use a third party viewer - Adobe have an excellent range of programs they would like you to use!

  • Can't Save As PDF in 7.2 after upgrade to 9.0

    Hello again, Framers,
    In 7.2 we routinely used Save As PDF without problem. Now that we also have FM 9 on our systems, however, it appears that the newer Distiller overwrote the older one (the one that worked well with 7.2) because now when trying to Save As PDF (in FM 7.2), we often have problems. It all seems very random and we are at a loss as to understand.what is happening, why, or how to fix it.
    The symptom is a FrameMaker error saying "Can't launch Acrobat Distiller to create a PDF file."
    Double-clicking acro.exe won't open Distiller -- nothing happens. (Can't open acrodist.exe or acrotray.exe under any circumstances.)
    Printing to .ps and double-clicking the .ps file sometimes works, sometimes not.
    Deleting the .tps files and others backups sometimes works, sometimes not.
    Retrying Save As PDF multiple times sometimes works, sometimes not.
    We three tech writers have similar setups: We're using XP, have all the latest FM patches, plenty of RAM, etc.
    I hope the answer isn't "get rid of 7.2 and use only 9.0" -- our deadlines are such that it's hard to work only in the new version. The UI is different and some functionality is different, so the learning curve will take at least a bit of time.
    Could it be as simple as having MIS re-install the 7.2 version of Distiller? Although we specifically requested they leave FrameMaker 7.2 when installing 9.0, we didn't think to mention Distiller, which was apparently overwritten.
    If anyone has any experience with this issue, your advice is most welcome.
    TIA,
    Gay Alson

    Thanks both Arnis and Mike --
    Interesting suggestions from both of you.
    Arnis, we're putting the cleanup utility on the back burner for the moment, since in our company, we can get in trouble using third-party software. However, it's good to know about this utility and we will use if it we have to. (Occcasionally we are forced to put our careers on the line for issues like this...)
    Mike, we created a folder called "PDFSettings" in the 7.2 "fminit" folder and copied over the six joboptions files from 9.0.  Rebooted, rePDFed and voila, that worked. (Mind you, we can't say for sure that's what worked, because as I said in my original post, the simple act of rebooting "sometimes works, sometimes not...")
    Eventually this problem will go away by itself because eventually we will get rid of 7.2 -- it's only deadline time-crunches that have made us reluctant to jump fully-clothed into 9.0...
    I really appreciate the two of you taking your time to offer suggestions and help. I can't imagine life in the FrameMaker world without you!
    Cheers,
    Gay

  • Unable to digitally sign and save a PDF document

    I am currently using ADOBE ACROBAT 8.0 Professional (Ver 8.1.0).  I provide proofreading service for a client.  The client provides me with a PDF which I use the comment and mark up tool to indicate required changes.  Once all of the comments are complete, I mark the document approved or disapproved and attach a digital signature.
    Recently, many files that I have recieved from the client will not allow me to sign and save the PDF.  I can save the PDF without the signature but not when it is digitally signed.  The error reads:
    "The document could not be saved.   A number is out of range"
    I queried my client to find out if they have made any changes.  They have recently upgraded to Illustrator 4 and they create the PDF's for me from the Illustrator files they work from.  There are four teams using the same Illustrator program but not all of them are producing files that I cannot sign and save.
    Can anyone tell me what the error indicates?  Is there a property assigned to the document that I can not recognize that refers to this problem.
    Since the files I work on contain proprietary information, I prefer not to attach them to this forum.  If anyone is interested in helping, I will share a file to fully explain my problem.

    I will try that, thank you.

  • Save as PDF malfunction v10.5

    All of a sudden one of my favorite tools in the OSX arsenal, the built-in "save as PDF" function, stopped working. Before I could take any webpage and save as PDf without any problems. Now, althought it still gives me a PDF file, the file is corrupt and reads +"Couldn’t open the file. It may be corrupt or a file format that Preview doesn’t recognize+." when opened. I can't remember changing any settings or removing any programs specifically although it is possible that that may have happened. Any help with resolving this issue would help a lot as I use this feature every day. Thanks

    I can't download your link from the hosting site. But a couple of suggestions...
    Choose one of the pdfs that give you that message and "Get Info" (command-i)
    Under "Open with" be sure that Preview is chosen. Under "Sharing & Permissioms, be sure that you "Me" has Read & Write privileges and "Staff" and "everyone" are "Read only".
    If that doesn't help, create a new User go to System Preferences > Accounts > "+" (make it an admin acct) and test the pdfs in this new account (you might drop some .pdfs in Shared so you have access to them logged in as the new user. if that works the problem is isolated to your User and not systemwide.
    Then we can take it from there.

  • How do I set up a .pdf form to save filled data without having to print the form?

    How do I set up a .pdf form to save filled data without having to print the form?  I have provided my clients a lifecycle .pdf form they can use to record data for unique client meetings.  They want the ability to save their completed data whenever they use the form under a unique file name.  I've told them the only way I know how to do this is to print the completed form as a .pdf document and then save it.
    Is their a way to save the data to a unique file name without printing the filled form?
    Is there a way to reset the form with blank fields after saving? or to add a clear fields button?
    Thanks.

    If you reader extend  a pdf using livecycle reader extensions then you can save the filled in data - this is true if you are using Adobe reader to view the PDF's. If you open it in Acrobat then the functionality is already there.

  • Save a pdf file without Adobe automatically adding "-Copy" to the end

    How can I save a pdf file without Adobe automatically adding "-Copy" to the end of file name?

    If you have actually made any changes (e.g. adding a Sticky Note or filling out forms), the Save button will appear in the bottom toolbar.  It will save it as the same name.
    "- Copy" is added only when you tap/click the Save As button.  You can change it to something else, if you'd like.

  • How do I create PDF from word without bookmarks?

    We have several forms that we create to PDF using "Combine" - "Merge Files Into A Single PDF" using Acrobat 9.0. Sub-bookmarks are created for each of these forms off of the headers in word. Is there a way (some setting) I can create the PDF withOUT getting the sub-bookmarks? We create several for each meeting and have 196 meetings a year. I realize I can highlight them all and delete them for each main bookmark, but would like to not have to do that as we have several main bookmarks.

    It would be best to give a link to an HP document you are having problems with.  Someone could try to duplicate the problem.
    What program are you using to print the document?
    Try a different program for printing.  Preview or Acrobat reader
    Are you saying other pdf documents print fine?
    Here are some ideas…
    I'd look first at your page setup options.
    file > page setup...
    Secondly, when you get the print window, look around at the various print options.

  • Reader plug-in, save copy of password protected pdf without password

    Hello,
    We currently have an Acrobat Reader plugin (using the 8.1 SDK) and are having trouble with password protected PDFs.
    The sole purpose of our plug-in is to pass a copy of the currently open PDF to a different folder on the user's computer. The problem we are facing is with the password protected PDFs. We would like to pass a copy of the PDF that doesn't have the readonly password protection.
    Scenario:
    1. The user opens a password protected PDF in Adobe Reader.
    2. They are prompted for the password, they enter it and can see the PDF. 3. Now they click our custom button.
    4. Save a copy of the currently open PDF without password protection
    Since we already know they have entered the correct password, in theory we should be able to either save all of the content to a new file, or simply remove the password protection.
    Can anyone point me in the right direction so that I will be able to get a PDF without the password?
    Thanks,
    Ryan

    Hi again,
    I was doing some research in the API reference and examples and I think that for my business problem, it will be sufficient if I can get the read access password. I found that I am able to use the following:
    AVCryptGetPassword(pdDoc, permsWanted, (void **)&password)
    This prompts the user to enter the password and puts the actual password in the &password variable, which will will work for us. Ideally though, I would like to not have to prompt the user again for the password since they already entered when opening the pdf, is it possible to get access to the plain text of the password that they typed when opening the pdf or another way?
    I tried:
    StdSecurityDataRec* secData;
    secData = (StdSecurityDataRec*)PDDocGetNewSecurityData (pdDoc);
    if (secData) {
    if (secData->hasUserPW)
    char* mypw = secData->userPW;
    However, the password is encrypted. Thanks for your help!
    Thanks,
    Ryan
