Saving a file as TIFF vs. PDF?

I am using Photoshop Elements 9. I do not want to compress a file when I save it and it seems that both files will do the job. Are there other advantages/disadvantages in using one format or the other?
Thanks.
Richard

Hi Richard
Tiff will give the biggest and widest tonal range for editing, making it the preferred format of Macintosh owners. Adobe probably acquired the rights from
Aldus to further the digital negative (DNG) format.
When it comes to 16 bit processing the tiff is second only to raw and essential for pixel editing. The only downside is the huge tiff file sizes, although storage is now cheap.

  • Tracking placed files (jpeg,tiff,word,PDF,excel)

It was recommended to ask this here vs bridge - not much luck in bridge. The situation: i have multiple sources sending a variety of files (jpeg, tiff, word,PDF,and excel). As the book is designed many of them will be placed. As long as the sources update with the same name im good. However, they will inevitably send me batches of files containing new files - how can I track what has been placed and what hasn't. I will have multiple folders to organize the chaos. One thing bridge helped with: keyword. I can quite easily assign a placed keyword in bridge, filter using that word and im done. Except for word and excel - metadata doesn't take. Someone explained this to me.
The sources are out of country, so i have to track this. Bridge takes care of 90%. Perhaps someone has dealt with this. Again, if someone adds a new photo without calling it out, keyword work. Its the Microsoft documents that get tricky. In advance, i appreciate our time.

  • Why is one TIFF pixelated when saving .pages file as .doc?

Hi, when I save my Pages file as Word '.doc' format (using the standard 'save copy as' method, OR exporting as .doc) one of the high resolution TIFFs in the file always shows up pixelated, the other is sharp.
Do you know why one TIFF would be pixelated, and how to get them both showing sharp after saving the file as a Word .doc?
Both TIFFs are 300dpi CMYK, but are different sizes (the sharp one is smaller).
    Thanks!

when I save my Pages file as Word '.doc' format (using the standard 'save copy as' method, OR exporting as .doc) one of the high resolution TIFFs in the file ... Both TIFFs are 300dpi CMYK, but are different sizes
The thing is that .DOC is the file format for versions of Microsoft Word which were developed to work with the Windows GDI Graphics Device Interface, the counterpart of QuickDraw in Mac OS 9.2 and lower.
Neither GDI nor QuickDraw are capable of colourant formats other than RGB. There are tried and true ways around this in prepress,
    1. do not pick TIFF, JPEG, PICT or BMP file formats that are processed by GDI and QuickDraw, but pick a file format that is not processed by GDI and QuickDraw (EPS, PDF).
    2. pick a colour managed path through GDI and QuickDraw so that CMYK tagged with a source ICC colour space is converted into some form of colour managed RGB which in turn can be converted back into some form of colour managed CMYK for whatever printing condition is to be chosen (whether by a third party driver installed in the OS or by other means).
There are other possibilities, as Peter mentioned, but transparency isn't supported in GDI and DOC any more than CMYK is supported. And to go back to the beginning, why in the world are you trying to work in CMYK when you in all likelihood have no knowledge of the ink limit, graybalance and paper for the intended printing condition? You should be working in ICC colour managed RGB.

  • Gif or tiff files recommended for a PDF for publication?

    Hello,
I recently lost all the source files (InDesign of course) for a PDF that I created, but I still have the PDF itself. I bought some software (recosoft) that allows
me to open the PDF in InDesign, but I am given the choice of opening the images in the PDF as either gif or tiff files. Since the PDF needs to be edited more and will eventually be sent out to for publication, can anyone tell me which would be better, to have the images converted into gif or tiff? There are hundreds of images and they are integral to the (black and white) book.
    Thanks in advance!
    James

Properly speaking, the question is underspecified.
GIF is a file format that supports 8-bit color and no dpi specification, and is generally assumed to be 72dpi but the user can always indicate the image should be scaled appropriately, and supports limited transparency. It uses lossless compression, which means it is a very good file format indeed when compared to JPEG, if you are dealing with line art, text, or hard edges.
TIFF is a container file format. It has hundreds of different options (which is to say, millions of combinations of options), can be compressed lossily or losslessly (but is usually lossless), and supports a wide array of bit depths and color spaces, as well as metainformation including the resolution/dpi. It's easy to produce TIFF files with options that are wrong for any particular purpose.
Most of the time, if you are forced to choose between GIF and TIFF, you should choose TIFF. But if your images meet GIF's somewhat narrow constraints, you are probably better off choosing GIF. Certainly with GIF you know what you're getting. A lot depends on what the software is actually doing, which can be unknowable.
(A more common and frequently confused dilemma is JPEG versus GIF, and many people mistakenly choose JPEG when the image is not suitable for JPEG compression, and this can be a horrible horrible mistake that continues to make me feel sick every time I see the results, which is all-too-frequently.)
In this case, though, one has to wonder what the software developers were thinking. I'm not familiar with recosoft, but PDFs store images in only a small number of ways. They can be compressed lossily with JPEG compression, and they can be stored losslessly with a few other choices (the specifics of which don't matter too much because they are lossless!) like Flate (aka Zip), CCITT/Fax, LZW, and no compression at all.
When you're extracting an image from a PDF, what should be important is that you don't transcode the image through a lossy compression step. That is, if it was saved in the PDF with JPEG compression, you want to extract it with JPEG compression. If it was saved in the PDF without JPEG compression, you want to extract it without JPEG compression. Any time you change lossy compresson formats, you introduce artifacts, which are usually undesirable. There's no way to tell from looking at the PDF what non-lossy format the image originally was (e.g. to distinguish a PNG from GIF), but JPEGs are clearly identifable.
I usually use the free command-line tool pdfimages to extract images from PDFs, using the -j option to preserve JPEG compression where appropriate. pdfimages is part of xpdf. You can also do it with Acrobat Professional, though offhand I forget if it has a setting that is smart enough to extract JPEGs automatically where appropriate.

  • When saving photoshop file in PDF, my document changes, how do I solve this?

    Hello everybody,
Im trying to save my CS6 files as PDF documents. When I save my files as PDF some texts or images disappear or deform.
Is there anything i'm doing wrong?
Is there a setting I need to change for saving my files so they don't change?
    Thank you for your help!

    Hi,
Which operating system and version of photoshop cs6 are you using?
You can find out the exact photoshop cs6 version by going to Help>System Info from within photoshop and looking at the very first line that says Photoshop Version.

  • I get the following error when trying to open a pdf file... '*pdf.part could not be saved, because the source file could not be read"

I get the following error when trying to open a pdf file... '*pdf.part could not be saved, because the source file could not be read". I am able to open pdf files in IE and other programs.

I am encountering the same problem -- though with .qfx files from my bank. This worked fine in Firefox 31 ESR, but since upgrading to Firefox 33.0, I get the "<name>.qfx.part could not be saved, because the source file could not be read" when I attempt to download. (I should add that downloading PDF statements from the same site works fine, and that the qfx downloads work fine in IE and Chrome.)
I tried safe mode, it is still broken. Tried v34 beta, no luck. I reverted to version 31, it works again.
I guess I will stick with the older version until a solution is found...or just use an alternate browser to download my financial data.

  • My goal: "convert into pdf" -- the file is instantly saved with the same name as pdf. feasible?

    Good evening dear experts,
i use Adobe Acrobat 9 pro extend to convert word, ppt, jepgs etc. into pdfs.
    No if i
    1) convert a ppt into a pdf: it asks --> "save as" --> converts --> opens the file
    2) convert a jpeg into a pdf: it instantly --> opens the file as pdf --> i need to save it manual under "save as"
In both cases i want to
my goal: "convert into pdf" --> the file is instantly saved with the same name as pdf
WITHOUT asking me "save as" + "opening of the file".
Is the possible, and if yes, HOW ?
A fast answer is very very much appreciated, for i have to convert hundreds of files tonight in order to get it into 1 pdf
    Thx and greetings from Germany,
    Julia

    We are nearly there!
A] - righclick "convert-to-method": @Bill: thx again, your approach worked for ppt, doc-files etc.
    2 problems:
    1) exception: for jpegs/bmps it doesn't work (the file is still opened after conversion, strange).
    2) the output-folder. it only accepts the standard "output-folder documents/*.pdf" (which is a step further but not my end-goal). If i choose another output-folder via "browse", this setting is NOT SAVED (even after clicking on "accept" + "ok").
my goal: the the file should be automatically saved in THE SAME folder the original file is in (seems that can't be achieved and the standard folder is the only thing where to convert in?).
Personal background for understanding: i have many folders with several ppts in it. Once i send it out to a customer, i always have to convert it into a pdf. thats why i want to save time (i know that i can convert it directly + send per mail, but i want an up-to-date copy of the pdf in the folder as well).
    B] - "the automated solution"- @Sandeep:
i just watched your link http://tv.adobe.com/watch/acrobat-tips-and-tricks/automating-tasks-in-acrobat/
about batch processing and i think its really helpful if i want to convert ALL of the files in one folder.
1 question regarding this: are the subfolders also affected?
As i understood from the video, i choose 1 "watched folder" and a "destination folder" (can be the same). E.g i have 1 big folder "designs" with many subfolders. I create a batch converting ppts to pdf to "the same folder" Once i run my batch, it converts ppts in the chosen folder "designs" + all subfolders into the same folder, right?
If this is the case, i get too many pdfs, for i only need the latest ppt-version to be converted (copies of old ppts are also in the files) ;(.
Do you have an idea how can i solve this?
Now we are very near to the end-solution of my goal:
i need this option "to the same folder" in my general settings when i convert a file via right-click. ATM it only works with the standard-folder documents/*.pdf
In A], my files are now instantly saved with the same name in 1 specific folder. I would be completely happy, if this folder would be alwys the same as the one with the original file (and not 1 specific folder)
2nd problem with a]: it does not apply to picture files (bmp, jpegs..)
So if we could solve this, i would be a completely happy girl
Guys, you are great, thx again for the whole struggle with my concerns!!

  • Saving a file as PDF from CC Illustrator

Just updated from CS3 to CC Illustrator. In the old CS3 if I saved a file as a PDF. Adobe acrobat would open and I would then see the file on the screen as a PDF. Now in CC the file just save as a PDF in illustrator and doesn't reopen so I can see the document large and clear with the trim marks and bleeds. Is there a setting I need to change?
Thanks in advance. Self trained illustrator user here with little experience:) Any help is appreciated.

In the PDF Save Options (second dialog), make sure this box is checked.

I deleted emails from my windows emails and when I went into my pictures there was all my recently deleted items as pdf adobe files and I cannot right click and delete. But why would my deleted emails be going to my pictures in the first place. So i think it must be in how the adobe program is set up and need to know how to change the settings so my deleted emails are not sent to my pictures.I do not know what other details you would require?

  • Saving image files - TIFF file extension wasn't acceptable

    Hello!
When I save an image on my iMac the default situation appears to be that the file has a TIFF file extension.
Please review the post I recently made here:     http://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/why-are-tagged-image-file-format-tiff-fil es-unacceptable-here.370185/#post-2426799
I should be grateful if someone can shed some light on my conundrum/confusion.  It should be self-explanatory!
Any help will be gratefully received!

Hello again   So sorry for the delay in replying to folk for the helpful responses.
If one re-visits my original link one can view a response - in essence, look here:-   https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090125135844AAwqjkB
After some reflection, I decided to do nothing at all!  However, today I looked under 'Grab' preferences and found that there is no way to change the image format of a screen capture. BUT ..... I then looked under 'Grab Help' and found this ....
Save screenshots:  After taking a screenshot, choose File > Save, enter a name, add a tag (optional), then choose a folder. Screenshots are saved as TIFF files.
Convert a screenshot to another format:  Open your screenshot in the Preview app. Choose File > Export, click the Format pop-up menu and choose a format, then click Save. For more information, see Convert graphics file types.
So I now know what to do if/when I need to switch to another format!
Many thanks to rkaufmann87  and Frank Miller2 - your guidance is much appreciated,
    David B.

  • Saving files in tiff

Help please. I am having issues with elements 7. When i save a flattened, layered file in tiff, the resulting image shows areas missing, complete layers.
however, when i save the same file in jpg, or even bmp, the image shows complete. this does not happen in my previous version 4.
    what the heck?? any suggestions?

Yes, i am saving the file in elements edit.
i opened these files, that are missing visible layers, in elements 4 also, then resaved, in tiff, the same thing happens, the sky part of the image is missing. The whole image shows when saved in bmp.
    thank you for asking vk.

  • When saving files from the internet, why doesn't Firefox 'know' to put .jpg files in "Photos" and pdf files in "Documents"?

When saving files from the internet, why doesn't Firefox 'know' to put .jpg files in "Photos" and pdf files in "Documents"? IE always saved photos in the "Photos" file and documents in the "Documents" file. Firefox makes me choose every time. Very annoying.

How about if Firefox is programmed like IE in this ONE thing...
When saving files from internet sources, if the file ends in a typical photo extension such as .jpg, .bmp, .tif etc. it defaults to save it in your PHOTOS folder.
When saving anything like a .doc, .pdf etc. it defaults to save it to your DOCUMENTS.
You could still change it to 'desktop' if that if really where you want all your photos and documents... or some other folder that you decide, but DEFAULTS to the LOGICAL folder.
I have carpal tunnel SO bad that even typing this suggestion is painful and having to make the extra click along with moving the mouse EVERY time I want to save something is painful.
ALSO, I shouldn't need a bunch of ADDONS to accomplish this. I tried downloading one and it did nothing. The problem still exists.
