Saving a CS4 InDesign file in CS5 gives me an error

I have an InDesign file that I originally created in CS4, but when I opened in CS5, I get an error saying:
"Cannot save 'Filename.indd' under a new name"
I tried to export to IDML as suggested in the forums, but I get an error message stating:
"Disk may be locked or full"
I can open the document in CS5 just fine, but when I try to save my changes, it gibes me the original error stated above.
Thanks...

I think I figured it out. For some reason I could not copy the file under the original directory I had my .indd file.  I am on a Mac OS and my Finder kept asking me to "Authenticate" the CS4 file before I could open it.  Anyway, I took the newly edited CS5 file and saved into a different folder and everything worked fine.  I am not sure why it "locked" my file so I couldn't overwrite it, but now all is good...
Thanks..

Someone had mentioned the possibility of saving each individual layer in Photoshop as a png file and importing into Indesign and adjusting it in there
What do you mean by "adjust"? Editing of Photoshop images should be done in Photoshop.
Sure, it's possible to save individual layers from an image in Photoshop as inidvidual files in a variety of formats, but what's the point? You could just as easily import the layered file, then copy/paste it into a new layer for each layer in the image and use layer visibility to control which ones show. I don't think that will do you a lot of good, though, if you use adjustment layers or opacity controls on the layer in Photoshop.

  • Error Message when Double-clicking a CS4 InDesign File; Won't Open

I recently installed CS4, upgrading from CS2. Before installing CS4, I could double-click the icon for the file and it would open in InDesign CS2. After installing CS4, when I double-click an InDesign file icon, I get an error message that Windows cannot open the file and needs to know which program should be used. I check the "Select the program from a list" and a window opens that lists several of the applications I have installed. Neither InDesign versions are on the list, so I "Browse" to the Adobe folder in which both InDesigns reside. I then select a version (it doesn't matter which one; neither work) but then it doesn't appear in the list and my "selection" reverts to the "recommended" Photoshop CS4.
I can understand if this function has disappeared in CS4, and we now have to open a file using the "open" menu item, but I can't understand why neither verison "sticks" in the "Open With" window.
Any suggestions? I'm using Windows XP SP2.
    Thanks,
    Lloyd

That's what I thought. I tried the folder options association trick at http://forums.adobe.com/message/2864550#2864550, which kind of worked.  Now, when I double-click on an InDesign file icon, InDesign CS4 opens,  but the file does NOT open. Looks like I'll have to reinstall, unless  someone has an addition to the solution.
    Thanks!

  • Opening InDesign files in CS5 created in CS4 I get this message.

I have a few files that I'm unable to open, CS4 or CS5, I created them in CS4 when trying to open I get this message "Can not open such and such file Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file may be missing, or the file maybe open in another application.
I'm unable to open in either version. hoping some one has a way of getting them open, I have back ups but they give me the same message.
    Thank you in advance
    Mark

The files are stored on the P drive, the Adobe drive that was created while using VC in CS4, plus I weekly back that drive up, those files are the same way. Although I'm not able to use the VC like before I have continued to store files there.
But yes I have copied to the desktop, tried the the open comand in the file menue and still get the same message.
Since these files have a rose I am migrating the files to my mine hard drive just in case that maybe the reason. Do you have any other suggestions.
    Thanks for the reply.

  • Saving or exporting a file in CS5 as a CS3 file.

I have CS5 at home and CS3 at work. Transporting files out of CS5 are not compatible with CS3 and there is no option of either saving or exporting files out of CS5 to/for CS3.
Help. I had this function in CS4 - this is a huge problem.
Is there something I am missing?

    Yes; CS4.
InDesign has never been able to export to a file readable by any version except itself or the one previous. InDesign CS5 files can be exported as .idml files readable by InDesign CS5 and InDesign CS4. InDesign CS4 is needed to export an .inx file readable by InDEsign CS4 and InDEsign CS3.
Each version of InDesign introduces features unsupported by the previous version. When you export as .inx or .idml the file must be fully compatible with the current version and all its features as well as as-compatible-as-possible with the previous version. This can get complicated to build into the file format. To ask that the format also support earlier versions is unreasonable. That would require the file to fully support the current version and all its advanced features, as well as save the same data in a way that two or more earlier versions can read, each with their own unique feature lists.
As well as losing and formatting unsupported by earlier versions when you go through this CS5 > CS4 > CS3 process, you also have a high risk of text reflowing each time you switch from one version to another. It is a terrible way to work. If you must share files between your home computer and your work computer, pick one version of InDesign and use that exclusively. That means either having and using CS3 at work or installing CS5 at home.

  • Transfer CS4 Mac file to CS5 windows

I have a file I created in Indesign cs4 on my mac. I want to transfer it
over to a person using a windows based computer running cs5.
I have tried a .indd, .incx, and .imcl. Is this even possible?

I bet the other person really has VERSION 5 which is CS3....
For that you'd need to send .inx, and don't forget to package the links. Mac fonts will be useless on the PC, but OpenType and Windows flavored TrueType work on both platforms, leaving out the licensing issues of packaging fonts. I'd make a PDF, too, and sent that along so they know what the file is supposed to look like since it will no dobt be at least subtley differnt if converted from CS4 to CS3.

  • Problem importing Premier Pro CS4 files into CS5

I have loaded Premier Pro CS5 onto a spanking new 64 bit machine.  When I import a CS4 project file into CS5, it asks me to locate the raw video files but nothing else.  All titles with graphics in them are without the graphics. The text is OK.  The graphics have disappeared.  How do I import a project so the titles are complete and don't have to be rebuilt?  .

Can you please give your system specs?
In particular, how many physical HDD you have as well as memory. OS, CPU etc.
Also - what are the scratch disc settings in Premiere?
Finally - what is the video type - SD? HD?
Please give as many details as possible as it sounds like your system is going into overdrive.

I don't know from which version your file comes, at least CS6, but could also be CC or CC 2014.
Or ask to get an IDML, but an IDML workflow might change the document.

  • Error linking Illustrator file to Indesign file

I am working on a flyer (in InDesign) and I am trying to link 2 different illustrator map files to it. One is a illustrator map (on one artboard) and it links perfectly. The problem is with the second illustrator map file. It has 4 artboards (but I only want to use a map on artboard 3). Is it possible to link a illustrator file (with multiple artboards) and only show a certain board in my indesign file? I keep getting a error message.
    thanks

You may have to reset the preferences of either InDesign or Illustrator. There could be corruption in either application:
Here are directions for restoring InDesign preferences:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/526990
Here are directions for Illustrator preferences:
Quit the application. Launch Illustrator and IMMEDIATELY hold down Ctrl + Alt + Shift (Windows) or Command + Option + Shift (Macintosh). You’ll receive no prompt, and the program will open as usual.
Alternatively, quit the program and search for the “Adobe Illustrator [version] Settings” folder and delete it. Insert the version (for example, CS5) in the search string.

  • Getting error when publish fla file in CS5 environment

When I publish a "fla" a file in CS5 environment, got following error.
ComponentShim (Compiled Clip), Line 1 5000: The class 'fl.controls.TextInput' must subclass 'flash.display.SimpleButton' since it is linked to a library symbol of that type.
    Please help with a solution.
    Thanks

    Thanks for your response..
But didn't get much clarity from your suggestion. Hope you have deleted all button controls / components from fla file and re-create from Library..rt?
Have any simple way to do this? In my case  around thirty controls in this fla file. So it is very difficult to delete and add the same. When we remove these controls missing th instance name also.
    Please suggest.

  • Indesign file won't open native CS5 file, gives me "missing plug-in or being used?

I've tried to open both a CS4 and CS5 file from another designer, and it gives me a message "InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file may be missing, or the file may be open in another application." (which it is not) I've downloaded the update, but still no luck. Any ideas?

Are you sure it's an InDesign file? How did you get the file?

Seems to be ok especially if you enlarge the object before you copy it into photoshop.
I think what you are pasting (never bothered to try this) is just the screen preview, hence the need to enlarge. Why would you waste your time doing that instead of exporting to a high-res PDF?

  • Indesign CS4 "forgets" file name when saving as Postcript file.

Like the title says Indesign CS4 "forgets" file name when saving as Postcript file.
    Example:
I open up indesign CS4 and open up a file called "test5". Then I go to the print menu and save it as a postscript file. Once the save as dialog box comes up it wont say "test5" but it uses whatever file name I used last time I created a PDF.
I want indesign to recognize that when I create a postscript file that I want it to be named the same way as my file that is open at that moment. Changing the file name every time is not bad when they are called "test5" etc but here at this company we use super long file names and it's a pain to change it every time.
Funny thing: Some machines here do it the way in the example but other machines will do it the correct way by using the same name in the save as box.
Any suggestions on how to fix this? If something is not clear just ask!

How about this - it's a workaround, I can't change ID or your system.
I'm big on EXACT filenames also, case and space sensative. Do a "Save As" before printing - the file name should be correct and highlighted, ctrl+c copy, escape/cancel the Save As. Paste in the filename during the Save as Postscript File.

  • Problems opening InDesign CS4 files in CS5

We have just upgraded to CS5 to take advantage of the tracked changes facility, and immediately encountered problems:
when opening CS4 files in CS5, we've noticed that formulae, created using charater styles, are not displaying properly.  For example x = y / z, which would have the x and = signs dropped, the y underlined and the z on the next line, something like this (although much prettier than I can reproduce here):
    x = y
          z
in CS5, however, all gyphs in the formula are superimposed upon each other
we tried loading the character styles from our template document.  However, that caused most of the content to dissapear!
we tried converting our template to CS5 and then loading the character styles from our template document.  However, that also caused most of the content to dissapear!
    Anybody got any clues?

If you are opening the CS4 files directly in CS5, try exporting CS4 files to IDML and opening the IDML files in CS5. It's worth a try if you haven't already found it doesn't help.
