Saving America as it struggles to retain legacy, electronic, documentation

It seems like Adobe is well suited to contact many, most USA cities, even States, to help them make copies that cannot be corrupted by international influences, for example, if a Bend, Oregon wastewater map gets altered, Adobe checks in every so often, Oh! Hey! Someone altered this document, Mr. Mayor!  This map has a change here, this date, City Manager!
The idea is to recognize a profound, accelerating, decay of electronic document storage, and the inevitable manipulations ongoing have a cure or a product Adobe can vend- house own version of countless City, State, documents in locked PDF format, that nobody can get to. Nobody.
Again, a product where honorable federal monies would be granted to alleviate ongoing internet, cyber, urgent, issues.

  • PO conversion during cutover (retaining legacy no.)

    Hello !
    We are planning on manually entering all open POs into SAP at the time of cutover.
    One idea that has been floated is to create a special number range that matches the legacy PO numbers... and ensure that the legacy PO number is retained in SAP for POs that are brought over. This would help with communication/receiving etc.
    Does anyone see any problems we could encounter with this approach? Is this a common PO cutover strategy?
    It seems like a good idea to us, but I am not sure if there is anything we need to be concerned about.
    Any insights appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Anisha.

    Hi,
    I agree with the approach, i have also use similar one in a project,,
    create a new doc type for legacy POs (ensuring that legacy PO no. range doesn't conflicts with normal POs),  it works well as it is easy to by pass PO release strategy also..
    one extra precaution is to unassign the number range to this doc type once all cutover activity is signed off to avoid accedental usage of this doc type (becuase one can use this to avoid release strategy)

  • BUG:  Saved Brightness/Contrast Actions Steps Interpreting "Use Legacy" Differently

    Photoshop CS6 is interpreting saved Brightness/Contrast action steps differently than CS5.
    The following two screen grabs were captured after double-clicking the exact same saved step in a saved action that removes banding noise.
    Note that Photoshop CS5 has interpreted the step as having the [ ] Use Legacy value selected, while CS6 has not.
    This could be at the root of why some folks are reporting actions compatibility issues.

    Allowing this failure to remain in the release is going to mean I'm going to have customer issues with my commercial actions, many of which I have not had to change for 6 major version releases now.
    It needs to be addressed!
    Other folks are getting acknowledgement and feedback from Adobe personnel, ''I have logged a bug'', etc. Could I please ask for the same courtesy?
    I can supply you with an action you can use to test with if you'd like.  Matter of fact, here's one.  Run it on Photoshop CS5 and CS6 to see a major difference in results.

  • Edited RAW files not saved as .JPEG files

    Before I updated to iPhoto8, when I edited my RAW files they were saved to JPEG files automatically. From the Help documentation, I believe that this should still be happening..... but it isn't.
    Do I have a setting wrong? Anyone know?
    Thanks.

    Check the entry "About nondestructive editing" in iPhoto Help. With iPhoto '08 you will not see the "save" progress bar unless the photo was previously edited in iPhoto 6. Here is a portion of the text:
    Nondestructive editing allows you to try different adjustments and effects at will⎯there’s no danger that successive edits and saves will degrade your photo’s quality. You’re never more than one version away from your original photo. Instead of saving a new version over the previous one every time you edit a photo, iPhoto ’08 simply remembers all your changes as an edit list.
    When you reopen your edited photo to view or do more work, iPhoto then reapplies those edits to the original version. You’ll see where you left off, so you can make incremental changes from there.
    IMPORTANT: For photos imported to earlier versions of iPhoto and never edited, nondestructive editing will apply in iPhoto ’08.
    However, for photos imported to earlier versions and edited either in iPhoto or in a separate application such as Photoshop, nondestructive editing does not apply.

  • FW CS6 internal error while trying to open or import CS5.5 psd file

    Just installed CS6 and I'm trying to open a psd file, I see the preview of the file but cannot open or import it, I get the error message.
    Anyone can help me? thanks!

    Have you tried saving the psd file in Photoshop with legacy support (Maximize Compatibility)?
    If you received this psd file from an external source, it may be a Photoshop CC file. It may not be compatible with Fireworks at all. Or perhaps the psd file is corrupt - try opening it in Photoshop, and resave.
    Unfortunately Fireworks' development was stopped last year by Adobe, and it is dead in the water by now. I would not expect a lot of support on their side anymore.

  • CS4 Crashes when importing models

    I've made a 3D scene in 3DS Max and I'm trying to import a model to a 3D layer, however when I do this Photoshop crashes everytime.
    I must close it and reopen it and try again, each time failed.
    All my graphics drivers are up to date.

    Any suggestions please guys?

    What do the models contain? Are they properly converted to polygons before saving? Do you use any extended options when saving to the 3DS format to retain specific info from MAX? Quite possible that you are using a non-standard shader somewhere or have added a comment to an item that will end up as an "opaque" chunk in the exported file and crashes PS.

  • PDF file graphics are poor - AI to Word to Acrobat

    I've been learning to use AI to build the simple, mostly vector, grapics I want available to Word and other end points like web.  Sizing and then exporting AI files to PNG and then using those directly in web apps works fine.
    The story isn't so good for grapics put into Word.
    After trying a number of options, taking the graphic to a TIFF worked best for viewing in Word.  But when converted to a PDF the images (lines, text) errodes noticably.  I'm assuming that's because I'm having Acrobat convert a raster image.  I'm also assuming that manipulating the image (e.g. line width, font size, etc.) will not improve things although, if I'm wrong, I'd like to hear back.
    I decided that getting the vector objects into EMF files would help but that actually produced poor results when viewed in Word.
    It may be the method I'm using so if there's some wisdom about AI to Word to Acrobat I'd appreciate hearing it.
    Thanks
    Tom

    I do not use WORD, but another word processor that allows me to see the format of the graphics as bitmaps or metafiles. The imported vector files are metafiles (this is a form of vector file used in Windows. Imported bitmap files are kept as bitmap files. There are some conversions that depend primarily on the compatibility of the graphic vector form and the windows metafile format. The results are generally excellent for me. What you could do is import in general formats like eps (include a bitmap if you want to see it in word and print to PDF to see the actual vector form), an emf file saved from AI (it should be retained as a vector form), and a bitmap, then also include clipboard versions of the same files from the original vector and bitmap files. You can judge for yourself. I am still interested in the comment from the other individual about not using the clipboard and why.
    EPS is a vector graphic format developed by Adobe (as I recall, would have to look at my graphic book to be sure) along with PS files. It allows a bitmap preview file to be included -- what you see on screen in WORD. EMF files should be able to be loaded from the insert pictures menu in WORD (it is there in my WORD 2007 along with EPS and WMF files -- I do not there are any other formats that support vectors there). WMF is the old Windows MetaFile format and EMF is the Enhanced Windows MetaFile format. Actually, EMF and WMF files can include both vector and bitmap formats, similar in a sense to what Adobe can do I guess with PDF. The standard EMF is what is actually used in the clipboard. You can get more info at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Metafile. A similar discussion of EPS file is at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Encapsulated_PostScript. The main difference between the EMF and clipboard in WORD is that they are scaled differently when inserted. One problem with vector graphics in WORD 2007 and 2010 is that fonts of the text are not embedded. So someone without the fonts and looking at the WORD file would not see the proper text -- this is a MS issue introduced with their XML form of a DOC file. It is even messed up in their DOC compatibility format.
    The AI file format is supposed to actually be a variation on the EPS file format from what I have read -- Apparently EPS is an outgrowth of AI?
    In any case, the WORD file may not show the EPS file correctly. It appears that WORD 2007 does an attempt at displaying the result, but with errors (I have been looking at some line drawings and the WORD display shows line breaks. I printed the various forms of graphics in WORD to a PDF and the results for the EPS was not good. I think this may be a MS issue, but am not sure. Actually, the WORD converter to PDF even messed it up. That would suggest that at this point, EPS is not a good choice because of the way WORD handles things.
    Don't know that my long winded description helps or not.
    The EMF file can be inserted with the Insert>Picture menu. If you use the special paste, you can insert either WMF or WMF versions from the clipboard. Generally the results are the same. From my short experiment with EPS and WORD 2007, it looks like the result is a problem. However, that could have been the EPS save of my application, don't know. The best way to see what works for you is to do what I just did and that is create a vector graphic and save it as EMF and EPS. Then clipboard it into work and insert both the EMF and EPS in the picture menu. See what the result looks like and then also print to PDF and see what you get. Then draw your own conclusions rather than depending on someone like me who is just indicating results I have gotten.
    Good luck.

  • Custom LegacyData Storage: Database Custom Objects Naming for 12i and 10G..

    We are planning a migration from VMS system to release 12.0.0.1, Oracle 10g database.
    We need to retain legacy data in the same database as the oracle apps. We are achieving the same by defining custom
    schema to hold the data back up from legacy. This will be a typical sqlldr load, data volume expected is around 460 GB.
    My questions:
    1. To avoid patch applied in future overwrite the custom legacy tables, will it be safe to have
    the schema prefixed as “XX”.
    2. Will other custom database objects like tables, packages, views etc within the custom schema; have to be defined with
    “XX” as a prefix to their names?
    3. Is it safe to have a non-apps related data (legacy constraintless data in the same database) in a schema and database
    objects without prefixed as “XX” ?
    Thanks a lot in advance...!! :)

    Not able to use # in custom sql is a known bug that wil be fixed in 11. The only workaround I can come up with is not using parameters and prepare the query "by hand" before using it:
        ValueReadQuery query = new ValueReadQuery("SELECT F_NAME# FROM EMPLOYEE WHERE EMP_ID = 1");
        query.checkPrepare(session, null);
        Object result = session.executeQuery(query);TopLink requires pk to keep object identity. Map in MW the field(s) that uniquely identify the row as pk. Pk may consist of more than one field, the only limitation is that all the pk fields can't be set to null.

  • Archiving Information from "old" SAP systems and switch off the server

    Good day
    I hope someone can offer some advice. Our company has a few sites across the globe. Three of the sites in South Africa ( where I'm working at the moment ) had their own SAP systems. Three odd years ago, we implementeted a new SAP system, combining the separate SAP systems into the new one, running of the same box etc etc. The "old" SAP systems were still availbale after the new one went live, in the event that people want to look back at history.
    We are you busy with a project where we are going to merge our current SAP implementation into our global SAP system... obviously only the current master data are going to be transfered to the new system. It's an idea time for us to clean up our data.
    My question: Once we go live on our global SAP system, we want to "export" or archive from the 3 "old" SAP systems the Master Data from the HR module ( like employees who's left the company - it's law to keep the records for 5 years at least once a employee has left) , HSEC and FI modules into a single datastore... this way we don't have to keep the three servers running in the event that history is required. The servers wil be kept off-line and only switched back on if a detailed audit is required.
    The global SAP system does not have an archive solution implemented to we can't access archived data from the new system...
    So, we need to export master data from our 3 old SAP boxes into a Unicode type file system, and our local South African sites needs to be able to access the information using a text type editor or a web based interface we can run off our SAP Portal...
    Thank you

    Hello Cornelius,
    To introduce myself, I am an active SDN/BPX member as well as an ASUG Archiving and Information Lifecycle Management Volunteer.
    Decommissioning Legacy Systems (SAP and non-SAP systems) is quite the topic these days with divestitures becoming such a common occurrence.
    Some things to think about in this situation are:
    Identifying the data to be decommissioned:
    what information would be needed for an audit
    what information would be needed for a lawsuit situation
    Identifying the access requirements to this data.
    Identifying the retention policies for this data (this will be
    driven by regulatory requirements, etc.).
    If this has not already been done - define retention periods for this data - it will most likely have different retention periods based on the type of data.
    You mention that you do not have an archive solution in place yet.
    I would recommend that you may want to research that option because typical requirements for retaining legacy data is that it is stored in such a manner so that it is protected from any type of modification.
    There are a lot of 3rd party archiving/storage solutions that provide this type of secure storage.
    You are correct in that you will want to export or archive the legacy data as opposed to loading the data into your current system.  It would probably involve a large increase in the size of your SAP database and you would probably run into number range overlaps.
    But, if this data is exported to a filesystem, you will be losing the business logic associated with the data, and the information is no longer in its original format (this could have legal ramifications).
    I would recommend using SAP Archiving functionality for this effort.  If you are looking for outside resources, there are many vendors out there that have a lot of experience with these types of projects.
    Two that come to mind are Dolphin IT and OpenText.
    Or, depending on the timeline of your project, SAP is coming out with a tool that can be used for decommissioning SAP Systems.  It is part of
    their SAP ILM solution.  It will be called Retention Warehouse.  Here is a paragraph from their latest white paper describing this new tool:
    With the retention warehouse, SAP now offers a
    standardized method for system decommissioning in
    answer to these pressing issues. It allows you to reuse the archived data outside the original system in a central
    retention warehouse.
    For more detail on this topic, the white paper can be found on the SAP ILM Website:
    service.sap.com/ilm
    This tool is part of a larger initiative from SAP to help customers with their ILM (Information Lifecycle Management) strategy.  This tool is near and dear to me as I was fortunate enough to be part of an
    ASUG Influence Council that helped with some of the requirements for this solution.
    I hope this information is useful.
    Good luck and Best Regards,
    Karin Tillotson

  • Location IPTC field LR- PS survives file info edit...?

    Hello all.
    I like to put exact location information and notes into a file (within LR2) using the "location" field.
    When I export these images I do not want this field to be included inthe jpeg's meta data.
    I generally run a watermarking droplet/action after the LR export so can set that to remove the data via the File Info dialog in PS CS4.
    However, it removes it fine and upon reopening the finished file in PS, the file info dialog shows that that the location field (in IPTC) is empty. All good.... Opening the image in photomechanic shows the field is still populated. Also looking at the jpeg in a text editor shows the info is indeed there.
    The procedure above works fine for the "City", "State", and "Country" fields, it is just "location" that survives.
    I have tried it all manually (rather than as part of an action) as well and the problem persists.
    Any help appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Richard

    Just made some investigations with ExifTool. Files saved as jpegs from photoshop somehow retain their location in IPTC, but no XMP (so it's the other way around my original assumption):
    C:\>exiftool -iptc:sub-location "C:\20080715_1569.jpg"
    Sub-location                    : Delfin Market
    C:\>exiftool -xmp:location "C:\20080715_1569.jpg"
    ... nothing here ...
    This happens on both JPEGs exported from Lightroom and original JPEGs that simply had their xmp metadata saved in Lightroom.
    And by the way, if the JPEG is then saved in Photoshop via Save For Web, both IPTC and XMP get blank. So, if you modify your droplet to save for web (with All Metadata included), that could solve your problem.
    Everything points to a bug in Photoshop.

  • Poor quality text on path after updating to CS6

    I have an Illustrator document I created some time back, probably in CS4 (but could have been CS2). It shows a road map and has lots of road names that follow the path of the associated road. When I open this doc in Illustrator CS6 I am told that the legacy text must be updated before it can be edited.
    If I open the file without updating the text then everything looks fine but if I choose to accept the offer to update all the text then my road names appear with irregular character spacing that looks very ugly.
    Can anyone please explain how I can update the text to CS6 without messing up the appearance?
    David

    None of the paths in this case appear particularly challenging. The text is simply following relatively gentle curves in the road, so it is disappointing that CS6 does a poorer job than previous versions of Illustrator.
    The problem affects one particular road name on my map more than any other. My original document had a tracking value of zero for all characters in this name and looks perfect. I can only get close to this in the updated CS6 document by applying very high tracking values (well over 200) to selected characters.
    Thanks for taking the time to respond. If you as an MVP are struggling to find any relevant documentation then I don't feel so bad about failing to find it myself!

  • Dashcode - webform - back

    I am writing a mulit-level list where I have 3 different lists I want to Traverse. After playing around with Stack-Layout for a while I realized that to navigate the 12 layers of the 3 different lists I would need to create 12 views.
    So I abandonded this and put a side-to-side list inside a browser inside a custom container and wrote a little bit of code to change the URL as I navigate down.
    Brilliant. Worked Great. But when I navigate backup using the back button it does not refresh the data. I figured I needed to write an event to attach to the back button and that fires but the data does not refresh and on the home button it is blank.
    Written in Pseudo Code here is what I wrote
    function backButtonFired()
    var browser = getbrowser // remember is pseudo code
    var list = getlist
    var dataset = getdataset
    var parent = dataset.objects["parentid"] // still pseudo code not exact syntax
    dataset.setparameter(parameter.idparent, parent)
    list.refreshData.
    Anyway it all runs but the data does not refresh. Any ideas helps or hints would be greatly appreciated.
    Devon

    I've been struggling with this same problem for hours and after loads of fruitless searching and messing around, I've finally solved it.
    Finally found a solution when I realised that all the javascript code for the dashcode parts is stored here:
    /Developer/Applications/Dashcode.app/Contents/Frameworks/CYKit.framework/Resourc es/Parts
    I had a look at browser.js and at the top it lists the public methods/properties and 2 minutes later I had this working.  Bit frustrating as this is not complicated and just a tiny bit of documentation on dashcode parts would have saved me a lot of time.
    Anyway, the browser.goForward() method can take a third parameter called backHandler which is a callback function called when back is clicked, so all you need to do is pass your backButtonFired function and you should be good to go, e.g.
      browser.goForward('newviewid', 'New Title', function(){
        alert('Back Clicked!');
        list.reloadData()
        //etc
    Hope this is in time to be some help to you still and to anyone else struggling with the lack of documentation for dashcode parts would recommend taking a look in the above folder!

    I have saved a pdf fillable document which works great until I put it online. Once it is online, I can type into the fillable sections, but I cannot save it. There are no options at the top to save or save as. How can I fix this?

    Thank you for your help. When I filled in the information and saved it, the information was not retained. So, I just filled in the information on the editable pdf, clicked on the print icon which asked me to save it. It saved all the edited information. Then was able to send it out. I am not sure why "save" did not work and "print" did. I am using Explorer and Google. I am using adobe acrobat reader to view the file.
