Save streaming vid as QT movie?

Is there a way to convert a streaming vid to a QT movie? In particular, I'd like to convert an AP News video.
Here's the LINK to the AP News video site.
iBook G4 1ghz/ G4 tower 500mhz Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Thanks, that's a great add-on for Firefox! But, unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work w/ AP News vids.
AP News (as well as a lot of other news sites, now) have it set up so that when you click on a video, it opens up in their 'media player'.
I think what it's doing is that when you click on the link to the clip you want to see, the clip just opens up in a specific part of the page you're already viewing (as opposed to opening up a new page.) I think this prevents Download Helper (as well as the conversion sites) from knowing which particular part of the page to download.
Of course, I could be totally wrong, this is just a guess. But, if anyone can figure out how to do this, I'd appreciate it:)

    I want to save streaming video to watch later, wma format, whatever
    format is most common on the internet. Quick Time does not
    open automatically when the streaming video starts but Windows Media
    Player opens. What program is low cost that will save the video
    stream that Quick Time Player or Windows Media Player can open?As I see it, you basically have 3 main options:
    1) Screen Capture -- Any streaming video that can be watched/listened to can be captured. Several applications are available that can do this but I generally prefer SnapzProX. This class of program essentially allows you to "record" the audio and video as it is being played back on your computer. This is normally done using a very simple but very fast codecs which create rather large files on your computer but which can then be transcoded to a more efficient format for playback whenever you wish.
    ADVANTAGES: You end up with a fully self-contained copy of the media which can be locally archived, moved, copied, and is available as long as you keep the copy.
    DISADVANTAGES: This approach can require large amounts of storage space depending on the commpression format used and the number of files stored. Depending on the material involved, this could constitute a copyright violation of media use.
    2) Save As... -- If you have/purchase QT Pro and/or an appropriate third-party QT component (like Flip4Mac in this case), you open open/play the streaming file in the QT Pro Player and save a copy of the movie that contains a resource pointer to the online streaming server. For all intents, you have a "copy" of the file stored on your computer that can, within certain limits, be played back whenever you wish.
    ADVANTAGES: Since the saved movies are very small, you can save a large number of them on your computer. Since they open and play just like standalone movies, they are very easy to use and share. Since control of the content remains with the orginator and access (public or limited) remains as intended by the originator, you would not be violating copyrights here.
    DISADVANTAGES: Material may be changed, removed, or unavailable for one reason or another at any given time. Playback requires connection to the Internet.
    3) Bookmark/URL List -- As a last resort, you can always bookmark or copy the relavent streaming server URL to a "hyperlink" list and open the media manually whenever you wish/are able to do so.
    ADVANTAGES: Nothing to buy.
    DISADVANTAGES: Requires extra effort on your part, still won't open in the QT Player, and still remains subject to the online vagaries mentioned above.

  • VLC doesn't save streaming audio to mp3 anymore

    I want to save streaming audio from the internet to my HDD in mp3 format while listening to it at the same time.  That worked fine when I did it with VLC, using the GUI.  To be specific, here are the settings that I used:
    VLC main menu: File>Open Network Stream>Open...Network>tick HTTP/HTTPS/FTP/MMS and enter the URL (http://vruk.sc.llnwd.net:12265) >under Advanced Options tick Stream/Save and click on Settings (opens Stream Output window)>Outputs, tick Play locally, tick File, click on Browse and enter filename and location for the stream saving file, i.e. /home/robert/vlcout.mp3>Encapsulation method, tick on Raw>Transcoding options, tick on Audio codec and select mp3>Bitrate 128 kb/s, Channels 2>OK, OK, to start recording. Stop or Quit VLC, to stop recording.
    Two days ago I upgraded VLC from v.0.8.5-9 to v.0.8.6a-4 (which also upgraded ffmpeg from v.20060920-1 to v.20070131-1), and now the above procedure isn't working anymore.  The stream isn't playing anymore over my speakers while the encoding supposedly is going on, the vlcout.mp3 file is empty (0B), and VCL gives me the following error messages:
    stream_out_transcode error: cannot find encoder ((null))
    stream_out_transcode error: cannot create audio chain
    main error: cannot create packetizer output (mpga)
    It looks as though VLC is failing to encode the stream to mp3.  The VLC documentation (see http://www.videolan.org/streaming-features.html) in a table of "possible output formats for the transcoding module" says that for mp3 audio "you have to compile ffmpeg with libmp3lame support."  Has the new ffmpeg v.20070131-1 (in extra) been compiled without mp3 support?  If so, why?  Apparently, the older version I was using last week supported mp3.
    libmp3lame is installed on my system.  There is a very recent alternative ffmpeg-svn-8218-1 pkgbuild in AUR that enables libmp3lame in the configure section of the build but when I try to install the package built that way it conflicts with ffmpeg v.20070131-1, and to remove the official ffmpeg v.20070131-1 I'd first have to remove a slew of other packages that depend on it.
    Is it possible to remove VLC v.0.8.6a-4 and ffmpeg v.20070131-1 and go back to the older versions that worked for me?  There was talk of a bug in ffmpeg in this forum at the end of January; what about it?
    What should I do?

    I solved the problem for now by downgrading both vlc and ffmpeg to the earlier versions that I was using before.  Saving an audio stream in mp3 format is working again now.
    I believe there are problems with the current versions of both vlc and ffmpeg.
    1. vlc 0.8.6a doesn't seem to have ffmpeg enabled, i.e.
    $ vlc --list | grep ffmpeg
    VLC media player 0.8.6a Janus
    whereas with the older version I get
    $ vlc --list | grep ffmpeg
    VLC media player 0.8.5 Janus
      ffmpeg                FFmpeg audio/video decoder/encoder ((MS)MPEG4,SVQ1,H263,WMV,WMA)
      ffmpeg                FFmpeg chroma conversion
      ffmpeg                FFmpeg audio/video encoder
      ffmpeg                FFmpeg demuxer
      ffmpeg                FFmpeg video filter
      ffmpeg                FFmpeg crop padd filter
      ffmpeg                FFmpeg deinterlace video filter
    2. The current package ffmpeg v.20070131-1 in extra may not refer to various libraries correctly in its configure parameters.  E.g. in AUR there is an alternative pkgbuild ffmpeg-svn 8218-1 from 04-Mar-2007 in which the original configure parameters were replaced as follows:
    --enable-mp3lame --> --enable-libmp3lame
    --enable-vorbis --> --enable-libvorbis
    --enable-faac --> --enable-libfaac
    --enable-faad --> --enable-libfaad
    --enable-a52 --> --enable-liba52
    --enable-dts --> --enable-libdts
    Has the ffmpeg package in extra been compiled with mp3 support which is needed for the transcoding module of vlc to encode in mp3 format?  The alternative ffmpeg package in AUR conflicts with the ffmpeg package from extra, and I don't know how to tell the new vlc to use the alternative package instead of the one from extra.
    Someone ought to look into this.

    and you can.
    You just can't send them over composite video from those devices for the same reason you cannot view broadcast television on your iPhone.
    It is not capable of doing it.
    I have found other forums that say you can.

    On the iPad you can stream videos, photos, or music from the Video, Photos, Music, and YouTube apps to an Apple TV OR just stream music to an AirPort Express Base Station.

    If that file is an FLV file then Firefox should save it as such and not change the file extension.

  • Need to save streaming video - what to do?

    My apologies if this is the wrong forum, but I didn't know where to go...
    There is a 30-second streaming video clip on the web that I would like to save/download for a legal promotional personal use.
    Is there any macintosh software I can use to "grab" this file? I've read the source page as best I can, but it always leads to a non-linkable windows media file
    Fast help would be appreciated. The file will only be only for a week.

    Hi, J.
    Snapz Pro X 2 with Movies will allow you to capture the video off the screen as it is played back. Not cheap: US$69 but it works superbly and is well-documented.
    You can investigate other solutions by searching MacUpdate or Version Tracker. The user-submitted reviews accompanying the listings can be helpful in sorting the wheat from the chaff.
    Good luck!

  • Can Apple TV 2 stream purchased videos / home movies converted to MP4 and in my iTunes library?

    Okay, so we currently own a 1st Gen ATV and love it, however 99% of it's use is streaming purchased content and/or home movies etc. that I've used visualhub/handbrake to convert and imported into my iTunes library. All in all, once I gave up and surrendered my video content to iTunes and started streaming to my 1st Gen ATV I've grown hooked, I love sorting stuff however I want (I have about 250 movies, entire seasons of X-Files etc. that I've ripped from my own (LEGAL) media and put in iTunes, so when it's sorted properly it's very clean, when it's all alpha, it's a nightmare.
    I've tried a few media servers for the PS3, however they just pile all the movies into one big alpha sorted mess, music isn't sorted by genre, no genius, TV shows are not tagged by watched, won't resume properly etc. Boxee / XBMC are a little better, but then again I run those on my ATV as well, and still Boxee doesn't really seem to sort stuff quite as well or play playlists properly.
    We're getting another TV for our den and have been looking into other media streaming options, what I love about the Apple TV is the way I can sort all our movies, shows etc. by genre, so the kids can just go to the stuff I've tagged as Kids Movies or I can make video playlists for them and mix up some Planet Earth and Dora the Explorer for our babysitter and movies /shows are tagged as watched/unwatched, if you stop one it will ask if you want to resume, etc.
    Looking into the ATV2 it seems like it's just geared for rentals, If that's the case I really am not interested. I like the Netflix option, but then again most newer internet connected TVs do that as well as my PS3, not sure how viable an option the WD TV Live plus or Boxee box is, I'd like to get some newer hardware, but I'm just not sure what route to go.
    Does the ATV2 stream media in iTunes TV Shows/Podcasts/Movies folders? It doesn't sync right? So it it all Airplay now?
    Is my best bet just to get another 1st Gen? Are there any other media servers that are able to sort stuff by played/genre/etc.
    Ug, I'm at a loss! I really love the features of my old Apple TV, and would love to get a new one, but I'm just not sure if it will do everything I'm used to, or if any of the other standalone boxes are better options?
    I know this is a bit of a ramble, hopefully someone can make enough sense out of where I'm going and help me out! Thanks!

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    The Apple TV 2 will play all the content in your iTunes library that your Apple TV 1 does. It can no longer sync any of it but can stream it all just as the older model did. Airplay is a different feature that lets you stream from an iPad/iPhone, the Apple TV 2 has Airplay the first didn't.
    You can still sort and search content by genre, it still marks content watched and unwatched and mainly still lets you organise much as the Apple TV 1 did, with one exception. It doesn't do nested folders, so the ability to tag a movie as a show (ie James Bond) and have all the associated movies in a James bond folder has gone and it lists all these movies individually.
    It has a similar situation with TV shows. It will put all TV shows in a series in a folder as the older one did, but the new one lists each series separately whereas the older model would put all the series in one folder.
    Not nesting folders is a bit of a pain with large libraries and whilst I don't like it, it's more or less the only compromise I have to make and of course I get additional features too.

  • My computer is full and I need to save all my shows and movies on an external hard drive.   I am on a mac book pro and I can't figure out how to drag the show in to the external hard drive

    My computer is full and I need to remove movies and tv shows out of itunes and save them in an external hard drive.   I cant figure out how to save them so I will be able to access them again.  Or store them in the cloud

    Do not store them in the Cloud.  It isn't really storage.  For iTunes purchases, for example, it is just re-downloading a purchase.  If a label decides to no longer make the item available it will disap[pear from the cloud and that will be it for you.
    You can't store items on an external drive simply by dragging them there.  That's too complicated for iTunes and how it is set up to work.  I know I post on this 10x a week and there's many other posts discussing this.  I suggest you browse a bit first.  Your options are basically to either put your whole library on the eternal drive (which is a nuisance if you don't want to drag it everywhere with you), or to copy individual items to the external drive, delete them from the internal drive, then re-add them as new items (re-adding to playlists, etc.).

  • No audio video streams upon import of .mov files?

    Hi... recently upgraded OS onto Intel 240 GB SSD. Running Widows 7 64 bit, clean re-install, 24 GB RAM, NIVIDIA Quadro FX 4800. I have been trying to optimize the system for maximum GPU accelerated effects while also taking advantage of the high speed read and write of my disk. OS runs on SSD, Adobe media cache on separate 2 TB eSATA connection, Media stored on external drive USB 3.0. Without getting into the fine details this is a snapshot of my workflow.
    The few problems I am encountering are some .mov files cannot be imported to PP. Error reads no audio or video stream in the files. I suspected metadata issues so tried to import with media browser and still no luck. These files worked perfectly before I began surgery 2 days ago on my computer. I have installed the latest version of quicktime and yet to no avail. Any recommendations here regarding my issue with imports or suggestions to benefit from my hardware would be appreciated.

  • Why do I have to stream or redownload my movies to watch them?

    Gotta admit, I don't really know much about iCloud as I rarely use iTunes on my PC so maybe I'm missing something here but I downloaded iCloud (it came with an iTunes update) several months ago and never thought much about it, as I said, I don't use iTunes a lot so I wasn't bothered about looking at the new features. Came to try and watch a movie today and I find that I can't. A bit of googling leads me to believe this is because, due to iCloud, iTunes is trying to stream my movies and songs rather than just play them from my computer? But every time I try to play any movies, I just get a black screen. I've sat here for at least 30 minutes waiting for a movie to load and it just doesn't. Most likely, this is because I have a poor internet connection.
    I discovered that I have to redownload a movie in order to watch it. That's not a simple solution however as I have 26 movies that I own on iTunes. My internet provider has a cap on how much I can download and if I go over this, they charge me. Not only that, but it takes days, literally, to download a movie because of my slow internet. It took me 19 hours over 2 days to download Goodfellas. Doing this for 26 movies, taking my broadband cap into consideration, would take me months to be able to access movies I already own. That's insane, frankly, and I don't understand why Apple thought that was a good idea to make my movies inaccessable without an internet connection. Not everyone has access to super fast unlimited broadband.
    Am I completely missing something here or what because this seems stupid as **** and I can't believe this is how it's actually supposed to work. I've tried uninstalling iCloud but it hasn't made any difference; when I open iTunes, I still have the cloud symbol and I still can't watch movies without downloading and my songs stream. I'm not happy about this, I don't want to have to be tethered to an internet connection to watch or listen to things I already own. Am I really unable to access my movies without spending weeks redownloading them? Streaming simply doesn't work.
    Can anyone offer me a solution here or are streaming or redownloading my only two options? My movies aren't even stored on iCloud according to iCloud manager because I never bothered with it, but there's a little cloud symbol next to all my movies and I can't watch them without clicking on it and waiting until it's downloaded. I can listen to songs through streaming but I don't want to have to do that, either. I want to be able to listen to songs and watch movies I own if, for whatever reason, I lose my internet connection.
    If this is how iCloud works then it simpy isn't something I can use and I want to get rid of it and be able to watch movies whenever I want without needing to stream or download but I've already uninstalled it and it's done nothing.
    Any advice?

  • I have a MacBook, iPhone, Airport Extreme and external hdd. What is my best option to stream my music and movies to my hifi set and TV without having to turn on my MacBook?

    I would very much like to store all my movies and music on my external HDD, which is connected to an Airport Extreme. Could for example Apple TV access this HDD and stream either music to my hifi system or video to my tv, without having to turn on my MacBook or iTunes? And use my iPhone to control everything?

  • Where is "Save As"?  (Want to move a project)

    iMovie project files are HUGE. I accept that. I wanted to move my project from one disk to another. Somehow, last week, I imported my raw video to my Firewire drive, but the project files stayed in my Movies directory on my system drive.
    How do I move my project to another drive?
    I corrupted my project trying to hack it (moving the files and editing the location by hand).. my bad. I just didn't see an option to open a project, then save it whereever I want. Didn't the old iMovie have this option?
    Love iMovie 08!

    Exactly (..why they don't bundle projects, events, etc in one package that you're free to move around..).
    I have my projects on a disk known as "/Volumes/LaCie Disk". I cannot move it -- I tried. There is no option in the File menu or Preferences. When you import a movie you can specify where the Event files go -- that's it -- FOREVER.
    You can actually drag the event directories around, just not the .rcproject files (the files that have my painstaken editing data).
    Looking in the .rcproject directory there are several files - some binary - some ascii with compressed data in XML format. In both cases you see "/Volumes/LaCie Disk" hard-coded into the file. I tried editing the "/Volumes/LaCie Disk" entry, but, alas it didn't work. If I want to edit my .rcproject a year from now I will have to do it at a location called "/Volumes/LaCie Disk".
    Apple, please, please add a Save As option to iMovie 08 -- soon!
