Save Error - says file is locked?

When I try to save my premiere file, it says "could not open the project file with write
access.  the file may be locked or you may not have permission to wirte to this location.
select "save as" from the file menu to save the project to a new location"
so, i have to keep saving as a different name everytime i want to save my file?
what's going on?

Windows Indexing is a little app, that prowls your system, looking for files that it can index to speed up Searches. It works fine for DOC, TXT, etc. files, but not well for AV and image files, though it will try. During this indexing process, it will lock the file, while it attempts to gather data. It will be unsuccessful, but that won't stop it. With the large AV files, this process can take some time, and for every change, it will start all over again. Same for the large working files in an NLE. I keep it turned off for all HDD's and all folder, but some will keep it on for just their My Document, or similar folders.
The networked drive is probably the issue. It appears that you do not have full rights to the files on that drive. Try Copying the files to an internal, and try again from there. If it now succeeds, that was definitely your problem. PrPro does not work well in a networked environment. For Asset archiving, I use a NAS, but always Copy the Assets over to an internal, or at least a non-networked HDD.
Good luck,
Hunt

  • Why do I get "Error - That file is locked" when trying to save?

Everytime I try to save a new sequence in FCP I get an error stating "Error - That file is locked" with no additional elements to determine which file is locked. I haven't changed any settings and I am the administrator of the computer. I was wondering if anyone knew how to fix this.
    Thank you!

Everytime I try to save a new sequence in FCP I get an error stating "Error - That file is locked"
Do you mean when you try to save the project? If so, check the project file (Get Info) and see if it is actually locked.

  • File Error: The File Is locked

This is odd. I have multiple timelines, a nightmare project. I tried to save a the prjoject but FCP6 told me that "File Error: The File Is locked" This has never ever happened before. What has happened? I didn't change a thing! I saved the project with a different name and continued. Still, I'm stressed that this will haunt me when we're doing the online or something....
Guys, do you have a clue why FCP told the file would be locked? The manual says it has something to do with file names but I didn't change anything...

Right click on the project file in the finder and check if the LOCKED tick is checked. If so, uncheck it.

  • CS6 Could Not Save "filename" Because File is Locked

For many years I have been edit photo montages in Premiere Pro. When I would find a photo that needs retouching so I would open Photoshop, retouch the pic, save it, and the new image would magically appear on the PPro timeline. But in my CS6 suite, I get the error message "Could not save "filename" because file is locked, you do not have necessary access permissions, or another program is using the file".  And this only happens when PPro is still open, regardless of where the CTI is on the timeline, or which pic on the timeline is selected. I never had this problem with any other versions of PPro and Photoshop. I don't want to shut down PPro everytime I need to retouch a pic.

That sounds like you've found a bug in PPro where it keeps the files open and locked when it shouldn't.
Unfortunately, you posted in the Photoshop forum where we can't help much with Premiere.
You probably want to post in the Premiere forum: http://forums.adobe.com/community/premiere/premierepro_current

  • PS CS4 could not save because the file is locked

I saw this post, my problem is very similar, but this solution does not solve my problem:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/2121454#2121454
Everytime I try to save a photoshop file I get the "Could not save becasue this file is locked" -- and then I go to save again and it does save, becasue the file has disappeared from where I had originally saved it!
This is VERY irritating, as it is not happening EVERY time I try to save a photoshop file.
In reference to the previous post about this, I do not use Spotlight, and often I do not have anything else open when working on these photoshop files.
I am using CS4, and this occurs when saving files both on and off a server.
I am afraid I will at some point end up losing a file.
    Any suggestions?

No anti-virus software (they cause far more problems than they solve, at least on a semi-secure network), I don't leave Bridge running. iTunes is running, so is InerTrak (time tracking software)... so it has to be Spotlight or Time Machine unless Activity Monitor will lock files. Or it could be Quicksilver, which creates indices like Spotlight.
First thing I'm doing is adding all my hard drives to "Prevent Spotlight from searching these locations" and we'll see if this comes up again.
Could it be the Finder? Does the Finder lock the file while reading the thumbnail?
I'm surprised that there's no way to tell what process has locked the file.
OK, last bit: Why doesn't Photoshop lock the file when it's open so that other programs won't open it?

  • Photoshop Says File Is Locked

When I try to save a file from Photoshop CC I get the following message:
"Could not save as “13_11_30_47_Megan.psd” because the file is locked, you do not have necessary access permissions, or another program is using the file. Use the ‘Get Info’ command in the Finder to ensure the file is unlocked and you have permission to access the file. If the problem persists, save the document to a different file or duplicate it in the Finder."
Not sure what would cause this to happen. Would like to hear any ideas.

First thing is to restart the computer.  This will release the file from any other applications that might have it loaded or focused on.
If this doesn't help, find the file, right click, and chose properties.  If it is Read only, uncheck that.
If still in trouble, try copying the file to another folder.  (drag while holding down the Ctrl key)
If none of the above works, come back.   (I have answered for a Windows system.  If you are on a Mac, say so, and someone else will help)

  • Sometimes cannot save project because file is locked

    Using MAC OS X 10.3.9
    and CS 2
Sometimes it happens in Illustrator that the file cannot be saved, it says that the file is locked for use.
I remember the same problem also from PhotoShop 6 or something on Windows WX computers, so it is not a MAC or Illustrator specific issue.
Any ideas -- other than save with a different name, and remove the locked file after you restart the computer next time?

    JJM,
If you are saving through a network, you may have some funny issues. Saving to the harddisk, and copying through the network, is a more troublefree way.
Old OS? AI10 on XP here.

  • Can't Save Preferences Because File is Locked?

I just had to reinstall after a wipe of my Mac.  Program opens, I can use it, but when I quit it I get this message:
Could not save preferences because the file is locked or you do no have the necessary privilieges.  Use the "get info" command in the Finder to unlock or change permissions on the file or enclosing folders.
I went into Applications, right clicked on the CS5 icon, which brought up the "get Info" box.  At the bottom, under Sharing & Permissions it says I have custome access; Me: read & write
    System, read & write
    Admin, read & write
    everyone, read only
On the "everyone" the only choices I have are read only, write only or no access.
    How can I fix this?

The preferences are not written into the application, so you're looking in the wrong place. The main preferences file for CS5 should be:
    ~/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings/Adobe Photoshop CS5 Prefs.psp
To locate it, copy the following path, press Shift+Cmd+G in Finder, paste the path and hit Go:
    ~/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings/
If you have Ps CS5.1, replace "CS5" with "CS5.1" in the above.

  • ITunes error ".itl file is locked"

For a few days now, when I try to open up iTunes I have been getting an error message
"The iTunes Library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file"
can anyone tell me what this means and if there is a way to fix it? I have already uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes a few times on my system. (version 7)

first check to see if the .itl iTunes library file (or one of the folders above it in the folder heirarchy) have been set to "read only".
but if no joy with that, see:

Downloaded and album from itunes and only half of the songs will download to my ipod.   Error message says file cannot be converted.  How do I fix this or get a refund from itunes?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Try deleting the problematic file (electing to remove original file if/when prompted) and then re-downloading the file from the iTunes store.
You can re-download content purchased from the iTunes store (availability varies depending on location) using the purchased option from the Quick Links section in the top right corner of the iTunes homepage in your iTunes application on your computer.
You can re-download content purchased from the iTunes store (availability varies depending on location) using the purchased option at the bottom of the screen of the iTunes app (or video app) on your iOS device.
If the problem re-occurs, select the content which is causing a problem and use the 'Report a problem' button in Your Purchase History using your computer.

  • Crash when quitting, or error "the file is locked" or "Could not save Prefs" occurs in Photoshop CS5

The following knowledge base article contains a link to a script you can double click to fix any permission issues for Photoshop CS5:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/845/cpsid_84517.html

Further Google searching found this bit of information....and it fixed our problem!
Rather than deleting the files I renamed them as follows Adobe Photoshop CS6 Prefs_old & Adobe Photoshop X64 CS6 Prefs_old
To fix and prevent this error from happening, the user will navigate to:
    C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS6\Adobe Photoshop CS6 Settings
Depending on what version of photoshop is causing the error to appear you will delete the following file:
    Adobe Photoshop CS6 Prefs.psp (for 32bit version)
    Adobe Photoshop X64 CS6 Prefs.psp (for 64bit version)

  • PSCS4 could not save because the file is locked or was left open

    Hello—
I'm getting this error a lot, maybe once out of every dozen attempts to save. This occurs on files that are indeed open... because I've opened them in Photoshop! I open the file, make a change, hit CMD-S and get this message.
The finder's info panel says that I have permission to read and write the file.
This happens with multiple file types, not just one file.
All my work is done locally. Not trying to load or save across a network or any such.
Any guesses what might be going on? Obviously it's easy to work around. I "Save As" and give it a new name, then later delete the old file and rename the new one. Still, it's annoying, especially after waiting 10 minutes for a save to complete on a large file, then having to start over.
    Thanks in advance!
    Steve

  • ITunes on Win 7 64 bit says file on locked disk or wrong permissions

I am using Windows 7 pro 64 bit.
I have been using iTunes forever without a problem,
Recently, probably after a version update, iTunes opens a small window and says iTunes is on a locked disk or the permissions are wrong.
I have read several so-called solutions on many forums and I have found nothing that either works or makes any sense.
I am running the latest version of iTunes. 10.4.0.80
I can play files that are allready in my libray and I can sysnc podcasts to my iphone 4 but I can no longer add any music files to iTunes.
I would really appreciate any help.

It may have something to do with AMDS not started.

  • Word says file is locked by the SAME user trying to open it, but its actually opened by another user

    Person X has FOO.doc open.
Person Y goes to open FOO.doc.
Pop up on Person Y screen, "can not open file, already opened by person Y"
    Person X closes file.
Person Y opens file no problem.
So its not the preview pane issue.
And this happens no matter who attempt to open if its already opened, it always says this ONE user is the person using it.
Both systems fully up to date. Network share from Server 2008. All meta data cleared for doc.
In short, no matter WHO has this file open or WHO tries to open it, it says person Y has it open when it is opened. There are naturally no issues when its closed anyone can open it and it does save meta editor names.
I've also changed the owner in NTFS and this has no impact. Clearing doc meta data, has no impact.
This problem here is when its left open, the incorrect name shows up (the same name every time) so staff has no clue where to go to close the file.
Yes, I've read many threads here and tried those that apply, none have resolved it.

    Hello darrensimon,
This is a bug in Windows 7 (maybe 8 and Server as well). One of my customers are sometimes affected by this. I have not a perfect solution but I've arranged so that the IT responsible person on that company can access the server where
the files reside through RDP (Remote Desktop). Already open is there Shared Folders->Open Files. This gives the IT responsible person means to force closing of an already saved file that for some (bug) reason stays in the cache (MS loves cache but never
updates them) and falsely claims the file is open.
Please try! Shared Folders are reached by right-clicking Computer and select Manage.
    Best regards George
