Saved files don't appear in the finder

I've just saved an Excel file to my mac and it doesn't show in the folder I've saved it into.
If I search for it (using spotlight) it's there; if I start to resave into the same place I can see the first file.
But if I go to the folder in the finder it's invisible.
I've found the problem in a forum, and their solution of restarting the finder works. But I can't do that all the time.
Suggestions, please?
I'm running Lion 10.7.2 on a Mac Pro with 5gb of memory.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account, or is system-wide. Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select “Help” from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Any application you run will behave as if you were running it for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
As Guest, launch the application(s) and test. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

  • Illustrator CS6 files don't appear in the Mac finder.

Has anyone else come across this issue? I create a file, save it and can't see it where I saved it. I go back to Ilustrator to resave and it asks if I want to replace the file that's already there. I press OK and go where the file should be and again it's not there. I open InDesign to see if I can access the file from it's "place" dialogue box and I can't see it. I tried renaming the file but Illustrator asks me if I want to replace the file with the one using the name I never used in the first place. What the heck is going on?
I'd appreciate any help. I haven't been able to use the new version of Illustrator because of this issue. Also, Please don't assume that I don't know where I put my files when I save them. I've been doing this for 20 years

Where do you save? Hard disk or network?

  • In photoshop cc my saved files don't appear as thumbnails with the image, only with the generic tiff or jpeg icon

how do i get actual thumbnail images in photoshop cc instead of generic tiff or jpeg icons??

And what exactly? If you mean system thumbnails, then this has nothing to do with PS. You messed up your file associations then by installing a tool that usurped those associations and they no longer default to the Windows preview function.

  • Files don't appear visually on the desktop

I recently installed Leopard and I've been working with Logic 7.2.
Before upgrading to Leopard When I created new audio files with Logic they usually appeared immediately on the desktop if I assigned them there. With Leopard they do not. They can be seen in the Finder however. They just don't appear on the desktop. I've discovered that if I reboot then the icons show up on the desktop. I hate to have to reboot every time I want to see files that may be on my desktop, especially since I need to have visual confirmation of 20 or 30 files in one session. Is there another way or is this just a Leopard fluke?

This problem shows up with distressing frequency, and I'm not sure why. The preferences for the Desktop, such things as the view options for arrangement, whether to display a preview icon, and so on, are kept in this file:
    "/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist"
Other information is kept in .DS_Store file for the Desktop folder itself, thus when a new file is created in the Desktop folder the .DS_Store file is immediately updated with that information. Finder should be seeing this and updating the view of the Desktop that displays on the monitor, but sometimes it can be a sluggard about doing so.
You could try removing both the finder.plist file, and the Desktop's invisible .DS_Store file (you will need to turn on show invisibles to do so, or use the Terminal) and then relaunch the Finder or log out and back in and see if that fixes the problem. It should not be necessary to restart to see your Desktop files: simply opening the actual Desktop folder in your home folder should show the files, even though the Finder isn't updating the monitor display to reflect the state of the actual folder. Sometimes if you open the folder and select a file there the Finder will then update its display of the Desktop on the monitor. Also, when Finder is being unbearably slow about showing things generally you can force it to update by relaunching it: hold down the Option key and click and hold the click on the Finder icon in the Dock, then select Relaunch from the pop up menu. All folders will close and the Desktop will "blink" and then reappear--hopefully its reappearance will display all the latest files that are present in the Desktop folder.

  • External mass storage device doesn't appear in the finder

When I plug either my camera or my iPhone into the USB port I get a message saying 'no camers was found' and the device doesn't appear in the finder. I can see the phone in iTunes and the camera in its own Canon software, but I can't access the device and manage the files via finder. Getting annoying, have to delete stuff off the camera manually one file at a time. Why don't these devices show up in finder? Using Macbook Pro running Lion, iPhone 4 with iOS5, Canon IXUS 100 IS.

  • File Size Discrepancy Between Photoshop & the Finder

I'm trying to be as brief as I can, so here goes. The specific application (PS) is irrelevant, I think. This is about why an app shows one file size & the Finder shows a different file size. In this case, it's a huge difference, due to the file being an image.
I imported into PS CS, from a CD, an original image, which the Finder shows as 269.4 MB. The file format is TIFF, and the bit-depth is 16, not 8. The Finder shows it as a "TIFF Document." Now. I did a Save As and edited that as a master image file. So, I have two files: the original and the master.
I substantially cropped (deleted) pixels in the master file. So, at the same 16-bit depth, the master file should be smaller in size than the original. Right? However, the Finder shows the file to be 433.6 MB in size! Photoshop shows the file to be a more realistic 185.8 MB in size. Why is the Finder showing such a huge file size? Why is the Finder storing 247.8 MB more than I need? The Finder shows this file as an "Adobe Photoshop TIFF file," so there has been a change in format. The file is flattened; no layers, etc., are involved.
One clue could be that the Finder is storing the larger file size to accommodate Photoshop. If one multiplies 185.8 MB by 3, the result is close to the 433.6 MB figure. The 3 stands for the three color channels (red, green, blue) of each pixel (data element) in the image.
The original image, however, is stored correctly by the Finder. Photoshop and the Finder agree on the 269.4 MB file size. If the above scenario were true, the Finder would be storing the original file at three times the size as shown in Photoshop. In other words, there would be consistency in what the Finder is doing.
I suppose I could just ignore the discrepancy, but I have hundreds of images to process, and I don't want to have to go into PS every time to get a true reading of file sizes. The Finder should be accurate in doing that.
I may be in the wrong forum re: Photoshop, but here I think I can find some expertise re: the Finder, since the Finder's storing procedures are in question, to my mind. It's definitely an app/OS interface problem, as I see it. Simply, I edit a file downward in data, save it, yet the Finder saves it at a larger size.

...do you think a lot of cloning & healing brush might have added to the file size, even though I cropped the image?
Yes, depending on your History settings. The more you work on an image, the more history it accumulates. The more different states and sanpshots you save in the History palette, the bigger the file gets as you work on it, because you're storing (within the file) complete information about the file's state before and after every individual change you make to it. What I don't recall is whether that all gets saved to the file in a Save As, or whether the history is flushed each time the file is Saved.
I should warn you that I am by NO stretch of the imagination a PS expert. I was still using PS 5.0.2 until last February, when I upgraded to CS2 (knowing it will be years before I have enough hardware horsepower to run CS3). I'm a rank beginner with CS2, and if someone else wants to jump in here and point out that I'm all wrong, it will be no surprise to me. And because I never used CS, I don't know whether what I'm describing in CS2 is even relevant here.

  • Photoshop 3D files don´t appear correctly or not at all in After Effects

  • Files don't appear on my desktop

    So, happens this strange thing:
    when i download a file,
i choose as destination the desktop.
The download finishes, but no file is shown!
I have to go in spotlight, search the name of the file,
choose show it in the finder, and then it appears!
I use firefox, but it's not related to it:
for exemple, if i uncompress a file, same thing,
the file is not shown on the desktop.
    I've already repaired permissions,
it should be an osx problem,
but don't want to reinstall it only for this.
Any other things i could try?
    Thanks

In Firefox, you really must make sure to select a destination. I assume you are using 1.5.0.7 (latest) or even 2.0 RC2 (just posted).
It is possible for downloads to go elsewhere (control + click and select destination) in FF (but Safari will ONLY download to the "download designated folder".
When expanding, some ".dmg" images will go into the trash afterwards unless you change the behavior in Disk Utility of what to do (preferences).
Click on desktop and it doesn't show up even though it is done? Sometimes things are in memory, and the Finder has a general amnesia problem with updating itself with changes. A long standing point of ire.
I would create a folder "Downloads" which seems to help keep things organized and in one place (and do hang onto all the updates and installers).

  • Itunes U Files No Longer Appearing in the Device in Itunes

I've been using Itunes U files with no problem for a while now but just yesterday something changed. Before I'd drag them into my device like any other file and they would appear in the "music" subfolder of my device. Fair enough. I could listen to them and delete them from there when done.
Now they don't appear anywhere in my itunes. That is, I can put them in my device and listen to them there, but as they don't appear in the music folder anymore (or the podcast folder... or in their own) I cannot delete them. This wouldn't be a problem if I had a big player - but I intentionally have a small player (First Generation 1 GB Nano) so that I limit my options and force my listening behavior.
My only present work around is restoring them to the factory settings. It's kind of a pain to do every other day as you can imagine but what's a boy to do? So... what's going on? A new bug? Some new thing I've missed? Help!!!!!

I have my entire music collection ripped using iTunes and stored on a Mac mini running Windows. It is all in Apple Lossless format and shared with Windows Media Player and Media Center which can play the Apple Lossless files thanks to a solution I came up with along with assistance from Milenko Mitrovic.
While I do deliberately chose to embed 600x600 pixel artwork in each track (disk space is cheap), I also put a folder.jpg of the same artwork in each album folder for the benefit of WMP and Media Center.
The steps I use to do this are as follows.
    1. Rip the CD using iTunes
    2. Tell iTunes to download album artwork for that Album. Life is made much easier if you only do one album at a time.
    3. Look in your Music folder for the iTunes folder and look in that for the Album Artwork folder
    4. In the Album Artwork folder will be a Download folder and in that various subfolders eventually leading to a file called something like A392573AD3DE300C-45855BDAB6F38792.itc2 by checking the file creation date/time you will be able to confirm it corresponds with the one you just downloaded.
    5. Use the free utility bitmaprip available here http://mark0.net/soft-bitmaprip-e.html to 'extract' the real artwork from inside Apple's proprietary itc2 file. You can then move this to the iTunes album folder for that album and name it folder.jpg
If you then like I do, want to make this artwork embedded, then do the following extra steps.
    6. Select one of the tracks for the album
    7. Copy the artwork to the clipboard
    8. Clear the downloaded artwork
    9. Delete any folders left in your Album Artwork folder so they do not confuse you for the next album
    10. Select all the tracks for the album
    11. Paste the artwork in

    Hi,
My iPod touch 2nd gen doesn't appear in the finder nor on the desktop when connected, is it normal maybe because its a flash drive and not a harddrive, I don't know...

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • I have a DVD that still appears in the finder even though it is not in the computer. What do I do?

I have a DVD that still appears in the finder, under "places", with the "burn" icon next to it, even though the DVD is no longer in the computer's reader. How did that happen and what do I do? Thanks!

Humph... I know I have had these experience myself, but don't remember how I solved it.
What happens if you mark it, and then right-click on the blank gray area (under "places" for example)? Do you then get the "remove from sidebar" option?

  • Time capsule does not appear in the finder.

My time capsule appears in airport utility. It is ready to go. I have it on ethernet because airport isn't a very powerful wireless router. The time capsule does not appear in the finder. It does not appear in the disc utility. It does not appear in time machine. The airport utility will do factory resets, get it ready for internet, whatever. The rest of my net work can not see it.
I have done the finder preferences. I have restarted the computer, jiggered the sharing preferences, done factory resets, tried to find sparce bundles and sparse bundles, reset the finder, force quit finder, tried to find finder plsts, trawled the discussion pages, tried to find server addresses and apple ids. Nothing seems to work.
Time capsule never seems to work as smoothly as it supposed to. I shudder to present my problems to apple support because I know that its a long road and will probably end in tears. But here I am, naked before this disappointing edifice.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

What is the make and model number of your modem?
I have a microwave modem on my roof. I don't think that has anything to do with this. I am not using my airport for a wireless router, only as a time capsule connected by ethernet. The Airport Utility calls my airport : Airport Extreme 802.11 ( 1st Generation )
Is the Time Capsule acting as your main router or is another device handling those services?
No, I have a lyncsis router. The wireless router function on airports doesn't seem to work very well. I don't think thats a problem with mine. My brothers have gone with lyncsis as well.
Was the Time Capsule visible in the Finder before, and is now "lost", or has it never appeared in the Finder?
It appeared on my previous laptop. That died. Now I have an imac. The airport has never appeared on the imac.
Thanks for trying to help so quickly
