Saving a booklet as a PDF to print?

So in InDesign CS4 I've made a 24 page booklet on my Mac. Each  page is of an A5 size and horizontal, so when you see the spread, there  are 2 A5 pages to be printed onto each A4 piece of paper. So 24 A5 pages  in total means 12 A4 pages. In the InDesign document when I go to the  Print Summary preview, this is the case. This is good, it is what I  want.
I have Exported it to save it as a PDF file on my USB so I can print it  off the PC computer here that is connected to a printer. However when I  open up the file on either computer, there are 24 pages in total, each  of an A4 size. This is not what I want! I tried again, Exporting as a Spread, however the front and back covers are still A4 size and all the middle pages are in sequential order, which will not work when I print them and fold them together.
Can someone please tell me how I can get the file to save as a PDF, but  still retain the original format of each page being A5 sized, with 2  placed on each page to be printed, so that I can print the pages double-sided in order to fold them together in correct order as a book?
Thanks

See InDesignSecrets » Blog Archive » Acrobat’s Adobe PDF Printer Replaced in Snow Leopard for more information about printing to PDF in Snow Leopard.
If you need to take the file to print on a PC anyway, IF that macine also has ID it will be much easier to do the imposition on that using Print Booklet and just direct, or print to PDF (that still works on PC) and you'll have a booklet file you can print from anywhere.

  • Saving Illustrator CS4 file to PDF for printing. NO FORUMS CAN HELP

I have put threads on the PDF forum, they told me to put it on Illustrator forum and still know one has an answer, Tried to contact Adobe about this and just got a run around. Can anyone please help?
My problem results from when I save my file from Adobe Illustrator to a PDF for printing. After saving from Illustrator to a PDF and proofing it on screen all my gradients and other elements are where I need them to be on the page. But when I upload them to my printing company template all the gradients and so on are not even close to be in the right spot. How can I solve this problem, Is there a new setting in CS4 I need to know? Because I never had this problem with Illustrator CS3.

    Hi Reggie,
I'm far from an Illustrator expert, but let's see if we can gather som more information form you that might help me, or someone else, figure out what's going wrong. Can you post a screnn capture of the arwork in Illustrator so I can see what the gradients are and how they're positioned? Use the little camera Icon thing in the toolbar above the message editing space on the web page.
Next, tell us about the printer's template. What application is it made in? What version?
What version of Illustrator and what OS are you using to create your art?
Is it only the gradients that are in the wrong place? Maybe a screen shot of that would help too.

  • When saving a document as a PDF for printing, I lose pages, clip art, and my orginal format. Help!

I have created some forms for our congregation to fill in with answers on adobe forms central. When I go to turn it into a PDF for printing for a hard copy, (not all our members have internet) when i save it to a PDF, it doesn't save all the pages and formats it differently then show on the screen i programmed it onto. How do I fix this issue?

    Hi;
In the "Feature Tutorials/Help" linked from the top of the main page of the Forums: Feature Tutorials / Help
There is a Tutorial on "Creating and distributing fillable PDF Forms": Tutorial: Creating and distributing fillable PDF forms
The main thing to look at is the "View" setting and for PDF set it to "Page View", the page breaks you define in Page View will be used in the PDF, there are also "implicit" page breaks added automatically based on the page size.
For the issue with clip art see this FAQ: Image does not show up in PDF

  • How can I print a booklet where each pdf page is vertically placed on each half page instead of one pdf on each booklet page?

I've printed a booklet before but each pdf page had two powerpoint slides on each pdf file.  This binder has one powerpoint slide on each pdf page and if I try to print it as a binder, each pdf page takes up the whole half-page on the booklet.  I want to print two pdf slides on each page of the booklet so when I open the booklet, there are four powerpoint slides printed.  So I basically want to combine the ability to print multiple slides per page but in a booklet form.

Why not reconstruct the pages in InDesign they way you want the double pages to appear. There may even be an imposition script available that will do the trick. You could then output to pdf all the pages you want the full spread on. Leave the original to create the pages you wanted left as is.
You can ask in the ID forum about an imposition script. I know there was one with CS4, there may have been one with CS3.

  • How can I retain hyperlinks while saving a webpage as PDF via Print?

How can I retain hyperlinks while saving a webpage as PDF via Print?
This is the title of an apple forum question, and it is a bug in both Safari 5.1.3 and under, and I find it to also occur in Firefox browser (at least 9.* 10.*, 11.0), running on Lion OS (10.7.2, 10.7.3). See:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3212301?start=0&tstart=0
Under the newer Mac OS mentioned, and Firefox 10.2, 11.0, 9.*, if I select:
File -> Print -> PDF -> Open PDF in Preview"
(and view / save the PDF in Preview, you will see none of the links in the original web page are active
    or using
File -> Print -> PDF -> Save as PDF...
same problem. Try this using any Wikipedia page, for example.
When this problem was posed in Apple forums, by a user of the Safari browser, it was found to be a bug (since Aug 2011) fixed in a Safari browser build 5.1.4 circa Jan 2012. I tried the newer Safari browser and sure enough the problem went away (except that links embedded in the PDF no longer appeared as blue text - ARGH - but "hover over" with the cursor showed the link and clicking the link in Preview viewer activated the link in a browser window).
So I post this to the Mozilla community, please fix this 'cause I don't want to have to switch over to Safari browser every time I want to archive a PDF with active links!!!!
P.S. I did a spot-check and with the newer add-on Enjoy Reading 1.0.1 and FF11.0. When the Enjoy reading formatted version appears in the browser window, all URLs/links are preserved and highlighted in blue, but when I print that browser window as PDF, the links are dead (don't work) even though they appear in blue in the PDF.
So, what's going on, can the Safari fix be researched and applied to FF?
Also, on some forums, people are responding, Well, try installing Acrobat reader. Well, I don't want to, Preview reader has worked fine for me for years.

    Thanks jscher2000.
RE: -- '''Generally speaking, PDF converters that work by intercepting a print job do not have access to the URLs behind links in the page.''' --
I cannot say I agree. I could email you a PDF clipping or two (generated from Safari on Mac OS, in its native capability with no add-ons) that shows you otherwise. When I used PC platforms I did have to install PDF converters (tried both free and expensive ones) that did what I describe.
I cannot try the add-on you mention, '''Print Pages to Pdf.''' in Firefox. It shows in my browser and Mac OS platform "Not available for your platform." So I am guessing it was written for the PC version of Firefox.
The Mac OS has had a native PDF-creation functionality for as many years as I have been using it; I used PC prior to that, Win3.1 through XP and NT. And on my PC, I bought (and at work, my employer bought $$$, I had to justify three levels up to management the ability to create PDFs on my work PC) some Adobe functionality to CREATE pdf's (readin's free and easy, makin' em's costly on the PC).
I've gone and dug through some of my (Mac) doc and clipping archives, and I find that stuff I created after about Dec 2008 or so seems to eliminate all link functionality. When viewed in the Apple native "Preview" application (sort of Apple's equivalent to Adobe Acrobat reader, ships with the OS): link tags are highlighted/tinted, clicking a link opens a (default) browser and takes you there; hover-over the tag text shows the actual link. (Of course, not all old links are still VALID or point to the desired source.)
I could, in Safari or FF browser window and with no add-ons or Adobe paid products whatsoever, use the native OS method to create PDF's from any application (word processor, spreadsheet, browser, etc) via the menu File -> Print -> Save as PDF menu and create a PDF that had active hyperlinks. In Apple OS Lion 10.7.3, I still can't when it uses this broken WebKit interface, links are "dead" as a doornail until a fix is distributed in WebKit for a future Lion release. It seems this functionality died at least as far back as Leopard OS 10.6.8, but don't quote me on that. Also, my version of Pages 2009 version 4.1(923) (sorta like Word) STILL creates a PDF document that preserves (1) text hyper-links within the document, and (2) web links (in the PDF) that open the browser. I just made a test document.
When all you can see in the PDF is the tag text, there is nothing to copy-paste to follow any link. Also, hypertext links are often used by authors to create links to other points in a document: now even *that* is broken in the PDF version of the documents I retrieve from the web and print from FireFox (Broken in Safari 5.1.3 and earlier but fixed in 5.1.4).
Try this on the PC, in your browser and print a news clipping as PDF, do the links in the PDF work? What products do this, and what don't? I would bet the machine with a full Adobe suite this will work flawlessly. (Why should a PC user have to pay hundreds of $ to create this functionality in what I thought was an open standard (PDF)? But that's talkin' religion, let's not start that.)
    Some folks might say,
go online and find the original source doc in your browser. Or,
go and add those links manually using the Preview edit add-link capability (hunh? no thanks) , or
save each item worth saving as an HTML archive instead of a PDF (argh, creating a whole directory in the process, I might add, including ads). Or,
who needs PDFs, everything is online.
    Or, buy some Adobe product.
I think they miss my point. This is a real strange dumbing-down of archival PDF documents, or at least a destruction of the ability to use PDF as an archive that retains its links and references.
C.F. the guy who has archives of scientific papers, and the old material all cross-references nicely but after date X there are no working links.

  • Can't print .indd booklet to PDF; opens print utility instead of Acrobat

Thanks in advance for any help you can lend.
I have a 16 page .indd document that I'm trying to export via "print booklet", using Adobe PDF 9.0 as my printer. I'm a Windows user, so I may not have this exactly right, but printing to PDF from Print Booklet on Mac is a two-step process -- first you printto Postscript file using the Acrobat 9 ppd, then you distill the file. • Print Booklet as a PDF in InDesign CS4

I am trying to print a ID document as a booklet 2-up saddel stiched.  I am using a mac on lepoard.  I choose Adobe PDF 9.0 as my printer and set everything up.  It goes through the entire print process it sends it to the printer, BUT it never brings up the save file dialog box and It shows that it completes the printing process, but it never creates a document.  Could someone please advise?
I attached a screen shot showing the document as completed, and the print summary.  Let me know if I haven't supplied enough information.

I may not be placing this response in the correct order in the queue, but I work on a PC platform, and our company just got around to installing CS4 for us humble communicators. I experienced the same problem in trying to create a booklet as a PDF file! I'd go through the motions, the computer would go through the motions, yet no file appeared, as if the file were aborted at the last minute. I finally figured out how to create a Postscript file that I could open in Acrobat Reader Pro 9 and then save as a PDF...that is, if I chose the correct paper positon, i.e., landscape. I'll echo that "Sheesh" of an earlier poster. Is there a need for a workaround in the latest version of InDesign, or has this glitch been addressed?
By the way, thanks for the information--you preserved my sanity today, many months after the original posting!

  • Saving as a PDF in print page order [not actual page order]?!?!

    Hiya,
I've got a 20 page newsletter, each page A4, all created in InDesign CS3 [nice and simple]. I want to print the document in print page order [as appose to actual page order] on our printer here at work, because it's clever and can fold and staple to create a book/newsletter etc! In InDesign, I can obviously use the 'print booklet' option to do just this, and it works great; all my pages are printed in the correct order, I can also choose to print 2-sided, all lovely. But I was wondering if there is an option somewhere to be able to save my InDesign doc as a PDF in print page order [front with back, page 2 with 19 etc] - as printing a PDF of my artwork seems to solve a problem i was having in the thread I posted up yesterday.
    Cheers guys

This is called "imposition". Does your OS and InDesign version come with the "Print as Booklet" option?
If not, you can enter this range into the page number "Range" box on exporting:
    20,1,2,19,18,3,4,17,16,5,6,15,14,7,8,13,12,9-11
(Typed from memory; -- please check)
If I then print this PDF to my HP with the options "double sided" and "2 pages per sheet", it comes out exactly the way it should.
(Waiting for the printer ... hold on.)
Well whaddoyouknow -- I got the numbering right first time. Perfect!

  • Creating a multipage PDF that prints 2 booklets side by side?

Hi I am a designer with NO pre-press experience and I need some help!
I am trying to print a booklet that is set at 8.5 x 7 as a 2 up document on 8.5 x14 paper. My problem is that I don't want the booklets to print consecutive pages (right now they would print 1,2 3,4 5,6 etc.) I want them to print side by side so that when the sheets are cut we would have 2 completed and collated books.
I know that I could just duplicate each page and print that, but I am wondering if there is a quicker way to make this happen? We have over 100 different multipage PDFs to print so I'm looking for a lean way to get this done.
Is this possible? Do I need to purchase pagination software?

When I need to do this I generally make a file set up as a single page (8.5 x 7, in this case) for easy design, then create a second, non-facing doc at two-up size (8.5 x 14) and place the pages from the first file int the second tow times so I have two copies per page. I use the Multi-page importer script for this: InDesignSecrets » Blog Archive » Zanelli Releases MultiPageImporter for Importing both PDF and INDD Files

  • ID CS5 Print Booklet - page orientation isn't printing correctly

I've been printing the same eight page booklet in CS4 with the print booklet feature just fine for a while now. I opened the file in CS5 and could not get the file to orient correctly. The first spread is always correct, then subsequent pages are cut off because they're printed landscape on a portrait sheet. Page setup is set to 12x18 and the preview looks correct in the dialogue, but when it processes through my rip the pages are altered.
Note, I saved the file down as .idml and reopened in CS4 and it printed perfectly, just as I remembered.
Is anyone else having this problem?

I have the same problem printing to a Canon ImageRUNNER C1 via a Q1 RIP server from a Mac using OS 10.6.
The main issue is printing in Landscape. When the print is duplexed, single-sided, or booklet - if the print has multiple pages printed in Landscape orientation it rotates the second page (and every page after) 90 degree from the first page.
This makes booklet-style printing impossible without printing to PDF and duplex printing out of Acrobat.
The curious thing is: 1- The first page is ALWAYS fine. Every page after that rates and 2- Portrait pages print fine, even duplexed. If I print a four page booklet with two pages duplexed on each side of a Portrait-oriented page I have no problem.
If this is a driver error it is specific to InDesign CS5 as the files print fine out of Acrobat, InDesign CS4, and even InDesign CS3 - if I save it back that far.
Canon claims it's not their issue and doesn't think it's worth any type of driver update.
Also, when the same file is printed to a lesser quality color printer I can duplex in landscape without problems.

  • PDF Form Printing Text, but no Form

I have an accountant trying to print a PDF Form.  It cannot be saved, but only printed.  When the form is completed and printed, it only prints out the entered text, and nothing else.  All other PDF docs print fine
    IT conditions:
She prints to an older Panasonic Copy machine
    Her printer connection is Shared
Another PC can print the same form 100% fine and that machine goes through here PC to the printer.
    Completed Troubleshooting:
First discovered she was on Reader 10.1.3 and the other PC was 10.1.1
Did a complete uninstall of 10.1.3 to include deleting from registry
    Installed 10.1.1 with same issue.
Verified all a printer and reader settings are the same for both PCs
    Attempted work arounds:
Installed doPDF virtual printer to try and save the completed form as PDF
PDF prints text and form text, but not the field borders for each block
Installed Nitro PDF as default PDF reader, same issue.  Will not print out the field borders.
    Additional Troubleshooting:
Ran full virus and malware/spyware scans with no issues.
    Specific Form:
    https://forms.in.gov/Download.aspx?id=4722
Searched all over the internet with Google and have had no luck finding any suggestions

When you print it, the box that pops up should say, under the Comments and Forms box, "document and markups".  Hope that helps.

  • Exporting a PDF for print, the PDF does not show a shadow effect

I have a drop shadow effect on an EPS object and some type that does not appear when I export the file as a PDF for print. The settings I have it set to are: Adobe PDF Preset: "High Quality Print", Interactive Elements: "Include Appearance", and Color Conversion: "No Color Conversion".
If anyone could help me I would greatly appreciate it!

    Will,
Yes, I set my transparency blending space to CMYK. It didn't work.
I don't have a particular reason I am using an EPS over AI other than that's the type of file this object (logo) was saved as. I can get an AI. Is there any particular reason you recommend not using an EPS?
