Saving as smaller PDF

I am using Adobe Technical Communication Suite ( with Framemaker)and trying to create a PDF of a book of Framemaker documents. Note that from within the Book, I am just going up to the file menu and clicking Save book as PDF (I have also just tried Save as PDF. I am able to save the book as a PDF file but, the file is larger than desired. When I save it as standard, the book is still returned as a large PDF (21.5 MB) and if I try to save it as the smallest file possible, it returns the PDF as 4.0 MB but, I lose a lot in terms of clarity of the image. Can you automatically create a PDF that is slightly larger than 4 MB but small than 21.5 MB (which is what I get when I save it as a standard). My document is only 150 pages but, I do have a lot of jpegs (60) and these are in colour.
Thanks,
Ingrid

What you're calling presets are job options files. The presets that are
available to you are the ones that come with Distiller and the ones that
you've made (if you've made any). If you haven't made any, it's time to
start Distiller, choose your favorite job options file, and start making
some changes. When you're done, save it under a new name and it should
be available to you in the Save As PDF dialog.
In general, lower resolution = smaller file and higher resolution =
bigger file, so you're going to have to find a compromise between
quality and size.
Better yet, print to a PS file and distill that, as many times as you
want, with as many different settings as you like. You can even play
around with the Distiller settings and not save them until you find the
one that works the best.

  • Can a JPEG be 'saved as' a PDF (or other file type)?

Can a JPEG file be saved as a PDF file?
Also, can it be saved in a file format that will allow the image to be inserted into, e.g., a WORD document? (Or can a JPEG itself simply be inserted into a WORD doc 'as is'?)
    Thanks.

You can reformat a .jpg to PDF.
No, it doesn't reformat it. The .jpg is simply embedded into the PDF file. As BDAqua noted, if it's a high resolution image, OS X's built in PDF creation module will knock it down to screen resolution.
For some reason, I was sent a chart (with numbers) as a jpeg file. Converting it to, and then printing it as, a PDF leaves the data in too small a font size.
What size is the .jpg before you place it into a PDF? Open it in Preview and press Command+I. What is the image size in pixels and image DPI (resolution)?
Is there any way to enlarge the text (via iPhoto, Preview, or some other Mac utility)?
72 dpi is low, screen resolution. 300 dpi is standard high, print resolution. So if the original is already a low res file, then there's little to nothing you can do to improve the text on a printed piece.

  • How to export smaller PDFs

Hello! I have bene using Freehand, but have been forced to migrate to Illustrator which I am learnign quickly. But I have been unable to figure out how to create good quality PDFs from my multi-page Illustrator CS5 files. Currently my PDFs are liek 140MB.
I am a graphic designer and am constantly designing stuff which I export/saveAS to PDF which I have to email to my clients. Good quality smaller PDFs would help. It was very easy with Freehand....

    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
when i export as pdf in Freehand, I can open in Freehand or Illustrator to edit. So editing later in Illustrator is a nice option to have.
Turning off the Maintain Illustrator Editability option does not mean you can't open the resulting PDF in AI or FreeHand or Draw, or whatever. It just means that you will be opening PDF content, which is a set of simplified objects that are more "universally understood" by drawing programs.
In other words, turning that option off results in a PDF like those you are accustomed to exporting from FreeHand.
Turning that option on actually embeds a full copy of the native Illustrator file in the PDF. That copy is ignored when the PDF is imported by anything other than Illustrator (including even Adobe apps like InDesign). As you would expect, it grossly enlarges the size of the PDF file.
For sending PDFs to your client for review, just selecting the Smallest File Size preset in the Save PDF dialog will usually result in a small enough file for draft purposes (assuming you don't have a bunch of oversampled raster images, etc. in the design.) You can customize the varioius export options to further reduce size (for example, downsample raster images to screen resolution). You can save the altered settings combination that you like as a preset for future use.
Saving Illustrator native files performs similar smoke & mirrors. By default, when you save an AI native file nowadays, it embeds a second full version of the content as PDF. Turning off the "Acrobat Compatibility" (or something like that) option when saving in native AI format similarly prevents bloating your AI native files.

  • Saving documents to pdf degrades image quality significantly

I am using AW 6.2.9 to produce a monthly newsltter that always includes a photo or two. I keep the photos I insert at a high resolution quality. However, when I save to pdf to send to my organization to print it, the quality of the photo degrades significantly and the printout of the photo in the newsletter looks terrible. I have tried everything I know of in how I am saving to pdf, but nothing seems to work.
Any ideas on what I need to do to keep the quality consistent between AW and saving to pdf?
    -Craig G

Since you are using AppleWorks, what format are the graphics before inserting them in the AppleWorks document? I'm guessing that the images are JPEGs. AppleWorks changes the resolution of all graphic formats except PICT to 72 dpi. There are a couple of things you can do improve the print quality of images. Since saving as a PDF is actually printing to a file, these suggestions apply.
    1. Turn on Fractional Character widths in Preferences > General > Topic: Text. This is a text setting, but it does improve the print quality of images.
    2. Open the image in Preview or GraphicConverter & Save As... a PICT to use in AppleWorks.
PICT is generally the best format to use for inserting or pasting into AppleWorks. I find the resulting graphic can be resized somewhat & the resulting saved AW file is much smaller than if using JPEG or TIFF.

  • Hyperlinks not saved correctly in PDF and Excel

    Hi,
I have a few reports with hyperlinks to other reports that contain multiple input parameters, which makes the links very long. ( greater than 400 characters )
When the reports are saved as excel, I am unable to invoke the child report on clicking the link as the link is not saved entirely ( can see that when i try to edit the hyperlink in excel ).  Therefore the child report opens but prompts for inputs as not all the inputs are passed
When saved as pdf, the link is not saved correctly and i cannot invoke the child report at all
Please can you suggest a solution/workaround? Alternately is it possible to disable the hyperlinks when saved as excel/pdf?
    Regards
    Sameer

    Hello,
I think this is a limitation in Excel where URL syntax has to be 255 characters or less
In order to prove that it's coming from excel and not BO, try in excel to create a false hyperlink which contains more than 255 characters.
A workaround might be to modify the cell as text and will not be recognized as a URL. So you should get it entirely.
Please let me know if it helps you

How do i stop photoshop cs4 from quitting unexpectedly when saving a photoshop pdf? i attempted to download the adobe drive 5 but the installation keeps failing. I went through the process of clicking through the how to's and the troubleshooting and came to the conclusion that I need to install the adobe drive 5 but I can not complete the installation. I may be incorrect on this so I need immediate assistance as I have poster and ad deadlines. I also tried disabling the gatekeeper and solution 3 on the troubleshooting of slow saving on photoshop.
    Any help is much appreciated!
    Thank you!

Are you attempting to save the file to a network location instead of your local hard drive? If so, this is probably why you are encountering an issue and why Adobe Drive would be the solution. As we've documented, it is a bad idea to open from or save directly to a network source: Networks, removable media | Photoshop | CS4 and later. Drive can help you get around this by setting up an Adobe supported virtual connection to the network. Thus, if installing Adobe Drive is the solution you need and your need help with installing Drive, please post to the Downloading, Installing, Setting Up forum.
If you are not saving to a network location, then Adobe Drive is not going to be the answer. Then we'll need to know more about the file you are saving.

  • Bug Report:  "View PDF After Saving" Does Not Work When Saving as Photoshop PDF

The saved PDF file is not opening in Acrobat after saving a file as a Photoshop PDF. I noticed it happening a few times in earlier beta testing, but today it happened again.
I have Adobe Acrobat Pro 10.1.2 installed on MacPro with Lion OS 10.7.3. Photoshop public beta m415.  System info can be provided if needed.
The file I was trying to save was about 8 MB. Once it failed to open after save, I tried varied PDF settings and save locations. Also tried several different files. All were saved properly as PDF files, but would not continue to open in Acrobat as previous versions have done. The files open properly when you click on the file names in saved location.

I'm happy I could help and feel a bit proud to have found a real bug. The simplest work around is just clicking on the file list once it's done...that's certainly not a problem.

  • Is there a way to automate missing fonts in thousands of small pdf's for print

    Greetings,
We are receiving thousands of small PDF's from several differnet locations with missing fonts. The controller on the printer is having to perform
font substitution on each page. This causes the printer to cycle and not run at rated speed.
I am wondering is there a way to have these files insert all the missing fonts before they reah the controller on the printer?
    Thank you so much.
    HDRDR

There are tools out in the market which should be able to embed and fix missing fonts. You might look at something like PitStop server.
If no commercial product is out there, you might talk to the developers of such tools for a customization.
    Hope this can help.

  • User can't open presentation saved as a PDF file

I sent a presentation saved as a PDF file and the user could not open it.  The error message received was that his computer needed Adobe Flash Player 16.0.  Despite installing it, he still gets the same error message.

Problem was solved by doing another installation of flash and rebooting.

  • Media file (quicktime) not playing when Pages document is saved as a pdf

I added a quicktime file (a movie trailer) to my presentation and it plays when in Pages - but when I export it to a pdf it is just a black space. 1. are these links/media files are supposed to be active when in a pdf format 2. how can I get the media file to play when it is saved as a pdf? 3. Will those who I email it to be able to play the media file when they open it up on their computer?
thanks so much in advance - I am under a tight deadline so any help would be appreciated!

Multimedia is not embedded in exported .pdf files.
You will need to relink them again in the .pdf using Adobe Acrobat Pro.

  • Saving Remittances to PDF

    Hello,
I have a machine that has recently had windows 7 installed and has SAP B1 running on it. It originally had cutepdf installed and an issue arose when going into Banking - Document Printing. When we select more than one AP Invoice to print then send it to cutepdf, it doesn't create all the files. i.e. if three AP INvoices were selected then it should save 3 files. It doesn't, it only saves the first. We had tried to download and install primopdf however the same issue occurs.
Would anyone have any suggestions or know of any compatibility issues with saving reports to PDF from SAP on a windows 7 operating system?
    Regards,
    Juan

    Hi,
Please check the settings of your  PDF converter, search for an option that states Append Document in Printing,
try to use other converter like Broadgun pdf.

  • How do I change a document that I have saved as a PDF file in Documents? I can get it to OPEN but can't do anything to it.

How do I change a document that I have saved as a PDF file in Documents........I can open it but can't do anything with it.

A PDF is really an electronic print of your document & is not intended for future editing. You should always save a copy of the original document in the program that created it & use that for edits. You can then export or print the revised document to PDF, again saving the original.

  • Pdf reader X has problems with small pdf and printer with post script driver

    Hi friends.
I have installed new Reader X and then i saw that, when i print a very small pdf with about 50 kb and i print it on a Laserjet 4000 printer the printer has problem with the amount of data that reader 10 produces.
When i install a Postscript driver for the printer my computer makes up to 3.5MB printer data from a 50kb pdf.
When i install a PCL driver for the printer my computer makes only 350kb from the same 50kb pdf file!!!!
When i install Reader 9.3 the 50kb file becomes also only 350kb on the printer with post script driver, and i can print without problems also.
my printer has 8 MB Ram and that should be enough for 3.5MB printer data.
But when i print the pdf with 1 side only, the printer created a side who is only filled with 50% of the text, then there comes out a second page with the message.....not enough memory in the printer.
i can not change the postscript driver to a pcl driver cause our ERP System can not handle printer with PCL drivers.
Can someone help me please.........are there settings in Reader X who can solve my problem ???
Thank you very much for help!

  • Cannot export InDesign document as small pdf

Need to export an InDesign multi-page document as a small pdf file for internet viewing.
Have tried in CC and CS6. Even though it's set to "Smallest File Size," the document is not compressed.
The interesting thing is that, with exactly the same document, sometimes it will be properly compressed and sometimes it won't (original document size: 31MB; Smallest File Size: 4 to 6MB). Have tried with the same document in both CC and CS6.
    Any explanations or cures?

    Dear Mylenium,
Thank you (I think) for your response. There was a similar post from early in July somewhere, and I had already followed all the suggested steps to no avail (as did the poster).
I solved the problem by deconstructing the document and extracting pages until I found the spread that was causing the difficulty. Prior to that, I had audited the space usage (in the pdf optimizer command) and found that the bulk of the megabytes were being used in shading instructions.
As a last resort, when I found the offending spread I imported the extracted pdf page into Photoshop, flattened the file thus rasterizing it, and exported it again as a Photoshop pdf.
I recombined the pages and ended up with a document that was suitable for our use.
I'm sorry I chose the wrong forum. This was the first time I'd ever posted anything. There are several Adobe applications that produce pdfs and aside from not really knowing where to go, wondered if the problem had been encountered in other applications.
I have been using InDesign in various forms since it was Aldus PageMaker. And this is not the only issue we've had with the CC software. We are discussing now whether to drop the Cloud membership when it expires and move to Quark. We are primarily print publishers with tight, tight deadlines. What we need is relatively reliable software that produces consistent results, not something that seems to be in a chronic state of BETA testing.
