Saving a freeze frame as a jpeg?

I've done this in the past when I was on FCP3, now I've upgrade to 6 and it's a little different. All of my options are OfflineRT HD, NTSC and PAL. It says Photo JPEG but just saves it as a .mov. How do do this?

Use Export as Quictime Conversion and select still image. You can set the prefence for JPEG

Either load the clip you want to get the freeze frame from in the viewer, or if the freeze frame will come from a sequence, load the sequence in the canvas.
Scrub to the frame you wish to freeze, and park the scrubber there.
Mark an in-point and an out-point on that frame (type the "I" key and the "O"key).
Once the frame has been marked with both an in and out point, go to the menu File > Export > Using QuickTime Conversion . . .
When the Export Save pane opens, choose Format: Sitll Image, and click on the option button to choose the file format.
Navigate to where you want to store the still, name it, and click Save.
This works for pulling single still frames, one at a time.
If you want to pull multiple still frames - say you need to get 30 selected stills from a clip - there is a different way to do that.

I hope you're not assuming you have to make a freeze frame first, and then make a still-- it's not necessary.
Park the playhead on the frame you want to export, then File>export>quicktime conversion>still image>pick your flavor. I like Tiffs or psd's for photoshop.
Select those frames carefully-- try to have as little motion as possible in the frame so you don't have to de-interlace in photoshop. you lose half the vertical resolution when you do that.

command-shift-3 will create a .png file on your desktop of your screen. You can also do command-shift 4 and crop the image.

And if you want to use the freeze frame in other apps, like Photoshop, place the Timeline playhead on the frame you want, then go to File->Export->Using QuickTime Conversion. In the export window, use the drop-down FORMAT menu near the bottom left of the window and choose Still Image. In the Options drop-drown menu, choose the still image file type you want (JPG, PNG, TIF, etc).

I've torn out half my hair trying to answer the same question. I think I have an answer and it had nothing to do with the many hours I've spent in Adobe's help and Forum to get an answer. I had to figure it out myself.
Here it is: Because CS4 handles HD video, they don't export straight to JPEG. They export to TIFF which is higher resolution than JPEG. That's my guess, anyway. To export a frame grab, go to FILE>EXPORT>MEDIA. On the top right side of the window in the Format box, click the down arrow to open the list and select TIFF. Click Okay.
Another box will open up. This is the Adobe Media Encoder window. Yeah it's new to me too.
The file you are trying to export should show up in the box with all it's wonderful detail including where you want it to go. If you want to change the name of the exported frame, click on the 'Output File' portion of the detail and a 'Save As' window will pop up and you can rename the file. Otherwise, CS4 will give it a generic name for you and you'll have to go find it.
When you get done click 'Okay' and it takes you back to the Media Encoder window. From there click on 'Start Que' and the file gets saved. Click on the upper right X and the Media Encoder window closes. There is no 'Done' or 'Close' button that I can find.
Somehow I got my file to save as a JPEG the first time but I'm unable to duplicate my steps now, so just know that it can be done and be willing to experiment a little from here. If you click on Add, it offers the JPEG format but it's trying to OPEN a file instead of SAVE. I'll have to keep working on that part.
I hope this helps. These turkeys at Adobe should hire me as a troubleshooter and manual writer - I spend a lot of time trying to figure out things they don't document in the manual or help files. As for the Forum - they can stuff that, it's useless. This should be an exquisitely simple task - we all do frame grabs. But they've made it into a monstrous chore.

How do I move a freeze frame from iMovie 11 as a photo into iPhoto?

In prior versions of iMovie, I could isolate a freeze frame or still from the movie clip and then move it somewhere and it would become a regular photo to be manipulated in iPhoto. How do I do that in iMovie 11?

First, get an app called MPEG Streamclip, which is free. (google MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5)
Open MPEG Streamclip.
In iMovie, select the clip you need. Then, right-click/Reveal in Finder.
Drag this clip into MPEG Streamclip
In MPEG Streamclip, move the playhead to the frame you want.
In MPEG Streamclip, click FILE/EXPORT FRAME.
Choose JPEG, TIFF, or PNG and give it a name.
You can then drag this photo into iPhoto.

Help Needed on Freeze Frame Pic

I have a clip of video I freezed framed. Now I want to place a real fish pic on top on left corner of freeze frame pic. How do I do this? It is for a background Image I want to use on a website. Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Freeze Frame as Cutaway

Is there a way to add a freeze frame as a cutaway? I thought I'd done this once before, but maybe that was with iMovie 6.

this is really an interesting riddle:
when you hold the alt-key BEFORE grabbing the freeze-clip, you are allowed to add that freeze as a cutaway.... BUT: when inserted it is plain black!
having a look in the inside of the project, the 'bin' where all stills-as-video are collected, the Still-Images.mov, contains that freeze! it is encoded as any other freeze or still to photo-jpeg.. no diff. to ther files.. but on playback - black!
Update: it's getting even more weird.. when you 'rearrange' that 'Still Images'.mov (I have 3 stills in my project, I changed 1,2,3 to 3,1,2), the stills swap places.. but the one with the 'black' stays black.. looks like, that position in the timeline is doomed!..

Freeze Frame Exports Muddy

I like to freeze a frame and use it as the menu background on wedding videos. Here's how I create it:
Select frame,
Create freeze frame,
Export frame as still picture/jpeg,
De-interlace in Photoshop
Yet when the picture goes into DVD Studio Pro it's somewhat muddy and far from crystal clear, and even worse looking on a large screen tv.
Is there a better way to get a sharper still exported?

This won't help with a muddy image, but you can leave one step out from your workflow - skip the "Create freeze frame" step and go straight to File->Export->Using QuickTime Conversion then choose the file type and format you want.
The Create Freeze Frame step (Shift n) is for when the still image is just for use within FCP.

Freeze Frame Jittery in DVD

I did a freeze-frame on the last frame of a video segment. I saved the frame as the default .bmp format. I then made it 7 seconds in length with a fade-out.
My problem is that when burned to a DVD, instead of being solid, the freeze frame jitters badly.
It seems smooth in PRE (v7). It seems smooth when I play the exported .AVI in Windows Media Player (although it looks all interlace-y). I was going to try "Frame Blend", which fixes some jitters on time-stretched video, but that option is grayed out for stills.
Is there something I can do to prevent the jitter? It really ruins the effect I was going for!

Well, good news! I got it working. My freeze frame is now rock-solid!!
I did the Flicker Removal - that's a good tip to know. It's now on my "cheat sheet".
One odd thing I noticed was when I opened the "freeze frame" .BMP that PRE had generated, the .BMP itself had interlace lines in it! Obviously I didn't want that, so I did the freeze frame again. But this time, the exported .BMP was fine (no interlace lines).
I don't think I did anything differently. About the only thing I can think of is that currently the clip is Time Stretched and Frame > Blended. Maybe when I did the original freeze frame (that gave me an interlaced .BMP) it was either not Time Stretched and/or not Frame > Blended?

Audio Artefacts / Freeze Frames post-Onlining?

Hi all,
Am experiencing some issues with my captured clips in FCP... might not be an FCP or hardware problem, but would like some advice.
1) Recently, I've noticed that audio artefacts have been appearing in the audio of clips I've captured [DV footage from a DV camera, shot on new Sony MiniDV tapes, through a Firewire 400, sometimes using the same camera that shot the footage, through 'Offline Photo JPEG' and also 'DV25PAL']. There will be the occasional but noticeable 1 or 2 frames of audio distortion, whereas the rest of the audio is perfectly fine.
Incidentally, I've just finished reading 'Optimizing Your Final Cut System' from the Apple Pro series of training books - really useful stuff - and their audio troubleshooting section doesn't help in my situation.
It's not a settings problem - it was shot on 48kHz, 16 bit and captured as such. I've listened to the source tape - it's clean. The sequence is set for 48kHz and 16bit [plus, apart from the very random audio kink, the rest of the audio is fine].
I've tried recapturing the offending clips but the audio distortion will just occur in another section instead. Hmmm...
The only suspicion I have now is that the Firewire cable is wonky. Do you guys have any other suggestions? And if it's a Firewire issue [mine's a regular $10 cable bought from an electronics store] - any tips on picking a reliable Firewire cable?
2) A little question on smooth onlining [Ken Stone's website has done a good job of providing the tips and tricks... but there's just one thing I'm still curious about...] I realized that if I online using the process detailed here: http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/basic_onliningjordan.html , I still face problems with freeze frames that I'd made - the corresponding footage that the freeze frame was taken from wasn't automatically selected and up-rezed by Media Manager.
Apart from going back and capturing the freeze frame footage manually or bringing it out to Photoshop and then bringing it in again, is there anything else I can do when preparing my offline sequence for online?
I'm currently editing with FCP 5.1.1 on a Powerbook G4.

ON the audio issue: are you finding the problem with a single track or do you have multiple audio tracks? I've seen some problems that were eliminated by "mixdown" of audio tracks in a project.
If video is fine and audio is not, the cable is not a good suspect - general data corruption would be in both, I think. It's possibly an RT problem; maybe your system is too slow?
Just some ideas.

Thanks for your replies. Sorry I haven't had time to check back before today. Neither of these approaches seems to work. If I simply left click on the frozen frame and then right click, it gives me a GRAYED OUT option to "Delete and close gap" but because it is GRAYED OUT nothing happens - the feature does not work. I tried to cut the clip just before it and just after it, then group it and delete it and that did not do it either. It only deleted the two tiny clips, but not the frozen frame I really wanted out. This is really driving me crazy. I have gone on and fixed most everything I want to fix in the project, but still want to remove frozen frame. I cannot find out how to simply remove it. When I find the help section to add a "freeze frame" it doesn't seem to tell me how to delete it. The only time I can delete it is if I have not saved the project since I added it. Thanks again for your help. I dont' seem to have any other functionality issues that I am aware of.
