Saved Passwords disappearing one-by-one, FF 5.0

Since upgrading to Firefox 5.0, some of my stored passwords are disappearing. Earlier this morning I logged into a webmail site where I have more than one account (with saved password). Later, I went to log on to another account on the site, and I noticed the username/password used earlier, were no longer in the list. I checked in 'Tools - Options - Saved Passwords', and that entry was gone. This has happened to multiple passwords to multiple sites. How can I prevent my passwords disappearing?

-> go to Tools Menu -> Options -> Privacy -> History section -> Firefox will: select "Use Custom Settings for History" -> REMOVE Checkmark from "Permanent Private Browsing mode" -> place CHECKMARKS on:
1) Remember my Browsing History 2) Remember Download History 3) Remember Search History 4) Accept Cookies from sites -> click Exceptions... button -> click Remove All Sites at the bottom of "Exception - Cookies" window
4a) Accept Third-party Cookies -> under "Keep Until" select "They Expire" -> click Show Cookies button -> select the Cookies you want to Delete and click Remove Cookies -> click Close button
-> REMOVE CHECKMARK from CLEAR HISTORY WHEN FIREFOX CLOSES
-> When using the Location Bar, suggest: select History and Bookmarks
-> Click OK on Options window
Check and tell if its working.

Check exception list of your Firefox password Manager and check if your site is there or not?

• My saved passwords disappeared unexpectedly.

I don't know what or why but my saved passwords have disappeared a couple of different times now. I've read the article on passwords, but that has not solved the mystery or answered my question.
== This happened ==
Just once or twice

Do you mean names and passwords in the Password Manager or do you mean that you are no longer logged on to (remembered by) websites after closing and restarting Firefox?
If the latter happens then you have a problem with cookies that are not kept or the file that stores the cookies is corrupted.
Make sure that you do not use Clear Recent History to clear the "Cookies" and the "Site Preferences"

• Why did my saved passwords disappear, and now even with private browsing off I cannot get Firefox to save the passwords over again. Care to help on this????

The most recent version of Firefox just loaded onto my computer and all of my previously saved passwords are gone. To top it off I went in to the Privacy settings and turned off private browsing in order to start saving my passwords again, and it will not save, it doesn't even give me the pop up to ask if I want to save it. Care to help here? I'm way beyond angry right now, some of those passwords were rather unique and I will have a hard time recalling them exactly so not looking forward to having to reset them...

You can force Firefox to reimport the passwords from the signons.sqlite file.
* reset the <b>signon.importedFromSqlite</b> pref on the <b>about:config</b> page to the default value via the right-click context menu
* delete the <b>logins.json</b> file in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed
When you restart Firefox then you should have the signon.importedFromSqlite pref with the value set to true and you should have the passwords imported in the Password Manager unless there may have been errors.
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
You can open the <b>about:config</b> page via the location/address bar.
You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

• Saved passwords disappeared after forced reboot of the system.

As I said. After force reboot of the system the list of all my passwords was cleaned up. Bookmarks are ok. FF was closed, before reboot. Any ideas how to return them ?

Hi Ishini,
No problem. Firefox would not keep a back up of "key3.db" anywhere. So, if you want to recover your passwords, try to use the following tool.
* Piriform Recuva
Just download the free trial and attempt to recover the "key3.db" file. Just point it to your Firefox installation directory.
This should solve your problem, but there is no guarantee that the file will be there.
So, if this helped, mark it as helpful, so other users who are facing the same or similar issues, can resolve their problem as well.
Have a good one,
Michael.

• Saved passwords disappear from HP SimplePass vault

Occasionally passwords that I have saved in my HP Simplepass vault disappear from the vault, along with the corresponding Simplepass launch site. Luckily I keep a backup of my Simplepass passwords so I can import the lost passwords again but it is extremely annoying to have to do this all the time. Does anyone have any ideas what is causing some passwords to disappear?

Hi @Juda_Plasma ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I will do my best to assist you. I have read about your HP Pavilion 15-n271ea Notebook and having issues with Simplepass.  Here is a link to troubleshoot the software.
The section I would try first is Update the device driver. The fingerprint reader hardware requires a device driver to allow software to control it and does require an update.
If this does not help I would uninstall the software and reinstall it.
Hope this helps you.
Thanks.

• Saved passwords keep disappearing when I reboot my MBP

There must be something wrong in my settings........ don't know what it is though...... The saved passwords disappear when I reboot my MacbookPro. I use Firefox 8.0.1

Do you mean names and passwords in the Password Manager or do you mean that you are no longer logged on to (remembered by) websites after closing and restarting Firefox?<br />
There is a difference between remembering the name and password in the Password Manager and a "remember me" check box on a web page.<br />
The latter usually involves the creation of a special "remember me" cookie that is stored on your computer and that is send to the server.<br />
If that "remember me" cookie is removed or gets corrupted or is not send to the server then the server won't remember you and you need to sign in once again.

• [SOLVED]I've lost my saved passwords after changing hardware

I had to change my motherboard and processor the other day and immediately after that incident, I seem to have lost all of my passwords. The reason I'm certain of this is because the only password that's saved is from a site I only used after this incident. The only thing I'd done recently other than change hardware was update firefox to 35.02.
Even after restoring my key3.db to a version 4 months old, not a single difference was made. The password manager still only has that one single username and password, rather than the many I had before. Other than the change of hardware, the boot partition and drives are the same and nothing was uninstalled. Also, I'm not sure if it's related, but my logins.json file is 1KB while the logins.json.corrupt is 109KB. Were the passwords saved in there? What should I give a try?
EDIT: Solved with a post by Chris at http://codeverge.com/mozilla.support.firefox/saved-passwords-disappeared-on-update/2006894
I'm not sure how to close this ticket, so feel free to

"You can force Firefox to re-import your old passwords. Here's how:
1. In the location bar, type "about:config" (without the quotes) and
press <Enter>.
2. Click [I'll be careful, I Promise!]
3. Search for the preference: signon.importedFromSqlite
4. Right click on signon.importedFromSqlite, and select "Reset".
5. Go to Help-->Troubleshooting_Information, then click on [Open
Folder]. That will open Windows Explorer in your Firefox profile.
6. Close Firefox
7. In your profile folder, delete the file "logins.json"."
Thanks Chris!

• In security saved password,

Dear Sir/Ma'am
I cann't see a saved password(only one) from saved list after clicking show password,
That password shows in only black bullets even after clicking "show".
Plse help.
Thanking You

First, please update to Firefox 14.0.1 Update Firefox to the latest version.
Then, if that doesn't correct your issue, can you give a bit more clarity? Are you going to Page info and trying to view passwords? Viewing and deleting passwords

• I want to update a subset of my remembered passwords via the "saved passwords" list; not one at a time when I use them. Is there a way to do this?

A lot of my saved passwords are for different pages on the company internal network. Since there is only one password for all these pages it would be easier if I could change all of them in one go when I change the password.
I haven't seen any way to do this. Have I overlooked something or is it just a missing feature?

My best guess would be to follow the process of changing the backup as per the posts I have come across to point to a new drive...let it copy, and then point the backup back to the original time capsule again.
My only fear is that its going to them do the copy process twice...which when 1Tb could be laboursome to say the least...especially to and from a time capsule on a 10/100 network!
Thanks!
Mountain Lion allows TM to backup to two different locations.. You can use the TC and a USB disk plugged into the TC.
It can then swap itself around or you can physically move disks around when you want to retain data.
Your guess.. of using the copy the backup to another location will also work.
Let me suggest it is no bad idea to backup.. a disk image with a different utility.. superduper does disk images only for free.. and you can do it from disk utility itself. A disk image can be far easier to recover from then TM which can be several hours and even then lots of stuff seems to need manual moving around.

• All my saved layers disappeared. Shows only one locked black layer.with red sripes

All my saved layers disappeared. Shows only one locked black layer.with red sripes

Apple changed the save behaviour several times in the past few versions of MacOsX - there is a good article about this:
http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/os-x-mountain-lion-how-apple-rescued-save-as
The trouble is, you should (I know, not much of a help to you at this point) always create backups AND work with versions. So save many versions (x1, x1a, x2, x2a, etc), because when you work within one master file you run the risk of these type of accidents and there is always a tiny change your file becomes corrupt for some external reason. You never know. Disk space is cheap, losing your work is often a real hassle, and can become very problematic when dealing with clients.
So, save many versions, and make backups of your work. And never NEVER open your original files in any other software - always use a duplicate. You never know what that software might do to your files.
Anyway, have you tried searching for the file name on your mac? Maybe, just maybe there is a duplicate lying around somewhere with the layers intact.

• How can I merge bookmarks and saved passwords from two computers onto one computer?

Before I got rid of my old computer, I backed up my profile folder on a thumb drive. Then, I got a new computer and started customizing firefox, adding bookmarks and new saved passwords, without ever uploading my passwords and bookmarks from my old computer 's profile. How can I add the bookmarks from my old computer's profile folder onto my new computer's new firefox profile?

That is about saving your current bookmarks to an HTML file because you would lose those when you restore a JSON backup from the backup.

i cannot get this to save a site or username and password and cannot figure out why

The website may be using autocomplete=off to prevent Firefox from saving the name and password.
You can remove autocomplete=off with a bookmarklet to make Firefox save the name and password.

• Multiple Passwords on One Website

Is Safari not able to track multiple passwords on a single Website? On my work's Website, there are a number of distinct areas of the site that require different logins. If I save a password in one area, the next time I go to a different area, the password that was saved there has been replaced by the one from the other area. It seems to be saving the passwords by domain and not by individual page. Is there something I can change to correct that?

It would be nice if Apple made the saves more specific.
I agree, and that would be good reason to submit feedback to Apple about this, using their Mac OS X feedback form.
But you don't have to use the same password. (I'm not sure if that's what you meant.) Safari saves multiple username/password sets. In other words, for username A, it saves the corresponding password A. If you begin to type in username B, it will autofill the corresponding password B.
(Edit: I think I see now that you're saying you're using the same username in multiple places, so you can't know what password Safari is filling in. That's a problem, you're right. :-| )
