Save BB settings before performing security wipe

Hello, We are moving from a internal mail environment to Microsoft Online Services hosted email. I understand as part of the process that all BlackBerry users will need to perform a security wipe prior to reactiving their devices. What is the best way for users to save/keep their settings before they perform the security wipe? Is it only possible to do this via Desktop Manager? I ask because not all our users have/utilize the Desktop Manger. Thanks for any help on this topic!!

Right. Using the Backup and Restore feature in the Desktop Manager is the only option for you I believe. Couldn't you place the Desktop Manager on a shared drive that everyone has access to for them to install it?
If you were using a BES I would suggest using the BlackBerry Web Desktop Manager because you can configure it to allow anyone to access it from your intranet

Performing security wipe for my BBZ10

Greeting guys, I own a Blackbery Z10 which is less than a year old. During November 2014 it started switching off when i access Contacs, Emails and certain applications...it has been doing on & off till now. Now what i did, i've perfomed security wipe...it is almost 3 hours now and i believe the phone is stuck...I really do not know what to do and I am worried if its gonna come around or not. Blackberry Protect and Security Wipe

Hi! If you would like to turn off your BlackBerry Anti-theft on your device you can simply go to your Settings → BlackBerry AntiTheft and simply disable it from there. But if your device is running 10.3.2 OS then you will be asked to enter your BlackBerry ID credentials. Just enter your BlackBerry ID username and password and it will be disabled. Then to perform security wipe, I suggest back up your device first before doing so. Then when you have everything backed up go to Settings → Security and Privacy → Security Wipe It may take some time to wipe your device and expect that it needs more than 30% battery level to continue. So keep your battery charged and wait for the wipe to be completed. You may also see that your device will turn off and on a few times while performing security wipe. NOTE:To find what OS you're currently running, go to Settings → About → Tap Category → Select OS on the drop down list and check current OS. 10.3.2 OS update is very tight in security specially when your BlackBerry Anti-theft is turned on. When you perform a Security wipe, you will need to verify your BlackBerry ID credentials. Then you must enter your BlackBerry ID credentials again after security wipe. If you fail to enter your BlackBerry ID, then your device is forever locked out. This is the reason why I always advise to have t he Anti-theft turned off first. Good luck!

If you are on 10.3.1 or earlier, there is no requirement to turn off Protect before a WIPE...the WIPE will remove the association between your BB device and all BB proprietary services, including Protect.

Please clarify what you mean by "resetting" the phone. When you reset the phone, no data is deleted. Do you actually mean Restore the phone? See the User Guide, Appendix B for the correct terminology,

As part of an estate, I need to securely wipe an iMac before it is given to the heirs.

Install or Reinstall Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
      left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) To securely erase the drive,
       click on the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
      the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
            because it is three times faster than wireless.

Secure wipe before dumping Titanium?

My G-4 PB Titanium workhorse has died. (Possible logic board issue.) Won't boot most of the time or when it does it dies almost immediately. I've reformatted; re-installed the OS, etc. To no avail.
Never had a Mac die before...
Took it to the apple shop. They claim it is "vintage" and wouldn't even touch it. The "Genius" claimed that the parts probably don't even exist any longer.
Said I could use it for parts.

Hi, Teknomad. If you're going to sell the Tibook as a parts machine, consider removing the hard drive (it's very easy) and keeping it for your own use instead of wiping it and including it in the sale. It won't add as much to the small value of the Powerbook as it's likely to be worth to you as a backup drive, particularly if you have no reason to think there's anything wrong with it.
If you really don't have any use at all for another HD, connect the Tibook to the MacBook in FireWire Target Disk Mode (Tibook as Target, MacBook as Host). Open Tiger's or Leopard's Disk Utility on the MacBook, select the Tibook's drive, and reformat it, selecting whatever security options you prefer. No need to reinstall anything on it afterward, if the PB won't start up or run properly anyway.
Since you already have a new MacBook this probably won't change your mind, but parts for the DVI Tibooks are readily available from third-party vendors, and plenty of people are still using these old workhorses, even repairing them. The "genius" was a bit quick to dismiss yours, I think.

How to do a security wipe if phone is stuck on start-up screen and your micro-usb port is also broken?

A week or so ago, my phone just out of the blue decided that it would not initiate fully anymore. It was laying on charge and when i took it off after an hour or so, it just stuck on the service provider's screen before saying "loading personal settings". I was informed that my os needed to be reinstalled, the problem is, my usb port ion my phone is also broken. I took the phone in to a repair guy, but he wants to ask me an idiotic price to fix it and says he is able to do so without using my usb port? Is there any way you can wipe your Blackberry 8520 and reinstall an O.S if your usb port on the phone is broken? Please, this is a matter of life and death as there are a hell of a load of contacts, documents and emails i would like to save, but if not able to, I can handle that too, just need the phone to work, it's of the highest importance!

I take it that you do not have a recent back up of your phone's data?
Try starting your 8520 in Safe Mode.

If you can do that, you can get to the Security wipe function, but without a good USB port, I am not sure how you're going to load the OS. But try Safe Mode first.

BB10 security wipe on a Q10 is taking a VERY long time.

I am running a security wipe on a Q10.. It's been going for over an hour. I've read it can take around 15 minutes but this is ridiculous.. I don't think it's working. The phone was only a few days old and has had very little use. I was about to pull the battery when I read that that will cause the software to be reloaded. The screen just has a swirly timer going around and what looks more like a printer icon. Any ideas what to do? I don't have much confidence it's going to finish, it feels like a bug.

Hey, This is why I started another topic. My situation is slightly different and I'm looking for an answer to a different question: Hello, I’ve searched high and low for the answer to this problem. I can find others with a similar problem, but no solution. Maybe someone here can help? I preformed a security wipe last night at approximately 10pm. I did this because I realised I’d used 7.8GB of my 8GB limit and it was affecting the phone’s performance – specifically, I couldn’t get the hub to load. I use my phone for social media, emails and messaging only, and with my contacts saved elsewhere I’m not concerned about having to set the phone up again. Because of that, I selected to wipe everything besides the security option, which was greyed out and couldn’t be selected. The wipe was successfully processed, my phone automatically shut down and restarted, and the sim/USB looking load image appeared with a small, revolving circle beneath it. Having performed a security wipe before I know it can take a few hours, so I went to bed. It’s now 1:30pm the next day and the security wipe still hasn’t completed. I’ve read various accounts of the wipe taking between 2-4 hours, but nothing about it taking this long. I’m concerned that, although the circle is still revolving, the wipe has crashed somehow and I have no way of booting or cancelling the wipe. I’ve restarted the phone once to no effect – the same load screen appears following the Blackberry icon. I do wonder whether this effectively restarted the wipe causing a further delay, as I did it at approximately 7am and my phone is hot to touch, suggesting it's doing something at least. A lot of people suggest taking the battery out to force a reboot, but unfortunately as this is a Q10 (and unless I’m missing something) that’s not an option: the battery’s not accessible. Does anyone know what I can do? Is there a fancy way of restoring to factory settings? I was wondering whether there’s a pin-hole-esque reset anywhere? I honestly don’t mind starting from scratch; I just want my phone back! I’m going to wait for tomorrow until I do anything in case the wipe is just taking a really (really) long time. I’d just like to know in advance if there’s another solution. I would prefer to find the solution myself rather than going to my provider, who will probably leave me totally phoneless for weeks! So: how do I reboot/cancel the wipe if I need to considering I can't remove the battery? Any help appreciated!

Ah, so you have some other issues you didn't mention. Here's what I recommend (when you can find the cable.)
Wipe the device
To perform a Security Wipe please follow the instructions below. Be sure and use BB Link to make a full backup before proceeding with the wipe. The size of each module of the backup file can be a clue as to where the data is hiding (usually application data):

Once the wipe is complete I recommend updating the OS to the latest available. Lots of bug fixes are incorporated in this latest version:

Try not to restore your backup if you don't have to. Start over from scratch. If you have to, do each module of the restore separately (Settings, Media, Application Data) and see if you can determine which one of those has all the data. It's usually App Data so don't restore that if you don't have to.

In light of some of the issues I've been having I decided to go forward with a security wipe and just reload the device and reconfigure bridging. If I get back to the same point I was before with bridging not showing my emails but everything else, etc, I may just give up on the Playbook altogether.
However, I find it interesting that when I performed the security wipe and started the setup again, it is redownloading and applying the 1.0.1.1710 OS? I just think it's odd that the OS doesn't somehow get flashed into the device or get permanently used as the basis for a reconfig. The warning stated that it'll blow away settings, files, applications - I guess the OS is being treated as an application in this case.

Yes, and no.,..on the handheld BlackBerry a security wipe does not wipe the operating system, just your personal information, data and preferences.
When the device is wiped using something like JLCmder, you get et an "Error 507" which means no operating system is detected on the device. You must have the OS loaded and installed to your PC.

Unable to restore after security wipe

Desktop V7.1.0.32 Playbook V2.0.1 Bundle 358
I backed up the Playbook before performing a security wipe - now the playbook will not restore - i get the message that the software version for the playbook is incompatabe with the data in the back up file - to continue update your Tablet OS
I have the latest OS so this is not possible
The first time I did the security wipe the software updated so this may be the problem - how do I go back a level to previous OS?
How do I Restore other wise?

Here is a procedure for downgrading to an earlier version which came from another poster some time ago.
TUTORIAL DOWNGRADE 2.1.0.358 to 2.0.0.7971
Download 2 Softwares :
1. Dingleberry 3.3
2. OS 2.0.0.7971
Make sure development mode is ON
STEPs :
1. Make sure that your OS is 2.1.0.358 and use DM 7.0.0.41 (new update driver from your PB)
2. Ekstrack dingleberry then run dingleberry.exe
3. You need to run dinglebery for the first time to make firmware folder appear then close dingleberry.
4. Open your OS 2.0.0.07971 and ekstrack it then put in the folder custom
5. Connect your PB to your PC then DM will shown up.
6. Run dingleberry.exe then click on Firmware Button.
7. The firmware main view will shown up and make sure USB Information on the rightside is connected.
8. Click on button on the leftside and choose custom
9. Right button you can choose Core OS or Full OS. I choose Core OS
10. And click the Update button below and wait until it finished (dont break any connection).
11. After finished your PB will restart on goes back to 2.0.0.7971 without any notification for updating to 2.1.0.358. Close your DM.

How Do You Securely Wipe All Info Off Internal Hard Drive?

A friend has to ship her new iMac back to Apple for a replacement -- long story.
But before she ships it off she wants to wipe the internal hard drive of all her personal info -- mail, photos, music, documents, ...
What's the best way to securely wipe that internal drive?

you can do it using the erase tab in disk utility. there is an option to erase securely. it writes zeros over everything on the drive. do just one zero erase pass. disk utility lets you choose multiple erase passes but that's a vast overkill.
to do it to an internal drive boot from the snow leopard dvd and use disk utility there to erase the drive. when done restart and hold option at the chime. this will boot you into startup disk manager. eject the isntall dvd there and shut down.

Power Macintosh 7200 to Mac Mini back up and secure wipe question

Hi all, nearly figured this on my own but hope that someone here can fill in the gaps.
I have a clunky old 7200/75/16 (no upgrade card, bog standard machine) I want to sell/give/dump.
Before that, I need to back up the 500 MB HDD (hard to believe that was big once, now looking at a 500 GB HDD for the new machine!) and then secure wipe it.
I've learned that I can get halfway there with a crossover cable and Apple Talk. So far, so good.
Now, how about the secure wipe? I've had a look but I've not had any success in finding a how-to.
I have a feeling I can't use Disk Utility in Leopard for this, but maybe I am wrong.
Advice is sought from anyone here that can share their expertise on the best way to go.
A cheap/free solution (that doesn't destroy the machine) would be welcomed!
If relevant: I don't have the installer floppies for the 7200. I unwisely bought the machine without them but vaguely recall from an earlier Macintosh that Disk First Aid had some kind of format facility though I doubt it was far from secure by today's standards. I figure I can find a set of installer disks on eBay to get the 7200 operational again once I've completed this chore...

I've learned that I can get halfway there with a crossover cable and Apple Talk.
File sharing via AppleTalk cannot be used with the most modern operating systems. You should be able to use TCP/IP. A third-party program may be of interest. Also, see this article for some general information.
Now, how about the secure wipe?
One could use Drive Setup (a 1.7.3 version is available for download) for this. Under the Functions menu you will find Initialization Options, where "Zero all data" can be chosen. However, the program has to run from another disk (such as a bootable floppy). It is possible to create and modify a startup floppy on the 7200.
A third-party application such as Wipe Info (part of Norton Utilities, commercial) or Burn 2.5 (freeware) could be used, too.
If relevant: I don't have the installer floppies for the 7200.
The Disk Tools PPC (here) is one thinkable startup floppy for the Power Macintosh computer in question. If necessary, a complete System 7.5.3 (e.g., the International English version here) can be downloaded from Apple.

You may need to reset your network settings, making sure the network you're accessing is stable: tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
If your iPhone still can't connect to App Store, tap Settings > iTunes & App Store > tap the Apple ID and sign out > later, sign in with your Apple ID.
