Save Formats for DVDs for use on Computer

I'm using a pre-loaded DVD template to create a DVD with a Title menu, scene menu, etc. Is there any option for me to save this format for use on my computer only?
Instead of burning this to a DVD, I'd like to save the final product as a file with the same function as the DVD (usable menu, skip to set scene markers, etc). Does that make sense?
The idea is to not have to burn 10+ DVDs, but save these files to a flash drive and access them through a computer or TV.

Assuming Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit for the moment and DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc....
1. You could consider Publish+Share/webDVD which is really a flash file that comes with disc menu of your choice.
The saved folder from the process can be played back on the computer using Foxfire and Internet Explorer. I do not see you playing that back on TV.
2. In Premiere Elements, if you export Timeline content to file saved to the computer hard drive, menus are not included.
Please review the above. I am think about this some more.

Exporting for DVD without using iDVD

I've downloaded 5 x mini DV tapes (from a client) onto iMovie because I was having major audio syncing problems using Final Cut Pro.
Using iMovie proved the perfect solution.
What I'm not sure about now is how to export the file, so that I can burn it onto DVD using Toast and so that it self loads when put in the DVD player.
In FCP I export 'Quicktime Movie' and take off the 'Make movie self contained' option. The file I get is then great to put into Toast as a video then DVD-Video, which when played in a DVD player self loads.
This system is great because it avoids having to go through the DVD authoring phase and for these small client jobs it is really necessary to cut down time.

Don't try 'drag and dropping' the iMovie project file (the icon with a star) - that file won't work.
I don't like to contradict you, Fred, but since Toast 6.1.1, FOR SURE, the project-file with the star-icon does work with Toast.. that updated version "catches" the ref.mov from inside automatically.... no need to export anything manually...
but, as you have mentioned before:
select in Toast "video", select "dvd", THEN drop project into Toast...

i have final cut express hd...what would be the best export settings to get nice highquality dvd?
i am going to put about 25, short 5 minute clips in the dvd..will it be able to fit and all be a nice quality?

Yes, provided you use dual layer DVD-R and your burner supports this newer media.
Otherwise the most you can burn to DVD-R SL media is 120 mins. (but keep in mind menus, titles, photos, etc all consume space as well thereby reducing the available amount of run time / QT Playback.

Should i format my ipod video using my computer?

My ipod has stopped working with itunes. I have tried all the steps on the other posts but still had no luck. My girl friend has the same ipod and has had similar problems, but following the steps to fix it has always resolved the problem.
When I plug my ipod in to my PC and select it in my computer, it says 'this device is not formatted, would you like to format now?'
As a last resort before sending the ipod back, I’m thinking of trying this but I’m not sure if this will make it worse.

Export Quicktime File for DVD for Composer

My Composer wants a quicktime file of my film. I know if I export it the way that I usually would for iDVD, the file will be too large to burn onto DVD. Any suggestions about what to do? If he doesn't need the full resolution, how can I change the size & res options before I export it?

Most composers want a frame-accurate, or at least a frame-referenced, piece of video. With your extreme compression, she might not get what she needs to do accurate syncing of the hero shot s with the hero music and effects stabs.
I'd ask her for more information and I'd also think about providing a copy of your film with a timecode overlay.

There is no need for you to use your computer to set up an iPad for your mother. You can do it over the air with WiFi and then you do not have to worry about syncing your content to her device - which I would not recommend anyway.
Why don't you just talk mom through it over the phone. It is a very simple process. Take a look at this. Or if she insists on you setting it up, do it this way.

Finder restarts every third second - cant use my computer!

I have a really big problem that makes it impossible for me to use my computer. Since yesterday Finder has been restarting about every third second which makes the icons on the desktop dissapear and appear and also the upper menu is doing the same.
I have a video clip of it so you can see the problem.

Note: At this point your computer should restart. Log in how ever you normally do and see if the same thing is happening. If not, stop here. Otherwise repeat step 1 and then go directly to step 3 below.

When I make iMovies and copy to disc, they record fine for my computer but I can't get them to play on my DVD for televison. Is there a standard format for most DVD's and if so what is it.

I recommend that you use SHARE/TO MEDIA BROWSER in Large size. Then in iDVD, you open the Media Browser and navigate to your project. You can drag it into your iDVD project from there.
You can also use SHARE/EXPORT MOVIE and save to the location of your choice. You can then drag and drop into iDVD.

Best Compression To Use In QT For Saving Videos For DVD

I own a number of DVDs of compliation videos that I'm extracting each video using Cinematzie to create a library of videos clips. If I save a video without any compression, its alsmost the size of the entire DVD. But I also have a choice to save the video clip with compression but am given a large number of choices to select from. I would like to compress a video clips to the best quality and sound possible to eventually burn my own DVD of my favorites. I've has a lot of success with H.264 for the purpose you're speaking of if you're just archiving them to play back on the computer. If you want to output them to dvd to eventually play back on a conventional dvd and ntsc monitor, consider DV/DVC Pro. However, I've also read that H.264 is going to be the standard codec for some of the new HD DVDs (like BluRay).

Best Export Settings for DVD burning and Computer viewing

Hello,
I am trying to export a 1 hour video that I need to be compatible with standard DVD players as well as viewable on any computer.
Original footage was shot with a Canon 5d Mark ii in 24fps.
I have done all of my editing in Premiere Pro CS6. From there, I exported a high quality file to bring into Media Encoder (for trials of best output). My master file from Premiere was exported with the Preset MPEG2. The only thing I changed in the preset was VBR from 1 pass to 2 pass.. This gave me a 6.2 GB file.
I then brought that file into Media Encoder where I have tried the following presets:
MPEG2-DVD - Match Source Attributes
MPEG2-DVD - NTSC 23.976fps Widescreen High Quality
MPEG2 - HDTV 720p 23.976 High Quality
MPEG2 - NTSC DV High Quality
These settings have encountered various issues.. some have significant banding, but most importantly, none of them will play on my DVD player when I burn them to a disc.
The discs I am using are Sony DVD-RW with a 4.7GB capacity.
Where am I going wrong here? From what I've read, the format needs to be MPEG2 to be viewed on DVD... Sorry if I sound ignorant! This stuff is tricky..

First off, don't export your timeline and then take the result to AME to re-encode, this is compressing your video twice and degrading quality (not to mention takes extra time and hard drive space). Always export direct from Premiere to Media Encoder. If you must use an "intermediate" file as part of your workflow, perhaps to archive a completed video that might later be exported to other formats, then use a lossless codec such as UT or Lagarith (free downloads).
For DVDs, you MUST use "MPEG-2 DVD". Other forms of MPEG-2 are not appropriate, as the official DVD specification requires that the MPEG-2 file has certain attributes. Not recommended to use "Match Source" for ANY export, just choose an appropriate setting as needed.
This should be correct for your application - MPEG-2 DVD > NTSC 23.976fps Widescreen High Quality
If you want to encode a DVD file over 1 hour in length, then you will need to adjust the encoding bitrate so the resulting file will fit the disc. Rule of thumb is 560/minutes = bitrate, but you might round down the result a bit to allow for menu overhead and such, depending.
Once you export the "MPEG-2 DVD" file, you can NOT simply burn that file to DVD media. That is only creating a DATA disc and it will not be playable in a DVD player (though a computer or PS3/PS4 may work since they can play most media files). To make a DVD that works in all DVD players (and meets the spec), it MUST be "authored" in a program like Adobe Encore. This compiles your content and menus and all that and then writes the result to the disc in certain way so that DVD players can read the disc. If you open any DVD on your computer, you will see a folder called "VIDEO_TS" and inside that there are .vob files and others. That is a proper DVD. And once you have a proper DVD, you can't simply copy the VIDEO_TS to another disc (as DATA), you must tell the burning software to create as a "VIDEO DVD" and not DATA, or it again won't be readable in a DVD player. Very picky spec, sorry.
When using AME to export MPEG-2 DVD, it will create two files, audio and video (.m2v and .wav), you will then Import both of those into Encore together. Note that you CAN import other formats into Encore, such as .avi but Encore will then transcode that to the correct MPEG-2 format anyway, so best that you take charge and create the right media in the first place in AME before you get to Encore.
EDIT: In AME, any time that your source is higher resolution than the destination, such as HD to DVD, you can check the "Max Render Quality" button in AME to provide the best downscale quality.
EDIT 2: I see you're using DVD-RW media. That is fine for experimenting, but for delivery to clients always use good quality DVD-R or DVD+R media. DVD-RW may not have the best compatibility with players and costs more anyways. DVDs are so cheap now that I just proof to DVD-R and toss the bad ones, up to you.

For the VHS movies, try googling Elgato - they make a number of USB devices that are supposed to be able to do this, but check what formatting options they offer : you will want a device that converts directly into .MOV files (to play in QuickTime), or into H.264 for iTunes / iPods, etc.
As for the vinyl records - first you need a device that will convert the analogue output (phono) into a digital form and will connect via FireWire or USB. The Griffin iMic is one such USB device (if still available?). From there you can use the free Audacity download to read in the signal and convert to a suitable format, e.g. MP3. (You will need to use SysPrefs / Sound to switch to an external audio device, instead of your Mac's built-in mic.)
(Wait - you said "digital turntable" - software already on your Mac? How do you use a virtual turntable to play vinyl?? Unless what you really mean is an analogue turntable that has a CD writer in it, or a USB connection to connect the turntable's DAC output to a computer?? In which case, either use your turntable to burn CDs, or connect via USB and the free Audacity software to convert the signal to music tracks and output as MP3.

Choosing Format for DVD Output

I get very confused by all the format options. What I want to create is a DVD for playback on a high-def display. I will make the DVD in iDVD or something after I render out my movie.
I don't know if they will be playing back on an anamorphic DVD player or not, but definitely not Blu-ray. It will be a hi-def widescreen display. Please help me get set up for this.
Do I select a 1920 x 1080 resolution? Should I choose "HDTV 1080 29.97" (NTSC here)? When I render, do I do a field render? Lower field first?
Or should I choose a "NTSC D1 Widescreen" or some other format?
I just dont know how to get started.

Is the "high-def display" 720p, 1080i, or 1080p? That would help determine what sort of settings you're using, IF they're not using an ordinary DVD player.
You say they're not using a Blu-Ray player, but are they playing it off of a computer?
If they're playing it off of an ordinary DVD player, PLEASE tell me it does upconverting. If not, your video will look like crap. SD content, as Adolfo said, is the only kind that can be played off of a DVD. And SD content looks like hell on an HD system without upconversion. (Upconverting is still nothing to write home about.)
Again, if they are using an ordinary DVD player, just follow what Adolfo said.
When you render out your final product from AE though, I would suggest you render it out as a lossless AVI or Quicktime and use Adobe's Media Encoder, iDVD, Encore, or some other program to do the MPEG-2 (only format allowed on DVD's) encoding. AE can't do multipass encoding which greatly improves the visual quality of MPEG files.

Should I export using 1080 or lesser quality for DVD?

I have a Canon HD camera that takes video. My goal is to put my videos on a DVD. When I go to Share and then click Media Browser.... Do I convert my iMovie videos to iDVD at 1080 or is that a waste of time and space?
When I hit Share and then Media Browser, it offers me many quality choices. Which should I choose for my goal?

I haven't made a DVD in years and don't know what types of compression iDVD uses to "make things fit".
That said you should make your own tests and see what works best in your workflow (as AppleMan1958 suggested).
iDVD was created when people still (mostly) used CRT's and a set top device where used for playback. CRT TV's aren't around much anymore and they had an "overscan" area that wasn't displayed during playback. Newer DVD players, like BluRay, can "upsample" from older DVD formats like those made using iDVD and present a pretty nice picture on a modern TV.
I know you want "quality video". But there is where you find the trade off. Years ago many camera companies sold us devices that recorded directly to DVD. Record and playback nearly instantly on your CRT display. They were expensive junk, IMHO.
You want the bset quality?
Export as "true HD 1080" via QuickTime formats and use your computer monitor or Apple TV to your display for playback.

I just want to use a picture as my DVD cover, and then insert a slideshow. Also, when I try to burn my 8.5gb double sided slideshow, all that burns is the music. It is a large slideshow, a memorial on the life of my now deceased brother. This means a lot to me and to my family, and I am having so much trouble trying to burn it. I have gone into Project View and selected appropriately. The bar shows I have room to burn this DVD, but it does not burn. I have burned so many DVDs in the past, but this one just will not burn. I am so confused at this point. I will say this is the first 8.5gb I have attempted to create and burn. My specs list a 7.7gb or 4.7gb as operable....but there are no 7.7gb dvds. I had to purchase 8.5gb. Help? What am I doing wrong? I have spent so much time on this, and just cannot figure it out.

Final Cut is a separate, higher end video editor. The pro version of iMovie.
Give iPhoto a look at for creating the slideshow. It's easy to assemble the photos in an album in iPhoto, put them in the order you want and then make a slideshow of them. You can select from various themes and transitions between slides and add music from your iTunes library.
When you have the slidshow as you want use the Export button at the bottom of the iPhoto window and export with Size = Medium or Large.
Save the resulting Quicktime movie file in your Movies folder.
Next, open iDVD, choose your theme and drag the QT movie file into the menu window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Then follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it. If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
The reason I suggest iPhoto is that I find it much easier to use than iMovie (except for the older iMovie 6 HD version). Personal preferences showing here.
