Saving alternate edits of a Raw file

I am wondering how best to save several alternate versions of the same Raw file. I'm aware that it's possible to save presets, but these don't seem to be image-specific - ie, all the presets I create are available for every Raw file I open. If I'm going to save a few alternate versions of several Raw files then the settings menu and Presets tab are going to get fairly crowded.
Is there any way of saving image-specific settings so that they only appear in the settings menu when that image is opened? I imagine this depends on whether it's possible to save alternate settings in the same xmp file. If the option isn't available then I'd suggest this as a possible new feature.
At the moment the only option I can see is save different versions of the same file as DNGs, and stack them in Bridge.
Apologies if I'm missing something

There is a way to do this with Camera Raw as well. Open your original raw image and make changes to it. Then, in ACR, use the save button to save a DNG copy that includes all of the changes. The DNG file will contain all of your changes as well as the original raw image data. After you have saved the DNG, either click on the Cancel button to cancel the changes you have made to the original raw image and return to Bridge, or else reset the image and start on your next rendering that you will save to another DNG file.

No. Lightroom 4.x will never be able to open Raw files from the D810.
D810 support has only just been added to the RC version of Camera Raw 8.6. It is never retrospectively added into older versions.

Adobe will probably add D810 support to the next version of Lightroom.
Either way you'll have to upgrade to Lightroom 5 to be able to open D810 Raw files in Lightroom.

  • CS6 misunderstands color in edited CS5 NEF raw files: too purple

This is a problem that Adobe CS6 / Lightroom 4 / Camera Raw 7 have in reading Nikon D50 camera raw NEF files.
Here are other more informative but still unresolved posts:

I got Photoshop CS6 Extended from Creative Cloud.  I got a problem with how CS6 handles the color info from files edited with CS5. I spent time searching the web for answers but am afraid I did not find any.  Please help!
In CS6, my CS5 files look too purple.  (Or you may call it too magenta or too blue.)
How can I get CS6 to correctly understand the color information of raw NEF files previously edited with CS5?
CS6 reads my previously edited NEF (Nikon Raw) files with a purple tint.  The purple shows up in Bridge thumbnails, Bridge Previews, Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw, and Photoshop itself.  If I process the raw (NEF) file with Image Processor, the JPEG produced is still purple. So, CS6 is consistent but not correct!
The appended Apple Preview screenshot shows the difference in the JPEGs made with CS5 and CS6.
    (1) Top Red:  CS5 JPEG from image processor.
    (2) Middle Purple: CS6 JPEG from image processor.  It looks purple in Bridge, Camera Raw, and Photoshop.
    (3) Bottom Red: Nikon Raw file as seen by Apple Preview.
I append an example of what my files look like in CS6 Bridge. Each pair of images should look the same, but CS6 makes the NEF raw images look purple. The left is the raw NEF file and the right is the JPEG that was produced from the raw file. There is no visible difference between NEF and JPEG images in CS5.
The same purple result can also be found in Lightroom 4.

This is a known problem and Adobe employee MadManChan2000 created V3 beta profiles for Nikon D3, D300 and D700. It appears the V3 profiles have not actually made it into a LR release yet, but you can download them and install them into LR to see if they make a difference:

For the most accurate Lightroom camera profiles I can highly recommend the Color Checker Passport by X-Rite. Every camera body's image sensor has its own unique color profile, so any "canned" profile is a compromise at best. The ColorChecker Passport also helps you to more accurately establish and set your White Balance in LR.

  • Is there a way to edit the same RAW file in Aperture 3 and then Photoshop CS5?

I recently got Aperture 3.4.5 and its been great for stream-lining my workflow.  But for certain RAW adjustments, like applying a gradient, I want to use Photoshop CS5's RAW editing window.  I don't seem to be able to export the file as a modified CR2 from Aperture to Photoshop CS5.  Is there a way to do this?
And if exporting a modified CR2 from aperture is not possible, what advice can you give me for applying gradients in aperture, or in combinations with photoshop.  Is there a way to open a JPEG or TIFF in the raw editing window by any chance?
Any and all advice welcome.  Cheers!

Is there a way to open a JPEG or TIFF in the raw editing window by any chance?
If you open Bridge and go into the Camera Raw Preferences, you will see a section at the bottom where you can set preferences for TIFF handling. Setting the option to 'Automatically open all supported TIFFs' will result in any TIFF file sent from Aperture to Photoshop via 'Edit with Photoshop CS5' function being launched in ACR and allow you to work on the TIFF file.
You then have to open the image in Photoshop with the 'Open' button in ACR and save the file (making sure you have the TIFF file extension set when saving). I haven't used this in a while, but I think it may try to save as a '.tif' file which would not be seen by Aperture when you complete the save (and have a '.tif' file sitting in the Masters folder that has no connection).
This is still not the RAW file - obviously - but will allow you to use the ACR tools on the TIFF file generated by Aperture and return it with those edits if saved correctly in PS CS5.

  • Are there tips for editing RW2 (Panasonic RAW) files in Lightroom?

When editing RW2 fiels, I find that the colors are flat and I'm having a hard time recovering details, even when I auto-bracket and combine images with the HDR tool. I think I had better success with JPG images from an older Lumix camera I owned than I am with the RAW files from this camera (Lumix DMC-FZ200).
I also have a Canon DSLR, and LR works beautifully with these RAW images. Not sure why there is the problem with Panasonic's RAW files. Has anyone else had this problem, and is there a way to optimize RW2 files for use in LR?

Lr uses Camera Raw internally for processing raw files.
You create renditions by editing raw images in develop mode until you are satisfied, and then exporting those renditions.
If you mean you want access to proprietary NEF settings placed in the raw image by the camera or Nikon software... this is not possible. You can mimic some of the settings with camera profiles and presets, but Lr (like most software) does not have (complete, unfettered, unencumbered) access to proprietary image details.  Adobe uses the public Nikon SDK to get access to the encrypted WB information.

  • How do I relink edits made to raw files?

I had to reload my aperture library from a back up and now my edits are not showing up. How do I link the edits back to my projects?

    Thanks for the reply.
The edits I am referring to were made in Aperture 3, which included everything from brush work to exposure tweeking and croping.
The back up was made by copying the Aperture library as well as the pictures file located on the Imac hard drive. This was done manually, I did not use any back up software. In my back up I see the original cr2 files as well as an xmp file and a jpg file for each photo. I originally imported cr2s while downloading photos from my flash card into the Aperture Library as a project for editing. I began to have trouble with Aperture being very slow and it was continually "Processing", I was convinced my trouble was corrupt files in the Aperture library. I also had an issue with a project that was too large so I created new projects containing fewer files. Instead of having a project containing all photos from 2011, I created projects for 2011-1, 2011-2, 2011-3 and 2011-4 for the quarters of the year. I then imported the cr2 files by date into the new projects I created. I created a new library and copied my projects from the old library into the new library and that is when I began to have trouble. I have tried to load the xmp files into my Aperture library but it seems not not recognise them.
Because this computer is a family computer I was hoping to reduce the problem of corrupt files by creating my personal Aperture library.
I am new to Aperture and on a very slow learning curve so any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

  • I cannot find my saved text edit documents after interrupting file vault, where did they go?

Was file vault able to back up even though it was interrupted? Where does it go? Can I restore my computer to where it was before I tried using filevault? I think I have backed up my computer with iCloud previously.

    Is FileVault on or off?
Do you have any backups besides what is being backed up to iCloud?

  • I can open RAW files from my camera in photoshop cs5, but they dont save properly after editing

I can open RAW files from my camera in photoshop, but then after I have edited, i save as .raw, and open up the newly saved file and it just comes up as a grey messed up picture.  What am I doing wrong?

I thought that it was preferrable to do editing on RAW files rather than TIFF for highest image quality.
Yes, it is preferable to do as much editing on the raw files as you can including global and local tone & color correction in Camera Raw...but there is a limit to the work you can do and sometimes you must go ahead and render the raw file into Photoshop for additional work. Then you'll be needing layers and other functionality that can't be done on a raw file. At that point you'll need to save as a TIFF or PSD. If you work in 16 bit and a large enough color space, the TIFF or PSDs will still be capable of the highest quality...as others have indicated, the Photoshop .raw file format ain't for photography per se.

  • How can I REPLACE original RAW files with JPG's and keep my 'Develop mode' edits?

    An image describing my problem:
    http://i.imgur.com/hcqMYkv.jpg
    (Lightroom 5)
'edits' = Edits made in develop mode.
'CR2' = My RAW image file format.
I have existing CR2's with edits for them saved in Lightroom.
I want to replace the CR2's with JPG's, and do nothing else. I want those JPG's to inherit the CR2's edits, but I DO NOT want the edits to be permanently applied to the image.
If I export the CR2's (which have edits) to JPG's, the edits will be permanently applied to them. I do not want this.
If I export the CR2's to JPG's without the edits, I have no way of getting the edits back and will have to redo the work if I use that photo again.
Any solutions? I've been trying for a while and have no idea how to do this.
Q: Why not keep the CR2's?
A: I am uploading these files to an online host (S3) as my primary storage method and uploading CR2's takes way too long with my internet speeds. Furthermore, online storage costs money.
Q: Why not shoot with JPGs instead of shooting raw?
A: I do my initial edits with the raw files and then archive them as JPG's to save storage space. They won't be raw anymore if I apply future edits, but I still have the option of retouching them from the 'original' state and still have my old edits preserved.

Probably the best thing for you to do is simply use lossy DNG format (e.g. export as, or convert to..): raw data is re-formatted with jpeg compression (full-rez or reduced-rez), but all raw settings apply.
If you insist on trying to have a true jpeg file with (mostly) raw settings, then:
The simplest way I can think of to do it without a script or plugin:
    * Reset the raw photo (consider preserving things that don't translate well, like profile-based lens corrections and white balance).
    * Export jpeg
    * Un-reset the image (e.g. using edit history or pre-reset snapshot).
    * Sync settings from raw to jpeg (note: omit settings that don't transfer well, or that were not reset..).
    * Optionally: Delete raw
To automate/streamline would require a script or plugin.

  • View edited RAW files

I have imported all my NEF raw files into the iPhoto and I use Nikon Capture NX2 as my external RAW file editor. After I edited a photo by NX2 and saved, iPhoto still showing the original un-edited image. It didn't show the edited version. I try to edit the same file again but my NX2 could show my edited image. It seems that iPhoto could only show the original image of my RAW. Is there any way to fix it??
How about iPhoto '11? It could only show the original image of the RAW only also?

Thanks Terence for your quick respond.
Yes, I can. In Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo, I directly select my NX2 application file. When I double click on iPhoto, it will load my NX2 for editing.
But after I saved the image in NX2, Iphoto just couldn't view my edit made in NX2.
I try to edit my NEF RAW file by NX2 before importing into the iPhoto but it still displaying the un-edited image. However, in my Finder, I could see the edited image. I believe my iPhoto '09 is unable to see my edits made in NX2. I wonder whether iPhoto '11 has solved this problem. Anyone know it?

  • Is there a way to edit raw files from the Canon 5DMkIII in Lightroom 2?

I rented a Canon 5DMkIII this past weekend and shot in RAW. I'm running Lightroom 2.7 on my laptop because I have a pre-Intel dual-G5 tower at home and can't run LR3 or LR4 on a pre-Intel chip machine and I tend to share my libraries across my laptop to my tower and back (so I need to be able to open the LR files on both machines, which is why I'm still using LR2 ... I know, I know, I need to upgrade but that's going to be a hefty investment!)... In the meantime, I'm wondering if there's a way to view/edit the raw files in Lightroom? They won't even import (I get the message upon import attempt: "Some import operations were not performed. (97)")... I know the information is there, though, because I used PhotoMechanic to do the initial sort of my images that I wanted to keep/edit. I see there's ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) 6.7 (I think it is) that supports the 5DMkIII, but I'd prefer to edit across the board in Lightroom, it's so much faster. Is there something I can download to still edit my raw files in LR2? Or, do I have to buy the update and get LR4 if I want to edit my 5DMkIII RAW files? Thanks in advance for your help!!

Support for the canon 5d Mk111 was introduced in LR 4, ACR 6.7 so you will have to use the Adobe DNG Converter 6.7 or later to convert the raw files to dng format before you can import and work with the files in LR 2. The converter is a free download from Adobe and is available at this link.
