Save playlists

I want to backup my iTunes library, and I have EVERYTHING scrutinizingly organized by albums in playlists (i've imported my entire physical music library) and the lone songs are in various playlists as well. You get the picture.
Could someone tell or direct me to what I have to do to save my playlists and how to restore them should I ever need to? Thanks a lot!

Hi,
I'm also looking for a good way to back-up my iTunes library, and here is what I've found so far:
1. You can just back up the music files. (They're usually in something like ~/Music/iTunes Music Library... you can find the exact location in iTunes|Preferences|Advanced, or you can simply drag them out of iTunes into a finder window.) Some song information is stored directly in the file. This includes track name, album, album art, lyrics, composer, note, and basically everything that is listed in the "Info" panel of a song's "Get Info" window. Some other information is not stored directly in the song file, including ratings, playcount, start and end time, and anything in the "Options" panel of a song's "Get Info" window. (Also, inclusion in playlists is not, of course, stored in the actual song file.)
So, in summary, backing up all of your music files only has the cons of losing the aforementioned information, but it has the pro that your backups -- except for the protected AAC files for music purchased from the iTunes music store -- will be readable by computers without iTunes. (Note: before backing up your music files directly, it is a good idea to "consolidate" your music library (from the Advanced|consolidate menu item).)
2. Another way to backup is to copy your entire library (i.e. all files) as well as the associated iTunes database files. (Or, you can have Apple's "Backup" program do this for you.) This has the disadvantage that restoring the backup is a pretty-much all-or-nothing activity: you can't just restore a few lost songs.
3. You can click on a playlist and burn a "Data Disk". This works wonderfully: you can just re-insert the disc (either DVD or CD) and it will show up just like a shared iTunes library. The downside is that you have to back up each playlist separately, and files included in multiple playlists get backed up multiple times... I really wish you could burn multiple playlists to the same disk in this manner, (the analogous operation works in iPhoto) but I don't know how.
Anyway, just a few thoughts.

When i have saved genius playlists or compile my own on my ipod touch they do not save when i then connect to my pc.

The only way i can save playlists is to edit them when i am connected to the pc.  HELP ?

If you get an error that says can't backup, try moving the existing backup file to a safe location and thry again. again. You can find the location of the backup file here:

  • Zen Touch Features I Want! Save Playlist as, Order Playist Tracks and Crossf

    My Wishlist!
Please give me the ability to change the order of songs in the playlist and to save (overwrite) or save as...
Please. I know you can overwrite by re-typing the same name... which is a pain if you can't remember every name and frankly, a waste of time.
Which brings me to... Let's be able to rearrange the track order from within a playlist! It is 2005 already.
And if I'm going to pass up the opp to show off my kids pictures from a 40 GB music only machine, please let me crossfade the tracks with a few time based options?

It's certainly easier?to create and edit playlists via the PC, using any of the software that can do this e.g. MediaSource, and even easier with the?excellent shareware Notmad Explorer.

  • Cannot save playlist

Noticed a bug in iOS 8.2.. Here's it:
You're playing a bunch of songs and before the current song ends your mind thinks "Hey I don't have this song in my playlist.. let me add it up"
Now when your current song is about to end (20s before or sometime), you go and want to edit your playlist... well you can defenitelyt add but CANNOT SAVE!
When you're editing a playlist you get an option DONE to save your changes. This option changes to "NOW PLAYING>" when your PREVIOUS SONG ends and NEXT SONG starts playing in the background and only way to select another song is to kill MUSIC APP and restart it.. (Please refer below screenshots)
Now my question is... Does anyone else faced this issue? How do I report it to Apple? I used https://www.apple.com/feedback/ipodtouch.html to submit Feedback but is that it? Is this really a bug or did I miss out anything?

Not sure how Apple intends users to get this done, but I found a way.  Once your genius list of song has played a bunch of the songs, you can look at your play lists and select the "smart" play list called "Recently Played".  Sort that list by "last played", then select them and drag them to a new play list that you've created.  They'll be in reverse order, but at least they'll be in a playlist you can now control.
Seems silly to me. There really ought to be an easy way to save a genius created play list that you are listening to.... It's pretty much not-genius that there's not an easy way to do this.  But until someone can explain how to do this with some built-in feature, this method will work for me for now.

Does anyone know what the problem might be? I have tried it with both of my (brand new) players and on 2 different computers. I am running Win XP Pro.

Anyone? I've had these 2 players now for a while, and found them too light to use for paper weights. Does anyone know what else they may be good for?

  • Computer crash - save playlists

    Hello,
Last night my Windows XP Home crashed. I could not open it anymore and therefore installed next to the old on Windows Slim version, so I could still save all my files from Windows before reinstalling everything completely.
I would also like to save my playlists in iTunes (dont have them all on my iPod), but when I try to open iTunes on my old Windows disk (c:) I get the error: " Apple Application Support is required to Run iTunes, please uninstall iTunes and install iTunes again" Is there a way to open iTunes still? Or which file has all the playlists so that I can copy that and open it later on on my new installed computer? I tried to install iTunes again on my old drive (c), but the computer automatically wants to install iTunes again on the drive where my new windows is....
    Please help!!

  • Can I lock/save playlists (make them harder to be deleted!)

Hi i was wondering if it is possible to lock/save my playlists so that they can't be deleted very easily.
I keep deleting carefully put together playlists by mistake.(stupid I know!!)
No warning is ever given and they disappear leaving me to put them all back together again.

Playlist can't be locked, however, you can export them individually as a text file (file menu>export - the file will be named same as the playlist.txt. If you lose one, simply reimport it using the import command (file menu>import). I suggest creating a separate folder in your iTunes folder titled "Playlist" and keep the .txt files there for future need.

  • HELP! Library File won't save, Playlists lost, and Itunes behaviour erratic

Can someone please help me? Itunes is doing my nut in. My Itunes was working fine until last week, when for some unknown reason, I connected my ipod to my PC and it killed all my USB ports. After stopping and restarting the Itunes service, that seemed to resolve itself.
However, today, I have had real problems with Itunes. First, it didn't want to open at all. Then, when it did open, I kept getting the dreaded 'Library file cannot be saved' message. I followed the instructions in the help articles, but as soon as I get to the stage where you move the library file to your desktop, it stopped Itunes working - it wouldn't load and gives me a message about some files missing.
So I uninstalled Itunes and re-installed it. Well, the first time it said there was something wrong with the installation package and it wouldn't work. The second time it got stuck on the registration process. The third time it worked but couldn't connect to the ITunes Store. Next time, it worked, and all my music is there, but the playlists have vanished and it keeps telling me the library file can't be saved.
Please help!!!!! (and no sarcastic comments about buying a Mac please...there's a recession on you know!)

This issue persists whether the drive is accessed via AFP network or FireWire.

  • How to save playlist on my external drive

I have a very large iTunes music library on an external drive.  When I create a new playlist I want that playlist to be on the same external drive so that it can be recognized by Sonos.
Right now it appears that playlists are stored on my internal hard drive.  (Newly imported CDs are properly saved on the external drive, but not so for the playlists I'm creating)
    Suggestions?
    Thx!

    Hello ryane84
The easiest and most efficient way to copy your music is to follow the steps under the External drive section. Make sure that you have organized the iTunes library first before you copy it over. Then put the copied iTunes folder in the same Music folder on your computer.

  • Computer crashed/save playlist off of iPod to new Itunes

My original computer crashed and I reloaded it, but it sees it as a new computer. Is there a way to put my old playlist from my ipod to the new itunes so I dont have to manually rebuild them? Thanks

If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

  • Is there any way to save playlist

Okay so we are getting a new computer and I want to know if there is a way to save our play list   so that I don't have to reenter each song back in to them? If any one can help I would appreciate it  a lot.

Backup your entire library with this User Tip. Restore the backup onto the new computer. Deauthorise the old computer if you don't need to access protected content on it any longer.

  • I want to save playlists from my iPhone to iTunes in new computer. How?

Like an idiot, I didn't have my entire music library backed up. Hard drive crashed. I'd like to move all my music playlists from the iPhone to the iTunes on my new computer. Anyone know how? I was able to move the "purchased" from the phone to the computer, but not all of my play lists... Help!

You can try (at your own risk) a third party program.
There is no way to do tis without an unsupported third party program.

  • Need To Re-Install Windows & iTunes.  Can I Save Playlists, Ratings, Etc?

Okay, here's the issue I'm about to face.
I am going to wipe my pc clean (reformat hard drive, reinstall Windows XP Pro, etc) and start over. Then I'll be downloading and installing iTunes once again.
I have over 11,000 songs, all rated (stars) and organized into playlists. I have over 200 playlists (by albums, by genres, etc) and all the info attached to each song.
Sounds simple, but HOW do I download and install iTunes so I can have it RETAIN all this information? The last time I upgraded iTunes (just a simple UPGRADE) it lost all this info and I had to listen to each song and re-rate them one by one.
Can anyone tell me how to go about doing this? I don't want to lose this info, it'd drive me crazy. Email [email protected] with any help. Thank you SO so much!!

Deauthorize iTunes on your PC before you reformat.
    http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to -a-new-hard-drive
That article explains what you need to do. The important file that holds ratings, play counts, etc is named
    iTunesLibrary.itl
Another thing you need to know is the paths to the music files have to be the exact same thing after you reformat. So if all your music is on an external hard drive named F:, that exHD still has to be named F: after you reformat.
If it's named E: or G: iTunes won't be able to find anything.
