Saving a raw file as a jpeg

When I save a raw file as a high-quality jpeg, I am losing a lot of information and the image becomes a lot smaller when reopened. How do I prevent this?

The actual size of the file in megabytes cannot be a criteria for quality of the image. JPEG compression will work differently on every image depending on the image contents. Some images will compress a lot more than others. When you say that the JPEG is smaller, Could you share the actual pixel dimensions of the raw and JPEG images. What are you using to create your JPEG files?
Just one other comment. It seems to me that it would be extremely difficult to create a 50 MB JPEG image. It would be absolutely huge in size. I'm guessing that the site you are using is allowing the loading of file formats other than JPEG if they are allowing file sizes that large.

Why does photoshop 12 editor open my Nikon D90 Camera RAW files only as jpegs???

    Hi,
Which operating system are you running on?
What makes you think that the raw files are being opened as JPGs?
Do you shoot RAW+JPG and opening the JPG files bt mistake?
If you are opening a RAW (NEF) file and it doesn't show the Camera Raw screen but goes straight into the editor then it may be that your screen resolution is too low.
    What is your screen resolution?

  • Strange colour spots (red & green) appear after RAW files converted to JPEG, anyone know how to fix it?

Strange colour spots (red&green) appear after RAW files converted to JPEG, anyone know how to fix it? Thanks.

I use "Export" function to convert the picture from RAW format to JPEG format, resolution 240 pixels per inch. Strange red dots appeared in the area supposed to be dark grey, as per the picture below. The red colour does not appeared in the original RAW picture when viewing from Lightroom, only exist in the JPEG it created. Any ideas how to fix this? Thanks!

  • Saving raw file as a jpeg

I recently got a new computer and loaded photosop CS2 and elements4 on it. Unlike my old computer the raw plug in opens in elements it used to open in CS2. This in itself is not a problem however I dont seem to have the option of saving a file as a jpeg as I used to. All it will save it as is a DNG which is useless for what i need. It used to be so simple before. Would appreciate any help or advice but please dont make it too technical as I really am a computer numpty.

Just a shot in the dark, as I don't use either Windows or Elements:
ACR is crippled in Elementsin more ways than one. Try clicking on the Open button, rather than Save, then save in Elements as a JPEG.
You can (and should) change your File Type Associations in Windows so that ACR is hosted by Photoshop instead of Elements.

  • Imported RAW files corrupted but JPEG ok. Will this be ok in my library?

One of three of my SD cards imported about 10% of its RAW files with great chunks missing. I actually saved the folder onto external hard drive before trying to import with LR, and I CAN see quite normal RAW file images using iPhoto, but the same images are still fragmented when I import them directly from the external hard drive.
EXcuse use my ignorance, but can I import the jpeg images using Lightroom's DNG copy option (so that they are more stable); and will I be able to use them, and work on them, just as effectively as with all the successfully downloaded RAW images?
OR do I have to go back to Iceland for these 100 photos?!
    Thanks, Sandoise

looking at images on the camera screen
That does not verify raw data, only embedded jpeg preview, which you already know is OK.
    Sandoise wrote:
I can see both RAW and JPEGS in iPhotos and they look perfectly good.
Well, seeing them in iPhotos does not mean raw data is good - it may also be showing just the embedded jpeg preview, which doesn't count.

Lightroom is the third way I've checked
Lightroom is for sure showing the raw (re-rendered) data, so it's the one to use to judge raw data integrity, as read by OS, from card, through your reader...
    Sandoise wrote:
How else can I check the card?
It's "impossible" to tell whether problem is card or reader, unless you try a few different readers. Try a few different ports and a couple different systems too if you can, to rule out system/port/reader possibilities. If raw data is bad no matter which system, which port, which reader you use - it's bad on the card. You still won't know for sure whether the card is bad or the camera is bad, or something else happened.., but bad card is the most likely..

  • Strange object formed when saving camera-RAW file as TIFF

Perhaps someone has a clue as to what the strange circular object  seen on the picture below might be (on the upper-left area of the  photo), because I have no idea.
My best, yet  uninformed, guess is that this is an electronic random generation of  single-value white and gray pixels within my Photoshop CS3 program.
This is how the "circular object" came into existence:
    -  With a Canon 5D camera on tripod I shot this night view of San  Francisco's Union Square Macy's store.  Camera data: 5" @ f/8, ISO 50,  23mm focal length, EF17-40mm f/4L USM lens, 2010-Nov-12, 6:37pm, Max.  RAW size setting.
    - Later on with Photoshop CS3 I saved  the camera-RAW file as a TIFF; straightened converging vertical lines  with Perspective, and selected the entire black-sky area over Macy's  roof; within that selection only, applied a 12x exposure increase to obtain  hidden data from shadows; that's when the black, gray, cyan and blue  pixels right over the roof appeared... as well as the circular object in  question.
    - Later attempts to recreate the circular  object--following the exact same steps of the first RAW-to-TIFF  conversion--render the same black, gray, cyan and blue pixels over Macy's  roof, but NOT the circular object.  The circular object formed only ONCE, during the very first RAW-to-TIFF conversion.  Obviously, all further JPG copies of the original TIFF file do carry the circular object.
    - Have you had  similar "mysterious" Photoshop "creations" in your images?  Do you  have any theories as to what in the world this circular object is?  If  so, please write me at [email protected]
    Thank you,
    Juan

What comes to mind is the Adjustment Brush in Camera Raw.  I just fooled with a dark image and was able to make it show something similar to what you're seeing by clicking the adjustment brush in a dark part.  When I opened the image the circular area was essentially invisible, but it became quite visible upon pushing the Exposure up.  In this case I could not push it up to 12x as you did; only about 5x.

  • IOS 5 Raw files converted to jpeg when imported

Prior to upgrading to iOS 5, when I imported my RAW images from my camera via the camera connection kit, they were not converted, re-sized, or altered.
Since iOS 5, my RAW files are re-sized, EXIF Data stripped, DPI set to 72, and converted to a Jpeg.
How do I stop this from happening?

It appears that I am having a simliar problem with Exif data.  When a photo is cropped in IOS5 it removes the Exif data including the GPS coordinages (this is how I noticed). Perpahs the new OS isn't handeling Exif data correctly. Response from Apple?

  • Saving a PDF file as a JPEG

When a user is trying to save a PDF file as a JPEG, in Adobe 8 Professional, they go to File and Save As it is coming up with the message "Acrobat could not save a page in this document because of the following error: The image is too wide to output. Please crop it to reduce resolution and try again (page 1)." There is a box that says Ignore all occurrences in this document. If I check it, and hit the "Ignore" button, it does not save. The default printer is set for a 48" wide plotter so the fact that it is too wide is not an issue.

I am encountering this same issue.  In my case the file is rather a large one, but I can not seem to make appropriate changes to make it save as a .jpg.  Does anyone have tips or suggestions?
"Acrobat could not save a page in this document because of the following error:
The image is too wide to output.  Please crop it or reduce resolution and try again. (Page 1)"
This is a one-page document, a composite of several images and text that I wish to save as a .jpg and send for a photographic print.
The original file was created in Illustrator; I have since been told that might not be the best place for what I'm doing but at this point I have a lot of hours invested and no desire to restart.
I was unable to export as a .jpg from illustrator, seem to have a very hard time getting the file into indesign, but I have managed to create a .PDF from the illustrator file and now am attempting to work around by bringing the PDF into photoshop.

  • Saving more raw files as jpeg

I have Photoshhop CS3 and Windows XP. I have saved a number of raw photos in Camera Raw as jpegs and have more to save. But now I get dialog box saying there is not enough memory to save. It can't be a hard storage issue as my hard drives are less than half full. What can I do?
    [email protected]

With XP professional I've been getting a similar error report when I try to copy a half gig of files from my hard drive to a 2 gig flash drive (one of those sticks that fits in a USB drive). I'm told after the transfer of a third of the files from the object folder that the command failed. I googled this error message and wound up in the MS knowledge base, which told me to fix the problem by installing Service Pack #3. You may want to try that. However, I did that and I'm still getting the same error message as before. I describe my predicament to show you that you have partners in your frustration. If you find a fix for your problem, please be sure to post an answer here. Thanks.

  • How do I save a RAW file as a JPEG?

I am new to Apple and the picture I just loaded are in RAW.  I just went through and edited them.  How do I save them as JPEG for uploading to Shutterfly?
    Thanks.

Are you asking about saving the photos in iphoto on your MacBook Pro with Retina display?
This is the iPhoto for IOS forum.
In iPhoto on your mac select the photos you want to export, and then use the command "File > Export" from the main menu bar.
Set the "Kind" to "Jpeg" and select a "Jpeg quality" sufficient for the webpage you want to export to.
set the other options as you like them and press "Export".

  • RAW files converted to JPEG files on my mac can't be seen by my customer who has a PC: WHY?

I have been using Adobe CS5 for over a year now but only recently discovered how Adobe Bridge helps with work flow and post processing. My first time using Bridge I put all my RAW NEF files into folders and, after processing them in Photoshop, put all the JPEG files into a seperate folder. Before sending said JPEG images to my client, I batch renamed them to make sure the image file numbers were in the proper consecutive order. My client, who is a PC user, received these images and said she was unable to view them. Her computer system isn't outdated and I'm not sure what the issue is. I'm wondering if there was a formating change that happened when I did the batch rename or if the problem is Adobe Bridge altogether? I did all these on my Mac Book Pro which is only a year old..What am I missing??

Did each image have its .jpg extension? i think Windows likes to see the extension, Macs don't care.

  • Saving edited RAW files in iphoto

Hi I have searched the forum but cant find an answer that works for me and I have also read this
    http://http://barbarabrundage.com/2010/11/29/using-photoshop-elements-9-with-iphoto/
Basically I am opening my Raw images in PSE 10 as my external editor from Iphoto 11. My question is what is the best way to save it back to iphoto?
I have tried the instructions in the above link and set PSE 10 to 'save over current file' in the savings preferences but when I clicked save image after editing in camera raw it opened the save as menu
Should I click on open image from camera raw to open in the editor and then save it from there for it to update in iphoto? I clicked open image for an edit yesterday then saved to desktop as a psd file and imported to  iphoto which worked
Apologies I am very new to this, any help would be great
    Chris

Ok thanks, is there any way to keep the format of the file then and save into iphoto as per the linked article? Would I have to keep it as a NEF file??
Also when I've edited a Raw photo if I am going to save it to desktop and import it back to iphoto what file type should I be saving it as? I used  PSD last time is this right?
One final question when should I be saving files as DNG as this is what the book I am reading refers to but i dont know if these can be saved to iphoto or what their purpose is
    Thanks again

  • Will aperture convert raw files straight to jpegs

at present I'm using professional photo shop to do my raw camera shot files, am thinking of buying aperture to use with my brand new all in one desk top mac, but need to know if it will convert raws straight to jpegs?

While I like and use Aperture for a couple of years now, I would recmmend caution in going there now.  According to other posts on this forum and various
articles on the Web, Aperture is being frozen in a prepare to die status.  Here is a ZDNet article on it.  If you search the web, you can probably find other
articles online.  Apple is saying that Aperture is being replace by the New Photo application announced in June.  There is very little if any information on what
Photo can do for a professional.  Some, including me, are expecting it to be a non-professional offering.  Personally I'm exploring Light Room 5 and Photoshop CC 5 to replace Aperture.
    http://www.zdnet.com/apple-orphans-aperture-imaging-pros-unhappy-7000031047/
Updates to Aperture have been fewer in the last few years except for Camera Raw which is part of OS X itself.
Here is another discussion on the issue which indicates that opinions vary:  Should I buy Aperture in July 2014 even though it's EOLing?

  • Saving a TIFF file as a jpeg in CS3

Recently I have been unable to save tiff and psd files as jpegs. When I select "save as" from the file menue I do not have jpeg as an option in the drop down menue. I have always been able to save files as jpegs until recently.

    Thanks.
How do you determine if your files are 8 bits per channel and how do you change them at the time you save as. I don't think my Canon Rebel xt is capable of higher than 8 bit color.

  • RAW files: View embedded JPEG next to RAW file

I would like the opportunity to view the JPEG thumbnail that is embedded in my Nikon NEF files, so I can see how the camera's adjustments look, and possibly use that while making my own adjustments. I know the embedded JPEG is tiny, but this might still be a useful feature.

Sorry to bring up an old post, but this is exactly my question.
Can I access a camera embedded JPG as a reference. I know I can't use it for the basis of editing but I would like to see it just the same. I know some other tools can do this, but can LR2 show that JPG.
Ideally it would be an X-Y comparison to my current image.
    Thanks,
    Rob.
