Saving an edited from FCE 4 with chapters

Hello all
I have finished a wedding video edited in Final Cut Express 4. It is 1h and 30mins long. The groom wants it as some kind of file that he can store on his computer. I have added 19 chapter markers also because he wants to make a DVD with it at a later date. I have iMovie but I assume he has a better version of this which is more versatile. Will any apple DVD software recognize the chapter markers?
Its vital that video quality is excellent. What steps do I  need to take to do this? He will watch it on his plasma TV and his computer. At the moment my timeline and properties are (two top pics):

Is there anything I should change here before the export? And reasons why so I know for next time?
Thanks in advance
Kevin

Most if not all plasma, LCD and LED TVs are both interlaced and progressive.  The panel itself is progressive, but that's not the end of the story because it is the video circuitry and embedded programming in the TV that manages interlaced vs. progressive video (as well as a lot of other complex electronic/video processing).  Some TVs are better than others.
Your source video (DV-PAL) is interlaced.  DVDs are also interlaced except in the (rare) exception.  If you are going to show this on a TV - even a plasma TV - fooling around with deinterlacing and/or field dominance will be a quick way to turn smooth interlaced video into jerky progressive video.
The bigger issue with showing this standard def DV-PAL video on a large screen TV is that no matter what you do, the process of the TV itself scaling up your standard-def video to fill the screen will soften the image and perhaps even show some artifacts.  This is due to the scaling up (enlargement) of the video, not the interlacing.  Again, sorry to beat a dead horse, but the elargement of your standard def image to show on a large screen TV is a bigger challenge than anything else.  Neither deinterlacing nor changing the field dominance will correct that problem; in fact it will only make it worse.
That said, if you plan to view the video on a computer (per se, not by playing a DVD in your computer) then you might benefit from creating a separate version that is deinterlaced  before exporting to a QuickTime Movie that you would play on your computer.  But don't use that same deinterlaced QuickTime Movie as the input to iDVD for burning DVDs.

  • 1080p export from FCE with Canon 60d

I'm shooting 1080p 30fps on my Canon 60D DLSR.  Everything imports fine and I can edit the footage without issue.  However, I have been working with video effects and noticed that the videos I'm outputting are heavily interlaced.  When I view the rendered footage in the Canvas, it looks great with no apparent interlacing.  But when I export the video, it seems to be exporting it in an interlaced format and when there is fast motion, it looks terrible.  Can someone review my settings and let me know where I'm going wrong?  In Easy Setup I don't see a 1080p option, so I've selected one of the others.
    Easy Setup:
    AVCHD-Apple Intermediate Codec 1920x1080i60
    Export Settings:
    MP4
    H.264
Data Rate: 5000kbits/sec optimized for Download
    1920 x 1080 HD Letterbox
    Frame Rate 29.97
    Key Frame every 24 frames
    192kbps audio
    Thanks!!!

    DJ,
It looks like the OP is about six months old, but I would have to ask how you are getting the clip from the 60D into FCE and what codec is. The 60D records in H.264 which is not compatible with FCE (just taking a guess as to where you should begin looking).
If you post your sequence settings and your clip properties maybe someone can get a better understanding of what the full issue is.

  • Problems loading and saving pdf files from sites with latest version.

On my utilities I wish to download and save pdf files of my e-bill.
Lately when I click on getting bill, Firefox opens new tab and stops.
with a light message in url place saying "Type a web address".
To get around this I must do a right click on the save bill and
select open in new window, then it opens a new copy of Firefox,
and two tabs, with the second one asking me to use Adobe to see
pdf file. I tell it to open and then save it and print it from the tab
that opens with the pdf file in it. This never happened before was
always able to just click on link and it would open new tab with
    pdf file there.

Thanks for the replies. I don't think I was clear enough with my question.
What I want to be able to do is to click on a PDF file in my Firefox browser and be able to save it as an Adobe PDF file, not a Preview PDF file, in any folder on my computer, rather than just the specified default location for downloads. This way I can save, for example, phone bills in the phone bills folder and bank statements in the bank statements folder without having to save them to the desktop, "Get Info" on each, and change the "Open with:" box from Preview to Adobe Reader.
Fortunately, thanks to Michael's post, I found an add-on from Firefox that allows me to do just that: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/636
Thanks for your help. Now, within my Firefox browser, I can choose whether to view or download PDF files, always in Adobe rather than Preview, and when I save them I get the option to choose the location each and every time.

  • Saved project imports to FCE with a smaller size

I am learning Livetype and I have created a nice text with a Wand type effect and a green nature background. When I save it and then import it into FCE as a clip, the clip plays ok but there are two problems:
1 - The whole clip looks much smaller than the once I created in Lifetype. The font is much smaller.
2 - The green nature background (the type of background I chose) does not import, so basically, I can see the fonts, the effects but with a black background.
Any idea what is going on. Thanks for the help
    Estela

    Hey there!!!!
I'm not sure about the size problem (trying viewing your project in full screen in FCE and see if that helps). But, I have had the background issue myself and its an easy fix...
    1. Open live type project.
    2. Drag background layer above the dividing line (a thick bar with three little dots on it)
    This should fix your problem.

  • Import/export codecs/settings for FCE with HMC40 footage?(lengthy post)

    Hi all,
I am pretty new to video editing in FCE, and brand new to 'tapeless workflow' (just bought a Panasonic HMC40)
so am not sure of all the technical protocol yet.
What is AVCHD as opposed to DV or HDV?
    What is meant by 'transcoded'?
For the following series of questions, my final usage will be for the web, flash video (.flv file as converted in Adobe Media Converter from the quicktime file exported from FCE, unless there is a method to export directly to a flash video file from FCE i.e. what is the FLC format?) streaming from my server and played with a flash player (.swf file)
Obviously, I would like to achieve the best quality possible while still maintaining a fast streaming time
here is an example of the above: Road Runner Akron Marathon
I see that if I go to menu-->final cut express-->easy setup I get a window with default import settings as in figure 1 below
    figure 1
Which import format is best for footage from the HMC40, shooting at 108024p? 108030p? see figure 2 below
    figure 2
Which import frame rate is best for footage from the HMC40, shooting at 108024p? 108030p? see figure 3 below
(don't understand the odd frame rate choices of 25 and 29.97)
    figure 3
The default import codec is DV-NTSC as seen in the popup menu in figure 4 below
    figure 4
which of the above import codecs would you recommend for footage from the HMC40 if I am shooting in 108024p? 108030p?
I am using the 'log and import' option for importing footage directly into projects from the SDHC card.
Does the check box option under the 'import settings' tab mean that audio/video will be compressed
with the import codec specified during 'import setup'? see figure 5 below
    figure 5
When exporting from FCE with quicktime conversion, is it best to use
the same type of codec as the import codec? see fig 6 below
    figure 6
Thanks very much for any advice. Much appreciated.
    Best,
    Dennis

Wow! A huge amount of questions, almost all of which are available using search engines. The forum isn't really designed to give you a detailed instruction on digital video or on basics of how to use the application.
AVCHD is a highly compressed MPEG-4 based HD format. DV is a standard definition format. HDV is an MPEG-2 based HD format.
FCE does not encode Flash. You need third party software.
24p is not supported in FCE.
If you're shooting HD you should select HD.
25fps is for PAL based formats. 29.97fps is for North American based video standard. 24fps is a film frame rate. Most video cameras do not shoot 24fps, but 24fps recorded at 29.97 with pulldown. If your camera shoots true 24fps, it is not supported in FCE.
What you select depends on exactly what you shot. Read the camera manual carefully for the different options of frame size. Native 24p is not supported in FCE. 30p can be ingested using a 1080i60 preset.
How you export depends of where you're trying to get to. If you're going to third party encoding software you should export to QuickTime Movie.

  • Importing a movie into iDVD from FCE

I am perplexed. In the iDVD - Movies display, there are shown half a dozen movies. The other couple of dozen movie files which do appear in Finder - Movies are not listed in iDVD. Nor will the movies in Finder-Movies drag over to iDVD. I clicked on the yellow triangle which appears in the "insert movie" box in the theme, clicked 'import' and it told me iDVD does not support that action. So how do I get a movie from Finder-Movies into iDVD? I did not have this trouble with iMovie.
This is my first completed FCE movie. And things were going so well.

To import movies into iDVD you may use the File/Import/Video... command, after selecting the theme you want to use for the DVD menu.
If a movie in the Import dialog window cannot be imported, probably it has a non standard format, and for sure it was not exported from FCE. Any movie exported from FCE with Export/Quicktime Movie (the only correct method to get a movie from FCE to iDVD) may be imported into iDVD.
So I suggest you review the procedure you used to export from FCE and try again.

  • Exporting From FCE to IDVD With Chapters How long

Exporting From FCE to IDVD With Chapters How long will the DVD hold??? if i have an hour and 40 minutes of HD footage all cut together with FCE and has been saved as a movie file, how many hours will IDVD let me burn to it?
if i run over the allowed amount will it say i need to drop quality, i am editing loads at the moment and dont want to get to the end and it come up with an error message. also will idvd include the chapter markers if i export with them?

    Sure, no problem.
    1. Go to Project > Project Info in iDVD.
    2. Make sure "DVD Type" is set to a single-layer DVD.
    3. Under "Encoding," choose "Best Performance." Is the arrow solidly in the green portion of the quality bar? If so, go ahead and burn your disc.
    4. If not, choose "High Quality." Again, go ahead and burn your disc if the arrow is solidly in the green.
    3. If the arrow still isn't in the green, select Professional Quality. If the arrow's in the green, burn your disc. If not, you'll have to delete some of the menus (scene selection, etc.) or menu content and check again. You should be able to burn up to 2 hours if you don't have a lot of other menu content.

  • HD Documentary Editing on MBP, FCE with "shaky video" and storage..

    Hey Gang:
I have 33 hours of HD (1080i) and 720p HD video.
I have a MBP 2.33 Core Duo, with 2 GB 667 Mhz ddr2 memory with 110 GB hard drive
    My question is:
I purchased a 500GB Firewire400 external to copy my video to. IS THIS ENOUGH ROOM? I'm unsure how to determine or calculate how much space my video will require.
Further: This is a documentary with a soundtrack and still images (ala Ken burns). No fancy effects, this is a small film (duh) and will be direct to DVD.
My current plan is to edit in FCE, one cavaet is I have some poor footage (cameraman was not holding the big camera steady, and this footage is critical.
    Looking for your thoughts on:
    FCE and the shakey footage
    Storage needs
Firewire 400 sufficient as I don't have room for all this video on my MBP and am planning on using an external HD for Backup as well as my video HD.
Thanks Everyone, without you guys, I'd be balled up in the fetal position sucking my thumb....
    FFF

    Let me address these:
    Storage needs
    Firewire 400 sufficient...
The minimal storage needed are (Apple art.# 301599):
    - 13 GB/hour with DV (PAL or NTSC)
    - 25 GB/hour with AIC HDV 720p30
    - 42 GB/hour with AIC HDV 1080i50
    - 49 GB/hour with AIC HDV 1080i60
You are using FCE and as far as I know (unless FCE 4 changed something) you can only capture HDV saving AIC, that uses more disk space than native HDV (roughly 3-4 times more).
So, for 33 hours 1080i footage you need at least 1.5 TeraByte disk...
You sure you want to keep all your footage online ? You might edit a couple hour at the time...

I am batch processing in PS 2014 (watermark and saving as jpeg from ps file). I get the message for some but not all 'this file needs to be saved as a copy with this option'. And then I have to save it manually. Does anyone know why this happens? • When trying to use "Edit a copy with Lightroom Adjustements" from Lightroom, Photoshop opens but no photo is displayed.

I can see from searching online that this is a regular question but I have not yet seen a solution.
I am running Lightroom 5.4 and Photoshop CC 14.2.1, both kept updated via the monthly subscription, on a 2013 MacMini running OSX 10.9.3
    Starting with jpg's:
If I try  "Edit a copy with Lightroom Adjustements" - Photoshop opens but no photo displayed in PS
If "Edit a Copy" or "Edit Original" then Photoshop displayes the file OK
If I am using Canon Raw files (.CR2) from my Canon 70D, then AS EXPECTED Lightroom starts Photoshop with the intervening dialog box about opening a copy or original but again just a blank screen and no photo displayed.
Has anybody found a solution yet?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Victoria,
I dont have 3.6. but I installed lightroom 4 and the function worked fine. But i didnt like the version 4, as it consumes a lot of resources.
I can open raw files without any problem.
And this function had been working before and suddenly this stopped working. I didnt do any setttings changes even.
Really appreciate your help on this.

  • I've been giving HD videos in MTS format and convert the for editing in FCE.  Looks good in the program, but when I export the finished film, quality had been noticeable diminished.  Is there any way to prevent FCE from lowering the output quality?

    Hello -
I've been sent HD footage in MTS format and converted it to Mp4 for editing in FCE.  It looks good in FCE but when I export the movie, the quality is noticably diminished.   Is there any way I can prevent FCE from lowering the quality on export?
    Thanks.

    >I use Foxreal video converter for Mac to convert the MTS using the Apple intermediate codec setting and the problem is that I don't get image, just audio
My thought would be to NOT use Foxreal video converter.
    Use MPEG Streamclip or Clipwrap.

  • Aspect ratio issues in iDVD with mov files exported from FCE

Please help. I believe this is an iDVD bug. I have found some relevant discussion of it on online forums - but have not found a solution that works for me. I am looking for a workaround.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1356500&tstart=31
    PROBLEM STATEMENT:
My 4:3 movies, exported from FCE in QT-with-conversion formats (any 4:3 format) - appear in iDVD with gray side-pillars (as expected for 4:3) AND with a black line (letter-boxing) at top and bottom - as would be for 16:9. It appears the aspect ratio is also distorted i.e. 16:9. (The iDVD project is set to 4:3.)
1- A 4:3 mov file exported from FCE using Quicktime Movie format (no conversion) does not have the problem, but I cannot de-interlace the video using this export mode.
    2) A 4:3 mov file exported using QT-with-conversion mode (any 4:3 format) DOES have the problem. I need to use this mode in order to get de-interlace.
(Exception: 640x480 VGA mode does not have the black lines, and it displays correctly in dvd player on my computer screen - but on the TV screen, it crops content from the top and bottom of the movie, so this is not an option.)
    3) In Finder, if you click on mov file exported QT-only (no conversion), it opens in the FCE viewer. If you click on mov file exported in any other 4:3 mode, it opens in Quicktime viewer (i.e. there is absolutely something different in the header/ID of these files.)
    4) All mov files, regardless of export mode, show correctly in Quicktime viewer - no black line, no distortion. The problem does not occur outside of iDvd.
    5) I tried passing the QT-with-conversion mov files through an Inverse-Anamorphicizer (per suggestion on forum - this apparently fixed the problem for some people) but the resulting output mov (i.e. the inverted product) still had the same problem.
I am, so far, left with this trade-off: Give up the de-interlacing, or live with the letter-boxing/ distortion. Neither is acceptable.
I am looking for a workaround:
    1) A way to export de-interlaced 4:3 mov from FCE that shows in correct ratio in iDVD
    2) A way to "convert" / re-head mov file after exported so that it displays corrrectly (inverse-anamorphicize) so that iDVD reads it correctly
    3) Can the mov be de-interlaced after the fact (so I could use QT export without conversion)?
    4) Something besides iDVD to put this together - that doesn't have this problem? (I like and want to use the iDVD menu/theme.)
    5) Other?????
I also notice that all the QT-with-conversion mov files are 1/3 to 1/2 the size of the QT-only mov file, which is valuable and preferable to me. (I don't see any quality difference in the display...)

In the Preview window > top frame > middle button
do you have correct for pixel aspect ratio checked or not?

  • HD video from still cameras for editing in FCE

Can anyone provide insight into my questions of the different hd recording formats for conversion to edit in FCE? Meaning, still cameras that shoot HD range from avi, mpeg4, h.264, motion jpeg and avchd lite. Is one of these better to use than the others? Is there significant quality loss after conversion? And are all conversion programs the same or is one better than the next? Thank you,
    Bill

All those formats are designed for delivery, meaning shoot it then watch it.
To edit in FCE all HD footqage including HDV will be converted to AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec).
Which converter works best on what is like saying how long is a piece of string. My answer is, "double the length of half of it".
The thing is until you know specifics it's pretty much guessing or user opinion.
Regards AVCHD Lite: I believe it works on the latest iMovie directly. You could confirm that in the iMovie forum from users there.
This app is free, works well and covers a lot of bases:
