Save time on migration!

I wanted to just write few notes on the migration process i just did hoping this could be usefull to someone else.
I just received a MacbookPro Retina and i'm going to use this as a replacement of my old Macbook pro (end 2008 non-unibody).
Since the new MBP retina does not have a ethernet or a firewire port (and i didn't buy the adapter) i decided to do the migration through a TimeMachine backup (wifi linkbetween the 2 machines was also a option)
The first problem i met was that the migration assistant was extremely slow in recognizing the data inside the TimeMachine drive.
I did wait around one hour and it still did not started to copy stuff.
I call the support and they suggested to avoid to migrate the applications, since some complex software (like adobes), might not like it.
So i quit the migration process and i realized that spotlight was actually indexing the drive!
In fact i have multiple partitions on that drive and spotlight was indexing them even if i dismounted them before starting the migration.
I believe that when the migration assistant shuts down everything to start the migration, it actually does something to the disk to so all partitions becomes available. This could be ok, but it becomes a problem if the indexing process do not get shut down by the migration assistant and it tries to index the drive where you are migrating your stuff from.
The solution was to simply go in system preferences, spotlight, and add all the partitions of the drive to the list of stuff that do not get indexed.
The second problem was that i re-created the same account in the new computer.
Since i was logged in during the migration, i was unable to copy my previous account, i was forced to rename it.
So i went to system preferences, accounts, created a new temporary administrator account, logged into it and finally perform the migration from this account.
As a sidenote, migrating around 80gb from a portable usb2 disk, took around one hour.
Hope this could be useful to the community as it took me more than 2 hours to troubleshoot the issues (the first one mainly!)

On ESS, when users fill in their timesheets, they want that incase next weeks data is going to be the same then there should a facility to save draft so that they dont have to manually feed their time every week.
Currently i have found that we can save time sheet under "save as template" but I have no idea how to call the saved timesheet.
Could you help

  • How do I deal with project bloat? Long Save time is getting worse?

Here are the FB posts I have got about this issue. I tried to paste them neatly but didn't work.
To be honest I am baffled that such an advanced NLE has so many issues. There should be a warning about the Warp Stabilizer messing up a project I had no idea till now.
This was my question to a PP user group on FB.
I am cutting a 60+ minute doc with lots of source material and the project takes a dogs age to save now which is beginning to interrupt my workflow. I would have thought the save would take less time depending on how much work was done since the last save. I suppose working with Proxies might be the solution but I am already 70% done.
    Here are the responses
Saving the project file on an SSD might be a good idea.
Your project size is slowing you down. Create a couple of projects, each containing a part of the footage. Organized in bins as needed. Call them footage projects. Create an other project named edit and cut in there. Use the media browser to browse the footage projects. Import what you need and use search bins to keep it organized.
If you didn't transcode your footage before you started the project it could be part of the problem. And like the other post says only having the footage you are currently working on will also help. The claim that you don't have to transcode when working in Premiere is misleading because in most cases when working with many different source codecs transcoding will always improve your computers performance.
I had the exact same experience cutting a 90 min feature with 120 hours of Pro Res 4444 footage. Long save times are caused by project bloat, either by having too many assets loaded or a lot of warp stabilizer effects applied. Transcoding will only affect playback performance and exports - it doesn't sound like it's the problem in this case.
only some codecs (4K GoPro, 6K R3D, lengthy h264/AVCHD clips for example) benefit from transcoding and will be snappier and playback smoother. But transcoding will never ever help the loading or saving time of your project
Don't apply warp stabilizsr to everything. All those coordinates get stored in project file
All I can say is that I worked on a Premiere project in November where my computer spent up to 5-7 minutes scanning through all the different directories with footage after the project was open before I could play back the sequences in my project. I ha...
some of the ftg is in need of stabilization so I did use the warp stabilizer but not excessively. 15 x 3-10 second clips. Is there a way of managing the storage of the coordinates too minimize the hit on the project size?
nope. Try importing existing project into a new project.
I usually stabilize footage in a separate project to avoid huge project files, and export the stabilized result. Then I use the stabilized version in the main project.
I also work with Nested Sequences a lot. Working in short, manageable timelines. When opening a large project, Premiere will find the footage for the active sequence first, so I can start working quickly, while Premiere is still finding the rest of the footage.
Could do your warp stabilizing in AE and export renders of them, then import those renders into your project so the are just media files instead of files with stabilizer tracking points.

I usually stabilize footage in a separate project to avoid huge project files, and export the stabilized result. Then I use the stabilized version in the main project.
That would be something like  the advice I would have given
    and  more likely...
Save heavy duty  FX application until after you have locked down your edit. (eg Blurs , Warp, 3rd party FX(MB)
I Create separate sequences or Duplicate Projects for many reasons.  eg CC/Grade  and
Warp Stabiliser ...definitely.  Its even has a slow save  impact on After Effects Projects!

  • Is there any way of exporting a clip (example 1 hour) into 4 seperate 15 min clips at the same time? Or does anyone have any ideas along the same lines to save time? Add my skype baconhousevidz if you can help or are unsure of what im asking

  • Error "The Connection Failed" in Time Machine, Migration Assistant and Restore From DVD

I am receiving this error when trying to connect to my Time Machine Backup in my Time capsule. I input the proper password to access my Time Capsule and It returns me to the screen with the caption "The connection failed" under the Time Capsule name in the "Select your Disk" screen. What would cause this error. I am connecting via WIFI (AirPort) and have full signal. I am using Mac OSX 10.6.8
I recently had my 1TB hard drive replaced and I am attempting to restore using Time Machine, migration assistant or from the startup dvd (tried multiple ways, no success). The initial setup of mac OSX 10.6 would not let me connect or other attempts after erasing hard drive and reinstalling OSX from disk.
Worked on it all weekend and don't have enough beer to drown the frustration, any help is appreciated.

You are correct TM is not at all easy to do a full restore.
To answer your question: Yes TM disk does show up in finder.
After my initial startup setup I was able to start TM and access all my previous backups. I migrated some files and was able grab the data from finder. Not satisfied with that I tried to do a restore to that previous date, to no success. I then erased the HD and reinstalled OSx and tried again from the setup screen. That didn't work, sulked over some beers. I then tired with Migration assistant...same result (more beer).
In starting TM after trying MA, only one backup was showing in the Star screen (today). None of my previous backups were showing. Since exiting TM it has been "Making Backup Disk Available" ( xGB of 6.29GB). Considering the size, I can only assume that these are my previous backups.
I have reviewed Pondini's posts, FAQs, and tutorials. I am a little scared to try and locate the drives through Terminal as in Pondini's TS #6 guide. If I can get my previous backups to show up, I will be happy with dragging files from Finder to restore my data and slowly work at restoring my settings/applications.

  • Huge file size and long save time in Premiere Elements 10

I have just got Premiere Elements 10.
I have a 80MB webinar recording in wmv format which I'm using PE10 to remove sections and resave. No fancy filters or effects. Just cutting out unwanted bits. My issue is that no matter what save formats I look to set, my 60 minute cut down video is estimated at almost 6GB. It has also been rendering and saving for the past 3 hours and only at 41%. How in the world can the shorter video be 75 times larger than the original!!!!
I've used a lot of Adobe products in the past so I can't believe this software would actually be designed to be this way. I had previously used other software such as Windows Movie Maker and the file and save times were much smaller/shorter.
My laptop has 4GB of RAM and an Intel Core Duo 2.66GHz processor so that can't be it. Also my Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator etc all run fine.
Any advise please? I must be missing something. PE10 couldn't be this useless.

On the settings I was trying to pick ones that looked small
    That'll be your problem.
It sounds as though you have tried to select project settings that match your anticipated output. That is completely wrong for PRE (although it is the case in some competitor products. In PRE you must pick a project setting that exactly matches your clips. You can identify the clips with something like GSpot or MediaInfo.
You will also know if you picked the right setting when you add a clip to the TimeLine. If a red line appears across the top of the TimeLine you have picked the wrong setting.
Analyze your clip with GSpot and post a screenshot here. Then we can tell you what setting to use.

  • Flash Cs6 incredibly sluggish save time, & unable to save document as

I am using Flash CS6, animating on ones with the brush tool.  my timeline is 100 frames long, there arent keyframes on every frame, but there are a lot of them.  my .fla file is 79mb.
there is only one thing in my library - a 15 second .wav audio file...
Saving the .fla file takes about 2 1/2 minutes!
after the 2 1/2 minutes I get flashed the "cannot save document as...   please try saving with a different name or on a different volume".
contrary to the error message the file does in fact save perfectly fine - in that volume with that name.
what is the deal with the save time being so outrageously long? the program is equally sluggish with copying and pasting keyframes - though thats less of an issue than the save time.
please help me, i can send you the flash file if your willing to look at it.
ps: I tried opening the file in cs5.5 - the save time was slightly faster, but not by much.

    Sujai, here’s what I found:
    1.       The student’s project is 58 mbytes in size. This is mostly because she used the flame deco tool to create a frame-by-frame animation of a rocket.
    2.       At school students have networked folders. The network is 1 gbit, and the server is in the same building.
    3.       It took 3 minutes and 40 seconds to save her project. At the end of the Save operation, we got the error message that it didn’t save properly (And, if we have auto-save on, this happens every 10 minutes). . However, the file was properly saved, and could be opened.
So, it appears that Flash has problems saving files of this size, at least in our network. This surprises me, because 50 mbytes is not that big.
I was able to get around this problem by having the student change her flame animation to a movie clip, and Tween the flames. It doesn’t have quite as cool a look as the frame-by-frame, but it’s more efficient (and only 6mbytes in size).
    Thoughts? JR

  • Want to save time while doing inserts or updates using JDBC

I want to save time while doing inserts/updates in a database in my Java app. using JDBC. My app. has to do a lot of inserts and that takes up a lot of time.
I can do some buffering and then do bulk/batch inserts if that will help. any pointers on whether this will be useful and how to go about it?
Is there any other way I can save time and thereby improve performance?
I am using Oracle 8 with Oracle thin driver.
    Thanks

I tried using the PreparedStatement.addBatch() and PreparedStatement.executeBatch() in a test program.
The error is SQLException - "Unsupported feature" which I get at the addBatch method call. I am using oracle thin driver sdk 8.1.6 for jdk 1.2.x

This one deserves a place in the structures palette.
For some reason I always open the array palette to select a "for loop"
and selecting the N of the for to change the visibility of the label.
    A pity both don't work.
But I also agree with Stephen that changing palettes should be done only when really needed.
Every change proposal should have a lot of arguments. The more users LabvIEW has the more people need to agree on a change !!!!!
Additions on the other hand and alternatives are welcome.

  • How can I manage audio output power save time?

I need to make spdif-audio out always ON, that's needed for my external DAC which is synced on the signal correctly. However, the system mute audio out in about one minute of silence. How can I avoid this power save and keep sync signal always ON, or, at least, increase power save time up to 10-15 minutes?
    Thanks!

  • Feature request: auto-save timer reset

The auto save timer currently runs continuously: every n minutes, it auto-saves if the project has changed. It should auto-save n minutes after the last save whether auto or not. That is, any save action should reset the countdown timer. Also, auto-save shouldn't start while a manual save action is in progress.

    There is a better way.

    Hi penguin,
You might try PDF OCR X, a drag and drop application for OS X. The 'community' version is free, but is limited to single page PDF documents. The 'enterprise' version removes that limitation, but costs $30 (US).

Excessive render time and save time ...... i mean this can take 2 hours!!! what can be done to fix this? is this normal? what may be the problem? its killing me!! mac g5 duel 1.8 512 meg

    More info.
    Is it a long sequence?
Is it effects and layer intensive?
How large is your project file after saving?
    What are you rendering to/
What are you editing... DV... HD etc.
Render time can vary greatly depending on these and other issues.
As for long saves, is only one project open when you are saving?
When projects get really large they start to take longer and longer to save and become harder to work with.
