Saving a PDF as a negative image...is that possible?

I'm trying to save a PDF from Illustrator as a negative image...like in the print menu in 'Output' you can change the image to Negative.
I need to do this so I can send it to an image setter.
I looked in the help menu and briefly online but I couldn't find anything, please let me know if you know how I can do this or if it isn't possible!
Thanks!

Well...
Usually we just send an Illustrator file to the image setter and when we print it, we select the image to be negative and that works out fine.
Now we're trying to send an 11"x17" file when the setting is for 8.5"x11". We couldn't find anywhere in the manuals or help menus for the software where to change the page size on the image setter. Then we were finally able to get it to work with sending a 11"x17" PDF, but now we need it to be a negative image..
It's so frustrating!
But thanks for your help!

  • When saving a PDF from a FrameMaker book, is it possible to set document filenames as bookmarks in the PDF?

When saving a PDF from a FrameMaker book, is it possible to set document filenames as bookmarks in the PDF? Currently when I have a Framemaker book that I want to save as a PDF, I choose Save Book As and then choose PDF for the file format. A dialog box comes up in which I can choose the Bookmarks tab and choose which tagged content I want to be made into bookmarks in the PDF file. What if I would rather have the filename of a document rather than the chapter title be a bookmark in the PDF? Is that possible? Where would I choose that option? Thanks!

There are two ways that you could do this. You can either use postscript text frames and enter the correct pdfmark entries to show the file name with the corresponding actions (i.e. where to go in the PDF) or you can use hidden text in FM and the "Filename (Short) " variable in a unique paratag to be picked up by FM's bookmark creation.
To go the pdfmark route, see http://www.pdflib.com/fileadmin/pdflib/pdf/pdfmark_primer.pdf for details and also consult the Adobe Pdfmark Reference manual (http://www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/devnet/acrobat/pdfs/pdfmark_reference.pdf).
The hidden text route would use FM's Color Views to specify a colour as Invisible. This will make the content visually disappear from the screen (and any output), but FM will still be able to read the contents of any text that is coloured with the Invisible colour(s).
    1. Pick or create a colour that you want to be invisible. [Magenta is usually a good bet and stands out visually].
    2. Set that colour to be invisible in View 1 and visible in View 6. [you can use the shortcut <esc> v 1 and <esc> v 6 to toggle between the views.]
    3. Create a paratag to use for the filename and set the font colour to use the invisible colour.
    3. In the title of each chapter file, drop an anchored frame that is set to be outside of the text frame [so it won't interfere with any other content].
    4. In that AFrame, insert a text frame and use the invisible paratag defined in step 3.
    5. Insert the Filename (Short) variable in that text frame.
    6. Repeat steps for all files to be included in the bookmarks.
When creating the PDF bookmarks, select only the paratag used for the invisible colour.
Don't forget to toggle the View to be invisible (i.e. <esc> v 1  - this also works at the book level for all files in the book).

  • Photos in InDesign PDFs appear as negative images

I work in CS3 (I'm on OS 10.4.11) and am having a problem when I export a layout with photos in it to a PDF file. The PDF looks fine on my computer and prints fine to my printer, but when I send it to others, the photos will sometimes (arrgh--not always!) appear on screen and print as negative images. The placed photos are usually TIF or JPG, but are sometimes Photoshop files.
Often I am sending these documents to users who will simply print them out on their own laser printers, so typically I export as "a high-quality print." However, I have had the same problem when I've exported as "press quality." The problem remains the same whether the user is printing to a PS printer or not.
Originally I thought it might be an issue with the Acrobat version on the recipient's end. However, I recently received a PDF from co-worker who has the exact same computer model, OS, and software versions as I do. When I opened her PDF, low and behold, I saw all the photos as negatives. (It did print fine, however.)
    Any idea what's going on?

To export, I select File > Export > Adobe PDF.
Adobe PDF preset: High quality print (usually) or press quality (occasionally)
    Standard: none
    Compatibility: Acrobat 5.0 (PDF 1.4)
Options: Optimize for fast Web view
    Create tagged PDF
    Export visible & printable layers.
Most of my recipients have Adobe Acrobat Pro 7.0 for the PC; however, I had the same trouble opening an InDesign-created PDF from another Mac user with the same versions of everything as me, i.e. CS3, InDesign 5.0.2, and Acrobat Pro 8.1.2.

  • Print negative image (Ultiboard 10.1)

We're changing from positive to negative working prototype PCB production.
I'm trying to produce a negative track image by checking the "Print negative image" in Ultiboard 10.1
It works but the whole page is printed black (way beyond the board boundaries) wasting ink / toner.
I can set up a custom page size to reduce the problem but that's not a staightforward task.
In desperation I tried changing the track/pad colors to white, putting a solid black polygon on a Mechanical layer (the same size as the board outline) and NOT using "Print negative image". That works very well (especially for irregularly shaped boards) except that "Leave Drill Holes Open" then doesn't work; or at least it does but it thinks I still want white holes whereas they should now be black.
    Anyone have any thoughts please?
    Bob

    Hello Bob,
I have tried putting a solid polygon in and lost the holes the same as you describe. I think as you have said, the best option to save ink that works is to set up a custom page size with "Print negative image" on.

  • One page displays as negative image when saving PDF to reduced size in Preview

    Imac Intel Mid 2007
    OS X 10.5.8
    Preview v4.2
I have a multi-page PDF I'm trying to save to a reduced size.
The document was constructed of separate pages, some of which were created as Photoshop PDFs in Photoshop CS4 and others were saved as PDF's from Word.  After moving over the individual PDF's to the side bar, the document saves fine in Preview at full size. When I use the quartz filter to "Save As"  "Reduced File Size" one page saves as a negative image and the others are all fine.
One suggestion I saw in a similar thread was that the mode in PS might be CMYK, however it is not and it is RGB.
Any help as to solving this would be greatly appreciated.

    JPEG is single-page.
If I print and choose 'pdf to jpeg'
    Elaborate, please.
Is there a way to save to pages out in one go to jpeg where I can adjust the dpi setting?
Yes. Build an Automator workflow using the PDFs > Render PDF Pages as Images action.
Once I have the reduced jpegs it's easy enough to reimport into preview and save as a pdf.
If the desired final output is multi-page PDF, no need to go through all that. You can do the task in Acrobat Pro (PDF Optimizer), or in Preview (Save as > PDF > Quartz Filter). If the current Reduce File Size filter doesn't provide satisfactory quality, use ColorSync Utility to duplicate it (or make a new filter from scratch) and adjust it to fit your needs.

  • Illustrator drops a filled path when saving as pdf or exporting as an image

    Hi everyone,
I am running AI CS5 on an i5 iMac with 8GB memory.  I am having an issue where Illustrator is leaving out a filled path upon exporting or saving the AI file as a pdf or bitmap image.  The workaround is to open the AI file in Photoshop, and save it from there, and there are no issues; save that my vector image and text has now been rasterized.
The screenshot below shows my AI file as it exists in Illustrator:
And this is after exporting as bitmap or saving as PDF (opened in Acrobat):
Notice the white fill above the DTP mark; it has been left out.  I tried to import the file into InDesign and export it has a PDF from there, and the same issue happens, which makes me think it is a problem with the native AI file.  I have also copied/pasted the file into another document and the same thing still happens.  Any help that you guys can provide would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you!
    Bill

It was marked for overprint somehow.  Got it!

  • Images Automatically Reduced in Resolution When Saved as PDF

I created images in Photoshop and saved them all at 300 ppi in JPEGs. I inserted the JPEG images into an MS Word  2007 document. I then saved the document as an Acrobat file. In the resulting PDF file, all the images are at about 150 ppi. I have no idea why. Can someone tell me how to produce a pdf in which the images are at the original 300 ppi?
    Thank you. GeePapa

    Hi Eugene
I am using visFixedFormatPDF, visDocExIntentPrint, and visPrintAll, but there is no improvement in the resolution of the PDF.
The Type.Missing value can only be used for the last parameter. The other parameters require either bool or int, so I get compile errors if I try to use Type.Missing.
I also notice the reduction of resolution in Visio 2013 only applies to bitmap images copied into the Visio file. Lines and shapes drawn in Visio still looks fine. I am getting this problem even if I simply select the Save As menu option and select PDF,
so this problem could be independent of office.interop.
Is there something I can do to avoid the degradation of resolution of bitmaps in Visio 2013? Everything is fine in Visio 2010.

  • Have your Illustrator and Photoshop images stopped saving as PDF? Help!

I have CS5. For the past 2 weeks, when I save an Illustrator or Photoshop design as a PDF, it does not create a pdf of the image. It creates a PDF with this message:
"This is an Adobe® Illustrator® File that was saved without PDF Content. To Place or open this in other applications, it should be re-saved from Adobe Illustrator with the "Create PDF Compatible File" option turned on. This option is in the Illustrator Native Format Options dialog box, which appears when saving an Adobe Illustrator  le using the Save As command."
I CANNOT FIGURE OUT HOW TO DO THIS! HELP! The message does not describe any of my CS5 message boxes.
    Thanks for any solutions.

  • Dimmed images are not dimmed after saved as PDF.. please help!

    Hi,
After dimming multiple images in AI, they are dimmed in the program but once i preview the pdf I saved of the .ai file, the images are not dimmed.  What am i missing?
    Thanks!

Dim is an Illustrator  layer options attribute, that does not tranfer over to the .pdf. You will have to either group all in the layer and set transparency to you dim percentage, or draw a white rectangle and fill that with a percentage of white.

  • Images distorting when saving as pdf

    Hi
I am having a problem when exportng a file as a pdf. A jpg image that I am using distorts. This is a high res file and I have tried exporting with both the 'high quality print' and 'press quality' presets.
I have tried printing directly from illustrator and the image looks great, when I print from the pdf the image looks disorted.
I have attached an image to show what I mean, the image on the left is from the pdf.
Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.
    Thanks
    John

To fix the bump here, I would open the image in photoshop, and add a little more canvas to the right side. If you have more time, I would recreate this as a vector object, as this does not look too good in Illustrator.

  • Color Handling when saving Word document as PDF, containing CMYK TIFF image?

What is the proper procedure for creating PDFs from Word documents that contain a CMYK TIFF image? I have created a company logo by exporting an AI file with Pantone colors as a TIFF (with a CMYK color profile, since there is the intention of printing). Since it is a logo, color consistency is important and the utmost priority. I will be needing to insert this file into a Word document that will then be converted into a PDF.
I've read somewhere that Word automatically converts images to RGB, and also have come across potential problems of colors being changed in the final PDF through unmanaged color handling and conversions. I figured instead of running around in circles trying to find the best solution, I'd post on here. Is this procedure possible? What is the best way to do this without changing my original color profile or CMYK values of the logo being used?
This PDF has the intention of being placed online for offices to print/publish.
    Thanks!

Though actually, let's take a step back -- why do you want to use CMYK? Most offices won't be using PostScript printers, so the CMYK will be converted to RGB for printing. For publishing - do you know the required CMYK profile to use for all possible publishing scenarios? Properly tagged RGB is generally considered the way to deal with this in modern workflows not targeted at a specific press. But still probably not with Word!

  • Aperture converts color jpg to negative image - help

I've installed the Aperture 2.0 trial and I'm having some difficulties. This is my first time with Aperture. I have a 24 page PDF of a playbill (from a high school play). In Acrobat Standard I exported the playbill to 24 JPG files. I've viewed the files on a Windows PC in its viewer plus in Adobe Photoshop. All files look great. I then put them on a USB memory drive and imported them into an album in Aperture. The black and white pages look fine. However, three pages are in color or have detailed photographs. These appear converted to some other type of image. Best I can describe is that it looks like a film negative. Why would this be?
Second question? When I import files (accepting all defaults) where are they stored on my hard disk? I wanted to look at them with Leopards Preview but I can't find the actual files...only the thumbnails in Aperture.
    Thanks.

I re-exported the images from Acrobat and saved them at the highest JPG settings. That seemed to work.

  • When saving a pdf the objects on the page appear offset of the page boundries.

This happens mostly in illustrator but it just happened again to me while printing a .ps booklet out of indesign and converting to a pdf using distiller.
    See the image below:
The left shows my InDesign Document. On the right is the pdf that results from the save. As you can see the page boundaries are being completely disregarded when saving the pdf and everything is equally shifted down and to the right.
Here is an example of me having the same problem in illustrator:
As you can see there is sometimes zero correlation between what is on the artboard and what page the objects end up on in the pdf.
This problem also has another strange symptom, it seems to have to do with dragging images from firefox onto an artboard in illustrator. The image is place automatically in the center and all objects in the file move together in one direction. see before and after photos below:
    Before:
    After image dragged in:
You can even continue to drag images in and it will move in the same direction the same amount every time:
    I'm running Adobe CS6 on OSX 10.9.1.
    Thanks in advance!

In so many words: We can't know. You have not provided any details about your exact settings, what version of Acrobat, your placed images, color settings, color profiles and a million other things including perhaps providing your test fioles for inspection by other people. That aside simply ask in teh relevant ID/ AI/ Acro/ PDF forums. This place here is a dead place and only meant for general sales, install and activation questions, not specific workflow questions.
