Save/Open dialog crashes on opening a folder which contains multiple app. alias

Hi:
This is my first post in Apple forum, I've been searching some pages here, obviously I'm not the only one having this (or similar) problem but all existing threads are suggesting "Safe Mode" or "Disk Util" these useless things and never worked for me.
I believe this is a bug from os x / Finder, not sure if this has been filed or not against Apple bug db.
The problem:
Save/Open dialog hangs up when loading / opening an existing folder which contains multiple application alias
How to reproduce:
1) Use any browser (I use Firefox and Chrome) to open a page and  print the page / or download something, or print something as PDF
2) When Save dialog ( some people call it file picker or location selector, whatever) pops up, select a folder which contains multiple application alias
3) Dialog hangs up, and the application icon on those  alias will not be loaded successfully. Need to Force Quit the browser.
4) Issue cannot be reproduced always, but frequently enough if you have many application alias and files / subfolders in the target folder
5) By removing all the application alias, can workaround the issue.
6) The icons of application on those alias are loaded slowly in a successful loading (seems there are some performance issues)
7) This issue has not been observed before upgrading to Mavericks
Env:
27 inch iMac Late 2012, 2.9GHz i5, 8G DDR3, NVIDIA GTX660M 512M, OS X 10.9.1
Please anybody (not sure if Apple monitors this community) who knows details in regards to this, share some info. (or maybe there already is a fix ? ) .
Thanks.
Regards,
Lyle.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • How can I restore a whole folder which (containing multiple albums) has disappeared - has disappeared from my iPhoto Library (using Aperture 3.5.1)?

Last time I saw the folder, it  had somehow moved inside another large folder, so I remember trying to move it back to its correct place.  Now it has vanished completely - along with all the albums and as far as I can see the events and photos to boot. Searching for some of the album titles brings up none of them.  And they're not in the trash. However, if I open the Library in iPhoto, the search button does find some of the missing photos - where Apertues found none. Why should that be?  I'm trying to restore the iPhotoLibrary from an arbitrary date a month ago in my CrashPlan database - this will take over two days. I used Time Machine to restore the Library as it was one month ago, but no dice. Does anybody have any ideas??
    Many thanks in advance!

    OS X 10.9

I assume, you already checked, if the search filters in the Browser and Viewer are cleared?
Have you tried to repair or to rebuild the library?
To use the Aperture Library First Aid tools:
Press and hold the Option and Command keys as you start Aperture. The Aperture Library First Aid dialog will appear and offer the following three troubleshooting options:
Repair Permissions. Some issues in Aperture may be caused by incorrect permissions for items in the library. To correct the permissions for your library, select the option to Repair Permissions then click the Repair button. You must authenticate with a user name and password for a user account with administrative access to perform this operation.
Repair Database. Sometimes internal structures within the library may become damaged and cause unexpected behavior; you can use Repair Database to try to correct the issue. Select the option to Repair Database then click the Repair button.
Rebuild Database. For more severe issues that can't be corrected with Repair Permissions or Repair Database, you can try Rebuild Database. It is strongly recommended that you have a complete backup of your Aperture library before performing this operation, either in the form of a recently updated vault, or a Time Machine backup. Select the option to Rebuild Database then click the Rebuild button in the Aperture Library First Aid dialog.

  • How can I get the "Open" and "Save As" dialog boxes to open at larger than their default size?

How can I get the "Open" and "Save As" dialog boxes to open at larger than their default size?  I would like them to open at the size they were previously resized like they used to in previous operating systems.  They currently open at a very small size and the first colum is only a few letters wide necessitating a resize practically every time one wants to use it.  Any help would be appreciated.

  • Why does it take so long for the Open, Save, or Save As Dialog Boxes to Open?

I'm having a problem throught CS6 with the Open, Save, or Save As dialog boxes not opening for a period of time after clicking on the desired functions.  It can take over a minute just to get the Open dialog box up to browse for a file.  Eventually, the dialog boxes open, but during the time that it's trying to open, the program is unresponsive.  It is happening with all of my CS6 programs.  I have unistalled and reinstalled with no fix.  The programs are updated.  Anyone else having this trouble?  Any solutions?

Thanks for your response.  The system is a Windows 7 64-bit system with 4GB RAM installed.  I am not trying to save anywhere in particular.  By default, it would open to the user's documents, and does eventually, but it currently just sits for about a full minute before doing anything.  This machine was saving properly when CS6 was first installed about 5 months ago.
I've checked for unconnected network drives. I've also renamed the Illustrator preferences file based on a reccomendation that I found elsewhere.  However, neither of these helped.
I can provide screenshots or anything else that's needed.

  • Open dialog crashing in Photoshop Elements 11 (Mac OS X Mountain Lion)

I downloaded the trial for Photoshop Elements 11 for Mac. I'm using Mac OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4).
In the File > Open dialog, if I touch either of the two pop-up menus at the bottom of the dialog, Photoshop Elements crashes. This is 100% consistent and reproducible.
This means I'm having a bit of trouble getting started at all. Mac users (10.8.4), can you confirm / deny this issue? Thx.
Oh, by the way, exactly the same thing happens with the pop-up menu in the Save dialog. So if I want to set the image format to save in, I crash.

Fixed the crash! Unfortunately I'm a bit hazy on the details. The key move was telling TinkerTool to revert to all defaults. But as to exactly which setting was triggering the issue, I'm not sure. I've restored a lot of my TinkerTool settings and the crash has not returned. So clearly I have not yet hit on the crucial one.
The key observation here was that the crash was not occurring in a new clean user account. So evidently there was something about my primary user account that was essential to the crash. That started me on a long slow process of testing...

  • On a MBP with Mavericks how do I get the Save As dialog box to open at the same size and place at which it was last closed and used to happen before Mavericks?

Before I upgraded my MBP to Mavericks, the Save As dialog box would reopen at the same size and position as it was when last closed.  Now with Mavericks it always opens in the same position at a very small size.  Is there a way to make it reopen at the last place and size at which it was closed?

I have resolved the issues presented without having to find and uninstall the Macromedia Flash Player 8.0 in order to get "Adobe Flash Player 10" playback of .swf files on my computer. When I begin this task, I expected to download an "Adobe Flash Player 10" as a player program download instead of the Internet Explorer and Firefox plugin that it appears to be.
This is what I did and what I believe I have:
    1. I setup Internet Explorer 6 as my default browser and then used the following site to download Adobe Flash Player 10
    http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/
    2. As I had done before (and also suggested in another thread here), I went to Tools/Manage Add Ons and found Shockwave Flash Object, highlighted it, and clicked on Update Active X. Next, what I did not do before, I restarted the computer immediately after that.
    3. Next, I set Mozilla Firefox as my default browser and then used the above site to download Adobe Flash Player 10 again.
    4. With Firefox, the critical step included Firefox Tools/Options/Content with File Types (Configure how Firefox handles certain types of files) and the Manage Tab there. SWF Shockware Flash Object/Change Action/and dotting "use this plugin" - Shockwave Flash, followed by a computer restart got the job done.
Now, if I want playback of a .swf file, I can
    a. Open With Internet Explorer (assumed with the Adobe Flash 10 "plugin")
    b. Open With Mozilla Firefox (assumed with the Adobe Flash 10 "plugin")
    c. Open With Macromedia Flash Player 8.0
I am satisfied with those results for my use. Any additional comments on the player vs plugin aspect of the matter would be interesting and helpful.

  • Mountain Lion Save As Dialog Crash

    Hi,
I'm right now experiencing a very odd problem. I just freshly installed 10.8.5 on my girlfriends macbook pro 8,1 13". I then manually copied some contents of the ~/Library folder plus the contents of the old user's home folder and tweaked system settings.
Looks fine except if I use 'save as' in either Textedit or Preview. The dialog opens but then immediately crashes, showing the spinning wheel forever.
=> The whole dialog doesn't react anymore, except for the "Format: PNG" dropdown menu. In that area only, the spinning wheel becomes a mouse again.
Other 'Save As' dialogs (Word, Firefox, Terminal) seem to work fine. So far, this only happens reproducably with Preview and Textedit. I checked and repaired the file system and access rights. There was nothing wrong. Will try reseting PRAM, though I doubt this will lead somewhere.
Maybe something went wrong while restoring the backup??
Any help would be highly appreciated!!
    Cheers.

As I cannot edit anymore, here some more details:
This also happens when closing a new document and Preview/Textedit asks whether the document should be saved or not.
PRAM reset was no use. And logging in as guest user doesn't change anything.
    Help!

  • Save as dialog on exit in Temp Folder

    Hi,
We have made a little program that create a PDF in windows temp folder (C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp). We open it and the user can modify is content.
After we check if they change and send back to our application.
My problem is when the user want to save his change.
No problem if the user clic on File->save in Adobe. The file is save without problem in the temp folder and after the user clic to close adobe.
But if the user doesn't save and clic for close adobe, the dialog of Abode come and it ask if you would like to save your change. If the user click yes,
a dialog box save as come and want to save the document on the desktop.
If we put our file in another folder (not C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp) the dialog "save as" doesn't appear after we have press yes to the dialog "Would you like to save your change?".
So could you say me if we can disable this "Save as" dialog when we are on temporary folder ?
    Thanks for your Help

Those of us using Leopard routinely learned very quickly to click on the Save button and briefly hold on it. You will then get the Save As dialog you desire, and other options. It is only the quick click that defaults to use the designated Download folder.

  • Unable to open pdf from some particular shared folder which is not in domain

    Encountered a strange issue here.
We have copuple of users who login with Citrix session.
They are able to open pdf from all the shared folders but not one which is not in domain.
User are able to open all other files viz. doc, excel, notepad and so from that particular folder.
Issue with all the pdf files and not only one particular file.
Double clicking the pdf file starts the process AcroRd32.exe but the file does not open.
If an already running AcroRd32.exe process is there (means if Adobe Reader is already open), then it's possible to open the pdf files from that folder.
Moreover, came across one strange thing.
I created a shortcut to one of the pdf file from that folder within the same folder.
And it was possible to open pdf file from that shortcut but not directly :S
Gives error: "Acrobat failed to connect DDE server" after about 20 mins if we try to open file directly.
Googled a bit and found that issue can be resolved by navigating to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\acrobat\shell\open\ddeexec\application and changing the Key "AcroviewA10"  to  "AcroviewR10
But when I navigated to the mentioned registry there was no AcroviewA10 but instead it was just Acroview.
    Adobe Reader version: 9.5.5
I will be really grateful if somebody can provide solution for this.

What happens when you open the Adobe app, then tell it to open the file?
How big are the attachments?  There are limitations to the size allowed to be sent:
    Email Provider
    Size Limit
    Gmail
    25Mb
    Outlook
    20Mb
    Yahoo
    25Mb
Are you sending the files to yourself?  Not sure how you are emailing files from a website...
Are the PDF's password-protected, or some kind of copyrighted eBook perhaps?  Can you email other files successfully, or are PDF's the only files that don't work?
Perhaps using a free Cloud service as an intermediary might work better.

  • How to disable the open dialog when I open preview?

    Hi,
I click on an PDF in the Finder.
Preview launches, opens my PDF AND OPENS A OPEN-DIALOG (iCloud) ?
Why? iCloud is nice, but things like that are annoying and I wish sometimes I can go back to Snow Leopard.
Is there a secret workaround to fix this?
    Maybe a secret scew driver?
    Many greetings to all!
    rob

I've had the same issue bugging me since installing Snow, er, lion, er, cat, er, cougar, er, Mountain Lion. Incredibly ANNOYING.
It's stupid stuff like this and reverse scrolling that really turn long-timer users off. I'm personally glad Forstall got fired for blunders such as these.
I'm serious peeved that turning off iCloud Documents & Data actually deletes documents and data locally. That's just incredibly stupid.
MANY thanks mende1 for the answer on how to fix it.

  • Opening PDF crashes any open programs

Whenever I try to open a PDF (in mail, safari, preview, or Adobe) all my open programs crash. I booted in safe mode and I had no problem opening a PDF.
So, I tried disabling all my login items; I deleted all the pref files, of the above listed programs, from the library; did the usual disk utility, mac janitor, multiple restarts: Nothing. Same problem.
I looked at the crash report and I notice this line:
    "KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000000"
The x00000 number changes everytime depending on which program I am looking up.
I recently updated Microsoft word and added Extensis Suitcase X1 and I am up to date on all my Tiger updates. Any thoughts? It looks like there is an extension conflict with adobe. If so, how can I access the extensions and figure out the conflict?
    Thanks....

First thing to try is creating another admin user account, log into it, and see if the problem persists. If not, then the conflict is within the original user account—usually a corrupted preference file, checkable with Preferential Treatment. If not, then it's system-wide and your best bet is an Archive & Install, preserving user and network information. See http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120 for details.

  • Help!  Save File Dialog CRASHES Every Program

Suddenly, I cannot save a file in any program in Mac OS X. As soon as I select "Save..." or hit Ctrl+S, the program crashes. This happens in every program, all of them!
The problem persists across multiple reboots, and even after repairing permissions, verifying the disk, and booting into single-user mode and running fsck (and the disk passed).
Please email me directly at jonmills at email dot unc dot edu if you have any ideas how to fix this. It has rendered my computer unusable, and I may have to completely re-install.

to make things clearer a screenshot of the dialog I'm talking about. this happens everywhere such a generic save file dialog appears.

  • How to I make a "Package" folder that contains my app?

I am not a developer, but I'm hoping someone here will know how to do what I'm asking.
I am creating a VERY simple Filemaker runtime app. It consists of an .app file (which is a package), some extensions, a .usr file, and an aknowledgements PDF.
I'd like to place all of these files in a folder and then have that folder be the new package, so that when the user double-clicks it, it launches the app.
How to I make a folder launch an app when it is double-clicked?
    Thanks

I think I misunderstood, or I didn't ask the correct question.
I was not looking for a way to build an installer (although that was helpful!), I was actually looking for a way to make the enclosing folder for my app double-clickable to launch the app.
My app consists of a bunch of files that are all in a folder. That is messy - I'd like for just one icon for my app to live in the /Applications folder. Can I set up the app's enclosing folder so that when the user double-clicks it, it opens the app? (Is this done with folder actions?) This would essentially make the solitary apps folder indistinguishable from the actual app to the user, and it woulc look a lot cleaner than having a bunch of files.
Most apps can be right-clicked to "show package contents". Isn't that essentially just an enclosing folder with a folder script that contains the app and its files?
I hope I'm making sense here.

  • File Open dialog crashes most applications

I have been fighting with this problem for the past few days. For some reason, whenever I go to "Open File..." in most programs, the application will crash with the following stack crawl being common to all crashes:
    0 com.apple.CoreGraphics 0x903310ed CGImageGetWidth + 6
    1 com.apple.HIToolbox 0x92f6b9d5 HISegmentView::CalcSegmentContentWidth(unsigned long) + 249

    11 com.apple.NavigationServices 0x92e8af00 NavChooseObject + 258
It looks like it's trying to work with some image that causes a crash in an OS call.
This crash happens in iTunes, Firefox, Parallels, and probably most other programs. So far, the only programs that I commonly use which don't exhibit this problem are Safari and QuickTime Player.
This just started happening recently. The last thing installed was a System update on 6/10, which only included an update for QuickTime 7.1.1 on 6/10. I can't seem to find an older version of QuickTime on apple's site to back-rev.
I have tried a few other things, including repairing permissions and the disk, downloading and re-installing the 10.4.6 update and cleaning caches with Tiger Cache Cleaner.
I think I am at the point where I may have to re-install the OS, which I haven't had to do on a Mac before. I am hoping there is a way to maintain all of my settings and documents. In the windows world, this is called a repair install.
Would anyone have any words of advice?
    Thanks,
    - Brian

    Hi Brian,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It sounds like the best thing to try from where you're at is an Archive & Install.
Please repair the Disk & its permissions before doing this,
also backup any critical data you may have.
