Save for Web: Save Named Slices Only

Most often, when I save a sliced document, I only care about certain slices. It would be really nice to be able to save only the slices I care about enough to name.
The document I'm working on today has 25 named, layer-based slices (buttons) which I'm exporting in four different states. Being able to export only the named slices would spare me the tedium either of selecting 25 slices each time I export, or of waiting for and then deleting a slew of unneeded slices.

Or maybe just give a text box that behaves like a simple search engine, allowing AND (+), OR (^) and NOT (-) operations, along with asterisks (*) as wildcards.
NOT "Layer *"
And it would give you a preview as you type in the text box, showing which slices apply to this search term.
-"Layer *"
This would also produce the same result.

  • CS5 save for web bug with slices 1 png, the rest gif

Do me good forum, this is my first post from 112 degree AZ.
I'm trying to "save for web" slices in illustrator cs5. I optimize the images to transparent .png in the sidebar in the save for web dialog box. Then I click save. And I do the "user slices" option in the NEXT dialog (hello complicated process, but it makes sense to me). 5 slices should be output. 5 are. But only one is a png. The rest are gif files. And not transparent.
That makes me to throw an anvil through the floor of the USS(R) Adobe.
But rather than going through such extreme measures, I'd figure I'd post first.
I guess in the time I researched and wrote this post, I could have saved each individual slice with the proper optimization settings, but what fun would that be? And maybe I'm just plain missing somthing and someone will say, hey "footheadleg" your a total moron. The checkbox to save ALL the slices for your desired setting is at blah blah blah.
Do it. Shame me. And then, my problem will be fixed at last. MUwhwhwhwahahahaa.
FREE GIFT: cmd+shift+d changes illustrators white artboard to transparent pixels. I learned that becasue I thought maybe I had a white layer showing on accident. I didn't. That's because I'm perfect. Perfectly human.

Footheadleg, you have so much to learn, and so little time. Let me teach you my ways. Though while on Illustrator's main canvas it may seem that you can change settings of each slice, you can't. I know, there are little icons top left of each image, one looks like an email symbol, and it would seem you could just email the slice to a friend.
Pretty soon you'll be able to "Like" the slice on Facebook. Or post it to your del.i.cious account. Or tweet it. Or 17,000 other VERY VALUABLE shares. But Footheadleg, these symbols mean nothing to you, except that they are slices.
HOWEVER, when in "save for web" mode, you can in fact change the settings of each slice. Here's what you do. Press k. (slice tool selector thingie) then hop over to the sidebar and click on the settings you want. Do this for EACH slice. I know, it would seem easier if there was a checkbox that said "apply to all slices," but why make things easy?
Plus, Illustrator is a rad program, so don't knock it, unless you can design something better. And you can't. So get over yourself and enjoy the pain
    Yours truly,
    Yourself.

  • Automated Save for web + All user slices + Preset?

I've got a large PSD templade filled with web slices, each containing web button graphics.
These are always saved in three states: "-off", "-on" and "-active" in .png format.
To speed things up, I've prepared:
    * 3 "Layer comps" (that toggles layers on/off and adjusts visibility/effects)
    * 3 "Save for web settings" that appends the "-off", "-on", "-active" suffix etc
However, each time I want to update these three sets (and that is often!) I have to jump through hoops to get it done... applying layer comp + File > Save for web + selecting "all user slices" and "preset" + confirm overwrite.
After a few hundred times it gets tiresome :-)
Bottomline:  Is there any way to make an action, or similar to do all this in a single keystroke?
    Robert K

I don't know why I didnt't think of this already
It works a treat, at least with CS4 (haven't tried it elsewhere).
I ended up doing three actions for each of "off", "on" and "active". The action only toggles the appropriate Layer State, than Save for Web. It seems that only User slices are saved, and no dialogs or anything flashes by.
    Great! Thanks.

  • How to use an iPad 2 for web search (via 3G only) while using AirPrint via Airoprt express wifi (NOT connected to the internet)

Heres the setup: I have an IOS 7 iPad 2 that I want to use 3G only for web searches/ emails while using an Airport Express generated wifi bubble (without any connected internett) to print web seraches via airprint to a wifi printer.
The problem: the ipad deafults to searching via the AE's wifi and vainly waits for the non existent interent to connect. It ignores the available 3G internet.
The workaround: a) turn off the AE's wifi, search the web via 3G b) once I have something to print, turn the wifi back on and print via airprint and the AE's wifi to the printer.
The question: Is there a way to turn off the AE's internet access. Using Airport utility, I have tried setting Bridge mode and static IPs to no avail. There is no turn-the-internet-off tick box.
In the ideal setup I would like the ipad 2 to search the web via 3G only (straight away versus waiting vainly for the AE to find it!!) and then print the results via the AE's wifi and airprint without having to toggle wifi on and off all the time.....
    Thanks in advance,

  • Server for Web hosting and email (only  for 3 domains)

    Hello guys,
I want to setup mac mini server for my company which will host only 3 web sites and email server for the moment.
    What i got so far,
    01. I have Macmini server
    02. I have static ip address
    03. I have router (vigor 2700) which forward the external ip address (my ip start from 87.197.XXX.XXX) in to my Server using DMZ hosts
(So i have 192.168.1.20 as my server ip address(local) and when i point 87.197.132.48  from out side (using web browser) i can see Mac server page)
So can i setup the server using this infomation. Just want to make sure that i allready got everythign to setup the server.
1st question : Do i have to all information to start this ?
Please help me with this first, then i will have more  questions latter.
    Thanks in advance

Migrate out of 192.168.1.0/24 (and 192.168.0.0/24) as those will cause problems for your eventual use of VPNs to connect into your network.  Most every coffee shop and home network on the planet uses those, and the IP routing inherent in a VPN doesn't appreciate finding the same subnet on both ends of the VPN.  The earlier you get your network out of those particular subnets - and preferably over to a subnet somewhere within the 172.16.0.0/12 or 10.0.0.0/8 blocks - the easier the network migration will be.
Set up your internal DNS services and your external DNS services (I'm assuming your local DNS server will not be delegated to serve DNS publicly) and particularly establish an A record in (at least) your public DNS referencing your mail server, and then enter that mail server A record entry as the MX mail exchange host for each of the three domains, and set up three virtual domains on the mail server.
If your gateway is sufficiently capable, you can have a separate domain or subdomain within your network, and have all your "public" names hosted externally.  You can then use example.com outside, and example.net inside, and any example.com references from the outside or from the inside will resolve to your external static IP address and (if your gateway has the ability to "reflect" traffic to the public static IP) it'll all work most easily.  If your gateway isn't capable, then you can also host the example.com domain internally in your local DNS server, but that means maintaining two parallel sets of DNS entries.  Or you can get a more capable gateway.  (I did not research your gateway.)
You'll want to read the Apple mail service documentation around alias entries, as there are two ways to do this.  See the stuff around pages 73 and 77 in that document.  Better still, just skim that mail service administration manual; that'll get you an introduction to the whole area and some familiarity with the general terms and concepts, and that manual is fairly readable.
Then read the TopicDesk Spam Documentation.
If you don't have IT staff around (some of your time, as well as that of others) to dedicate to this mail server management (including user management, troubleshooting, backups, etc.) hosting mail externally can be a good trade-off.

  • Save For Web - saves original file name not new name

Hello, when I use Save for Web with slice(s) the original file name (appended with the slice number) gets saved even though I have changed the file name in the save dialog. This only happens about 50% of the time. Sometimes it saves as expected - with the new file name. I am using the default settings in the save dialog all the time.
Stranger is that if I am saving (for Web) say 10 slices some will be named with the original file name and some will be saved with the name I gave it in the save dialog.
This was happening on my Windows XP sp2 system when I was saving to an Ubuntu server (local network). So when I switched to a new computer running windows 7 and saving to a new server (windows 7 pro) I thought it might fix the problem - but it has not. So there must be a setting I am missing - though that does not account for the intermittency of the problem. I have changed settings under "custom" in the save dialog and things do change except the original file name is persistent not the new name I have given it.
The PSD files come from a designer using a Mac.
    My system:
    PS 10.01
    Windows 7
    AMD x2 duo 250
    4 gig Ram
Thank you for any help you may provide
    jim

I made an action to save large batches to a designated "pics" folder. Then when I'm done with a big batch, I just move them to the original folder and let the OS overwrite them. May seem like a lot of work, but I can do a batch of 500 gallery thumbnails in about four minutes and it takes about 30 seconds to move them and replace the originals.

  • Save for Web Error, Unique

In my PS CS5 trial (Mac 64 bit): When attempting to Save for Web, or save a PNG or BMP I am receiving the below error. It is very generic and unlike the others I had been reading about the similar write permission issue.
In attempt to resolve this issue I have updated Photoshop and even tried Write Permission fixes in vain. I have also gone into the application settings and changed the program to open in 64 bit.
I have been scouring the forums and the web for someone with this exact problem and have not found a solution. I am not the admin of this machine, but have read + write permissions. Your help is greatly appreciated.

    from adobe:
you'll have to delete prefs manualy
    Save for Web
If you try to save  named slices to a directory where that filename already exists,  Photoshop will fail to prompt you with an overwrite warning. You will  silently overwrite the existing file.
We have removed the shortcut used to delete the preference file for  Save for Web in Photoshop CS5. To manually delete this preference file,  navigate to the following locations and delete the Adobe Save for Web  12.0 Preferences file:
Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Adobe\Save for Web\12.0\Adobe Save for Web 12.0 Prefs
Windows Vista or Windows 7: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Save for Web\12.0\Adobe Save for Web 12.0 Prefs
Macintosh: Volume\username\Library\Preferences\Adobe Save for Web 12.0 Prefs

  • Same old "save for web" dilemma

I did a quick test for saving an image for web viewing, here's what I did, step-by-step:
    - Before opening or creating any document, I chose sRGB as my RGB working space
    - I created an new 2"x2" document from scratch (obviously containing the right color space - sRGB).
    - I pasted an image from another file into this document, and chose "Convert." (The other file was an AdobeRGB profile, but I'll assume the color space of the copied file is irrelevant.)
    - I saved my 2x2" file as a Photoshop file, from which I would create 2 different types of jpegs.
    - I created the first jpeg using File>Save As, and named it "saveas."
    - I created the second jpeg using File>Save For Web, and named it "saveforweb."
    Results:
When I open my "saveas" file in Photoshop, I see that it opens in the sRGB color space. (I check in the lower left corner, where I have "Document Profile" visible. All seems good with this file… on to the other file.
When I open my "saveforweb" file in Photoshop, I get the box that says 'the document does not have an embedded profile.' I choose "Leave as is" and open the file. It tells me in the lower left corner that the file is "Untagged RGB (8bpc)."
Question: Why does not the Save For Web technique embed the original profile? FYI, when I did a "Save for Web," I clicked the little arrow in the upper right corner and chose "Use Document Color Profile." I also clicked the other little arrow in the upper right corner and chose "Convert to sRGB."
What's up with this?? Is it typical? If I were to post each of these online, would they look the same? I can only preview on my Mac (Safari shows the "saveforweb" image as slightly brighter and more vivid).
But my real question is why the "saveforweb" file won't retain the profile. Is it even possible?? One would think so. Any advice please!!

I found the solution (took forever to consolidate all the answers) for OS X 10.9 + Maverick. Finally!
    1. Change permissions (as AOTPR says) to your User/Library/Preferences file so that your admin and user (the one you are using) has read + write permissions within the Get Info pane (command+I). You may have to add them with the sign.
    2. Delete Adobe save for web 12.0 Prefs & Adobe save for web 13.0 Prefs files within the User/ Library/ Preferences folder. These may be hidden for some people, so when in a finder window, hold Option(alt) and click Go from the main top menu (keep holding Option/Alt) and click Library — the full Preferences folder should open for you.
    3. Change the view when in Save for web pane in PS. If you have it in Cover Flow — it won't work. Change it to another view like List or Columns view.
Presto! Works for me on Maverick.
Thank god. It took forever to get this cleared up!!

  • Preview options in the "save for web" dialog

According to the reference, the previews in the "save for web" dialog are there only for showing how the image can be seen on various platforms with different gamma values.
But, if we open a non-sRGB image (ProPhoto for example) by the "save for web" option, the preview options (other than the "use document profile) in the "save for web" dialog assign sRGB color space to the image even when the "convert to sRGB" option is unchecked ... this causes unrealistic, dull previews for the image.
What is the reason behind that PS assigns sRGB to the image previews if we uncheck "convert to sRGB" option?

Basically, how animation works with GIF and Save for Web in PSE is that each layer in your document is a frame of animation. So you see one layer, then the next, and so on. You should not see the contents of the last frame/layer when looking at the current/next frame of the animation.
Could you post a screen shot of your layers panel and give us a link to the GIF that is coming out of Save for Web?

  • Save for web - "selected slices" only saves first one selected

This is frustrating me beyond words. I'm trying to export a ton of slices using Save for Web/Devices, and when I choose "selected slices" only 1 slice is actually saved. Has something changed or is this a bug?

    Which version of photoshop?
Are you selecting the slices in the save for web dialog using
the Slice Select Tool? The selected slices will turn from blue to orange
    when selected.

  • Slice tool is arow in save for web and............

Hi, besides the fact that slice numbers are not showing up here in vista 32 CS4 (show slice number is activated in the preferences and show slices in view as well and I did a reset !) I encountered a other strange thing in "SAVE FOR WEB & DEVICES" when you select the slice tool it doesn't change in a slice tool but stays a arrow and works like a slice tool.
Hope someone comes with a solution for the slice numbers, they only show up in the "SAVE FOR WEB & DEVICES"dialog. But it's not very handy to work without them.

Have you patched Photoshop to version 11.0.1 and have you updated your video drivers?
Is OpenGL enabled in Edit > Preferences > Performance.

  • CC: Selecting slices in "save for web"

    Hi,
today, I tried to use the export function "save for web" in Illustrator CC 17.1.0 for the first time in many weeks.
I created a document with some slices. Strangely, in the dialogue of "save for web", the image preview isn't shown in the original size although the setting is set to 100%. It seems, like the preview is only about 50% of the original image size.
Furthermore, it is impossible to select the specific slices for renaming it. Also setting up the preview to 200% doesnt solve the problem.
I already uninstalled illustrator with the uninstall file and downloaded the software from the cloud again. But the problem still exists. I also created a complete new document without success...
I don't get the point. Does anyone have an idea how to fix it?
    I'm using Mac OS 10.9.1.
    Thanks!

I'm seeing this on both my HiDPI laptop display and an external display where the pixel ratio is 1.
I use Save for Web almost every day, so I suspect there was a bug introduced in the latest version of Illustrator. I've also found that when vector graphics are copied and pasted from Illustrator into Photoshop they come in at slightly smaller dimensions. Could be related?
Using File -> Save Selected Slices... in Illustrator seems to work fine, however.
I'm also on Mac OS 10.9.1, running Illustrator CC 17.1.0 on a Retina MacBook Pro, Mid 2012

  • Why are the dimensions of my slice being reduced by 'Save for Web'?

    Hey
When I create a slice and then select 'save for web' the selection i'm trying to save is reduced in size. Originally I only noticed this when I was finding the saved file in the folder, but I now I notice that in the preview of the save for web menu the size is smaller than the actual slice should be.
Any ideas what could be causing this? I'm using the latest version of Photoshop CC. It doesn't seem to be happening on our PC, but on both the Macs we have tried we are getting the issue.
    Cheers

None of my pictures that I uploaded into iPhoto are in my Finder under Pictures.  Should I copy and paste my folders from iPhoto into here, in case something happens to my iPhoto program (in addition to backing them up onto an external hard drive like I already do)?
No, that's just wasting space.  A back up needs to be on a different disk.
Your photos are within the iPhoto Library.
