Saving as a PDF-saves what's outside the workspace

I'm using Illustrator CS....that might be my first problem haha. Anyway, when I try to save a .pdf version of my file, it ALWAYS saves including whatever is OUTSIDE the workspace area....Like instead of saving, say, the 8.5x11" document that I worked in, if I have something hanging outside of that space, it saves like a 12x11" document instead.
Is there any way to get the .pdf to be ONLY what is inside the workspace? I have some things that have to be hanging out over the edges...so I can't just move it all inside the workspace.
Thanks for any help!

  • What is outside the Title Safe Area?

I am a bit confused b y the explanation (in the manual) of the Title Safe Area and Action Safe Area (p.215). The manual states that these settings indicate, "... portions of the menu that may not be viewable on most consumer monitors." Is there any way to determine that on the computer screen, or is it pot luck depending on the individual TV? Does it also depend on whether the TV is a rear projection, plasma, or LCD?
Since I am using one of my images as the background for the menu, I'd like to know how much of the image might be cropped.
    Barry

My experience is confined to PAL. Image sizes for NTSC are different. As I understand it, Title Safe and Action Safe areas do not exist in, and are irrelevant to, the widescreen (16:9) format when displayed on a 16:9 TV. This is because every pixel of a widescreen video is always shown on a widescreen TV (assuming that the DVD player has been set to 16:9, see below). Title/Action Safe areas are only necessary for displaying widescreen video on 4:3 format TVs. This is because the Powers That Be decided that widescreem video should be shown slightly enlarged on a 4:3 TV. This gives a larger and therefore clearer image compared to full Letterboxing where the full width of the widescreen image is shown but with inevitably wider black bars at top and bottom. However, this enlargement causes parts of the widescreen image at left and right to be cropped on most TVs, which is usually no great loss.
On the display settings, for movies in widescreen (16:9), I set the display options in the following places:
    1. DVD SP > Preferences > Encoding Set "Aspect Ratio" to 16:9
    2. DVD SP > Preferences > Simulator Set "Aspect" to 16:9
    3. In the Menu Inspector for each menu, Menu Tab, set "Aspect Ratio" to 16:9, and do this before setting the Menu Background image and its Overlay file (otherwise the Overlay file will not register accurately with the Menu Background image, at least that is the case with my outfit - DVD SP 3.0
    4. Set each Video Track to 16:9 To do that, activate the Graphical Tab in the window at top left of the screen, select the track, and in the now-visible Track Inspector (General Tab) I set "Mode" to "16:9 (Letterbox)" because my TV is 4:3. (It is tempting to assume that if the TV is widescreen, you would set it to "16:9", but with my setting of "16:9 (Letterbox)" the DVD also displayed correctly on two widescreen TVs available to me (ie., it filled the whole screen). I don't know what display setting the owners had on their DVD players.
    5. Finally, the DVD player needs to be set to 16:9 (if the TV is physically 16:9), or to 4:3L if the TV is 4:3 (at least, that works for me).
So there is quite a lot of setting to do to get the correct display. I am surprised that Apple did not offer a single setting in Preferences to cover all this. Perhaps DVD SP 4 or 5 does.

  • DW CC: What happened to the workspace called Design?

I am taking a webdesign course and the book we are using is for CS6. In it there is a reference to resetting the Workplace Layout to "Design". In DW CC I don't see it as a choice. I ony have two choices: Expanded or Compact.
Has the Design workspace layout deleted?
Is either Compact or Expanded a new name for it?
    Thank you for your help.

    No.
The workspaces in Dreamweaver CC have been changed. But that doesn't stop you from creating your own workspace. Just drag and drop the panels to suit your own workflow, and select New Workspace from the menu. Save the workspace with your own name.
That's the way it's always worked. The default workspaces have always been meant to be just starting points. The new ones are simpler, and include the most frequently used panels.

  • In Firefox 3.6.16, for pdf files, I have a choice between using Preview or asking whether to save; what happened to the choice between Preview or save?

I am running Firefox 3.6.16 on a Mac Air (OS X 10.6.7). When given a url ending in .pdf, it used to be that Firefox would offer a choice between running Preview on the pdf file or saving the file. Now you can set your preferences so that either you run Preview, always save, or always ask whether to save. Apparently there is no way to get it to ask you whether you want to run Preview, save the file, or cancel. Is there some way to restore the old behavior?

  • Photoshop CS3 error saving files - Could not save ... because the fileis already in use or was left

I have a problem with Adobe Photoshop CS3 that only started happening last night. Heres a description of the problem.
When I try and save a Photoshop file, I get the following error message:-
Could not save (filename). because the file is already in use or was left open
I have rebooted my computer, rebooted our server, un-installed & reinstalled Photoshop and also done a system restore, and I still have the problem. (The system restore actually caused huge problems I got the error message The licensing subsystem has failed catastrophically. You must reinstall or call customer support, except I wasnt able to reinstall or uninstall the product. The computer just would not run the installer. I had to undo the system restore.)
I can do Save For Web with no trouble and I can save files to the same location with every other Adobe product installed in the Web bundle, just not Photoshop.
We have 2 machines here with an identical set up (hardware and software) and the problem is only on one machine.
Even though Photoshop says it cant save the file, its actually saving the file in the following format:-
~psX.tmp where X is a random variable, either characters or numbers.
I have to manually open My Documents and rename the file to filename.psd so I can access it again.
Short of reformatting my computer (which Im not keen on doing because it will mean several wasted work hours and I will have to pay our IT people to come in and hook me back up to our network), how can this problem be fixed?
I have also Googled the problem and the only help I found was a suggestion to search for a psicon.dll file and rename it. This file does not appear anywhere on my system, so I'm at a loss.
I have contacted support about this issue, but thought it was also worth while to ask here at the same time.

I'm having similar problems with not being able to save files after editing them (and giving them a new file-name, obviously) in Photoshop Elements 4.0. I get an error message saying (for instance): "Could not save as (whatever I'm trying to name the file) because the file is already in use or was left open". Then I see a .tmp file (that I can't open)
I did a search and found that the file was being saved twice, once within Photoshop (where I'm working with it) and also in..
    "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\My Pictures\Temporary"
I'm assuming this is the problem, but if you have any clue as to why is this happening and what I can do about it, I'd welcome any input. I've been using PSE-4.0 for years, and this problem just started cropping up. The only (cumbersome) way around this problem has been to just make my edits (in PSE-4.0) and do a "save" under the original file name, then go into explorer and rename the file. So, in short, I cannot do what I've been doing for years, editing a picture and saving it (renamed) in the sane folder (or a different one).
I can "see" the .tmp files in PSE-4.0, but they won't open.. but they will in JASC.. odd..
    Thanks-
    Bob

  • Saving as a PDF -How do you make the PDF not bigger than the original file?

I am running Mac OS X Panther.
I understand that Mac OS X creates a "Digital Master" PDF file, which is larger than a typical PDF file because the resolution of images in the file is not scaled down. The PDF file includes each font character used in the document.
    Problem is this.
I actually want the PDF NOT to be bigger than the original document file.
    Can anyone please help?
    Thanks
    J Slater

    jslat,
It's probably most important to know exactly what you intend to do with the saved pdf file? Are you going to need to print the pdf etc.?
This Apple Knowledge Base article may help if you haven't already read it:

edit: You have posted in the 10.3 Panther OS and earlier forum and you appear to be using 10.4 (Tiger) by your computer specs below your topic which may handle pdf's somewhat differently. In your post you mention Panther so I just wanted to clarify if need be.

  • Opening PDFs in Acrobat XI Outside Chrome Browser

    Acrobat XI
From Google Chrome, I would like to open a PDF which automatically opens Acrobat outside Chrome i.e. inside Acrobat itself.
I do not want to first save the PDF and then open it.
I want Chrome to download and then open the PDF in Acrobat.
Acrobat 9 would do this. How do you do this in Acrobat XI?
    Thanks in advance.

    Windows 7 Pro 64-Bit SP1
    Chrome Version 37.0.2062.103 m
    Acrobat XI v11.0.08
    Chrome Browser & Acrobat
"To have Chrome download PDFs instead of displaying them in the browser,
shift-click Disable for the currently enabled viewer.
This leaves both viewer plug-ins disabled so the PDFs won't display in the browser."
There are two plugins shown via "chrome://plugins/".
    Adobe Reader - Version: 11.0.8.4
Adobe PDF Plug-In For Firefox and Netscape 11.0.8
Only one plugin can be enabled at a time.
If you disable one, the other automatically becomes enabled.
    This behavior is not intuitive.
If either is enabled, the PDF will appear in the Chrome browser.
To open PDFs in Acrobat XI outside the Chrome Browser, you must disable both plugins.
To disable both plugins, Shift-Click Disable the enabled plugin.
    This will disable both plugins.
Using Shift-Click Disable is not intuitive behavior.
Now when you click on a PDF on a web page, the Chrome browser will not have a plugin to handle the PDF so it will bring up a Save dialog box.
Go ahead and save the PDF somewhere like Downloads.
The Chrome browser will show at the bottom of the browser window a reference to the downloaded PDF.
In the drop-list, select "Always open this file type".
Now PDFs open in Acrobat XI outside the Chrome browser.

  • Invoke javascript function from outside the pdf

    Hello
Is there a possibility to invoke a (inside) PDF-JavaScript function from outside the PDF?
Do I need the PDF SDK? Where can I get it? Where can I find examples?

I don't know of a way to invoke a javascript function from outside the PDF. Adobe LiveCycle Forms
(Form Server) gives you the ability to extract form data from a submitted form. You should
    investigate this option.

  • How do I add a print button that would print out pdf or different version than what is on the site?

I see this example on NY Times.  If you pick any of their articles and click print or do the short cut (Command-P) ... (Control-P for windows), the layout of their article is completely customized and cleaner.  It seems like they've edited the print look to be different than what you see on the website.
I find that very cool and something I've bent dying to achieve.  My guess is that I could make a pdf to what I want the print look to be and have a print button read that instead of the website but I don't know, I need help with this.

I have but it's not what I'm looking for.  I want to edit what the printer will actually print when a reader clicks print.  So if the page has a puzzle, for example, and the reader clicks print.  The printer will print the puzzle in a different location on the page without some of the clutter that's on the site or have some message that's not originally present on the website.

  • IWeb site saves AND publishes, without the option to publish or not

I cannot make any changes, and save them, unless I want the page published on this site:
    http://web.mac.com/joneve/ThePeregrine_Muse/Whoshere.html
On another site I can save changes I make and then I'm prompted to choose publish or don't publish the page.
With the first site, where saving constitutes publishing, I can't work ahead. I can't make any changes until I'm ready to publish them. So I can't do part of a page, or update a page, and save my work to be published later.
This happens with every page on this site - it doesn't matter whether there's only text, or text and graphic or music files - any change that gets saved gets published immediately.
What could be the problem and how can I correct it?
Any suggestions will be very appreciated.
    Thanks.

What happens when you select "save" from the file menu or do < command S > ?

Just finished cleaning out /etc of all the saved and obsolete files. What's with the empty file. arch-release. Does this serve a purpose or do send it to where the sun don't shine.

it's empty because arch is not based on releases .. basically, it has no version ... this point has been rectified some time ago .. i don't know why the -release file is there, but it serves no purpose as far as i can tell

  • How can flex tell if  it's a mouseup event when the user releases the mouse button outside the flex application?

how can flex tell if it's a mouseup event when the user
releases the mouse button outside the flex application? Say for
instance mousedown was done within a 500x500 embedded flex app but
mouseup is outside or relased on the HTML background. One more
thing, when we have something draggable, Flex doesn't execute the
stopDrag() when the user releases the mouse button outside the
embedded swf or fles app. Pls. help me with this. Thanks!

I don't think the flex app can tell what happens outside the
app. But it can detect when it leaves the app, so I have found the
following line works fine inside initApp():
    this.stage.addEventListener(Event.MOUSE_LEAVE, yourFunction);
    and you have to:
    import flash.display.Stage;

  • When I save a pages document as a pdf and then try to email the document, it loads as an application octet-stream dat file instead of a pdf. What's happening?

When I save a Pages document as a pdf and then try to email the document, it loads as an application octet-stream dat file instead of a pdf and recipients can't open it. Some load correctly, but about half don't load as a pdf. What's happening?

    Hi mjmonck-
Which email provider are you using? There are different solutions possible for different providers. Yahoo is having trouble with attachments, outside of any Firefox issue. I've seen a Google user fix this by manually adding the mail URL to their ad block program- which mistakenly perceived the webmail page as an advertisement.
    Hope this helps.
