Save for Web stopped saving @ 72 dpi. Help, please!

I am running Photoshop CS6 on Windows 7. I had two prior installations of photoshop on my system due to upgrades, so finally decided to unistall CS3 but kept CS5 just in case. Now for whatever reason, CS6 goes through the motions of the Save for Web dialog but doesn't change the resolution of the outputted file to 72 dpi. It keeps it at 300. It had been working perfectly until now. I went back in and tried it in CS5 and that still works fine. Any ideas? I'm getting so frustrated! Is there a setting somewhere that I messed up?
Thanks in advance!
Michelle

DPI is irrelevant unless you're printing. It's the number of pixels in the image which counts.
More pixels = bigger filesize.
On the web 100px x 100px is always the same size on screen (regardless of DPI which only comes into play when printing).
See if this helps

  • CS4 PS crash in 64 bit Save for Web but not 32 bit - help!?

Anyone got any ideas please on how to stop Photoshop CS4 crashing on Save for Web in 64 bit version of Windows 7?
Running Windows 7, 64 bit Pro with both 64bit and 32bit versions of Photoshop CS4 installed.
The problem: I design a website, add slices etc as I've done for the last 10 years, go to Save for Web and as the dialogue box is opening and the blue bar at the bottom starts to show it loading, it gets just over half way and then crashes, saying the error message 'Adobe Photoshop CS4 has stopped working'. No solution available and then closes. Does this quite a few times (say 20-30%) of the time but not always. Tried the same PS document running 32bit version of Photoshop CS4 and it saves for web fine, never any crashes, only using the 64 bit version of PS. Need 64bit to take advantage of extra memory etc and one of the reasons the machine/ software combo was bought for.
Running a brand new (well about a month or so) Dell T3500 dual Xeon W3505, 12gb ram, Nvidia Quadro Fx 3800, Raptor HD etc built to run Win 7 Pro and CS4 Extended. I suspect the spec isn't to blame, checked all the hardware etc, no plugins that arent standard with a new install, so no obvious reason I can tell of as to why its not working. Not much else installed and started playing up before I installed other bits of software so doent make sense it might be other software cauing any problems.
Put a support query in and basically got told CS4 wasnt tested with 64 bit CS4 and directed to a possible support solution to 64 bit running on xp/ vista with general advice. No use whatsoever.
Firstly, anyone else having the same problem? Secondly, anyone know how to solve this? If its any help, I've pasted the Action Center info on one of  the many crashes:

The graphics card supports the new GPU features but tried with and without those turned on - still the same problem. Tried all sorts of preferences on and off but still no joy.
Would really appreciate any help/ advice on solving this.
    Thanks.

Been reading up on that c0000005 error and in all the Operating systems it is a access violation. There are a lot of hits about windows 7 and software not being allowed local access and be saved that way too. What I think is that windows 7 is not allowing it for some reason in 64 bit mode or some security setting in the local needs adjusting?
    I found this interesting fact
I was reading where testors were monitoring how windows 7 firewall allows DRM to run in the firewall. All the software they tested asked first for firewall permission (my software on my system asked first so know it is true on my other system). However, according to the testers, with PS CS4 the DRM does not ask to run with firewall premission. Windows 7 just bypasses the asking part and PS CS4 DRM gets firewall access.
    Edit by me:
Google the offset code and your the very first to report it.

Could anyone please explain exactly what he needs to do in order for these photos to look the same as the originals on my computer, basically no lightness shift?  Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

Because the WWW is based on untagged (2.2 gamma) sRGB - your genius is probably sending you untagged sRGB if they were Saved for the Web (that's how I prepare my Web color).
Your Mac display should be profiled to 2.2 gamma (you are likely at the old default 1.8 gamma now if you're seeing a lightness shift on untagged sRGB)...if you want "your color" back in Photoshop, you will need to (re)Assign the sRGB profile...

  • Save for web export crashing photoshop

    HI
In was wondering if anyone could help me.  I have written a code that edits images but i am having trouble with the save for web export everytime it gets to saving it photoshop just crashes. I have tried a few different ways of coding it but all of them end of crashing PS and i am at a loss as to what is wrong.
Here is the code that i am using:
set webFolder to (choose folder with prompt "Select the folder to link to")
                                            set webOpt to {class:save for web export options, web format:JPEG, quality:89}
                                            set theDoc to current document
export theDoc in webFolder as save for web with options webOpt
any help would be great. I have tried it on CS6 and CC, both of which crash.

You need to pass a full file path to the export command… Probably need to change the extension too.
set myFullFilePath to (path to desktop as text) & docName
export in file myFullFilePath as save for web with options myOptions

  • Save for Web Matte Not Working?

    Hi everyone,
I'm having problems with the Matte settings in the Save for Web section to create a smooth transparent .gif image. None of the black matte is showing up in the zoomed preview (picture attached), nor is it saving when I render the file. The adjusted transparent image still appears with the white jagged halos on a black web page background, even though I set a black matte. Any clues as to what I'm doing wrong? Thanks for any help.

Sorry, I haven't used the matte feature of Save for Web, so I can't help you there.  (I only save in PNG format.)
This is an interesting question, though, and I spent a few hours working on it -- I'm still assuming that you're starting with a logo supplied as a bitmap image (GIF or JPG) on a white background and want to clean it up so it works on a black background.
    FWIW, here are my thoughts:
I found a logo on the Web to use for practice:
This is a tough example which has a lot of problems, as you can see from this enlargement:
The colours "bleed" when next to each other, the colour areas have darkened edges, the colours (and even the white background) are "splotchy" and not uniform, the edges are anti-aliased and have multiple colours in 'em, and so on.
The fact is that a supplied image like that is only suitable for use as a guide for completely re-creating the logo.
You have two choices for re-creating it:
Work on it as a bitmap image.
Work on it as a vector drawing.
Either way, you're going to do a lot of handwork.  I haven't found a way to automatically correct the problems that I mentioned.
If you work on it as a bitmap in PSE, you'll wind up re-drawing by hand each pixel (or each edge of a colour selection, which amounts to about the same thing).
What I wound up doing is using a vector drawing program (CorelDraw, since I can't afford Illustrator) to recreate the logo.  Even though I'm quite rusty, it didn't take too long to use the Bezier curve tool to create the coloured shapes.  I simply used CDR's bitmap trace tool to vectorize the type.  Once I had the vector drawing, everything is wonderful because vector shapes are resolution and size independent.  It was a snap to export the drawing for the Web as a transparency-enabled PNG image without anti-aliasing, reducing it by 85%:
    Hope these thoughts help....

  • CRASH when making a new folder in save for web

When going into Save For Web, and saving a picture, and clicking the little "new folder" button, Photoshop crashes and closes instantly. This is 100% reproducible.
Can we expect this to be fixed?
    Details:
    Windows 7 x64, fully updated
    Photoshop CS5 x64, fully updated
    Memory is plentiful
    Disk space is plentiful

Always nice to get an upgrade, but it's a rather costly operation, one might say
I still think this is an issue Adobe should be fixing. This problem (for me at least) did only occur in the save dialog while in Save For Web, and not in any other save dialogs, such as the regular file->save as. This made it very hard for me to believe the problem is in my system. Although something might be triggering it, that something could hardly be the cause, since, like I said, the problem only occurs in SFW and only ever in Photoshop, and only in CS5. EVERY other program works fine in this regard.
So please, Adobe, fix this bug before forcing folks to initiate an expensive upgrade...

  • Save for Web & Devices problems

Hi. I have sliced all my pieces in PS. I then went to Save for Web and Devices. For some reason my slice tool cannot be grabbed (I click on it and it doesn't turn to slicer). Also, the color table is all gray. No colors. I am going nuts! I have tried everything to make them appear.
I am very new to PS. I am taking a DW class (didnt know I had to have extensive knowledge in PS first, so now learning both programs for school), and my project was due last night. I need to hand it in Thur night but I can't do the things I need to in order to get it ready for DW.
Please help somebody! Thank you so much!
    Penne

There is no slice tool inside Save for Web and Devices dialog, you should slice the image first and then select File > Save for Web & Device

I am using adobe photoshop cs6. I am facing a problem. When i save any image as "save for web". After saving image it show cropped. An image show many parts of the image after saving the image. Please help me. Thanks in advance.

Just go back in photoshop and use the Slice Select tool, then just click and select the slice and hit delete - if you're not sure which one is the active slice just right click and find the one that has the Delete Slice option.
It's possible you either added the slices by accident or if you received it from someone they just had the slices hidden. For the future, you can go to View > Show > Slices to display (or hide) slices.

  • Help please with output settings in Save For Web Photoshop CS4

I am new to CS4 Photoshop so have been watching tutorials on Lynda.com. According to that tutorial I should have the ability to save a photo as an image in the Output Settings dialog box. The only options my panel gives me are:
    HTML
    Slices
    Background
    Saving Files
I don't have the option for Images Only or for HTML & Images. Are these two hidden somewhere?
I have been experimenting with Save For Web, but when I click on Save I get a panel that lists all the images saved in a folder named "Photos" but I cannot find in that folder any of the images that I optimized and saved for the web. Where are they to be found? Images that show up in Bridge are not my optimized images either.I would be grateful for some assistance with this.

Those settings, HTML, Slices, etc, are the Output Settings you don't normally need to change aonything in there.
Leave it at default and you will just save a version of the image stripped of unnecessary data and reduced to the degree you specified next to the file format choice.
When you press Save in the SfW interface it calls up a Windows OS Save dialog box showing the last used location.
The destination can be changed in the normal way. The Images you already saved will be in the the location that was in that dialog when you saved them.
There is a lot more information in the help pages on this topic!  (Hint.)

  • Illustrator CS4 - when I save for web my vectors are pixelated. Help!

I recently updated to CS4 (I know, I'm still behind the times) but ever since when I 'save for web' my vectors appear pixelated. It seems worse when I want a transparent background. My images are for web and this just won't do.
I've read a lot on this and can't seem to fix my problem, but here is what I have tried: Anti-Alias is checked, view > pixel preview, view > overprint preview, object > rasterize, and probably a few other things. If anyone can help me with this issue it would be GREATLY appreciated!! I've attached an image so you can see what I'm talking about. I created this schematic in Illustrator CS4 and saved for web with a transparent background and, as you can see, it appears pixelated everywhere.

I'm not sure what you're looking for but here is my save for web options. Let me know if you're looking for something else. And thank you for trying to help!!

  • Save For Web Just Stopped Working

    PSE3 on Mac
This'll teach me to stop for lunch !
I was quite happily using the feature this morning, but after lunch
it too had decided to take a break. I reset preferences and repaired permissions but it still refuses to cooperate. The error message I get
is ' could not complete the operation the file was not found ' which is
very strange as I'd already saved about 20 images for web from the same
    folder this morning.
    Any suggestions ?

    Spooky !!
Save For Web has decided to return from lunch with no further
intervention on my part - I had carried on working on files throughout
the time this feature wasn't working
    Now,although I don't want a cure,I'd be interested in any explanations
as to why my normally very stable PSE3 has decided to play up.

  • CS5 ''Save For Web & Devices'' Help

    Hello
This is my 1st post on this forum, Hope its in the proper place
When i'm finished processing images on CS5 i click on ''Save For Web & Devices'' to save it & also to remove the EXIF image info, As of late though it has not been removing the info from the image when i click save. Anyone had any issues with this before, Any help on this issue would be great
    Thank you

EXIF is a file format used by digital cameras to store metadata associated with an image.
This metadata can be any of several things:
    date/time
    f-stop
    shutter speed
    camera make/model
    lens make/model
    GPS location
Some photo libraries (such as Flikr) will display the EXIF data alongside the photo.

  • Any way to change PPI when choosing save for web?  Seems to force 72 ppi/dpi

I'm doing business cards for clients and submitting them to the printer in PDF which works out just fine.  However when I submit a jpg as a proof (to show orientation) they complain that I should do a higher resolution for the proof.  Illustrator seems to force 72 dpi/ppi (I realize these aren't exactly the same thing) when I use save for web.  If I use "export" instead Illustrator doesn't seem to honor my crop dimensions and I get an export that bares no resemblence shape-wise to the original document.  Why can't I just put 300 ppi in somewhere and get a higher res output?  Thanks for your help!
    Patrick

It was because the business cards had a particular curved die-cut and they wanted to know exactly where I wanted the cut.  I sent them a 250pixel wide one and they bitched about it but did it.  Yes I sent them a PDF for the printing and it turned out just fine... I just wanted a quick raster export with curved die-cut lines and couldn't do anything other than 72dpi apparently.
edit: Was also trying to send a client a quick jpg or png proof today and couldn't do anything bigger than 72 dpi (in save for web)... when I tried to export a png instead the cropping was way off.  I remember crop-area-make in older versions of Illustrator but apparently they took that option out while still requiring it

  • Image resize quality not saved in Save For Web Preset?

    L.S.,
I have been working on an Action to create 12 separate PNG's for further use in my icon-software. What I do is basically this:
Start out with a 256x256px image, save it for web four times in steps from 256, 48, 32 and 16px, (32-bit)
apply some masks / layers, save it for web again four times from 256-16px,  (8-bit)
set the mode to indexed colour / apply other masks and layers, and save it for web again from 256-16px. (4-bit)
I let the sizing be done in the Save for Web step.
The 256-sized pics give me no problem as they are not scaled down.
The 32-bit pics give me no problem as they are scaled down, and antialias comes along, but they have 8-bit transparency: no problem.
In the 8-bit and 4-bit versions from 48-16px, I definitely want no antialias in the sized down versions. So I set the resize quality to 'Nearest Neighbor'.
However, Photoshop seems not to be able to remember different resize qualities in one Action.
In every Save for Web-action that I do, when I set it to resize, it does so. But the resize quality is not taken from the setting. It seems to be taken from the last used or recorded setting.
    That is pretty annoying, because:
    - When I let the downscaled ones of the first 4, be downscaled 'bicubic sharper'
    - And I let the downscaled ones of the second 4, and third 4, be downscaled 'nearest neighbor'
Next time I run the Action, all downscaling is done by 'nearest neigbor'. That ruins my downscaled 32-bit icons - they get jaggy.
If I alter the steps in the action manually and set the first ones to 'bicubic sharper' again, suddenly all downscaled ones are done by 'bicubic sharper'.
That ruins my downscaled 8-bit and 4-bit icons: they get antialias, to lime green, and that shows...
I can save Presets in the Save For Web dialog, but as the groupbox already tells me: these presets only apply to the Image quality parameters, not to the sizing parameters. Those seem to be taken from the last run.
I have one alternative to this: before every Save for Web step, I downsize the image myself, and undo the history step after saving. It's quite some work and I would just rather see that the sizing parameters saved in the Preset!

That's never been saved as part of the S4W presets. Bloody annoying.

  • Stop Action in Save for Web

Is it possible to insert a "stop" in the action for save for the web, just before actual save. Basically i want to be able to name my file manually (use distinctive names), but just to automate the picture size option and quality (which don't change). I know that i can write an action for an image resize and than save it with my desired file name, but i was wondering if i can do it all in "one shot" without the altering of original image.

The best you can do is tell Photoshop to show the save for web dialog box
and wait you to make your changes and then click on save. It will not put in
things automatically, you would have to set all options you want. You can
turn on the dialog box by checking the box next to that step in the actions
palette list of steps in the action.
