Save for web - wrong name on file
Hi experts...Thanks so much for reading this. Really appreciate.
Here is one:
Summary: saved slice has the name of the previous version of the file plus slice number, and not the name given to the slice.
Details:
Starting with a Photoshop file called Myfile.psd.
Rename this file, as decide it is not a good name. Rename to FinalFile.psd
Now:
Saving for web and devises/select slice/save/give slice a specific name/save only image selected
Called this file: header.jpg
Here is the problem: file name of new saved file is not the name we just typed in. It is not header jpg.
Instead itis the name of the first version of the file (Myfile.psd, not the even the new renamed name: FinalFile.psd) PLUS it has the slice number
It has therefore the name:
Myfile_01.psd
It does not have the name we just named it: header.jpg
What is wrong? Is this file corrupted?
If so, how does one uncorrupt it, so that the name is correct?

Yes, it seems you are right, even tho photoshop gives you the option of renaming the slice, it did not register the name and did not rename the file.
Since posting this, Noticed when double clicking the slice, in the 'slice options' window that opened, the name of the slice was still the name of the original file, before I renamed the file. Photoshop is still remembering the past.
This has happened before, and so this time thot would check if anyone knew why it was happening. Especially since just got a new computer and just installed cs5. Happened sometimes w CS3 too.
It seems there was just some funny thing going w that one slice.
When saving other slices, the renaming did work, even tho it did add the slice number on, which was trying to avoid that. Also the other slices were not remembering the initial name of the file.
The current solution has been to rename the slice in the 'slice option' window.. That seems to save when closeing the file. Not only that, when renaming the slice, the slice number, like _01, did not get added to the slice. So hurray for that....

How to save for web AND overwrite original files with Action?

I want to compress a batch of images with "save for web" using a Photoshop Action, and I also want to preserve my folder structure and overwrite source files. The structure is important because it's complex and needs to be structured this way.
The Problem:
When I choose "save for web", I must define a destination. What happens is all optimized files from within the structure are saved in a single location.
Here's an example of the folder structure
Folder A
- Subfolder A1
- Subfolder A2
Folder B
- Subfolder B1
- Subfolder B2
-Subfolder B2.2
Folder C
-Subfolder C1

Bug Report: "Save For Web" creates undeletable temp files
This is an odd one but sometimes (maybe 1 in every 30 times) I am doing a "save for web" from PhotoShop it creates (in addition to the requested *real* file) an undeleteable temp file in the folder where the real file is being saved.
Here is how one looks:
This is what I see when I try to delete it:
Restarting the Finder from Activity Monitor makes this temp file disappear.
This started happening since I upgraded to an OWC Mercury Extreme hard drive so I suspect it has something to do with how files are deleted from it (but I have no evidence whatsoever to support this. :-) )

Action to save for web leaves too large file size
HI
In earlier versions of Photoshop I could create an action to batch save photos for the web, setting them to save as 600 by 400 and they would end up about 70kb. I could also stop the action and adjust the file size to a set size. With CS3 no matter what I do the files always end up about 500kb!!!
Is this a bug in CS3 or do I have to do something different?
I have to put the files on my old computer to run the action still in Photoshop 7
thanks for any help.I tried to create a 1 pixel blank and it wouldn't save it, I tried a 5 pixel blank, still wouldn't save it so used the Save As and got a 40kb jpg file. Ran the Action and it ended up as 76kb.
Created a 30 pixel blank square and it ended up 40kb too.
Get info on the files reveals the stated file size is correct.
I created and ran the same action on my son's intel iMac running CS3 and the same result. Tried a tiff instead of a jpg and it ended up even bigger. When paused at the Save for Web window, it says the original file is about 800 kb (the reduced size to 600 by 400 from the original image) and it predicts the final web size will be about 65 to 75kb as it should be, depending on the image. But always ends up about 500kb.
Going through the process manually produces the correct result.
This is getting rather frustrating!!!!!
Would someone be able to try creating the same action on their intel mac running CS3?
All I am doing is reducing the size of say a 3000 by 2000 pixel image to 600 by 400 pixels, applying a very small amount of unsharp mask, then saving for the web to about 70kb. I have the original images in one folder on my desktop and another folder to place the converted files into.

Save for web not overwriting original files in cs6
It doesn't always happen but when I use save for web to save an image it goes through all the motions as normal but when I go to view the image, I find that it hasn't overwritten the original file. Has anyone else experienced this, it has happened to other people in the studio too so it might be something to do with our setup?
Are you on a mac? If you have a finder window open of the file you are trying to overwrite (or the file is open somewhere else), and it is selected in that window with the preview showing, Save For Web does not overwrite it as it's technically "In Use". Either close the window or deselect the item. This seems to happen to me more when the file is on a server but can also happen on the local disk. I am now in the habit of saving as filename_1 and then renaming them afterwards.
I would imagine you would get a similar story on a Windows machine but I have no way of testing this. -
Is it possible to scipt "save for web" in a specific file size?

it needs to save my work as a jpg in a specific folder with a maximum file size (82kb) ...
how can i achieve this step?

As far as I can tell the task requires saving, checking the resultant file’s size, if it offends save again with different settings, check … until the requirement is met. -
Another save for web devices error - File already exists?
I've been using the same Photoshop CS4 on Windows 7 for about a year now, and only now this problem occurs to me.
Whenever I try to preview gifs in any browser (tried a few), I get the error message "Could not complete this operation. A file by this name already exists."
Tried renaming the files, replacing them, creating new ones, tried to enter preview on old files that previously worked, but always get the same error message.
I did some research and tried deleting both the main Save for Web and Devices pref file, and the other so called "hidden one" in the plugins folder. I've tried reinstalling photoshop from scratch. Nothing works.
Please help me. I'm near desperate :/Ah, sorry, now I see what you're doing.
I haven't had the issue myself, but I can guess that one or more of the temporary files it needs to create in order to show them in your browser must be failing in creation. Check the permissions on the folder identified by your TEMP environment variable - you should have Full Control of your TEMP area..
Specifically, it creates a "Save for Web" subfolder there. You might be able to delete that entirely in order to start afresh.
Just to test, I've opened Photoshop CS4, entered Save for Web & Devices, and pressed the Preview button myself and it worked okay here... Your TEMP area is likely different than mine.

Illustrator Batch - Save for Web PNG - File won't close
I am trying to convert several AI / EPS files to PNG file at 800 px.
I've tried using a batch incorporating either export as PNG and Save for Web - and neither on is working well.
The batch I built simply transforms the graphic to 800 px - Save for Web - then closes the file. Or exports the file as PNG at 800 px.
The problem is that the Save for Web Dialog box opens up each time or it simly doesn't export a file. I've tried checking off the various different surpress options in the batch dialog box - but nothing seems to work.
Your help is greatly appreciated.Thanks for your answer but the images are not for web.
I need to enlarge them because they have a lot of detail and I need to send them to someone to be checked. The only place I can save as Gif is on the "Save for Web" dialog and Gifs have the smallest size/best quality ratio for the images I need.
I don't understand why when executing the batch process it stops at the "save window" waiting for me to click on "Save".

Save for Web keyboard key stroke not worky
I'd swear I've asked or seen this discussed in these forums...but I can find no thread, even when I search for my own screen name. At any rate, I think it also happened to me back in version 6. I'm now in version 8 on a Mac.
The symptoms are the same as the last time this happened. The "shortcut" key strokes (on the Mac) are command + shift + option + S (probably use 'alt' instead of 'option and "control' instead of 'command' on Windows?). This will usually show a brief darkening of the File menu, but nothing else happens. Until...the same keys are pressed again! Of course, mousing to the menu item works fine, but I have managed to avoid carpal tunnel syndrome and still press all four keys with one hand! Sometimes I get my cat to help...
Since Adobe is gracious enough to provide about three dozen various pref files, it should be a breeze to start archiving them and deleting the originals. NOT! However, in my searching for the likely pref file, I have discovered that the "Adobe Save For Web 8.0 Prefs" file seems to be AWOL on my System! I have over a dozen backups of that file in Time Machine, despite the fact that they all show exactly the same Modified date, which would normally be the only reason TM would save another copy of the file. This may also indicate why the settings for the Save For Web dialog never remember the last used settings; the file thinks it is getting written to but never changes its Modified date even thought that 'state' is obviously recognized by the OS. But that's all beside the point and I digress...
SO...does anyone remember the 'trick' for getting PSE 6/8 to remember the Save For Web keystrokes the first time they are used, instead of waiting for 'verification?'

You may be correct, but I've had no other problems after all the different un-install methods. The only pieces that are hard to find are those that Adobe chooses to hide deep in System areas. I suppose since they were one of the first Mac developers, they think they have special capabilities to put stuff any and every where they want. As well as special dispensation to do things anti-Mac ways. I can't claim to be a power-user, but I have never, ever felt the need to purchase/use any special "uninstaller" app. And I can't think of another app I've ever owned that even needed an "uninstaller" for it. That includes Canvas, php, Apache setups, etc. Frankly, and this is simply my opinion and obviously of little importance to absolutely no one else, the way Adobe does things seems to be extremely un-organized, not-well-thought-out and downright non-Mac. The only thing even marginally close to their confusing instal/uninstall process is Stanford's Folding@home set up. It sometimes requires a few Terminal commands...
I will perform a search for that CS4 "clearscript" thing, however. Thanks!
Even the response I got from my Support post assured me that...
reset/restore the Preferences, click Yes or OK . Now try to use the "Save for Web" keyboard command by pressing "Alt+Shift+Crtl+S". I am positive that after following the above steps your issue will be resolved .
OK, I get the rest/restore step. but what does the "alt+shift+Crtl+S" have to do with anything? It certainly is not the keyboard short cut for the Mac version of Elements. Perhaps the chap didn't notice the details in my message or the hardware/software information that came with my request for help. I find it strange that somehow the language differences cause the tech's positive belief that his steps would fix the issue that he also presents:
If the issue is still not resolved then please send us the below mentioned information so that we can provide you with the best possible resolution:-
1. Have you recently made any changes to your computer?
2. Are you logged in as administrator ?
3. Does the issue persist on another system or another user account ?
4. Do you get any error message while pressing the combination of "Alt+Shift+Crtl+S" keys on the keyboard? if yes then send us the screen shot of the error message that you are getting
5. Please provide the exact system Configuration with details along with the Versions.
Every single one of those questions was included with the initial message I sent.
I suspect that the problem is, indeed, in my System, somewhere. I installed Elements on my wife's MBP and it operated normally, even the command+option(alt)+shift+S command. So, when I get some time this week, I'll start up in Safe mode and see if that helps. If not, I'll start removing third-party Pref Panels and apps, a few at a time. If none of that helps, I may try retrieving files from Time Machine. As a last effort, I can always do an Archive and (re)Install of Snow Leopard. I'm just not sure it's worth all the effort to get one measly short cut... The only thing I know for sure is that I will not be seeking any more help from Adobe's "tech support." Why bother, they don't/can't even read the messages their own system sends! -
Save for Web error: Could not complete operation
Hi everyone.
I'm having trouble using the Save For Web function on Photoshop CS6. The initial dialog opens fine and I can select any file type to save to etc.
Once I click 'Save...' I get the error "Could not complete this operation. An unknown operating system error has occurred."
I have looked up this error and from previous threads I have tried deleting the Save for Web library files and restarting, however this doesn't work (Unless I am deleting the wrong file?).
I'm running a 2.6 GHz Retina Macbook Pro with the latest update installed for Photoshop. I have 16 GB ram.
Strangely, I have a PC running the same version of Photoshop CS6 and it works fine for this function.
Any idea what this could be? I have posted my system info below.

Installed TWAIN devices: NONEI found the solution (took forever to consolidate all the answers) for OS X 10.9 + Maverick. Finally!
1. Change permissions (as AOTPR says) to your User/Library/Preferences file so that your admin and user (the one you are using) has read + write permissions within the Get Info pane (command+I). You may have to add them with the sign.
2. Delete Adobe save for web 12.0 Prefs & Adobe save for web 13.0 Prefs files within the User/ Library/ Preferences folder. These may be hidden for some people, so when in a finder window, hold Option(alt) and click Go from the main top menu (keep holding Option/Alt) and click Library — the full Preferences folder should open for you.
3. Change the view when in Save for web pane in PS. If you have it in Cover Flow — it won't work. Change it to another view like List or Columns view.
Presto! Works for me on Maverick.

where are the preferences for "save for web and devices" to be found? I am using CS4, PC Windows Professional XP
The actual save for web preferences file for photoshop cs4 should be in
C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Application Data\Adobe\Save for Web\11.0
You should also in photoshop cs4 be able to reset the save for web preferences by holding down the Alt+Ctrl keys while selecting Save for Web & Devices from the File menu in photoshop cs4. -

Every time I save I get an "Adobe Save For Web Error" that says "Could not complete this operation. An unknown error has occurred."
I haven't the slightest idea what to do or what happened but I can't save anything and it's starting to really frustrate me. Below is the system info:

LIke I said, I sure hope somebody can help me out. Any suggestions would be appreciated. The only thing I could think that might be causing this is the fact that I upgraded to Maverick (Apple OSX) about 2.5 weeks ago. But this problem didn't start until about 3 days ago, so surely that's not the issue. Anyway, figured it was worth mentioning.

Jamie Richards, a fellow Photoshop addictI found the solution (took forever to consolidate all the answers) for OS X 10.9 + Maverick. Finally!
1. Change permissions (as AOTPR says) to your User/Library/Preferences file so that your admin and user (the one you are using) has read + write permissions within the Get Info pane (command+I). You may have to add them with the sign.
2. Delete Adobe save for web 12.0 Prefs & Adobe save for web 13.0 Prefs files within the User/ Library/ Preferences folder. These may be hidden for some people, so when in a finder window, hold Option(alt) and click Go from the main top menu (keep holding Option/Alt) and click Library — the full Preferences folder should open for you.
3. Change the view when in Save for web pane in PS. If you have it in Cover Flow — it won't work. Change it to another view like List or Columns view.
Presto! Works for me on Maverick.

GIF/Save for Web problem (PSE 7)
I've tried searching for an answer to this problem but nothing seems to address quite what's happening.
I recently had to replace my laptop, and switched from Windows XP to Windows 7. I transferred PSE 7 from the old system to the new system, and have had no trouble with it- until now. I have a 52-layer Photoshop-format image that I would like to save as an animated .gif, with each layer as a different frame. File >> Save As has the option to save Layers as Frames, but if I check it, then click "Save", nothing happens. Nothing at all. On my old system, I'd get a new dialogue with options like quality, duration per frame, loop, etc, but that's not happening anymore, and nothing saves (if I go to find the new .gif file, it's just not there). If I DON'T choose "Layers as Frames", the .gif dialogue comes up just fine, and it has no trouble saving as a static .gif. But it seems that it's just refusing to save it in animated format.
I'm having the same issue with "Save For Web". Neither the file menu option or the keystroke command will bring up the dialogue to let me save it that way. It thinks for maybe a second, but then doesn't do anything else, and doesn't save the image.
I've already tried resetting the layout, just in case the dialogue box was shifted somewhere I just wasn't seeing, and I tried resetting the Save For Web preferences, but neither of those things worked. Any explanation as to why an animated "Layers as Frames" .gif is the only format that isn't saving properly?
I've also tried opening old animated .gifs that I created with XP, and they will not re-save as animated .gifs either. I get the "Do you want to save the changes made" dialogue, but clicking "Yes" doesn't do anything and doesn't save the updates. I'm at a complete loss for why this function no longer works.Glad you got it working.
It takes some getting use to the differences between xp and windows 7
in regards to permissions and all that stuff. Even when you install
programs on an administrative account, problems still persist sometimes.
What i do is always install programs by right clicking on the installer and
choosing Run as Administrator even when installing on an account with administrative
permissions. I seem to have less problems doing it that way. Anyway, just something to
keep in mind for the future.

Rendering glitch in Save For Web?
Hello,
When I "save for web" with some particular files, I get a rendering glitch in the image that takes the form of small, colorless horizontal lines.

Where do these come from? What can I do about it?I have this exact issue.
Happens in "Save for web" and in "export". I managed to keep CS4 still installed and took the exact same file and "exported" it and "saved for web", and no issue at all in CS4. This is def. an issue that has popped back up in CS5 then.
On my attached image there is no gradients or special effects, just clipping masks.
I've tried the new options they have in save for web, "Art Optimized" and "Type Optimized". The issue does not happen in "Type Optimized" but the quality in type optimized is lower and it renders the exact same as the vector file appears(so colors bleeding out a pixel behind some objects etc.) The issue does happen in "art optimized".
Issues happens when saving in png and jpg format, with or without transparency.
I've attached an example, notice the lines in her face. (same as initial attached image)
So is this a "wait for an update" sort of scenario? or is this a "use a different program to save for web" scenario? -
Loss of saturation in Save for Web
Hi,
Objects that I export as PNG24 files using Illustrator's "Save for Web" feature result in files that a considerably less saturated than they appear in the Illustrator file (I'm working in RGB).
What's up? Is there a quick/easy way to make sure the raster files look just as saturated at the Illustrator objects?

create your Web artwork in the sRGB color space (not Adobe RGB)
Save for Web.
You may still see some color shift when you save the image with no profile, but the above steps should minimize it.
