Save for Web is disabled
I downloaded and installed the Picture Package for Photoshop CS4. Once installed the Save for Web option became grayed out and I can no longer access that function. I deleted the preferences to see if that would help; it did not. How can I resolve this conflict?
It's disabled for me today as well. I'm starting to think that it's related to the ACrobat 8.2 update, which caused problems opening CS and CS2 illustrator and Indesign, which is listed as an issue http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/534/cpsid_53468.html
That fix resolved my problem of opening Indesign and illustrator cs2, but today Photoshop Save for Web is broken. I'm hoping they are related, and a fix for the new issue is forthcoming, but I don't know for sure this is the cause.... or if it it's just coincidence.
Anyone else?

Hello all, all of a sudden my Save for Web is disabled in Photoshop CC for all files, including files that I have sliced and saved for web before. I have tried restarting to no avail. Any guidance is appreciated. Thanks!

Save for Web... and grayscale images
I noticed a strange behavior when I use "Save for Web and Devices" on scanned BW negatives...
I import the negatives via the scanner's twain driver in Photoshop as 16bit grayscale images. My grayscale working space is normally set to the default DotGain 20% profile. When I want to show these images on the web, I use "Save for Web and Devices..." and I have selected the convert to sRGB option. For some reason, the "embed color profile" option is disabled (grayed out) when the document is in grayscale mode.
When I view the the exported image (in a color managed application or browser) it looks too dark and shadow detail is lost. Examining the file info shows that the JPG file is in RGB color space and has the sRGB profile assigned.
When I convert the image to RGB mode before I do save for web... the exported image will look exactly like it looked in Photoshop. Also, the mode change doesn't cause a change in appearance. Also, after changing to RGB, the "embed color profile" option in save for web... becomes enabled.
I experimented with other working color spaces and noticed that an image exported from a grayscale image in "GrayGamma 2.2" working color space will display almost like an image that was exported from a grayscale image converted to RGB.
I would like to understand this behavior and whether it is correct. My assumption would be that a conversion to sRGB during the export should yield the same result like a manual conversion of the image in photoshop but for some reason the results are quite different.
How can I export my grayscale images to sRGB JPG without having to convert to RGB manually while preserving the tonality from the original image?
I have attached an image which I hope might illustrate the effect I'm describing. The crop on left hand side looks as expected and is the result of exporting from an image that was converted from grayscale to RGB mode (sRGB working space) before using save for web...
The image in the middle is the result from converting to GrayGamma 2.2 color space but leaving the image in grayscale mode before saving for web and devices. It is almost identical to the crop on the left. The crop on the right hand side is the result of using save for web and devices from the original image in grayscale mode with the default DotGain 20% profile.
Thanks
/larsThese are my settings. Are they the same in your SFW dialog?

running CS5 on a 64bit win 7 PC....
When I use the 'save for web' option and enable the 'include all the metadata info'
the saved image (jpeg) is not at 72ppi, which is clearly best for the web as that is apparently the idea resolution for our screens.
instead it saves it at 300ppi
(please no debate on 72ppi v's XXX ppi , there are enough posts on that as it is).
but if you disable the 'include metadata option' then the image saves as a 72ppi jpg as i require.
Does anyone have an answer to this.
there is no reason why an image cannot be saved at 72ppi and have metadata.
one assumes that the whole 'save for web' feature is about optimizing the image for that very reason.
this sounds like a bug to me ?Sorry to disagree with some of the above...
there clearly are some useful facts listed.
but you have to ask with ref to the above, why did adobe bother with the 'save to web' option
if most of you seem to imply it really doesn't make any difference on your uploads.
well it does, i have a few photosharing websites
and some display the images very well others do not, they can look quite blurred.
i've been putting this down to resolution. (i've tried using the photo sites options of not adjusting file size
as clearly im aware their own scaling systems could alter the photo's appearance.
so what have i found.
well reducing the image to 72ppi and say 1000 pixels wide looks good online
as apposed to uploading the original which not only is a larger files size it also has different parameters.
you need a different approach to sharpening for online images than for print images.
hence back to the original, adobe implented this feature for a reason, we can all goto edit, image size in PS,easy
but adobe added this feature where you can choose 'bi-cubic sharpening etc etc.....
and this is why i want my metadata kept in place and 72ppi or 96 as stated above. which is why i still believe it to be a bug.
also this also acts as image license protector as i doubt 72ppi (1000 pixels wide) images would be much use in print for picture thiefs.
(72ppi is just a starting base point as i understand this goes back to CRT monitors, other displays can go higher though i doubt 300ppi) -
Adobe Photoshop Elements 2 and 'Save for Web' problem
Hi everyone,
I have used Photoshop Elements 2 for some time with absolutely no problems. However when I try to use the save for the web option I get an 'export could not be completed due to a program error' message.
Nothing relevant is mentioned on Adobe's support site. After having gone through the usual 9 troubleshooting procedure I suspect that there is a problem with the 'Save for Web EL' plugin located in the PE 2 plugins folder. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a way I can somehow find a functional plugin?
Thank you for reading this post.
PowerBook G4 DVI 667 Mac OS 9.2.xI don't use Photoshop elements myself, but from Photoshop CS it works fine. I use JPG compression and optimization. First of all - make sure the file format extensions are all available. Applications/adobe/photoshop elements/file formats AND ALSO Applications/adobe/photoshop elements/photoshop elements only/file formats (here I am assuming the paths are the same or similar to Photoshop). Also, check the extensions disabled folder (Control click on Photoshop and go to package contents). If it's none of these, I suggest you check the settings in Elements when trying to save and make sure you are not using an option that conflicts.
Also, check the Adobe forum. http://www.adobeforums.com
Check for software upgrades also.
You do have enough hard drive space and RAM I assume. If you are using PS Elements and virtual memory is on, you may not have enough phsyical space to save the file (but not likely)
P.S. I see (after i wrote) that you are running 9.2.2 - so the paths will not be the same as if it was on OS X - but they will be similar. -
Save for Web & Devices window doesn't fit @ 1366 x 768
I'm using a MacBook Air running at 1366 x 768, or within Adobe CS5 requirement tolerances, but whenever I try to 'Save for Web & Devices', the dialogue box that pops up is much too big, vertically speaking, for my screen. Attempting to minimize/maximize doesn't rectify the problem--a substantial portion of the window, including the buttons necessary to execute the save action, are in the not-visible portion of the window. If I hit ENTER/RETURN, I can complete the process, but this is clearly a bug: I should be able to resize the window, or scroll within it.
Is there something else I can do, short of pursue a fix from Adobe? Some setting I've overlooked? I'm running Lion, but this problem started on a Snow Leopard install.mcpeckham wrote:
…Yep, that seems to work, but I shouldn't have to hide the Dock, right?…
Wrong! Yes, you do have to hide the Dock if you want to share the Adobe Photoshop minimum required space with Apple's Dock, which in my opinion should be invisible when not needed, which in turn is for a split second every half hour or more. I'm sick and tired of Apple shoving ugly, intrusive OS features down our throats (see footnote * in next paragraph). I want the computer to do what I want, not what Apple wants.

Mr. Schewe explains it more forcefully in his last post above.
My experience over the years has shown me consistently that the more vocal or vehement the complaint, vent or rant, the greater the likelihood of PEBKAC (google that if you're not familiar with the term).

How differs soft proofing in View - Proof Colors and Save for Web - Preview?
Hi, I'm currently confused with one inconsistency. My working space is Adobe RGB and I use calibrated monitor. After I finish my work on image I go to View -> Proof Colors -> Internet Standard RGB. Image looks terribly with the overall violet/purple hue. Then I open Save for Web dialogue, I check Convert to RGB and from Preview options I select again Internet Standard RGB. Now the previewed image looks as expected. The same results I get if I manually convert image to sRGB before soft proofing and saving for web. So... what's the difference between preview in Proof Colours and in Save for Web? Thank you for your opinions.
Hi 21, thank you for your input. All what you say makes perfect sense, it is exactly how it should work and how I expected it works. My problem was, that while testing this theory in practice, I have come to different results. I expected, that if I stick to the theory (meaning keeping in mind all rules you perfectly described) I should get the same result in both soft proof and save for web preview. But... it was not the case. Save for web preview offered expected results while soft proof was completely out of any assumptions and colours were totally over-saturated with violet/purple hue. Also, Edit -> Assign Profile -> sRGB gave another result then Soft Proof -> Custom -> assign sRGB (preserve numbers), but the same as save for web preview. What troubled me was why this is so.
Today I've made tests on hardware calibrated monitor and... everything works exactly as you describe and as I expected.
Then I went back to another monitor which is software calibrated (both monitors are calibrated with X-Rite i1 Display Pro). And again... I received strange results described above. So I did the last thing I thought and disabled colour calibration on that monitor. And suddenly... both soft proof and save for web preview gave the same result.
Probable conclusion: soft proof and save for web preview (together with Edit -> Assign Profile) are programmed to use different algorithm which is evident on standard gamut monitors with software calibration. Question can be closed.
Gene and 21, thank you for your effort. -
IBooks author color shift with "Save for web devices..."
Hi! I'm a web developer and I'm learning to use iBooks. It's a really easy tool, but there is a problem with color management wich is driving me crazy. This happen when I export images from "Save for web devices..." from Photoshop, then drag it to iBooks author.
As I do for web development, I do this:
1) Configure photoshop Color Settings to work with "Color Monitor"
2) Remove any color management from my document
3) Proof Setup > Monitor RGB
4) Disable Proof Colors
5) Use "Save for web devices..." with ICC profile and sRGB unchecked
The exported JPG looks fine everywhere... Photoshop, Preview, Safari, Chrome, FF... but looks washed out when I drag it to iBooks Author. Why?
I solved this issue converting to sRGBIEC61966-2.1 profile and checking ICC profile when "Save for web devices...", but I'm not confortable with this workaround because I'm not sure about what I'm doing exactly, and I am not sure if this images are gonna look good on any device (I only own an iPad 3).
Somebody know a best method to deal with this?
Thanks!Hi KT. Thanks for your response. I'm already using this formats. Anyway, the problem occurs within iBooks Author interface. I mean: I can see the color shift (or washed out...) at iBooks Author at my computer screen. Of course, when I test it on iPad it also looks bad.
It's incredibly strange because the JPGs I'm using looks fine everywhere else except iBooks Author. -
I recently installed PS CS4 and found the Save for Web feature added something very annoying. Every time I select it a dialog box pops up saying "Are you sure you want to erase all save for web preferences". Then you have to click Don't Erase or Erase and then it opens the Save for Web panel. There is no button on that dialog box saying don't show this again. So, how the heck to I disable that thing? It's incredibly annoying. I haven't been able to find an option in Prefs or in the Save for Web panel.
This occurs (on the mac) when you hold down the Command+Shift keys, and click Save For Web from the File menu (give it a shot). This also occurs when using a keyboard shortcut to Save for web that uses Command and Shift together. This is especially annoying since I change my Save For Web keyboard shortcut to Command+Shift+S.
A fix in CS5 would be much appreciated, or at least the ability to disable that pop-up somewhere...
Thanks! -
Hi everybody
hopefully someone here will be able to help. so here's the problem :
Started since photoshop cs4 11.0.2 update, before everything was doing just fine, and I use photoshop everyday.
Now, when I try to save for web I just got png or jpegs because if I try to save gif it just crashes photoshop without showing any error.
it just shut it down. I still can save as gif but without all the tweaking options. I've tried removing the photoshop prefs and also the sfw prefs
and I was happy to see it solved the problem until I restarded photoshop and bam the problem was there again!
any idea ?
nothing else has been installed on the computer, I run XP 64.
thx a lot for your help.
philIs your system allowing you to enable OpenGL? If so have you tried disabling OpenGL or changing any of the "Advanced" modes? Just a thought.
You might want to check for updated video drivers from nVidia, though I don't know how actively they might be updating them for XP x64.

On PSE9 when i click 'save for web' i get the message: 'could not complete the
Export command because of a programe error'. I have tried re-installing but to no effect. This is the third time i have asked this question. is there no help available or is it a silly question or not enought information? Please help someone!Hello Mike,
I think the latest camera raw is 6.4 but I doubt if that would make much difference to your problem.
If I use an image which has too many pixels, I get this error:-
If you use your full size one, I would expect that you should also get it. So if you aren't seeing that then I suspect there must be a problem accessing the image. I suppose that you have plenty of free disk space? How much memory (RAM) do you have?
You have tried re-installing PSE - did you disable any antivirus application when you did it? I don't have problems with antivirus suites but some of them might cause a problem.
You can probably guess that I am struggling to suggest the cause of your problem.
One other thing that sometimes work is to create a new account on your PC to see if that still suffers the same problem.
I'm hoping that someone else can jump in with some help.

.gif preview slow in Save for Web
I am having an issue in Save for Web where the .gif animation preview works very slow and choppy. I am an advertising designer and many times I need to work on animated .gif banners. I am working with Photoshop CS6. When I play the animation in the frame timeline the animation speed works as intended, a little choppy but the timing isn't too bad. However when I go into the Save for Web screen and play the animation it always appears a lot slower and looks choppy. Anything se to 0.0 or No Delay runs as if its set to .1 seconds. Now if I export the file and open it in Chrome the animation speed seems to go back to normal. This wasn't always the case, I tested this 2 or 3 months ago and the animation speed in the export was also slow and choppy but it must have been fixed in one of the updates since then.
My issue is I don't want to have to preview everything in Chrome after I export it, and then possibly have to go back and tweak it then save again, preview again etc. I have never encountered this issue in previous versions on Photoshop or other machines. Ususally my experience has been the opposite, the frame timeline has always been slower, but previewing in Save fro Web has shown a pretty accurate preview.
I also have a HP laptop running Windows 7, photoshop CS6 and I don't encounter this issue at all. It seems that everyones default answer on all of the forums is "different browsers handle .gif animation speeds differently, etc.." but int he past I have saved a .gif on my mac and it was slow and choppy in the Chrome, then I saved the same file on my PC transfered it back to the mac and previewed in Chrome and the animation played quickly and smoothly.
I can't see it being a hardware issue because the machine I am using is farily new. iMac Late 2013/2013, 3.4 Ghz Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675MX 1024 MB, running OSX 10.8.4 Mountain Lion.
Could it possibly be a setting or preference that needs to be changed? As I stated above it seems that now when I export the animation works fine in the browser the preview is just slow, but I have read that many people are having this issue so hopedully someone will have a solution.I don't use a Mac but the first the first thing I do when I have performance problems with Photoshop on my PC is to do some house cleaning. I reset my Photoshop Preference to a saved copy I made when Photoshop was working well. I Also clean my disk up clearing caches and temp files so the plenty of scratch space. I close all applications and look at the machine CPU utilization. Then try Photoshop to see if it is back to its normal performance.

LIke I said, I sure hope somebody can help me out. Any suggestions would be appreciated. The only thing I could think that might be causing this is the fact that I upgraded to Maverick (Apple OSX) about 2.5 weeks ago. But this problem didn't start until about 3 days ago, so surely that's not the issue. Anyway, figured it was worth mentioning.
Please let me know.
Thank you,
Jamie Richards, a fellow Photoshop addictI found the solution (took forever to consolidate all the answers) for OS X 10.9 + Maverick. Finally!
1. Change permissions (as AOTPR says) to your User/Library/Preferences file so that your admin and user (the one you are using) has read + write permissions within the Get Info pane (command+I). You may have to add them with the sign.
2. Delete Adobe save for web 12.0 Prefs & Adobe save for web 13.0 Prefs files within the User/ Library/ Preferences folder. These may be hidden for some people, so when in a finder window, hold Option(alt) and click Go from the main top menu (keep holding Option/Alt) and click Library — the full Preferences folder should open for you.
3. Change the view when in Save for web pane in PS. If you have it in Cover Flow — it won't work. Change it to another view like List or Columns view.
Presto! Works for me on Maverick.
Thank god. It took forever to get this cleared up!!

How do I USE the slices I generate in Illustrator from "Save for Web"?
I am having trouble understanding slices. I want to save a raster graphic from Illustrator that takes advantage of "slices" to put hyperlinks to certain labels. I am working on a map with about 20 links to a website describing recreation sites shown on the map.
I am able to do this by bringing my map as a graphic into InDesign, and setting up links to text or picture boxes there. I can export an interactive PDF of the map, and the PDF has live links.
but the client's web host can't post the PDF with active links. (client would have to link from a static image to a copy of the PDF on a separate website). We may do this as an interim measure.
So I'd like to go back and figure out how to use slices in Illustrator to do the same thing. I've seen web pages that have a series of sliced-up graphics; I wouldn't wish that on anyone but it's the solution I want to get to.
Illustrator tutorials and help describe how to set up slices, how to type in links in the "slice options" dialogue box (in objects/slices... pulldown menu). And describe how to "save for web" to generate JPEGs or GIFs of the individual slices.
My available options in AI CC 2014 (I checked in CS6 too) are to save the slices as images. (Helpful articles which say to save as HTML and Images...aren't helpful if I don't have that option).
I get a folder called images, that contains about 74 sliced JPEGs of various sizes and shapes. I don't see, nor see an option where I can ask to make...a file that pulls all these together into a single image, with clickable links. There's no HTML file (or way to create one that I can see).
What am I missing? What application would I use to toss this folder's contents together. Or how would I create the HTML or envelope file within Illustrator?
I have entered URLs for links in three or four different places but haven't found a way to export them in such a way that they are actually useful.
Thanks for your help.
Ben PEaseThanks, I am a print guy, mostly. I've almost figured out CSS for my did-it-myself website, so buttons, actions, slices, etc. are new angles for me. I am hip to the general concept that Adobe likes certain applications to do certain things. It was certainly easier to set up links from InDesign.
In what application would you suggest I DO foolishly create my interactions (raster graphic with multiple links? Does it work any better in Photoshop? The client's web host does the web design (some sort of template thing) so I don't believe I have the option of drawing hot-spots like is (was?) possible in Dreamweaver.
(That may be a question for the web host).
One of the problems with "discontinuing this functionality" is there are about half a dozen how-to guides online that suggest it is still possible to kluge a solution in AI (sometimes in older versions) and it's hard to tell well-executed funtionality from abandoned functionality since Adobe hides instructions in multiple, random dialogue boxes, and left so many of the pieces strewn about the current versions of AI.... How would we really know? But I am not all that surprised they did. -
Preview options in the "save for web" dialog
According to the reference, the previews in the "save for web" dialog are there only for showing how the image can be seen on various platforms with different gamma values.
But, if we open a non-sRGB image (ProPhoto for example) by the "save for web" option, the preview options (other than the "use document profile) in the "save for web" dialog assign sRGB color space to the image even when the "convert to sRGB" option is unchecked ... this causes unrealistic, dull previews for the image.
What is the reason behind that PS assigns sRGB to the image previews if we uncheck "convert to sRGB" option?Basically, how animation works with GIF and Save for Web in PSE is that each layer in your document is a frame of animation. So you see one layer, then the next, and so on. You should not see the contents of the last frame/layer when looking at the current/next frame of the animation.
Could you post a screen shot of your layers panel and give us a link to the GIF that is coming out of Save for Web?
