Saving a file in CS4 makes 2 copies?

I am working on a job with hundreds of charts that need to be updated. When I try to save my changes, I get a window (see first pic)
which says a file already exists in that location, do I want to replace it. If I say yes, it saves it, and a copy of it (see second pic).
This is getting confusing and I don't know how to make it stop... Can't find anything in preferences for Illustrator or in my system preferences. This is only happening in Illustrator, not Photoshop or other CS4 programs.

Uncheck "Use Artboards" in Save-Dialog. I assume, that there's only one artboard in your file and therefore you don't need the option

  • Saving eps files always saves 2 copies?

Any idea why when I save as an eps file that I get 2 copies of the exact same file? file names appear as: sample_file.eps and then sample_file01.eps in the same destination folder.
Any help would be appreciated as it is a pain to always have to go and delete that extra file. This happens whenever I start a new file or open a customers supplied art file I can't figure out why it is happening, never use to do this.

    slickster,
You are probably saving the file with Artboards checked. You may try unchecking that option.

  • Saving EPS Files in CS4 without the artboard

I am having an issue placing eps files using CS4.
If you save an EPS file in Illustrator CS4, the resulting file retains the entire artboard... So when you place the file in Photoshop, the graphic is too small.  If I open this eps and simply resave it as a Illustrator CS3 EPS, it places correctly... Meaning the artboard in not included so the graphic is as large as the photoshop canvas.
There has to be a reason for this change and some way to force CS4 to save the eps files like it does for CS3, but I can't find where... Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks!

  • Opening duplicate copies of the same File in CS4

    Hi
I have recently upgraded some of my customers from CS3 to CS4 and I have noticed that when I open a document that was last opened in CS3 i can open the file more than once and they get listed as tabs. If i make changes to the the first open document and save it, the changes do not effect the other open copies of the file.
however once i have saved the file in CS4, if i try and open the document again it simple brings up the already open file in Indesign.
Is their any way I can make this the default behaviour for all documents, as a number of my clients have complained that they have accidentally opened the file more than once and they save the document and close it down and when they close the duplicate copies down and click save it overwrites all the work previously done.
    Thanks
    Nick.

I'm not sure what you want to change the default behavior to, but I'm pretty sure there's no way to change it. This is no different than the way previous versions opened old-version files, except that CS4 shows you the multiple, same-named files as tabs instead of as separate windows. If you want ID to behave exactly as it did in previous versions, you can turn off the tabs in preferences (Edit > Preferences > Interface > Open documents as tabs).
Why do you want to open multiple copies of the same file? If you're converting from CS3 to CS4, why not just open the CS3 file and Save As to a new name?
Keep in mind that CS4 H&Js slightly differently than CS3. You can expect to see some minor text re-wrap going from CS3 to CS4 (but not until you start editing a story). It's always a good idea to finish CS3 jobs in CS3, start new jobs in CS4.

  • Weird CS4 error when saving eps files on a Mac: "...specified files already exist in the target location"

    Hi There,
All 3 workstations in our studio are experiencing weird file behavior when re-saving eps files from Illustrator.
Basically Illustrator creates a new file in addition to the original and adds a "-01.eps" onto the file name. If you re-save your original, Illustrator brings up a dialogue box that states:
Some of the specified files already exist in the target location. The files marked below will be replaced:
    filename.eps
    filename-01.eps
We've been deleting the "-01.eps" files each time but it's becoming tedious. The behaviour occurs when re-saving an eps file to a server or the desktop.
All machines are new Quad-core MacPros running:
    - Leopard 10.5.8
    - Illustrator CS4 14.0.0
We've checked for Illustrator updates from within Illustrator but we seem to be running the latest version.
Is anyone else experiencing this behavior?
Any help or pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated.
    Cheers
    Ben

    Thanks for the reply.
The error occurs when we save the document but if we choose save as, "Use Artboards" seems to be unchecked so not sure if this issue is related or not. Will re-save the document using save as then see if the issue persists.
Why do we still use eps?
Basically because we've found it to be much more compatible. Our entire logo library is in eps format (18 years worth) partly because it was previously the only format to use and partly because it allows account managers to send logos to clients, printers, TV stations etc and not involve the studio (saving out an eps version).
Although "Create PDF compatible file" is a good idea, we've encountered costly issues with colours and images - especially if the recipient is using old CS software, non-Adobe software or is using some kind of hardware RIP. We now just go with what we know works.
But I do find saving eps versions of everything to be a bit painful. In fact, I've always found Illustrator in general to be a bit painful when compared with Photoshop or AfterEffects. Illustrator seems like it's been developed by a different company some times!
Cheers, and thanks for the help.

  • This is an error from my HP scanner. How can I fix the problem? An error has occurred saving the file because it could not be written to. Check the properties for the file to make sure it is not read-only.

This is the error message I received: An  error has occurred saving the file because it could not be written to.   Check the properties for the file to make sure it is not read-only. This worked for me:
"Although it is not a 'fix' for the HP issue, I did find a workaround that helped me. In the Preferences Panel in MacOS X you can pull up the Printer/Scanner preferences and scan directly from OS X. I'd not known of this prior to posting here and it worked like a charm."
"Of course, HP should still update their software, but it's good to know that Apple has it covered for them."

  • Saving file as cs4 from cs5 in Illustrator

I'm super-frustrated. I just upgraded to CS5 and now no one can read my files when I send them to them. Worse, I can't figure out how to save it as a legacy version of Illustrator (preferably CS4). I've done it before under the saveas dialog, but I don't see it there. I read in another forum to look under the Illustrator Options dialog, but I can't find THAT anywhere either. I'm on a Mac.
    Please help!!!

I'm having an issue with legacy formats as well, but it's slightly different.  Figured I would post it in here rather than starting a new thread for it.
I have 5 files, each with multiple layers, that were created in Illustrator CS5.  The printer who I'm sending the files to is still working in Illustrator CS3, so I saved them to the CS3 legacy format, and sent him the files.  He replied and said that he wasn't able to open them.  So I tried to open them up in CS4 (which I still have installed on my machine alongside CS5), and I receive this error message on each of the files:
Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be?  If I save the files in CS4 format and open them in CS4, I am able to open the files, but for some reason they lose their layers.  Both problems are very frustrating, as I don't want to have to save my files as CS4 format, re-open them in CS4, rebuild the layers, and then save them as CS3 out of CS4.

  • CS4 saved .tif files cannot be read by other programs

    I recently upgraded Photoshop from CS2 to CS4 (11.0.1).
If I use CS4 to save a large multi-layered Photoshop .psd file as .tif (Layer/Flatten image/Discard hidden layers),  (File/Save as .tif, LZW, Interleaved, IBM PC) the resultant .tif file cannot be read by many other programs.
File viewers (Faststone, MS Paint, QT Picture Viewer, Windows Photo Gallery) either fail to display the images, display the images incorrectly, or display a black screen.
Neat Image fails to open the files due to incorrect bit depth.
(Faststone shows the bit depth as 40 bits).
PTLens fails to open the files with the dialog "Only RBG images are supported".
This has become a significant problem, since I routinely distribute images to others as .tif files.
Similar Photoshop CS2 saved .tif files open with all the above viewers/programs with no problems. (no longer have CS2 installed)
    Any workaround???
    Thanks

What color mode is the image?
      RGB color
    What bit depth?
      8 bits/channel
    Does the image include transparency?
      no
Does the image have any alpha channels?
      no
How large is the file on disk? (most apps won't read files over 2 Gig)
      165MB

  • Saving from CC to CS4 file changes paths to group of anchors around the brush defination

    Hi,
I use CC but I'm currently doing a job that required me to save any ai files as CS4. I am using the charcoal brush definition however when I save the files cs4 and then reload them the path/lines are turned into a shape with multiple anchor point. Is there anyway to stop this?
    Cheers
    Phil

Ive just worked it out, although I was using the same named brush effect in CC it must be different to the CS4 version as ive just used the brush effect that come with the supporting files and it now works. Sorry to have wasted your time.

  • CS5 save as CS4 makes Large File and sees virtual memory issue

Two CS5 flash files. FileSource 27Mb  File Destination 21.8Mb
They open in 80 seconds for each.
FileSource has 15 MovieClips, 5 show areas of the map in a variety of colours, shape intensive one could say ! These are made into one movie clip and copy pasted to the FileDestination. In CS5 it then crashes.
I turned these instead into CS4 files, they open in 10 seconds ! WOW !!!  I needed to adjust the text which had become two lines from one though.
I try again for the CopyPaste of the movie Clip from library to library, this time I get a message Flash is out of  memory. To increase virtual memory, quit Flash and allocate more virtual memory in the Systems Properties dialog box.
    In there I see
    Initial   2046Mb
    Max size 4092Mb
    Recommended 4605Mb
    I alter this to:
    Initial  3800Mb
    Max    4600Mb
Reboot PC (Win XP SP2 wih 4Gb ram, purpose built video editing suite) and try again, but again get the memory message. Such a powerful PC should handle Flash. PC at work also crashing with CS5.
I thought I was winning with the quick handling of the files in CS4 but File size is now alarmingly FileSource  76.1Mb  and FileDestination 58.4Mb   WHY ? and why does it open them so quick but fall over on the copy paste ?
CS4 opens these in 8 not 80 secs, but that save as CS4 has bloated their file size, quick to open but causing virtual memory failure.
    I am defeated
Does CS5 have some way of keeping size down ? I can’t use CS5 as it crashes when pasting the MovieClip from the source file to destination.
Can I get Flash to simplify the layers perhaps ? There are many shapes of the same colour which perhaps could be fused into one, lessening the number of vector edges. How is that done ? I am making an swf file for a clients powerpoint slide show.

Possible good news. I've been away and hadn't opened DW since also having had a problem with Finder and external drives on my return. When I opened it today, and needed to do a 'Save As' , it did it with no problem of rendering. Though there have been no DW updates, there was updates to PS and ID. So I'll tentatively say the problem has gone away - hopefully for good.
Just editing this post. I happened to turn  Live View on etc.. for the first time in a couple of weeks due to the  above. I realsied this morning I hadn't turned it on. Now it is just as  before when I try to 'Save As' - blank, an then have to close and reopen  for it to render (even though the Live View/Live Code is now stiched  off).
No I don't know how to turn this thread back into an 'Unanswered' question.

  • Saving a file marks it for re-compilation

    Hello,
the following scenario: In CVI2013, open a project, edit the source code, build and run the project, and then quit the executable such that you're back in the IDE. Click the green triangle again and the executable will be run 'immediately'. Now, save the file and press the green triangle again - CVI starts compiling and building the project...
I don't think that this should be necessary, leaving some room for improvement
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi Wolfgang,
This is an interesting scenario. Unfortunately, I don't think it's possible to avoid this recompile in 2013, without other undesirable side effects.
In CVI 2012 and earlier, CVI always compiled files from memory. So, when you saved the file after building and running, that did not trigger the need to recompile after the save.
In CVI 2013, all compilation needs to be done from disk instead. You can still compile files without saving them first only because CVI makes a temporary copy of those files (you can see these copies in the UnsavedChanges folder under the project's configuration folder).
The reason the recompile happens after the save is because when you save the file after running, the timestamp of the saved file is later than the timestamp of the object file that was created from the temporary copy from UnsavedChanges.
To avoid this problem, when you save the file CVI could instead copy the temporary file from the UnsavedChanges to its regular location, if and only if you save it without making any additional changes. The problem, however, is that the timestamp of the regular file would be older than the time when the user explicitly chose to save the file, and I don't think that it's a good idea to have this discrepancy.
If you'd like to work around this issue, you could choose to copy the file yourself from the UnsavedChanges folder, instead of saving it (and then discard the changes in the editor). You could even use some script that you add to the Tools menu, to make it faster. But you'd have to be very careful to only do this when you know that you have not made any new changes to the file.
