Exactly What Optimizations Does "Save for Web" Perform?
Hello all!
In Photoshop Elements 5.0, Save for Web works very well for me. I'll likely just use Save for Web most of the time, but occasionally I want to perform only some of the web optimizations on a particular image. I'd like to know how to perform some or all of the same optimizations manually.
Can anyone tell me what steps to take in the Editor (resizing, dpi changes, etc.) manually to mimic the Save for Web function? Or point me to some documentation that explains exactly what Save for Web does to an image?
- JTVHere's the help section on the subject for E6...should be the same. It should be exactly the same in E5...actually probably no difference in any of the versions.
http://help.adobe.com/en_US/PhotoshopElements/6.0/help.html?content=WSCC0C7B37-3AD2-43ca-9 BF0-677BFC551D97.html
Here's a video on using Save for Web.
http://www.photoshopsupport.com/elements/tt/save-for-web.html
If you want to do resizing manually, Image<Resize<Image Size. Here you can set the image's size and resolution and set if you want the image to be resampled or not.
The compression would be done in the file<Save step.
If you save as a jpg, you can set image quality. Notice that below the preview check box the file size for the current setting is displayed. You can also do a visual check of the before and after image by checking and unchecking the Preview box.
Save As...for other file types display dialogs that apply to that image type.
Here's a link about using Image size dialog if you want to get into specifics and the math.
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/331/331327.html
There should also be an option in the Organizer for emailing images. Never used it myself by it's over there somewhere... -
Save for web color shift - only on images smaller than 150x150px
I'm getting a color shift only on small images (150x150px or smaller) when I save for web in Photoshop CC and CS6. That's very weird as it doesn't happen to images larger than 150x150px! That issue happens with images with different measurements as well (e.g. rectangle), the small looks dull and the larger display the right color.
My Color Settings are set to "Monitor Color". Under save for web I have the following options not ticked: Embed Color Profile and Convert to sRGB. (viget.com/inspire/the-mysterious-save-for-web-color-shift)
I'm running the OS X 10.8.4 on a macbook pro, I tested that on both, Safari 6.0.5 and FF.
The squares in the screenshot were saved exatly the same way. The largerer displays the right color #FFCB32, but the smaller displays the color wrong.
I appreciate your help.
Cheers

Mac user, PS CC 2014 latest version. When using "Save for Web" I bring my 900 x600px @72 ppi in to SFW and the output becomes 300ppi. The only way it stays at 72ppi is if I check "none" for metadata. I know to should not matter much, but I would prefer to keep all my web jpgs @ 72ppi. Any solutions?
It opens up as 900x600 @300ppi

Save for Web only let me save as jpg!
For some reason, I got a file that's only let me do Save for Web in jpg format. I choose png24, click save and it changes to jpg in the save dialog. Then I created a blank doc, copy everything from the problem file over to the new file and I can Save for Web in png just fine.
What's going on?In the save for web (SFW) dialog box you can see there are more than one slices. All the linked slices (grayed out) are set to save as JPG. Including slice 1. Therefore, the JPG extension mystery. If you drop down under "slices" after clicking the blue save button, and select "selected slices," you'll get a gif (if slice 3 is selected). Or change slice 1 to a gif in the SFW dialog box.

Save for web - "selected slices" only saves first one selected
This is frustrating me beyond words. I'm trying to export a ton of slices using Save for Web/Devices, and when I choose "selected slices" only 1 slice is actually saved. Has something changed or is this a bug?
Which version of photoshop?
Are you selecting the slices in the save for web dialog using
the Slice Select Tool? The selected slices will turn from blue to orange
when selected.

Save for Web is not displaying white text, only showing the drop shadow of a vector.
I just updated Illustrator this morning and now having this issue. I have two logos on the artboard. Both are filled with white, both have the same small drop shadow. The both show up on the artboard, but when I try to save for web or export into a .jpeg the white doesn't fill in on one logo, but it does on the other.
Anyone have any ideas on a fix?Do the white objects appear when in Overprint mode?

Help please with output settings in Save For Web Photoshop CS4
I am new to CS4 Photoshop so have been watching tutorials on Lynda.com. According to that tutorial I should have the ability to save a photo as an image in the Output Settings dialog box. The only options my panel gives me are:
HTML
Slices
Background
Saving Files
I don't have the option for Images Only or for HTML & Images. Are these two hidden somewhere?
I have been experimenting with Save For Web, but when I click on Save I get a panel that lists all the images saved in a folder named "Photos" but I cannot find in that folder any of the images that I optimized and saved for the web. Where are they to be found? Images that show up in Bridge are not my optimized images either.I would be grateful for some assistance with this. Those settings, HTML, Slices, etc, are the Output Settings you don't normally need to change aonything in there.
Leave it at default and you will just save a version of the image stripped of unnecessary data and reduced to the degree you specified next to the file format choice.
When you press Save in the SfW interface it calls up a Windows OS Save dialog box showing the last used location.
The destination can be changed in the normal way. The Images you already saved will be in the the location that was in that dialog when you saved them.
There is a lot more information in the help pages on this topic! (Hint.) -
There is still an issue with making new actions that include saving for web. While recording the action, save for web functions as it should. But once the action is played, regardless of the original format the saved image should be, it gives it an html filename extension. This can be extremely frustating when you have an action that saves over a hundred images from a single action.
I have seen posts in Adobe forums from many people regarding this very irritating bug, including posts from Adobe employees acknowledging the bug. This was present in the Beta, the initial release, and in this 13.0.1 update. No fix.
http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/ps_cs6_actions_recorded_action_expor ts_html_instead_of_jpg
The employee acknowledged this bug THREE months ago (as of this post), yet all things considered, this doesn't seem like something that would take three months to fix!
I have spoken about this bug with a friend that is a computer programmer. Considering that the action is saving the file correctly, and it's only the name that is not saving properly indicates that this is a superficial error, and not an issue that would require rewriting the code completely. Also consider that this WAS functioning properly in CS5, and that this is a very easily reproducible bug. Adobe should have plenty of information required to correct the issue. I understand that this fix may be more or less difficult to do than what I am suggesting, but it should have been fixed by now.
I don't understand this mentality. Please Adobe... Put CS7 down for a little while, and fix what needs to be fixed in CS6. People (myself included) have paid A LOT of money for your products, it's not unreasonable to expect them to work properly. Bugs happen, it's understandable, but it's not unrealistic to expect a fix for them when the software is as expensive as it is. Is there actually any plan to correct this issue?See also: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4662367#4662367

Save for Web or Save As Jpg for website
Saving photographs for my website. Files are big, 1140 pxls high (width varies with cropping/landscape or portrait). Because of the large size of the photographs on screen, I need a good quality file - minimal artifacting.
Is Save for Web (Tiff or PSD to Jpg) going to give me a smaller file size than Save As Jpg at a similar quality (compression) setting?
Website is Flash, so I'll strip the metadata, but in situations where I want to keep metadata embedded (ie on blogs), is Save for Web still going to give me a smaller but still high quality file?
Can anyone explain what Save for Web does differently to Save As - when dealing with Tiff/PSD to JPG?
Thanks!
Mac, CS5.5I'm not discounting the ability to inspect images in greater detail. I'm just noting that it is inefficient as a designer/publisher to push more data than what the average user needs. That is not how the internet works now or in the future. You did not download the entire Adobe forums for offline reading. You open only the forum pages/discussions that interest you. We invite data to us. We don't have it slammed at us. I would not doubt that your pinch zoom example could be addressed with a javascript event to load a higher resolution graphic between the moment the image is first touched and the point when you zoom.
There is no such thing as unlimited storage and bandwidth. Check your hosting plan for the fine print. BizLand/Endurance hosting will most certainly yank your site offline if it starts to take an unreasonable share of system resources from other sites shared on the same server. I've seen this happen often, especially with Endurance hosting. I'll never use them again.
You may be able to get away with bloated graphics on your own site, which ranks 2,310,866 on alexa.com. But a site like adobe.com (ranking at 65) is going to be much more concerned about image sizes. If you host an image at 300kb that could have been 100kb, you waste 2MB among the handful of people that visit your site in a day. At Adobe's scale, they will have wasted multiple gigabytes of bandwidth.
Bear in mind that you are limited to a certain number of concurrent HTTP connections. This has not changed with the advent of faster networks. While a connection is held up to load a larger graphic, another HTML, JS, CSS or image file has to wait in line to load. Peek into the source graphics used in this page. Jive makes heavy use of css sprites to lessen the dependence on multiple connections.
You will never get away from designing for economy. That is why we use JPG images instead of BMP images. -
Colour issue with 'Save for Web' - Photoshop Elements 6 (Mac)
Cross posted here, but no answer so far. Sorry for cross posting. For me, this is urgent, but I know it's not for anyone else, so apologies for putting 'urgent'.
http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/images-graphic-design-digital-photography/150670-colour-i ssue-save-web-photoshop-elements-6-a.html#post840419
This is a similar issue to this:
Save for web color issue
Except the user who posted the above was using photoshop cs3, and I'm using Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.
When I work on a photo, I get it just right, then go to Save for Web, and the original it previews is loads lighter than the orginal I was working on in the first place. See 'Picture 1' attachment.
I have changed the colour settings on the Save for Web options - I've chosen each one in turn, and none fix the problem.
There seems to be no similar option in PSE6 to this that fixed it in CS3:
IN the save for web box there is a small round button with an arrow in it (near the Done button).
In the list when this button is pressed deselect Convert to sRGB
I used to use PSE2 on a PC, and never had this problem. I didn't need to mess about with colour profiles or anything similar on the PC. The original was the original, not a washed out version of the original. Why spend ages getting the file just right, only for Save for Web to screw it up?
Any advice to fix this would be much appreciated.
ThanksThanks very much for your reply.
I've uploaded the images here:
http://jimpix.co.uk/images/Picture 1.jpg
http://jimpix.co.uk/images/Picture 2.png
I deleted the prefs. file you suggested, and then opened PSE6.
I then tried the profile setting you suggested - but it's not an option:
http://jimpix.co.uk/images/Picture 3.png
I tried 'remove profile' just in case that worked, but the same effect happens on Save for Web.
Not sure what to try next!

Exporting to PNG vs "Save for Web" in Illustrator CC
I am creating small logos for a website in Illustrator CC (one is 135px x 50px), and the quality of the output has been a bit sketchy: not blurry or pixelated, but the text is messy and uneven while previewing in Acrobat as part of a larger PDF, and when previewing the logo by itself (I also previewed it in a browser with HTML to get the same unclear image).
The images have been exported to PNG and JPG at 72 PPI.
When I experimented with the "save for web" option (File>Save for Web), voila! It fixed the issue! I noticed in the dialogue box for "Save for Web" that it saved as a PNG-24, an option not available to export (you can only export to PNG)
My question is: is there a difference between "save for web" and exporting that I should know about before I continue to save ALL my images via the "Save for web" option? It seems strange that the best way to save an image (PNG-24) wouldn't be an option under Export (you can only export to PNG). Why can't I export to PNG-24 in Illustrator?
Thanks for any advice. You can save with different color depth, export, it chooses automatically the higher depth when you choose transparent, and the lower depth when you choose a background color.

QT v10.0 "save for web" creates file names with spaces?
I find it strange that the additional exported files from "save for web" (iPhone, etc) auto exports files with spaces in the file names. Not only that, but changing the file names breaks the javascript.
I work on a server that denies permission to files with spaces in the file names. I know it's a bit archaic - but it's also a long standing tennent of "good HTML" to creates files with a hyphen or underscore instead of a space.
Is this something that can be addressed in the next update? If your using cs5 or cs6 you might try Image Processor Pro which seems to use underscores
and has a save for web option.

So I'm having trouble with this error message coming up when I'm trying to make stuff. (The Operation could not be completed") At the moment I have been trying to make a fairly large giff, that, for whatever reason is 400mb, after i go in to save for web and attempt to optimize it, i get this message, it has worked before, however i can't seem to save my file as a gif, if you happen to know how i can solve this as well, i can only seem to save it as HTML or JPEG.
I have tried re-opening PS
My System info off PS CC I have seen this problem posted here before and it was solved through lack of memory, however i have 32gb RAM so i figure that is not the issue, is there a way to allocate more memory to PS? Thanks!

Same system, no changes at all, I have existing graphic files I have created and exported to Web & Devices before without an issue. About 4 days ago, now when I open the same files and try to export them I get this error. I'm just confused why this is happening now and never happened from the very beginning. I never had this problem on my iMac, and was working with the same graphic files again (literally the same *ai files that I am opening now, editing, and trying to export again with those edits).
Hope that clarifies my concern. Just was hoping to know what might have changed in a few days to my system to cause this. -
PS CS6 action save for web error
In Photoshop CS6 actions when we save the image as JPEG through save for web it doesn't work when we run it, instead it runs and saves the image as HTML, i guess some error in it. I tried it again and again but it doesn't remember my save for web settings and saves the images as HTML.
It a new bug in CS6 though when you recorded the action you saved jpeg images to you desktop and you only entered file names onto the save for web action steps the action recorder recorded name.html. I replaced you save for web steps on my machine for my desktop and CS6 recorded name.html. I then did the same with CS5 though I only entered names CS5 recorded name.jpg.
If you expand the export steps tou will see the hard coded file names and extention
An action like this will always save the same files it can not be batch because you recorded Path and Names in the save for web steps. The .html files saved on with CS6 are actually jpeg files and if you rename them hrom name.html to name.jpg you can use them,
