Save To iPhoto Library

Whenever I try to save an image from a website to the iPhoto library everything looks normal but the picture does not appear in my iPhoto library. How come?? If I save it to the desktop, then drag it to iPhoto that works great.
Also, photo's are not my big passion, I have about 100. Is there a way to slim things down a bit?? All I want is the basic library, I do not need or want folders by year and then all the subfolders within those. Believe it or not it makes it impossible for me to find stuff. One folder is all I need. Please help, been having a heck of a time with this, thanks.

Jambandbrian:
The only way to get photos into your iPhoto library is to import them from anywhere outside of the iPhoto Library folder. Move the ones you've added to the library folder via the Finder to the desktop and drag them into iPhoto's open window from there. Here's an Apple KB document you should be familiar with, especially the warnings contained therein: Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto Library folder from the Finder. For future scanning, same the new files to the desktop or a folder setup to receive them and then import from there.

My external Lacie Hard drive that contains the IPhoto library is a "locked volume."  Wow, now it is suddenly letting me copy it. I dragged the library's icon to the new destination (a 3T hard drive) and it is working so far.
I have also had problems copying my IMovie events from this drive, whose data I'm trying to save.  It reaches a certain video and stops.  I will delete that video and try again.

  • Is it possible to set screen saver to iphoto library on another computer?

I have all my photos on an iMac; I have a mac mini connected to my flat screen tv which we use to watch movies (netflix, amazon video, itunes, etc).  I would like to set my mac mini screen saver to the iPhoto library located on my iMac.  Is this possible?

Do I need to have iPhoto installed on both computers?  On the mac mini, when I select the screen saver source choicelist I only get the pre-installed options and a "choose folder".  I can navigate my iMac from this option however, the iPhoto library icon is greyed out...
What am I doing wrong?  I do have iPhoto shared on my iMac from the iPhoto sharing preferences.

  • How can I save the iPhoto library ( ie all current photos) to another media / HD and maintaing the access to it

I am struggling with the export features of iPhoto:
    - That is for the mac, (but also for iOs7 on the iPad would be interesting)
1/ how to generate a backup ( from the iPhoto library) -
    - just rename it and then copy it to another device / HD ?
2/ what is the recommended procedure, to have several Photo - Collections, ( iPhoto libraries)
and then to switch between them.
    Thx in advance

    Back up:
    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store
    Switching between Libraries:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
    or
File Menu -> Switch to Library
    or
Double click on your preferred Library.
There is no recommendation to have multiple libraries. They're inconvenient.

  • I want to save my iphoto library to idisk.

I have iPhoto '11 [v9.1.3].  I have a MobileMe account.  I am already using Time Machine on my Time Capsule to backup my iMac.  I would like to store my pictures on my iDisk account.  I do NOT need to sync the photo's [already doing that on MobileMe to iPad].
    How do I do this?

Do you want to just store the original files to disk or your whole library? How big is the library as reported by the Finder?
If it's just the original image files you want to copy to the iDisk then open the library from the Finder as shown below:
Next, mount your iDisk on the Desktop, open it and go to the folder where you want to copy the image files to.
Locate the "Masters" folder inside the iPhoto Library package and drag it into the selected folder on your mounted iDisk on the Desktop.
WARNING: Do not move the Masters folder out of the library package or move/rename any item inside the library package.
You do know that copying files via the Finder to the iDisk is very slow.  Also if you want to backup again due to new photos in the library you'll have to copy the entire Masters folder again.  You could try using a backup application like Synk which can do incremental backup, i.e. only copying new or modified files. That would greatly reduce your subsequent backups if you plan on doing so.  There are several apps that can do incremental backups. Go to MacUpDate.com and search for "backup" to get a list of possible candidates.  Just be sure they can do incremental backups. The Apple MobileMe Backup application should do incremental backups and it's designed to work efficiently with the iDisk.

It will not open my photos as well. I see this question asked in 2010 but I don't have the files it says that are there.

Where are you storing your iPhoto library? In your Pictures folder or on an external drive?  Or are you trying to open an iPhoto library on a CD?  If you save your iPhoto library to a CD, or DVD you need to copy it to a writable disk, before you can open it in iPhoto.
ANd what is your iPhoto version and your MacOS X version?  What happened, directly, before the problem occured?

  • When I click on iPhoto a box appears saying unable to write to library"iPhoto library" next in smaller print it says check that you have permission to write to the library directory

    How do I correct this?

  • Why is my iPhoto library blank after update?

    Strange things that happened:
    1) I updated to Yosemite from mavericks
    2) accidentally unplugged external drive storing iPhoto library
    3) tried to open iPhoto and it told me that my library was out of date and needed to be updated and rebuilt
    4) went though this process but it crashed
    5) tried reopening iPhoto but it now asked for permissions to be updated
    6) iphoto crashed again during this updating
    7)  ran through this a couple more attempts
    8) opened iPhoto to find a blank library
    9) pointed iPhoto to library but still shows as empty
    10) tried pointing to another library and again to original with no success
    11) opened iPhoto library package and I now have 'old masters' and 'Masters'
    12) several years seem to be missing from these two folders
    13) I have been backing up what I can from these folders
Q1 - Does anyone have any idea where the missing years could be? I did have some photos out of there appropriate years so could they be in another year's folder possibly. What is the best way to search for these in finder?
Q2- What is the best way to rebuild library? note-my time machine does not backup my photo library due to size of 600gb
    Thanks in advance!

You got bitten by a nasty bug.
The upgrade of your library got interrupted, and some of your photos are still in the "Old ..." folders.  There is no known fix for this, that can save your iPhoto library. We are still waiting for a bug fix from Apple. What you can do, copy out your original photos, that are still in the "Old Masters" and "Masters", and save these folders.
Then restore your library from your most recent backup and use the saved "Old " folders  to reimport and add the newest photos, that are missing in your backup.
The "years" folders in "Masters" and "Old Masters"  are the years, when the photos have been imported, not necessarily the years when the photos have been taken.

  • HT1229 How to save photos (iPhoto) on external HD, delete on internal HD

To make room on my internal hard drive, I want to save my iPhoto library on external hard drive and delete some events from my internal hard drive. I don't want to lose them on the external hard drive too.  Is this possible?

Just drag the iPhoto Library from the Pictures folder onto the EHD.  Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down to open the library on the EHD and check to make sure all is well with it.  Once confirmed do the same to open the library on your boot drive so you can delete the events you want to remove.
Note 1: the EHD should be formatted as OS X Extended (journaled) with ownership set to be ignored.
Note 2:  do not delete more than about 100 or so photos at a time from iPhoto.  iPhoto is known to choke when trying to delete large quantities of photos at one time.

  • Saving iPhoto library

I am preparing to wipe my hard disk and do a clean install of Tiger. However, I want to save my iPhoto library, *keeping all of the albums and metadata intact*. How do I do that?

Drag the iPhoto Library in the Pictures item of the Finder's sidebar to another drive or partition, and move it back afterwards. That partition needs to be formatted to Mac OS Extended or the library encapsulated in a Mac OS Extended format disk image; these can be created from the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder.

  • Iphoto library is greyed out

I created a second iphoto folder on a separate portable hard drive and moved my holiday snaps into it to give me more space on my mac hard drive, but when trying to get some photos for my screen saver the iphoto library is greyed out and I can't select it.  Is there a way to select it or change it from being greyed out?

Select system preferences in the dock.  Desktop and screensaver, choose folder, jenniferprice/pictures/iphoto library.
    Don't choose Folder.
Instead, click on the + at the bottom and look for the Media heading on your left. Select iPhoto there.

  • SYstem Preferences does not recognize my iPhoto library.

I have a sort of random problem. I can reset Preferences when restarting my computer and set system preferences for my screen saver and desktop, to use my iPhoto library which is on an external USB for what I think are obvious reasons. Sometimes the iPhoto library is available and sometimes it is not. If it does not show up in the screen saver or desktop pain it is usually grey on my external drive. I just restarted my computer and got the photos I wanted, but I know from experience something will happen and they will be lost.

Locate a file named "com.apple.iApps.plist" and move it to your Desktop (for safe-keeping just in case,) then the next time you re-save your iPhoto Library, and/or change your wallpaper/screensaver settings, these should now work, and stick.

  • I to use iphoto library manager to save corrupted iphoto and each time it saves some and the first time it brings up iphoto, iphone goes into "not responding" mode.  Using mac book pro, iphoto 9.5.1, and maverick 10.9.2.

I've had issues with my iPhoto "not responding" and as a result I am attempting to save my photos to an external hard drive using iPhoto library Manager but each time I start the program it saves some, and then when it starts iPhoto, iPhoto then goes into not responding mode. Using mac book pro, iphoto 9.5.1, and maverick 10.9.2. I have completed all of the photo library first aid steps several times, but it makes no difference, iphoto eventually goes to "not responding."  Initial issues started with Time Machine back ups stopping because of iphoto. Thanks......

Do you have a back up?
If you're just trying to recover the photos you can do that much more simply:
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a Folder called 'Originals' or 'Masters'. (varies according to the version of iPhoto)
Your photos are inside - these are the originals as imported from your camera.
