Save directly to Time Capsule

I use an Mac Air and dont want to save to my computer. Is there an option to save directly to time capsule?

Yes - you have the TC mounted as a drive under shared and save to that. Very straight to do

You can move your iTunes library.. Apple have explicit instructions to do it. If the library is moved to the TC and accessed over wireless, the efficiency of the whole system will drop dramatically..
A file you download goes.. Modem---TC--Laptop--Back to TC--Store on disk. Double looping the wireless slows it dramatically..
As far as using TC for your iTunes.. you CAN.. but SHOULD YOU?
    Store files on the TC.

This is asked several times a day.. obviously people are struggling with their latest SSD being too small.
The TC is not suitable for network file server.. but many people having no choice press it into service as such.
It cannot be partitioned. It was and is and ever shall be a backup device for Time Machine.
    Major issues.
    1. No backup.. no way Time Machine can backup a network drive. No place to backup to.. So all your files will be at risk. And you will need to buy a third party like CCC to do backup.
    2. The TC cannot be partitioned and mixing TM backups and data is not great.
    3. The drive is slow to spin up and quick to spin down.. there is no controls.
    4. iPhoto in particular can easily corrupt its entire library with wireless networking causing a disconnection to one photo. Even if you do this;;; do not move your photo library... you have been warned!!
    5. iTunes will constantly lose connection to the library. The disk is too slow to respond.. itunes on the computer will constantly spit out errors. Even in the midst of streaming the TC can spin down the disk due to caching.
    6. Do not use any live files on the TC no matter what else you do.. if you edit files in whatever program the file must be on the local hard disk.
    7. The only suitable location for most libraries is a computer. You can plug in an external hard disk.
Read pondini for some work arounds.

  • Saving pictures directly to Time Capsule

Can someone tell me how I can save my pictures directly to my TC? My picture files are very large so I'd like to store them on my TC as opposed to my laptop and then just grab them on TC when I need to edit. I use iPhoto.
Can someone walk me through this? Thanks!

i had hoped to be able to transfer them via my laptop directly to time capsule. is this possible?
    Yes.
And can stuff be saved on time capsule that is not then stored on the hard drive?
    Yes.
to complicate things, i'm hoping to be able to view them on apple tv, and hoped to be able to synch the apple tv with the time capsule
I don't know about Apple TV. I don't think you can sync a Time Capsule, but check either in the Time Capsule forum, hidden in the +Digital Life+ section, at: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1253 and/or the MobileMe forums, also in +Digital Life,+ at: http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=116
One additional consideration is backups. Most backup apps (including Time Machine) won't back up a Time Capsule (Apple's main intention for the Time Capsule is as a destination for backups, not a source). There is a feature in +Airport Utility+ where you can attach an external drive to one and "archive" the TC's disk to the external. So be sure you have a good backup plan.

  • Save files to time capsule

How do I actually save files directly to time capsule?  Drag and drop does not seem to work.

    Using what OS??
You need to mount the disk first and create a new directory for the files.
It is also a bad idea because the TC cannot backup your files and nor can TM.

  • Can I backup my Ipad directly to Time Capsule

Is there a way to backup an Ipad without connecting directly to a Mac or PC?

can I backup my iPad directly to Time Capsule?
    In a word, no.
The iPad backs up to iTunes on your Mac or PC. Then, the Mac backs up in turn using Time Machine to the Time Capsule.
Your other option is to backup the iPad using iCloud.

  • Import directly to time capsule

i'm looking for additional hard drive space for image storage. Two questions. Is it possible to set up time capsule as a stand alone hard drive? and can aperture be configured to import directly to time capsule?

Short answer:  what Frank said (cross-posted my answer).  Read below for, essentially, the same conclusion -- or better spend you time shopping for a good FW drive.
Hi Brad.  You can use any drive for storing Masters.  Apple recommends -- and users concur -- that the drive should be directly connected to your computer (this rules out NAS).  Iirc, the Time Capsule can be configured (partitioned) to function as both a back-up drive and as a storage drive.  So you can do what you want.  But note that it should be wired to your computer (not wireless), and the connection should be at least as fast as FW400.  Also, since this will be a Referenced Masters set-up, you should be familiar with how that works.
Aperture imports files and puts them where you tell it to (or leaves them where they are).  If you have configured your Time Capsule (or part of it) to be storage, then you can tell Aperture to store your Masters there.
I recommend, however, that you leave your Time Capsule and as is, and scrimp together enough money to buy a FW800 external drive and dedicate that to storing your Masters.  You are outgrowing your storage (and backup) capacity -- this trend will continue.  Giving up some of your back-up capacity in order to convert it to storage capacity is only a stop-gap measure -- and the effort to do so is likely not worth the short-term gain.
Photography today, and Aperture today, demand a lot of hardware.  Storage is inexpensive -- buying what you need is almost always is a worthwhile strategy.

  • How do i save photos directly to time capsule

I want to use time capsule as a hard drive primarily for photos and I am unsure how to do this.  Thank you for any assistance.

Let's start over here, please. I'm sure that the Apple folks meant well, but I doubt that they really understood what you were asking.
The "originals" are on your Mac now, correct?  And you want to move these "originals" to the Time Capsule, correct?
If you do this....your "originals" will be on the Time Capsule.  When...not if...the Time Capsule has a problem, you have no backups for your photos and you lose everything.
For valuable data that you do not want to lose, you need at least 2 copies of everything. Originals are on one disk and backups are on another. When....not if....one disk has a problem, you at least have another copy of your valuable images.
We have seen numerous posts from users who are trying to do what you plan to do. All too often, we hear that there has been a problem with the drive...a loss of power...a mistake...any of a number of different things....and the user has lost all of their valuable data....because they had no backups.
I would never consider something like this for my images. Are you OK with having no backups?  If yes, we can tell you how to move the images over.....if you will not hold us responsible for the consequences.

  • Working directly from time capsule

Does any one have any experience working on files located on a Time Capsule through the ethernet connection? Especially with video software.
We are adding a second work station to our small video company. A simple and cheap way for two people to have access to the same file to work on is to locate the file on a Time Capsule and have each computer connect to it via the ethernet connections. Projects don't need to be edited simultaneously, just person A edits the file, saves, then person B can work on the file and save.
I have edited on external drives with FW 800 before, but never with ethernet. Just wondering if there is likely to be any problems with this set up?
    Thanks!

You do not need a router. But if you don't use a router how are you getting internet connection??
How did you expect to connect to the TC?
If you are using a system where internet is via wireless and you want to connect the two computers for high speed by ethernet that is fine.
The difference not having a router makes is you must set IP address yourself on both computers.. you must fix everything so the network between the two computers doesn't mess with the internet connection.
I would still buy and use a switch.. you can get a 5 port gigabit switch for $30-40.. the reason it is worth it is handling connection is generally done better by a switch.. but you can directly connect two computer using gigabit with a straight ethernet cable. Remember to set ip in a different range to that used by your router..
So with direct connection by cable or via a switch.. this is the setup.
Lets say you have a router that is set to 10.0.1.1 ie apple type.
Then set ethernet port to 192.168.1.10 on one computer and 192.168.1.11 on the other computer.
If the main router was actually 192.168.1.x then use 10.0.0.x on the computers.
Set the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0
Do not set a gateway (router in applespeak) or DNS..
The two computers can then find each other without the computer getting messed up with wrong gateways.
BTW if you simply plug the two computers together they may actually create a self discovery network using 169.254.x.x but that can be sloppy and slow the computers boot and connection, as everytime it starts it has to go through the discovery process.. it is much better to use a fixed IP which you control.

  • Is there a capability to save/export the time capsule settings file when using the iphone/ipad airport utility. the "file" button does not exist on the latest airport utility app.

is there a capability to save/export the new airport 2TB time capsule settings file when using the iphone/ipad airport utility. set-up wasn't a problem but the "file" button does not exist on the latest airport utility app v6.3 to save the configuration file.

the "file" button does not exist on the latest airport utility app v6.3 to save the configuration file.
Sounds like you are a bit confused with version numbers.
Latest AirPort Utility version for the iPhone / iPad is 1.3.3.  There is no option or capability to export/import settings on the iOS version(s) of AirPort Utility.....although you could take a series of screen shots and save them for future reference.
AirPort Utility 6.3.x is found on a Mac.....not on iPhone / iPad. Export and Import options are found under the File menu in 6.3.x.

  • Can you run/save applications off Time Capsule?

To avoid waste of space on the new Airs, could one use a Time capsule
for all its saving needs, applications, music, videos

Software applications should be (and usually must be) installed on either a local hard drive or directly-connected external hard drive of your Mac.
On the other hand data like iTunes music, videos, pictures, and documents are all things that certainly could be stored on the Time Capsule. How much you want to store on Time Capsule vs your laptop probably depends on how much time you spend "on the road" with your laptop - and if your laptop rarely leaves your home, then there likely isn't much need to keep most of your data on it.

  • Downloading Torrents Directly to Time Capsule

I recently purchased a Time Capsule to both replace my old router and serve as a place to store things I downloaded. After setting it up one of the first things I did was change the "save to" location of my Azureus to my TC. After downloading a few things tonight here is what I have run into:
Files download without issue, and are playable through Azureus however they do not actually show up when I open the Time Capsule through my hard drive icon. After doing a manual and computer search through my own computer and then through the few files I have so far transferred to my TC, there is no sign whatsoever of the files I downloaded. Another puzzling thing is that neither my own hard drive nor the TC shows any used space taken up by the files, but I assure you they are playable.
Any thoughts on how I might deal with or fix this?
    - hoeck
P.S. As a second question, my wireless upload speed from my computer to the TC is somewhere between 1 and 2 megs a second, which is perfectly fine by me, but what is a "normal" upload speed?

    No ideas?

  • Using Time Capsule with Windows 7. Won't work when modem connected directly to Time Capsule, must be connected through another router.

Apple Time Capsule working with Windows 7 PC will not work when modem is connected directly to the Time Capsule.  Only when a Cisco Linksystem is connnected inbetween the modem and the Time Capsule.

Sorry but it needs much more specific info than this..
What modem? Is it cable or adsl or some other?? Is it pure modem or broadband router included?
Cable has specific issues different to adsl.
If you used to use the Cisco/linksys router.. and have not reset the cable modem it will not work. Turn off the cable modem.. it must be powered down.. if battery backup drop out the battery. Remove the coax cable.. get it off. Power down everything else in the network.
Plug in the modem to the TC wan port.
Power up the modem.. wait 2min
Power up the TC.. wait 2min
    Power up the clients.
If it has worked you will now be able to open the airport utility on the windows computer and see the TC has a public ip on the WAN port. If not redo the whole thing but leave the modem off.. 15min.. 1 hour.. 1 day.. ring the cable company and ask them to reset. Usually a few minutes is enough.
If you have a modem with combined router.. then bridge the TC. Just google search it.
For other combos.. tell us specifics..

  • Streaming direct from Time Capsule (without a PC on)

This question may have been put forward a number of times and apologies if so. Is it possible to stream directly from a Time Capsule (or equivalent) to the Apple TV without a computer acting as an intermediary?
If so, how is this done, and if not, is it on the Apple's functionality roadmap?

No, iTunes play a key role in syncing/streaming data.
AppleTv probably does not know the location of media files, only the media type and metadata, so when selected for streaming it asks iTunes to stream the file.
I agree it would be nice to have a standalone server but they'd have to make it cost effective for anyone to buy one rather than a small computer which might be more flexible if prices were equivalent.
The NAS products out there which puport to have in-built iTunes servers are ok for sharing with iTunes on the network, but are not fully AppleTV compatible due to the need to set iTunes up with a numerical code to work with AppleTV.
